So, I've heard a lot of negative press about the movie Wasih, which, hey cool. I wasn't keen on watching but it came up and why not.
Here is my issue. I was lead it wasn't good for the following reasons:
Wish Girl: Shouldn't we grant every wish ever no matter what!?
Evil Dude: Um, that's insane. Do you know how many wishes are straight up murder?
So I was kind of surprised when it ACTUALLY went much more like:
Wish Girl: So this is where you keep every wishes or every single one of our citizens over the age of 18, huh?
Evil Dude: Yeah, preeeetty much. Oh but, careful there. Haha, you see, because some of them suck so we can't risk those getting out....
Wish Girl: Getting out? You mean you won't grant them ever?
Evil Dude: GRANT them? Are you crazy? Look at this one! This loser wants to INSPIRE people with MUSIC! IMAGINE the carnage of I granted that sort of insanity!
Wish Girl: I'm sorry are none of these like, "I really want to murder my husband?" How is that the evilest example you could manage?
Evil Dude: Inspiring music? Do you WANT to live in communist China!?
Wish Girl: I don't know about this Communism or China.... but.... like.... when people give you their wishes, they're trusting you.
Evil Dude: And I'm doing my part by not just destroying them on sight.
Wish Girl: You don't understand! They're TRUSTING you, not just with their dreams but with who they ARE. When you remove their wishes, you're removing PART of who they are! People, they forget their dreams. Your dreams, your goals, a huge part of who you are! I'm not asking you to grant every wish.... I just don't think people should lose a piece of themselves, not even knowing it's gone.
Wish Girl: If you don't want to use your magic that's fine. Why not let them at least strive to bring their dreams to reality the old fashion way?
Evil Dude: Well yeah but you know.... hypothetical badness!
Wish Girl: ..... Give them back.
Evil Dude: I'm sorry, what?
Wish Girl: Just give them back. Like, okay, you don't want to make this guy a rockstar but right now he doesn't even remember he likes music! Give! It! Back!
I mean, how is that evil? It's less a "grant every dream always!" More a "let people think and dream what they want". Her initials reaction isn't a free dream for everyone!!!" It's "people should know their own goals, they shouldn't be stolen away."
Why ya'll trying to pretend the dude who is taking people's hopes/dreams/personalities and choosing which ones get to happen and which are ERASED FROM THE MIND OF THE INDIVIDUAL FOREVER is the good guy?
Is media literacy just a joke?

The Ties That Bind 15 of ???
Rei stayed stiflingly close, even as we laid down to sleep. After the day I’d had--had it really only been one day?--all I wanted was sleep. I wished I could take comfort in Rei’s protective arm over mine, but what should be a thrilling indulgence was lost to exhaustion.
Karashan arrived in the morning to inform us the modest group of serpiente soldiers were in route, and this time, I sent Rei and Erica out to guide them to the Keep. I wanted a chance to talk to Karashan about how to proceed, and I wanted a break from Rei.
I was regretting the kiss more and more. I should have expected that it would change our dynamic--and indeed, it was meant to--but I missed the support of my best friend. I need my Rei back. I didn’t know who he was an alastair. I didn’t have the extra emotional energy to figure it out right now. So I sent him away, along with the overly reactive Erica, and set out for the keep with the much more level Raymond and Emune. It wasn’t lost on me that this was the pair I’d started with, and that they’d been on duty for over twenty-four hours. And Adelina...
The serpent pair had moved a little ways apart, facing the rising sun. Adelina was turned in such a way that she could watch us from the corner of her gaze, but it was clear the white viper had relaxed over the long stretch of being Zane’s lone guard. Either she was too tired to remain on edge, or I was witnessing the beginnings of our first steps towards peace.
I was also watching, I realized, the pair of serpents dance.
What I thought had been simple stretches, much like those of my Flight, were actually the precursor to a series of steps, slow and long and languorous. Hands reached high, fingers outstretched, the dancer’s up on the balls of their feet. They swayed like the trees, moved by a subtle wind that I could not see, but they could clearly feel. There was a musicality to their motions that I swore I could almost hear, an echo of memory...
“Best not to stare too long,” Karashan said, startling me from what certainly felt like a trance. I blinked too rapidly as I turned to her.
“Don’t tell me you believe all those lies about hypnotism.”
Karashan arched an eyebrow. “From what I hear tell, the Shardae magic was alive and wild yesterday, nearly coming to a full Song between you and your mother. You think our side is the only one with magic?”
I knew we weren’t, but surely it was an active thing, not something that happened simply by admiring them in the early morning sun.
I realized my gaze had drifted back to them, and Karashan gave me a knowing nod that made me want to duck my shoulders. I reacted as I always did by standing straighter.
“I want you to tell me all you know as we walk, and hopefully Zane and Adelina will offer their side of things. I know,” I said, raising my hand to forestall her obvious statement of distrust. “If they are planning something, why would they tell us about their strengths and weaknesses. I know. Believe me, General, I’ve spent much of the past several days thinking these exact same thoughts. We must proceed in good faith. As I’ve said again and again, if I am meant to fall by Zane’s hand then so be it. I will not live as if we are enemies. Peace has to come from within our hearts.”
“Peace comes from within people’s bellies,” the older crow said, “Or their pockets. Hearts are a luxury. An important one, granted, but still a luxury. If you want the Generals to follow you, you’ll have to tempt them with things more substantial than hearts. A man who’s known only war will seek only war, unless you give him something more tempting to do.”
“I should like your advice on how to handle the generals as well,” I said, noting from the corner of my eye that Zane and Adelina were wrapping up. “Either privately or in conjunction with Zane.”
I felt a headache beginning to form at my temples. Too many days in a row of too little sleep, too many worries, and too much uncertainty. How was peace proving to be more taxing than war? Or was I simply trading in one war for another? Karashan was right that the general’s council was the real problem. People like Elanor’s aunts were already living in a practical peace with their serpiente counterparts. War out here meant disruption to the vital activities of daily life. War in the council hall meant about as much as particularly compelling duel or chess match. They had all started their lives as actual soldiers, yes. But the pawns had made it across the board and now sat comfortably with the power of queens.
I was getting tired of all these too apt metaphors.
-
“Our monarchy  isn’t quite as defanged as yours,” Adelina said, apparently oblivious to the pun. “The Cobriana’s have always led their people into battle personally--but then, well. You saw Gregory.”
The normally brash woman grew pensive, eyes scanning the trees for potential threats, but also to avoid looking at either Zane or me. Zane’s youngest brother, Gregory Cobriana, had been only fourteen when he’d died on the battlefield. I’d lost my youngest brother Xavier in same battle. Xavier had been there to sing our people into strength; his gifts had always run strongest towards shields of subtlety and hiding. While not creating true invisibility, such songs did give our soldiers a measure of unnatural stealth needed to match the natural speed and athleticism of serpiente soldiers. I had no idea what advantages the Cobriana brought to their people. Gregory had died in my arms just as slowly and awfully as any avian I’d ever sang to their final rest.
I wrapped my arms around myself, cold and miserable. I was not used to so much walking, and my heart and body were equally sore. I tried not to let my discomfort show--especially in light of Zane’s extrasensory  awareness of my emotional state--but the memory of holding Gregory’s dying body was awful, and I was already so exhausted.
Zane’s shoulder brushed mine and I startled, coming to a stop. I gave him questioning eyes; Zane was entirely too bodily aware to ever brush me on accident. His eyes were lost, wide and dark and haunted. Had he been anyone else, I might have taken his hand.
And why not? Just because he was Zane Cobriana? I’d held Gregory’s, why not his?
“You were the last person on earth to feel his heartbeat.”
That statement stopped me cold, hand almost reaching for his, but not quite.
“Yes?” I made the word a question, an invitation to speak further. I had no idea where he was going with this.
“I...”
His eyes rolled shut, closed down with pain, face falling away even though he was no longer looking at anything. Adelina came up behind him, hand resting on his shoulder, body molded to his back. It should have been unseemly, but it was so obviously a gesture of comfort I could see no impropriety in it.
Adelina looked at me from over Zane’s shoulder.
“Among our people, we process our grief by sharing it. A burden carried by many hands is no burden at all.”
