[ STARING ] for sender to find receiver sitting alone staring at a wall, covered in blood, and to touch their arm.

Mar had been two years old when the older Mercenarys of her village, those old enough that they had returned to claim a piece of land and teach the children, had taken her to one of the Alchemists hut to start getting her get used to the potions. Normally a child would be four. Normally a child would be human. Over two decades later the Halforc knew the perfect combination of herbs to boost her strenght and agility in a fight, if she needed to and she also knew perfectly the downsides of such herbs: The faintness, the nausea, the way it numbed her feelings of pain until after the opponent was dead on the ground before her and it came back like a hammerstrike. The hammerstrike came after the robbers were dead on the ground and their blood dyed the grass beneath crimson. The hammerstrike after the merchants Mar was hired to protect had stopped their carts and had started to go through the robbers belongings like vultures. The hammerstrike came with birds singing unbothered in the canopy of leaves above and the quiet voices of the merchants melting with that into humming mixture of noises. The hammerstrike came after Mar had sat down by one of the carts with the last light falling through the canopy of leafs above in streaks of deep eveningred that drowned the forest and paved street in so much more crimson than the blood of the robbers.

Still she had not noticed her cracked rips that were aching so much that for a second Mar had wanted to cut her hauberk, gambeson, chiton and tunic off herself just so she did not needed to move ehr upper body. She did not do that and hauberk, gambeson and chiton lay neatly folded beside her. Still she had not noticed that her left middle-and-forefinger had been broken and had now turned stiff and swollen so that it was almost impossible to mix the painkilling tinctures she needed to apply before continueing sewing the cuts shut. She still mixed the painkilling tincture, applied it with fingers that felt like dead wood and could now take care fo the cuts. Still she had not noticed the blood running down her stomach where she had been stabbed hard enough that the knife had pressed her own hauberk through her gambeson and cut deep enough into her soft flesh beneath to draw a thin line of blood that was not that deep but dirty. She still knew that cut needed sewing- or glueing for that matter- after it had been numbed and cleaned.

By the other touch the Halforc tensed from one moment to another and one of her hands promptly grabbed for the hilt of her spear as if she was expecting an attack, as if every hand ever reaching out for her had always be needed to be answere with a weapon to protect her.

Suddenly the womans head snapped around like from a dog ready to forget barking and ready to start biting. There was a moment in which Mars eyes did not found Birvor, a moment in which she sat there with every muscle tensed ready to pounce on him and defend herself, a moment in which she last scraps of the herb on her organism screamed at her to do the only thing she was born for.

Then the moment ended, her eyes found the others face with a confused squint born from hyperopia, her breath calmed, her shoulders sank down and - gently, suprsingly gently- she carefully closed her small, freckled hand around the younger mans wrist and pulled it softly - not hard, far from hard- away from her arm: Do not touch me, she wanted to growl. Do not touch me, please, she wanted to beg. Instead Mar let go of a breath that was only midly trembling and when she took in the following breath, deeply, calming herself, she turned back to the small arsenal of healingsalves, tinctures, dried herbs and potions. There was a hollow sound when she leaned the spear back against the wall. The blank, already carefully cleaned spearhead shimmered in the light like a jewel and reflected on the glasses of the small nosepincher Mar took up again and put back on her stark freckeld nose, so she could see what she was doing.

"Am I that gruesome looking, that that young Sir has to look at me with such big worried eyes?", Sweet boy, the Halforc thought first almost gently. Then she thought that looking like this infront of him meant that he would know where to hit her in a fight to get the upper hand, now that he knew where injuries were still healing on her body. She stiffned her back promptly as if she needed to salute and just in the same moment regretted it because her rips shriekd in a sharp stitch of pain. Mar did not looked at the other, but her freckled ears were pinned back, keeping a keen awareness of what he was doing. Her hands worked without a pause- cleaning the cut over her stomach with vinegar water whichs scent rose into the air sharp like a blade, dapping resin at the injuris edges and, air pulled in to force every whimper of pain down, glueing the edges of the injury together before she grabbed for the stripes of birchbark as a germfree bandage to carefully glue over the cut: "An expierenced warrior should be smart enough to already know that someone covered in blood and injuries should not be worried over. I had survived the fight, so I will survive the aftermath. Now shush, young Sir." She nodded her head to the boundle of clean bandages laying beside her. The bandages looked in the little light pale like bare bones: "Either help me take care of this or stop starring. " [ @elkenbulwark ]

Unguentum Populeon was a popular healing salve in the Middle Ages, created in the 13th century by Nicolas de Myrepse. It was used to relieve pain, and also believed to stop malicious gossip. Recipes for the ointment contain herbs like belladonna and poppy in addition to poplar buds, which were added for their anti-microbial properties. This salve, with its baneful ingredients may have influenced ideas about the witches’ flying ointment based on its prevalence during this time period. This ointment is infused with white poplar buds and benzoin resin, giving it a sweet, warm and rich scent. Bezoin, or storax has anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. It also regenerates and heals the skin, and is an anti-fungal skin protectant. Benzoin is relaxing and anxiolytic. It heightens awareness, and protects during spirit flight. Benzoin was burned in ancient times when harvesting frankincense for protection from the poisonous flying serpents that protected the trees. Poplar also has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, it is analgesic and can be applied to soothe pain. Poplar is an axis mundi, or world tree associated with the Underworld. In folklore it is a tree of the graveyard. White poplar is said to grow along the river banks in Hades. Groves of poplar are sacred to Persephone and Hecate. It can be used to connect with chthonic forces, and even journey to the Underworld oneself. Poplar was a common ingredient in medieval flying ointment recipes. Use this ointment to descend into the roots of the world tree for ancestral wisdom, connecting with land spirits and the energy hidden within the earth. Mar is horrible farsighted. She has great problems seeing what is right infront of her and usually this images are very blurred. Accordingly she needs glasses to read letters or when she is harvesting for herbs for her potions and healingsalves. She uses nosepinchers- small glasses without temple-stems that are put on the bridge of the nose and usually pinch a little- when she has to read something or needs to eye something up closely.

The glasses are in one of her beltbags. Mar does not like to wear the glasses- for one she does not like the feeling to have something on her nose and she also thinks that she looks ridicilous when having to wear the glasses. The glasses have simple round optics with a metalframe that had been at some point bend out of shape and had to be bend back into shape, which makes it looks as if the glasses always sit skewed on her nose. Usually Mar will just take her glasses and hold them infront of her eyes like a monocle if she has to read something, so she can swiftly put them back in her beltbag. Mar needs to be very comfortable with another person to wear the glasses infront of someone else and in general she just accepts that she sees close objects very blurred, for in her line of work the glasses are usually a hinderance.

On the same matter : While farsighted Mar has still orcish eyes, so she has a almost perfect nightvision and she can see great details on even far away objects.