Zane pressed back into Adelina, eyes still closed, but face smoothing. I felt suddenly awkward, not at their display, but at the idea that my presence could add anything to it. This was so far removed from anything I’d ever seen in my own court--
Except, didn’t I also let Rei hold me this way, in those quiet moments alone when it was all too much. The only difference was the serpents weren’t hiding it.
And that they were asking me to join them.
“Please,” Adelina said, startling me with the softness of her petition. “As he said, you were the last to feel his brother’s heart beating. If it moved you at all, share that grief with us. Let us remember him with you.”
What could I do but nod and offer them my hand?
It felt too intimate to take his in mine while Adelina was holding him. Somehow, pressing my hand over his heart felt exactly right.
His chest was smooth and solid beneath my hand, tight with the developed muscle of practice and use. I felt an obvious mound of scar there, lines and ridges as harsh as the injury that must have caused it. What I didn’t feel was the heat of another living body, the rapid staccato of a frantically beating heart. Zane’s body was cool, barely warmer than the early morning air around us. And his heartbeat was a slow and steady drum, thick and rhythm, the perfect backbeat to the dance I’d seen him doing with Adelina.
Did all serpent’s hearts beat like drums? Or was it only this heart, who had to keep steady so many could follow it?
Gregory’s body had been cool, but I had thought that the effect of his injuries, and oncoming passing. I had thought his body slowed in preparation to be stilled, but Zane’s was just as stilled, just as chilled. Marveling, and acting only out of the distraction of fascination, I touched Adelina’s hand on Zane’s shoulder. Just as cool, just as still, like the unbroken quiet of early morning.
A natural bird will sun itself in the morning, wings spread wide to soak up the sun. A natural serpent will bask at all hours, their bodies at one with the world around them, heat rising and falling with their movement and environment.
A serpiente will bask in emotions in just the same way.
I felt the moment my memory passed to them. Not a literal sharing of recollection, but the emotion of it. The pain, the hopelessness, the helplessness--and the determination to see it through to the end. My guards had urged me to leave him, to pass this one by. Not that one, my lady. Not that one. I had knelt by his side as I would any other, holding his hand and singing songs of peace and comfort. They were never empty, when I sang, though some days it was harder to hold onto their meaning than others. For the magic to work, I had to sing with my whole heart. So I sang to Gregory Cobriana and thought of my brother, and wished desperately that this would be the last. I sang Gregory Cobriana to the ground, and tried to sing the war to sleep with it.
I had not realized I had begun to sing again now. It was only when Raymond’s voice joined mine, filling out the song with the rich tenor tones that I had never gotten to hear from his cousin, my dear Vasili, that I became aware of my currently reality again at all. How easy would it have been to be lost in those memories? How easy to dwell in that dark place that waits behind our eyelids, where past and future swirl and bleed into one another, and time stands still? But Raymond’s song pulled me back, and Karashan joined too with a simple harmonizing alto. I hadn’t realized the general could sing--but of course she could. All soldiers learned to sing, if for no other reason than to recognize the Shardae songs at work.
Only Emune, Zane, and Adelina remained quiet, though I could have sworn I felt the serpiente heartbeats shift under my hand to match the cadence of our joined song.

11/11 GIF Review: Suno Chanda
REWRITING THIS FOR THE SECOND TIME. Hi Guys! Long time no see, literally forgot the password to the forum some time ago and just really didn't have a reason to post anything. But I promised a friend and here I am. And since forum gave me a hard time, decided to open a tumblr and post it here! Lets see if this works!! Creds to Mina Birdie for helping me with layout questions!
When Abhi broke Pragya's fast during Karwa-chauth:
Tumblr media
So the "OMG YES" Naina loved it. She was all about this! I have been wanting to see possessive, "she's mine" Abhi since Drunk Abhigya at Puliyah's engagment way back in 2014 when they were chotay motay bachay! You know, when he ridiculed her at every point in time? When he wanted absolutely nothing to do with her? When he had tried to minimize her rituals, including their first karwachauth and couldn't see beyond the materialistic things he thought he wanted. When he took forever in realizing theres more to her than just "Chashmish?" YEARS Later, we're seeing that same Abhi run around frantically trying to find a pot to fill water with so that he can make it in time for Pragz to see him first right after the chaand comes out so that he can break her fast and they can be bounded together religiously for saath janam.
HECK YEAH.
That really happened. HOW EPIC. The guy who didn't believe in God, the guy who thought rituals were a joke, the guy who didn't think these things could ever create an everbinding relationship is now HANGING ON DESPERATELY at all of these rituals for a chance to have any remaining bits of a relationship with Pragz. Y TO THE ES. Whether that be when he feels estatic after he accidentally fills her parting with sindoor, when he gets sad seeing Pragz buy an mangalsutra in Kings name at the jewelry shop, when he doesn't break Tanu's fast, when he doesn't put an mangalsutra on Tanu in front even as a show. He does another head bump cause Daasi had said bumping your head twice is auspicious! He's become as SANSKAARI as PRAGZ-BABY!!!
But then I realized alls not well:
Tumblr media
Here comes the catch. SO in his mind, he fully thinks without a doubt that Pragya is married to King and has been for the last seven years. And even if he thinks there are residual feelings Pragz may have for him, she seems content with King and was fasting for him. And remember, this is the girl that was with Abhi through thick and thin and never gave up on him regardless of any poor choices and decisions he made....and yet after her surviving through the revenge part of the marriage, tolerating tanu as the constant third wheel in their relationship, being kidnapped countless times just for being Abhi's wife, losing a sister in the middle of this, having to re-develop feelings in Abhi's heart when he lost his memory and she was politely "kicked out" of the house, being doubted upon her intentions during many phases in the marriage...and yet she stuck by him rock solid. And yet after everything, she was still kicked out by Abhi in less than one minute and was never searched for for seven years. Can you imagine her going through that pregnancy alone? Where did she go after leaving his house? How did she manage to find shelter? When did she find out she was pregnant? Was her delivery normal or did she deliver early out of stress?
Do you see what I mean? She's gone through A LOT of struggles because of him but when she needed him most...he wasn't there. So for him to be possessive after seven years of not being there for her and wanting to have every right for the night when he thinks King took good care of her (and Im guessing he did for Pragz and Kiara to admire him so much)...its like, do you really have any right to be possessive? Yes, sure because I'm a hardcore Abhigya shipper, yes you do. But really, does a guy who kicked out his EXTREMELY understanding wife seven years ago and married her biggest enemy get to have any rights on her seven years later? Um...you can answer that for me.
When Aliyah and King show up on screen together:
Tumblr media
Okay I get it, she's evil and he's pretty much a saint right now, why ship them and make his life miserable? But GUYS. Hear me out. At the end of the day, I think Aliyah is redeemable versus Tanu. Yes she hates Pragya, but there have been many moments in the show where you realize she cares about the Mehra family, in particular Abhi. She does get hurt when she sees them physically hurt. She has blasted Tanu in the past for dangerous tricks shes had up her sleeve. And it does kinda make me sad that seven years later, Aalu is still hung up on PURAB FOR WHO KNOWS WHAT REASON? Let him go babe, even the face has changed now (Arjit to Vin). Like come on writers, why can't we have Aalu move on when it comes to Purab and bring in a love angle for her? Because the Aalu-Purab-Disha-Bulbul triangle is static as it can be!
And here's why King would be great for her. Meet Aliyah, a girl who loves Abhi her bhai but dislikes Pragya. Meet King, a guy who admires Pragya fully but isn't a particular fan of Abhi. He's like the Raghav from Mina's fics He's the PERFECT balance for her! See, I dont want to see Aalu die at the end. I hope she does get redeemed and can be shown accepting Abhigya, because I don't want Abhi to lose another family member in the process of Abhigya uniting. Which for all of you who ship King and Pragya, I get it BUT IT AIN'T HAPPENING. And I would much rather see King as a supportive best friend 'til the end then a psychotic lover who now also hates Pragz. Because I really love the King-Pragz dosti so lets not ruin it. Lets find Aalu someone who give the wittiest replies to her sarcastic dialogues, who will not tolerate her cunning plans, who can put up with her negativity and someone who admires Pragya so that Aalu can start seeing the other edge of the sword.
Plus, Shikha and Mishal might look smoking on screen  I'm ALL FOR THIS SHIP.
What Purab has been doing this fall season:
Tumblr media
Not sure if its because Vin has been busy personally? But someones gotta give him something to do. He's becoming another wax statue in the back like Tau-ji and I'm already upset Raj became one, lets not let Purab become the third in line. Theres so much potential for him. Lets show him a different story line? Lets show how him and Disha are not getting along about something. Lets show him wanting to catch up on seven years with Pragya di. Lets show him trying to show Abhi what a TERRIBLE decision it is to keep Tanu in the house, regardless of whether he gets Pragz in the end or not. Writer-ji? Please kuch karein.
When kicking out Tanu from the house and his life is not the first option:
Tumblr media
Maaf kiya Abhi threw Pragz out. Maaf kiya he didn't try finding her for seven years. Maaf kiya he pretended he didn't love her in front of his family all these years. My problem forever and always with Abhi has been, and this is more of a writer issue, that he can never be shown single. If he doesn't have Pragz with him, in some way or another he has Tanu by him.
Now disclaimer: I have no real issues with Leena being on the show all these four years. At some point in time I realized Tanu would be part of this show til the end and I'm not saying remove her from the show. I get from Tanu's point of view, that she's a desperate soul-less creature who doesn't see that there is no chance she's ending up with Abhi. For her, she's gonna keep trying in one way or another regardless of how many times she fails. But wait..why would she stop trying when Abhi does give her a chance every single time? Not that I'm Tanu, but if I wanna keep trying for the impossible and it does become possible for short periods of time MANY TIMES, um yes I'm going to keep trying! Problem isn't with Tanu? Problem is with Abhi. He GIVES her a chance. He knows she purposely created misunderstandings between him and Pragya constantly throughout the past, he knows shes capable of hurting people in order to obtain him, he knows she's tried failing the brakes and murdering Pragz in order to get our out of her way, he knows she's evil. And yet, when Pragz was kicked out, for some reason or another, he had "NO CHOICE" but to marry Tanu. Are you even serious.
The choice is not to marry anyone. Marry a turtle but don't marry her. Marry a poster of Madhuri Dixit but don't marry her. Marry your first cousin but don't marry her. Marry your clingy Meethu but don't marry her. Marry PURAB BUT DONT MARRY HER.
Or you know. Dont marry at all. That IS AN OPTION, Abhi. Staying single is a solid option, you know. And lets say Pragz is happily married with King for the past seven years and theres no chance of getting back together with her at least in this janam.
You'll just passively live your life with Tanu because Pragz isn't available? And how are you going to win her back with a horrible wife at the side? KICK HER OUT!! THAT IS ALWAYS THE WAY TO GO!
When Pragz shows sass and attitude post-leap:
Tumblr media
I have full on been enjoying the Abhigya scenes. Every single one of them!! And while i do have some complaints with Abhi post-leap (okay many complaints), you do get to see the happiness that lights within him when she's around. In filmy terms, Abhi has everything- glam, lifestyle, respect, paisa, gaari, ghar, maal waal , ghar baar....but he doesn't have anyone who loves him for Abhishek Mehra. She's the girl in all these years that didn't give a fudge that he was Abhi the Rockstar, looked past every single flaw that he presented to her, and loved him for the child-like Abhishek Mehra thats buried within him. And for him, getting that kind of love...is rare. She wasn't in it for the money, she was in it for him. And you can see that even amongst the whole family, when she's not around, he's lonely. So I definitely feel for him and like that he's finally getting his Fuggi doses...he just need to make a few obvious decisions and then I'm sold on him.
But Pragz has been FIRE! She's not the same Pragz from seven years ago. This Pragz gives sassy replies. This Pragz shows anger and is not afraid to vocalize it. This Pragz isn't afraid to remind Abhi of the biggest mistake of throwing her out. This Pragz is no longer interested in EXPRESSING her love for him! Yes, of course, we know she's still totally latoo-fied by him. And sighhh. What can I say? The heart wants what it wants. But she's almost accepted that they're not going to end up together, for their own sakes and Kiara's sakes. And she's almost content with whatever little they have now. THIS IS DIFFERENT PRAGZ!! She's no longer running behind Abhi trying to gain his love. Its almost the other way around! She's the "girl that got away" and he's trying to win back anything he can with her! HOW FREAKING AWESOME. I love this dynamic where she's no longer running after him and its him trying to win her back.
The only complaint I have with Pragz-is not telling King who Abhi and Kiara are. Would make her life simpler. I do not advocate telling Abhi about Kiara though. Not when we all know he's capable of making the worst decisions and allows creatures like Tanu to swarm around him and create dangerous settings at all points in time. Yes, no thank you please. I would also prioritize my kid over telling the passive father just for the sakes of him knowing.
Okay lastly, can we take a minute to appreciate this:
Tumblr media
THIS GIRL IS GETTING YOUNGER AND YOUNGER BY THE DAY!!!! DREAM GIRL IN EVERY ESSENCE! I know we like to point out days when the outfits are not par excellence. But then lets also appreciate the days when Tripti has gone beyond expectations!  Everything about this is love!!! Also love how Srit's been incorporating some "raised eyebrows" and "suppressed smiles" and "biting lips" as new flirty connotations. LOVE LOVE.
Until next time, Cheers! -Naina

Note
1) do u ship michael/eleanor 2) if yes pls share ur thoughts and feelings :))
*cracks knuckles* Just remember: you asked for this, anon.
1) Yes.
I am oh so predictable and this dynamic offers everything - literally everything - that gets me going, so I got going at once. Like act 1, scene 1,
“Hello, Eleanor. I am Michael and you are dead.”
A dapper amoral non-human puppetmaster becomes emotionally compromised as a kickass mortal woman keeps foiling his ridiculously meticulous plans, and they end up bonding over the confusing struggle of self-improvement, survival, & being messy benches who love dramaaa?
Tumblr media
Honestly, they gave me no chance to even consider resisting this.
2) Oh boy. This is where we duck behind a read more bc length & GIFs
I should probably start by saying that as far as strict canon goes, for now, I only see solid evidence of the tightest, beautifulest friendship btw these two, but the potential for “more” is def there, as well, imo. I broship them on the show and ship them like mad in this nice little bubble of Could Be where I’m happy bc canon is generous w/ the fodder. That being said, the furthest I can see canon pushing this ‘ship is a bittersweet unrequited love area, sth like [ this post ] I reblogged the other day. No bitter Friendzoned™ bullshit bc Michael ain’t a gross-ass dick like that. Friendship is his most precious treasure like he kept the spoon Janet gave him and put it on display in his office. My heart almost gave out at that part. I think he felt lonely and isolated among his kind even before his solo project started going off the rails, forcing him to defect to the human side, so I’m sure he would never consider “friendship only” w/ Eleanor to be some second-rate outcome. (neither would I)
But he is only beginning to discover the various dimensions of human relationships, so his feelings are likely in flux and mixed. He might consider chaste romance friendship, too, since he has no previous experience to draw on whatsoever. I mean, feelings are v difficult to sort even w/ plenty experience as evidenced by the humans around him.
Eleanor is to Michael who/what Chidi is to her, imo. Every round of the Eleanor/Chidi dynamic is characterized by a rollercoaster of “is it platonic or is it romantic or both or neither or what the sweet fork is it?”, and I can imagine Michael going through a bit of that confusion himself as he gets more and more attached to Eleanor but w/o the pressure of “pick a label already and act on it”. A general feeling of attraction (not necessarily sexual) would be natural, esp for a being who is experiencing his first intense connection with someone who actively challenges, rewards, and punishes him in ways no other being has before and no human has ever dared before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She takes him down a few notches, no question. Chidi is the teacher but Eleanor is the one pushing and pulling Michael along their rocky, scary, insane path of self-improvement, which, just like hers, starts out as an empty nuisance deal of self-preservation (“You get help but only if you take ethics lessons”) and turns into a genuine effort to become better. She insists on him taking these lessons and makes sure he “stays in school” despite the initial difficulties. Out of his 4 humans, she is the one he consistently looks to for emotional pointers, support, and validation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The subtlest (and my most favorite) display of this is how he keeps half-turning back towards her when he pleads their case in front of Judge Gen.
Tumblr media
She is his person who has faith in him when no one else does and reaches him when no one else can or want to. She is his anchor pulling him back whenever he drifts off too far, be it as a result of a massive existential/midlife crisis or venting frustrations in his old, cruel ways like tormenting Chidi:
Tumblr media
He listens to her and tries to reciprocate even if it means breaking some fundamental rules of the afterlife or turning on his own kind or giving up his immortality or going behind the back of the All-Knowing Judge who can condemn anyone for eternal suffering with a snap of her fingers. This is the same kind of glitch Janet describes in 111 (aptly named “What’s My Motivation”): to act unpredictably and behave in ways that run counter to how you were programmed to behave. a.k.a. the “human error” a.k.a. LOVE
Tumblr media
Eleanor just instinctively gets him in every sense of the word bc they are very similar, and while at first it causes alarm, discomfort, and tension for both of them, it transforms into friendship - sth that I believe has its origins in S1 when he is supposed to be faking everything. That day spent together having all kinds of fun has left some genuine positive marks on both, imo, despite both “participating” to cover an agenda.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This bond is now the kind of stuff that would need only a tiny, unexpected spark to ignite. I don’t think it will in ~that~ way on the show since Eleanor is focused elsewhere in that department atm & maybe forever, but the groundwork is def there, so I can imagine billions of excellent fic scenarios blooming from this + as I said somewhere above, a potential canon scenario where Michael harbors unrequited feelings but keeps silent bc it would be a secret he is ethically allowed - maybe even required - to keep. Again, it is one of the lessons that come up when Janet’s “glitching” and they consider breaking up Jason and Tahani as a solution: “It’s not permissible to ruin their happiness to save ourselves. … It’s okay to keep a secret as long as that secret isn’t harming anyone, and telling them that secret might cause harm.” Michael knows Eleanor needs Chidi to stay on course towards eternal happiness, and, given the group’s track record, telling her that he has feelings could cause confusion sufficient enough to derail everything and that’s not permissible. But this is pure speculation ofc.
Despite the circular narrative and reboots, nothing gained is wasted on this show, it only changes forms and feeds further development. For example, everything Michael pretends to feel and do in S1 he ends up feeling and doing for real in the first part of S2, then gradually gains a more thorough understanding of these actions and feelings in the second half via Chidi’s lessons and by watching/helping others deal with their problems. He fakes it till he makes it. He essentially mirrors Janet, the other non-human member of this group dynamic, who unexpectedly bonds with Jason and her behavior becomes erratic as a result and calms only when she understands what is going on and how to deal with it. Michael’s “demon programming” starts glitching, too, and Eleanor is right smack in the middle of that mess.
Janet “orbits” the “Jason-Tahani unit” w/ a link to Jason, Michael the Eleanor-Chidi one w/ a link to Eleanor, which forms the two interconnected triangles of the show - an “arrangement” further reinforced by the image of Janet and Michael glued to Jason’s and Eleanor’s monitoring thingy respectively at the end of S2.
Tumblr media
He is the (recovering) devil on Eleanor’s shoulder sitting opposite to Chidi (also they are the only two guys who wear glasses in the afterlife??), but no matter how well they click and how much fun they have together, it’s Chidi whose presence needs to be tangible (800+ reboots proved that), not his, no matter how/what he feels or what he wants. Removing himself from the equation, sacrificing his own wants & needs, is the only way to ensure Eleanor & Co. have a shot at eternal happiness, so he literally pushes her away and advocates for a solution that involves them completely forgetting about him. It is the ultimate act of selfless love if you think about it, and it makes me feel A LOT.
Tumblr media
Also just look at them when she sees he did not die and he sees she (and the rest of the gang, I know, but that’s not our focus here) has not been eternally damned yet bc OFC HE COMES BACK WITH ANOTHER IDEA + 369 BACKUP PLANS + CHEAT CODES bc this is the demon who literally tried a billion ways to sneak them into heaven and was plagued with “after sad” when he failed.
Tumblr media
And then we have the scene where he just can’t help himself, breaks yet another rule, and sneaks down/up/idk to Earth to nudge his lost pal back on track and she ofc doesn’t remember him bc the Judge wiped her afterlife memories and he pretends to be her BARTENDER in STING’S DESERT ROSÉ (!!) and delights in her drunken ramblings - it is too much goodness like I’m this close to a Cheers rewatch and also just… THESE FOOLS OWN ME NOW

About Myst
Myst’s concept, at its most simple, is based on the ‘Mystery Man’ in the gray room whose entrance only appears in about 2% of game files created for Undertale. Traditionally speaking, the person you encounter in here is assumed to be Gaster, though there’s no actual confirmation of that given anywhere in game. The sprite’s filename is, after all, only ‘mysteryman’. Some canny observers have noticed that if you turn this sprite upside down, the black side of it also happens to look like a face, which is what I have based Myst’s design on.
(Just a brief disclaimer before the fandom jumps down my throat, lol, but I also personally assume that the mystery man IS Doctor Gaster. This was just a fun idea I had and ran with.)
[Character Information under the cut]
History: Dr. Myst was, once upon a time, a scientist in the Underground whose research focused on the theory of the universal wave function, and was often at odds with Dr. Gaster not just on the best way to free monsterkind, but for funding from the capital as well. Myst’s hope was that if the barrier in their own world could not be broken, perhaps they could simply go to an alternate one where the barrier had already been broken, or never cast in the first place. With options on realities being theoretically infinite, it was possible they might find a completely unoccupied world they could simply move into and make their own.
The Royal Scientist was unimpressed, but Asgore was intrigued enough to continue funding Myst’s work. Myst made progress by leaps and bounds, and when he finally finished his grand machine, he tested it. He tested it on rocks, then plants, then the various bugs and fish one could find around the Underground. He wasn’t sure exactly where these things went, but when they came back, they were always still alive, and so… it only made sense that he should be the first monster test subject.
‘The Gray Room’ was his masterpiece; built in waterfall, well away from anyone that might get hurt should something go awry, it presented only as a simple gray door from the outside. Within was a similarly simple, small, gray room that would react with glowing control displays only in his presence. It was minimalist, to say the least, but brilliant all the same. Rather than physically moving from location to location, the Gray Room phased from reality to reality; like an elevator between universes. It always appeared in the same physical location in Waterfall, though the world in which it manifested was completely different from the last.
When Myst used it for the very first time, it worked like a charm. Unfortunately, doing so had unforeseen consequences that not even he could have predicted.
It turned out that the universe did not much like people moving freely among its many realities. Or perhaps it was simply the Gray Room itself attempting to process too many variables and, in the end, deciding to reconcile them all into a single common denominator with which it could more ably contend.
Whatever the reason behind it, and however it happened, every version of Myst that existed across any and all realities were plucked from their timelines and combined into a single entity. He no longer remembers exactly what reality he originated from, and is now faced with the curious fact that he belongs both everywhere and...nowhere. Not only that, but the process erased all hint of him from every universe he’s traveled to. Granted, he was physically changed by the event, but even his name does not trigger any sort of recognition no matter where he goes.
His memories of life before first using the Gray Room seem to be primarily those of the version of him that created the thing. However, he gains the occasional flash of insight from the depths of the memories that linger beneath the surface, leftover from all those other versions of himself.  It took him some time to figure this out, though once he realized he was unable to return from whence he came, he had all the time in the world to do so.
During his initial test of the machine, he had created a recall mechanism for the Gray Room, but now there was no one to press it. In fact, there was a good chance that because every trace of him had been removed from all realities, any evidence of his creation had vanished as well. It occurred to Myst, as time went on, that even if he were able to return to his world, the Gray Room was no longer a viable option for their escape, not without potentially causing tremendous damage to reality as a whole by tearing all of monster kind from its very fabric. Thus resigned, Myst travels from world to world, exploring and hoping to find some clue that will help him further refine his machine and allow him to transport people across realities without suffering the same fate as him.
Personality: Despite the many trials and tribulations Myst has been through since initially leaving his world, he remains a kind monster with a good sense of humor and impeccable manners. One thing he has learned is that a little patience, forethought, and flattery will get a person just about anywhere, no matter what reality they happen to find themselves in.
This does not, of course, mean his patience is infinite. When it does run out, he tends to snap pretty catastrophically and launch headfirst into a tirade of the sort to raze entire villages. It is only then, or when he is taken truly off guard by something well out of the realm of normal that he’ll actually start to swear. Otherwise, he’s far more likely to get creative with his insults when he feels a need to employ them.
Myst possesses a voracious hunger for new knowledge and is always a keen student to the willing master, no matter the subject. The sciences come easy to him, though he has resolutely pursued the arts as well out of a sheer pigheaded desire to be adept at those too. History is troublesome, however, considering how frequently he travels between universes, so he generally doesn’t bother beyond a general study of how small actions can lead to tremendous consequences on the geopolitical stage.
Diplomatic almost to a fault, unless you are close to him, it can sometimes be difficult to get an honest opinion out of Myst. He considers himself an observer, there to learn, so he’s generally unwilling to speak up overmuch or reveal his own thoughts on a matter. That said, in times of crisis, he can be prone to taking control of a situation without necessarily asking himself if he should. Myst always means well in these situations, believing he is doing what needs to be done for the good of all, but many often see it as being offensively high-handed for one who professes themselves to be an outsider. The habit likely stems from the fact that he is constantly on his own, and has long since become accustomed to solving his problems on the fly with no one else to lean on for assistance.
Trivia:
Myst’s magic is extremely powerful thanks to the fact that he’s essentially many souls combined into one, but it is completely unpredictable. Because different versions of him used different kinds of magic, they all try to come out at once, and he never knows what he’s going to get next. He could try to burn an enemy with fire and wind up healing them instead. As such, he uses it only in life or death situations where he has literally no other options.
Gravity’s grip on him seems to be erratic, though the why of this remains an unknown. If Myst becomes too distracted, he will start to float, or find himself walking up surfaces he really shouldn’t be able to. If he notices too abruptly he will fall. Years of practice, however, has allowed him to control this strange phenomenon to his advantage so long as he is in the right state of mind.
Uses duodecimal math in almost everything he does unless decimal serves better.
Has six fingers on both hands (which might be what inclined him to duodecimal math in the first place)
Statistically speaking, Myst is practically immortal. Every time he is killed, one of his souls is destroyed, as is his body. The remaining souls, however, reconstitute him over the course of about a day, which is useful, but extraordinarily painful. He also loses any memories that were linked with the soul that was destroyed.
Inventory:
Bottomless Bag - It’s not literally bottomless, but it is definitely bigger on the inside and capable of carrying a great deal of necessities and trinkets.
Leather Journal - A book that he carries everywhere with him to take notes on the new things he learns in every reality he visits. Also doubles as his personal diary. Seems to have an impossible number of pages despite looking like a normal book. He prefers using it to the many types of tech he has that could serve the same purpose since it is enchanted against damage and he doesn’t have to worry about it shorting out.
Invisibility Cloak - Not what the wizard that sold it to him called it, but Myst’s been to enough universes with Harry Potter to call a spade a spade. Only lasts for a few minutes at a time before having to recharge.
Weaponry - Because his magic is so completely unreliable, Myst has been forced to become adept in many kinds of weapon to keep himself in once piece without sticking out in whatever reality he happens to have landed.
Well that’s all I have for now! Feel free to drop an ask about or to Myst if you want to learn more about him!

Episode Reviews - Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4 (1 of 6)
Ok, I’ve been procrastinating on this for a while, so without further ado, let’s renew our look into episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation by warping into the start of the show’s fourth season, beginning with the conclusion to the ground-breaking two-part story “The Best of Both Worlds”.
Episode 1: The Best of Both Worlds (Part 2)
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
The discharge fired from the Enterprise’s deflector dish has no effect on the Borg cube; Locutus reveals that the Borg had prepared for the attack using Captain Picard's knowledge. The Borg cube continues at warp speed towards Earth, with the crippled Enterprise unable to follow. Upon reporting their failure to Admiral Hanson, Commander Riker is promoted to Captain and makes Commander Shelby his first officer. The crew learns that a fleet of starships is massing at Wolf 359 to stop the Borg. Guinan suggests to Riker that he "let go of Picard", since Picard's knowledge is being used to thwart Starfleet tactics, in order to defeat the Borg and possibly save Picard's life.
The Enterprise arrives at Wolf 359 to find that Hanson has been killed and the fleet destroyed, including the starship Riker had been offered command of in Part 1. The Enterprise then follows the cube's warp trail to an intercept point and offers to negotiate with Locutus. The request is denied, but the communication reveals Locutus's location within the cube. The Enterprise then separates into saucer and stardrive sections. Although Shelby suggested attacking with the stardrive section, Riker does the reverse and orders the saucer section to fire an antimatter spread near the cube, disrupting its sensors and allowing a shuttlecraft piloted by Lt. Commander Data and Lt. Worf to pass the Borg shields and beam aboard the Borg cube. They kidnap Locutus, although the Borg ignore this and continue to Earth.
Data and Dr Crusher create a neural link with Locutus to gain access to the Borg's collective consciousness. Data attempts to use the link to disable the Borg's weapons and defensive systems, but cannot, as they are protected by security protocols. Picard breaks free from Borg control and mutters, "sleep". Dr Crusher comments that Picard must be exhausted from this ordeal, however Data deduces that Picard is suggesting accessing the Borg regeneration subroutines, which are less protected than key systems like weapons or power. Data issues a command to the Borg to enter sleep mode, causing their weapons and shields to deactivate. A feedback loop builds in the Borg cube, which destroys the vessel. Dr Crusher and Data remove the Borg implants and augmentations from Picard.
The Enterprise is awaiting repairs at an orbital shipyard, and Riker, although offered command of his own ship, insists on remaining as first officer. Shelby is reassigned to a task force dedicated to rebuilding the fleet. Picard physically recovers, but is still psychologically disturbed by his ordeal.
Review:
While Part 1 was great for the first season-bridging two-part cliff-hanger of TNG and of wider Trek lore ever to be done, the second part comes to drop the ball a little on delivering follow-through to part 1’s set-up.  Granted, we still get some decent character performances and a good plot with what little decent action the episode could afford, but it’s ultimately failing to deliver on the level of action that is at times promised.  Anyone coming into this from watching some later Trek productions like DS9’s story lines with fighting first the Klingons and then the Cardassian-Dominion alliance will see just how much this episode falls short on the action front; indeed, it’s not until DS9’s pilot episode that we get to see the infamous Battle of Wolf 359 in any real detail, as opposed to a DS9 episode like ‘Sacrifice of Angels’ which is almost wall-to-wall starship action at times.
The solution also seems to come too quickly and is almost too convenient.  Part of this is because the first part was written without a solution ‘waiting in the wings’.  If Memory Alpha is to be believe, Michael Piller waited until he knew he would be staying on as TNG’s story editor before trying to write his way out the seemingly impossible-to-escape cliff-hanger he’d created in part 1.  Now while I can understand that desire not to tie yourself into a solution to something that might not be your problem, I think in any kind of continual story-telling, early parts should always be written to leave a few options open.  Even if you’re not writing the solution because you’re doing a form of writing like TV or film where you’re not guaranteed to write the next instalment, I think it’s just good manners to fellow writers and to your audience not to write a hard-to-solve cliff-hanger.
As it is, I can’t help feeling TNG might have benefited from extending part 2 a bit more and potentially turning this into a trilogy, much as DS9 did with its season 2 opening episodes.  Still, I suppose it ends well enough, and I’m glad this episode and later ones gave us a sense that Picard remains affected by his assimilation experience.  Not only is this ground-work that later ex-Borg characters like Voyager’s Seven of Nine would rely on simply to exist, but it’s another move by the show away from being just an unending array of one-off adventures with little to no consequences for anyone involved.  That kind of overly simplistic and unrealistic story-telling just isn’t Trek-worthy, and I’m glad it was starting to die out here.  Overall score for this episode, 8 out of 10.
Episode 2: Family
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
The Enterprise is docked at Earth Station McKinley, undergoing repairs and refitting following its battle with the Borg. The episode follows the interactions of three members of the crew with their family members. Lt. Worf's adoptive human parents, Sergey and Helena Rozhenko visit the Enterprise, having learned about his discommendation some time ago, but also having been unable to support him as they would wish due to being lightyears apart. Worf, though embarrassed and uncomfortable with their doting behaviour at first, but in the end appreciates their concern. Dr Beverly Crusher retrieves a chest, kept in storage on Earth, containing her late husband Jack's mementos, including a holographic recording he made for Wesley when their child was only 10 weeks old. Beverly, though worried that the two of them have only recently truly come to terms with Jack's death, eventually gives the recording to Wesley. Wesley runs the recording and is given some degree of closure by the message.
Captain Picard, recovering from his Borg assimilation, visits his family's vineyard in La Barre, France, which is run by his elder brother Robert along with his wife Marie and son René. Jean-Luc considers a position on Earth with an underwater research project called Atlantis. Robert has always been jealous of his brother's success and is concerned that Jean-Luc's presence will drive René to also join Starfleet. The two have a bitter argument and end up wrestling each other in a mud puddle, eventually culminating in an emotional reunion, with Jean-Luc breaking down and crying, admitting his sense of powerlessness and guilt at the things he was forced to do while under the influence of the Borg. Robert states that Jean-Luc will have to learn to live with what he did, regardless of where he goes. Jean-Luc decides to go back to the Enterprise. The two spend the night getting drunk as they resolve their differences. After Jean-Luc leaves, Robert decides to let René follow his dream to join Starfleet as René sits under a tree and looks up at space.
Review:
This episode really helps the previous one in terms of moving TNG away from being a series without consequence.  While Wesley’s storyline is little more than filler covering a bit more screen-time that the other plots could have made better use of, Worf’s part in the episode is our first real sense of follow-on from ‘Sins of the Father’.  At last, Worf’s discommendation gets its first notable repeat mention, and at the same time we get to see our first glimpse into the human family that raised Worf. Their part in this episode brings up some great little messages about good parenting, and as Guinnan points out, there are a lot of parents out there who could stand to learn something from the Rozhenkos.
However, the real sign that TNG is starting to take the idea of multi-episode story-telling seriously in this episode is Picard’s story.  ‘Best of Both Worlds’ essentially hinted that Picard remained shaken by his experiences with the Borg, but that was as far as it went.  ‘Family’ brings Picard down to Earth, literally, by having him go home and be cajoled into dealing with those experiences by the only people who could do that; his family.  Ultimately, that’s the role that Picard’s family, or more accurately his brother, has to play in this episode; to be the spur that forces Picard to drop his outer reserve and let himself feel what he needs to in order to better deal with the mental trauma.
In many ways, it’s not unlike the kind of mental cajoling and breaking through a therapist might use in helping a patient deal with mental trauma, and I think the only reason Troi doesn’t provide this is because she’s part of Picard’s crew, and there’s only so far Picard would ever go to open up around those under his command.  Ultimately, it has to be Robert that pushes his younger brother into opening up, and who points out that no matter what Picard does, the experience isn’t going to go away whether you avoid anything related to the source of that trauma or not.  It’s a great message that I imagine many people suffering with psychological traumas could identify with and take as advice themselves, which adds in what defines Trek at its best; issue exploration through metaphor. Discounting the wasted time on the Wesley plot, I’d give this episode 9 out of 10.
Episode 3: Brothers
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
A misguided prank between two young brothers exposes the younger of them to a toxic parasite that cannot be treated aboard the Enterprise, but Dr Crusher is able to stabilize his condition in a controlled environment in Sickbay while the ship sets out for a starbase that can cure the boy. As Lt. Commander Data escorts the older brother to visit his sibling, he suddenly stops and returns to the bridge where, unseen by the crew, he sets a new course for the ship and triggers a life support alarm, causing the evacuation of the bridge to be ordered. Captain Picard orders navigational control transferred the controls to Engineering while the rest of the bridge crew evacuates, but Data remains on the bridge, mimics Picard's voice and locks down control of the ship with a complex access code, preventing any interference with his actions. The crew discover Data's lock-down and manually disable the transporter's site-to-site function to prevent Data from easily moving about the ship. Once the Enterprise is in orbit about the planet Terlina III, Data creates a programmed sequence of force fields to allow him to move from the bridge to the nearest transporter room without being stopped by security, and then beams down to the planet, leaving the Enterprise still under his lock-down. Picard orders his crew to attempt to override Data's lock-down of the ship, while Dr Crusher attempts to keep the infected boy stabilized.
Data finds himself in the home of his creator, Dr Noonien Soong. Soong states that he called Data to him using a form of automatic recall and makes a manual adjustment on Data to return him to normal. As they talk, they are joined by Lore, inadvertently also drawn by the same recall that Data received, since Soong assumed that Lore was still disassembled. Lore expresses resentment towards his creator and starts to leave, but stops when Soong tells both of his creations that he is dying and wishes to give Data an "emotion chip" he has created. Soong decides to rest before implanting the chip, leaving Data and Lore to talk. When he returns, he proceeds to implant the chip but discovers too late that Lore had managed to deactivate Data and switch clothing with him, so that he now possesses the emotion chip. Soong tries to warn Lore the chip is not meant for him, but Lore instead injures Soong and transports off the planet.
The crew of the Enterprise find a way to beam down an away team to the planet, where they discover the dying Soong and the deactivated Data. After Data is reactivated, he cannot recall any of what he did on the Enterprise to arrive at this planet, until Soong reveals to him where he can find that information stored in his memory files. Data apologizes to Soong that he will not be able to grieve for his loss, but Soong tells him he will grieve in his own way. After Soong states that he wishes to die on the planet, the Enterprise leaves and returns to its course to the medical facility, where the sick boy is successfully treated. Data observes the brothers at play after forgiving each other for the accident, contemplating his own relationship with Lore.
Review:
This episode is the second in a trilogy that covers the concept of family, although this time we’re exploring it through Data being reunited with his creator, as well as fellow android Lore; in essence, the reunification of a somewhat dysfunctional father-and-sons dynamic that bears echoes of the Thor-Loki-Odin relationship of Marvel lore.  Not only is this a great little character piece for Data, but Brent Spiner actually plays all three members of this family.  It’s a remarkable enough technical feat to see one actor play two roles, such as when Lisa Kudrow would play Phoebe Buffay’s twin sister Ursula in episodes of Friends or the earlier TNG episode ‘Datalore’ where Spiner played Data and Lore.  Playing three characters in one episode, however, is all the more remarkable.
The main plot is very good, albeit lacking any real issue exploration because it is ultimately just a character piece.  We also get to see some of Data’s more advanced abilities unleashed, such as his voice emulation and higher-level computer programming abilities.  For anything close to issue exploration, it’s the guest siblings, or rather the younger one, that makes the closest thing to a salient point about anything of note. When Dr Crusher is trying to convince the kid to forgive his older brother for the prank gone wrong, the lad claims he’s never played practical jokes on anyone, even for April Fools, because he feels “it’s not funny for the person being pranked.”
As someone with autism who can’t generally separate practical jokes from bullying and sees the two of fundamentally synonymous except where the victim has behaved so poorly that a practical joke is equitable punishment, I totally agree with this kid’s assessment of practical joking.  Such pranks, outside of punishing truly horrendous people and the slapstick antics of something like Looney Toons, are little more than the cruellest, stupidest and generally most immature of all humour forms imaginable.  It’s not funny because it is essentially humour in weaponised form, laughter directed against a victim in mockery and shame, and in any truly enlightened society it simply has no place, save for an occasional punishment of necessity.  Likewise, anything that encourages practical jokes as a generally accepted form of humour like April Fools should be banned.
Hell, April Fools only started because some idiots several centuries back refused to shift from an old model of calendars to a new one.  How the hell does that justify all the stupidity of April Fools all this time later?  The answer is simple; it never has, and the only true fools are the ones who still celebrate the custom instead of opting out. Frankly, the fact that pranks and April Fools haven’t been edited out of society by the time TNG is set is a flaw in the supposedly utopian world of Trek.  If humans are still using humour as a weapon like this by the 24th century, if we haven’t grown up properly by then, how the hell have we managed to establish the kind of world that Trek claims to be.  To say I am disappointed by this facet of this episode, and Trek as a whole, is to woefully understate things.  Because of this, what might have been a top-scoring episode despite an otherwise total lack of issue-depth becomes worth 8 out of 10.
Episode 4: Suddenly Human
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
The Enterprise responds to a distress call from a Talarian vessel. They rescue five teenaged crewmembers - four Talarian, and one human, Jono.
Jono keeps to himself, but shows strict obedience to Captain Picard, which together with some unexplained past injuries leads Dr Crusher to suggest Jono may have been physically abused. It is determined that Jono is Jeremiah Rossa, a long-lost Federation citizen. His grandmother is a Starfleet admiral, and he was orphaned ten years ago when his parents were killed in a skirmish with the Talarians.
When the Captain introduces the topic of Jono's human family, Jono becomes angry. After persistent effort by Picard, Jono's memories of the attack begin to return and a friendship develops between Jono and Wesley Crusher.
A Talarian ship arrives. Its Captain, Endar, asks for a status on his son, who happens to be Jono. Ten years ago, Endar claimed Jono after Jono's parents were killed. This is part of the Talarian custom of adopting the children of slain enemies to replace their own children who have died in battle. Endar explains Jono's injuries as the products of a boy trying to impress his father by participating in high-risk activities; Picard seems satisfied and observes that Endar seems to care for Jono. Picard allows Endar to see Jono, but when Jono says he wants to stay with Endar, Picard suspects the boy is afraid to say he wants to stay in the Federation. Endar insists that Jono will come back with him, even if the result is war between the Talarians and the Federation.
Returning to his vessel, Endar calls for reinforcements, as Picard decides to try to convince Jono to stay. After Jono receives a message from his grandmother, Picard takes the boy to play a form of racquetball, where Jono breaks down and cries due to the sounds of the game triggering long-buried memories of his human parents being killed. The crew believes they are making progress with the boy, but that night, Jono stabs the Captain. The dagger is deflected by Picard's sternum, and the wound is minor. The problem of where Jono should live is now compounded as Jono has committed a crime.
When Picard learns that Jono feels he cannot betray Endar by befriending Picard, the Captain realizes he has been trying to impose his wishes on the boy. Just as Endar's patience is about to run out, Picard contacts the Talarians and lets them know he will let Jono go back. Jono bids Picard farewell with a Talarian ritual that is normally reserved for family members.
Review:
This is the third episode on the trot that covers the theme of family, and again we get a different perspective.  The apparent intention behind it was to explore something the show normally looks at using Worf, namely if you raise a child of one culture in another culture, can they ever be of their birth culture or do they inevitably revert to the culture they were raised in.  However, exploration of this is partly muddled by the fact that the episode raises issues of child abuse regarding the Talarian-raised human teenager that the episode focuses on.  Some less observant and more reactionary viewers seem to think the conclusion of the episode effectively condones child abuse, since those the Enterprise crew suspect of abusing the child get custody in the end.  However, the episode clearly shows Jono’s injuries result from the physically harsh games of the world where he grows up, and as such are simply accidental injuries rather than intentional ones.
I think if there is a message regarding child abuse and custody cases in this episode despite the intentions of the writers, it’s not to let your suspicions and the personal emotions that stem from those suspicions cloud your judgement.  While better safe than sorry is undoubtedly a wise policy for anyone to adhere to, I think that some people can be inclined to wrap their children up in cotton wool for fear that if their child gets injured even by accident, the state will use it as an excuse to label them as abusers to satisfy themselves.  Such fears are perfectly understandable, as this episode clearly shows how easy it can be even for the supposedly enlightened and more rational humanity of the 24th century to leap to the worst possible conclusions and act from those rather considering all the facts.  As soon as they see Jono is human, and once Dr Crusher finds broken bones and assumes abuse, the crew is hell-bent on winning Jono back to humanity, even when the broken bones are explained away as accidental, all because the Enterprise crew values its own assumptions over actual fact.
I also think the episode is a victim of when it was made; the later TV franchise of CSI shows the medical examiners of their various shows identifying whether certain injuries could be accidentally or deliberately inflicted, and the earliest of those shows began about a decade after this episode.  This makes me wonder if forensic medicine had yet to develop this science far enough in 1990 that a show like TNG could capitalise on it in the same way.  After all, if early 21st century MEs can determine the difference between an accidental bone fracture and one caused by an act of abuse, you’d think a 24th century doctor like Beverley Crusher could make similar determinations.  As it is, this lack of diagnostic accuracy on Crusher’s part only adds to the error committed by Picard, and it’s only at the end when Jono is driven to violence that anyone realises ‘ok, we’ve messed up and mis-read the entire situation.’
What makes the whole thing really stupid, however, is that Jono’s situation is something of a mirror to Worf’s, and yet Worf is among those seeking to insist upon Jono throwing off his adoptive culture for his birth one.  That seems very hypocritical coming from a Klingon who has gone into Star Fleet; if Worf were to live by the gospel of this episode, he’d have gone back to the Klingon empire as soon as he was old enough.  Has he done that?  No, he’s the tactical officer and chief of security for the Federation flagship, for crying out loud.  For someone from a race valuing honour so heavily, it’s just stupid and inconsistent to have Worf follow everyone else’s assumption and not argue in Jono’s corner. I won’t even start on the stupid howling ritual that had me muting the episode every time it came on.  Bottom line, this episode only gets 5 out of 10 from me.
Episode 5: Remember Me
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
The USS Enterprise docks at Starbase 133, where Dr Beverly Crusher greets her elderly friend and mentor, Dr Dalen Quaice. After taking him to his quarters, discussing the loss of old friends, Dr Crusher visits her son Ensign Wesley Crusher in Engineering. Wesley attempts to create a static warp bubble, but the experiment appears to fail. As the Enterprise leaves Starbase, Dr Crusher finds that Dr Quaice is missing, with no record of him coming aboard the ship. As she performs a medical test on transporter chief O'Brien, she realizes that her medical staff is missing; further investigation and discussion with the crew show that she has always worked alone in sick bay.
Dr Crusher continues to try to track down the disappearing people and finds more and more crew members that she remembers being completely unknown to the crew or the computer. At one point, a vortex appears near Dr Crusher and attempts to pull her in, but she is able to hold on to a fixture until it dissipates; the ship shows no record of the vortex's appearance when she investigates. Eventually, no one but Captain Picard and herself remain on the ship, but Picard believes that the situation is normal. Dr Crusher orders the computer to give Picard's vital signs over the ship's speakers so she knows he is still there, but shortly thereafter, even he disappears. Then, the vortex reappears, and once again tries to claim Beverly. She is blown across the bridge, but she manages to hang onto the chair for the Ops position until the vortex disappears.
At this point, it is revealed that the actual Enterprise, where Wesley had successfully created the warp bubble and accidentally trapped his mother within it, is trying to rescue Dr Crusher. With the warp bubble collapsing rapidly, Wesley's fears lead the Traveller to appear and help Wesley attempt to stabilize the bubble. The Traveller recommends the Enterprise return to the Starbase, where the warp bubble was formed and may be more stable.
Within the warp bubble, Dr Crusher attempts to direct the Enterprise to the home planet of the Traveller, but soon finds the ship is unable to set that destination, as it no longer exists. More of the universe she knows disappears, soon leaving only the Enterprise. She recognizes the shape as being that of Wesley's warp bubbles, and determines that she is trapped, the earlier vortex being the Enterprise crew's first attempt to save her. As the warp bubble shrinks, erasing parts of the Enterprise, she races for Engineering, the centre of the warp bubble, and finds a vortex waiting there. She jumps in at the last moment, finding herself back in Engineering along with Picard, Wesley, Geordi La Forge, and the Traveller. She embraces her son and obtains confirmation from Picard that the Enterprise's population is 1,014, including her guest Dr Quaice), which is the correct number.
Review:
Here we have another example of a cost-saving bottle episode made to save money where earlier episodes perhaps involved an over-spend.  It’s not up there with the like of ‘The Offspring’ for quality; it’s taking an item that was apparently intended for the earlier episode ‘Family’ and got for time, turning it into a stand-alone episode and then bringing back the Traveller, a guest character not seen since his only prior appearance in TNG’s first season. As a result, we get a re-hash of the ‘thoughts making reality’ premise from the Traveller’s one previous episode, albeit focused entirely around Beverley Crusher.  Gates McFadden does a wonderful job taking centre stage for this episode, but there’s only so much she can do to raise its quality; there’s simply not enough substance for her performance, and the performances of the other actors, to bring to life.  No character exploration, a recycled issue from a past episode.  The only reason I give it 6 out of 10 and not less is that we’re at least getting a break from the kind of stupid we got on the previous episode.

Cas in 13x14: Whatever it Takes
Okay, here we go. First off, let me just say how well-done that episode was. I was bouncing off the walls last night with commentary and general flailing (I’m pretty sure I drove my casual-viewer watching buddy crazy) and I couldn’t wait to organize and elaborate on the notes I took into a coherent post. Coherent is the key word here, because I’m looking back at my notes and seeing some of them are not quite as insightful and well thought out as they were at 10:30 at night (For example: “Dean but not, you know.” Huh? What does that even mean, Maeve?)
Anyways.
Familiar Themes, New Context
So, Cas x Self Worth has been an important theme for a few seasons now --- and it has been well established that much of Cas’s self-worth stems from mission and his failures and successes on this front. While we have seen an exponential amount of growth from him when it comes to this (see resolution of depression arc as well as literal and metaphorical renewal,) 13x14 re-established Cas’s yearn for mission and purpose as well as the positive and negative implications this has for his character. I would like to point to the very title of this episode: “Good Intentions.” I know this title immediately brought Cas to mind for me as well as raise some red flags, because ‘good intentions’ never end up well, especially in Cas’s case. This is not to say he made some incredibly detrimental, immoral, irreversible mistake this episode --- because he didn’t, imo --- I simply point this out because it is key to interpreting his decisions and also helps to bring other examples of Cas’s good-intentioned actions to mind.
Now I will not deny some of Cas’s behavior and attitude reminded me of an earlier, more righteous and stoic version of the angel, but I was more struck by the the stark differences between Cas then and Cas now. In almost every other instance of “Cas on a mission,” he has removed himself emotionally from the situation (to the best of his ability.) He acts out of necessity, and does so with strategy and logic, and even when his actions aren’t solely objective he manages to make them appear so. While there have always been exceptions to this rule, I was blown away at how blatantly and unapologetically 13x14 threw away the Cas rulebook --- putting Cas’s actions and words in direct conflict, and taking a soldier who is usually cool and calculating and showing him as emotional and reactive. This conflict was so evident, in fact, my casual-viewing friend asked me what was up with Cas, and I didn’t have an easy answer:  I was just as blown away as she was. Cas has been growing increasingly emotional these past few seasons, but I had not yet seen it in this context; I had gotten used to the depressed, docile Cas, and it wasn’t until this season and the re-emergence of the BAMF I remembered so well that I really grasped all at once how much Cas has morphed as a character.
And that’s not to say I haven’t noticed the exponential changes in his character over the last few seasons, because, well, they were exponential. I didn’t think he could still surprise me.
He did.
Go figure.
Conflicting Narratives
I cannot tell you how important this strategy is to telling Cas’s story --- the audience is familiar with several iterations of Castiel, so paralleling his current actions/behavior with those of an older version of Cas is perhaps the most effective way of showing character development. And holy mother of hell has he done some development. First off, I’ll explain what I found so striking about Cas this episode. We were essentially told two different stories: Cas from the Winchester’s point of view, and Cas from his own point of view. Take, for example, this exchange:
Dean: How are you holdin' up, Cas?
Castiel: I'm fine.
Dean: No, I just mean with, you know, everything you've been through. And I know you really wanna find Lucifer.
Castiel: No, it's not that. It's about --- well, it is that, but it's also I --- Dean, I was --- I was dead.
Dean: Temporarily.
Castiel: And I have to believe that I was brought back for a reason.
(Cas goes into his responsibility for Jack and preparation for war with Michael.)
Once again, Cas’s search for purpose and how it ties into his self-worth. This episode is full of examples of Cas’s eagerness to get something done which he voices most enthusiastically to Sam and Dean, and while his zeal was refreshing it did not surprise me, nor did in seem to surprise the boys. It wasn’t until the visual narrative took a sharp turn that I really zeroed in on Cas, and you may know the scene I’m referring to: when he rushed down to help Dean after he was magically choked, and we got seven solid seconds (yes, I counted) of Cas staring bloody murder at Donatello before they cut away.
Here’s where it gets interesting. When discussing what to do about Donatello Cas’s argument is presented as strictly rational, all of his points relating only to what will further them to their goal. But he’s angry, and he decides to take things into his own hands.
(After discussing Donatello)
Cas: Fine. (Cas leaves the room.)
Dean: Cas---
Sam: Hey, what are you doing?
Cas: What I have to.
As soon as Cas is away from the Winchesters, something changes. His determination stays steady, but his motive comes into question--- this is more than just taking the mission into his own hands, this is reactive and aberrant. His rhetoric shifts away from logic and strategy to one much more emotional. Something hit a nerve.
Cas: I'm sorry, but I'm not going to let you, or anyone, hurt the people I love. Not again.
(cue me, yelling at full volume into the abyss.)
Voila! Conflicting narratives! We have Cas, presenting himself as strategic and logical to the Winchesters, and we have a view of Cas behind the scenes that tells a whole different story--- somebody with a rash, all-too-human reaction to seeing someone he loves being hurt. Cas approaches protecting his family with the same ferocity he does any other mission, the difference being he is driven by human emotion, and not angelic duty, which begs the question: which rules his decision-making process? These scenes can answer that in part. While it can be argued Cas’s actions could have just been a means to an end (the end being finding out the ingredients to the spell,) this course of action was undeniably reckless, and probably unnecessarily dangerous. We know Cas was strong enough to overpower Donatello and I am certain could have found another way to get to this information, not to mention whatever he did to Donatello could have easily killed him as well. Not to say he isn’t impulsive, because he is --- but this impulse was borne out of love and anger and vengeance, a motivator much more associated with Dean. In my opinion, Cas was not intent on leaving Donatello with any capacity to function, mind-probe or not. It was seeing Dean get hurt that stirred Cas up, and it was the prospect of either Dean or Sam being hurt again that motivated him to take immediate action.
Why It’s Important
So, what does that mean for Cas? In my friend’s words, Cas is morphing. We know how far Cas can be willing to go for a cause, but much of Cas’s new cause comes irrefutably from a place of deep emotion --- while most of his missions have been rooted in protecting the Winchesters (whether or not he would admit it,) this is a somewhat new territory. We saw a few examples of reckless decisions made in devotion to the Winchesters last season, i.e. killing Billy, but the circumstance is what is important here. Cas is restored to his old, confident, smitey self, and yet it has not compromised his own humanity; in many ways, it has made it more obvious. Cas is no longer vulnerable and is still more human than ever, and that was on full display for us in “Good Intentions.”
But why is Cas putting up the front? Why is he presenting his actions to the Winchesters only in the context of logic and mission? The closing scene, in which Sam and Dean confront him about what he did to Donatello, Cas says he “did what soldiers do.” He writes off his actions as just hurrying along the process. He doesn’t address the emotional aspect of what he did, but the episode makes it clear to the viewer, much more clearly than they have done in recent memory, that there is much more going on in Cas’s mind and heart than he clued the Winchesters into.
Cas has come to terms with his love for the Winchesters (something can be said for him grappling with different emotions toward each brother, but I’m not going into that right now,) and he has much more emotional intelligence than he did last time he was at full power and consumed with mission, so I think misunderstanding of and unfamiliarity with human emotion will play much less of a role than it did in season 6.
I believe Cas is embarking on a character arc that will determine just how far he will go to protect his family.
(By family, of course, I mean Sam, Dean, Jack, and Mary.) And that has many implications. This subversion of early Cas will certainly give light to character growth as well as help resolve parts of his character (we are in the autumn of the show, after all.) It also has the potential to create problems. As we saw this week, Cas acted on impulse and subsequently put himself in danger (albeit not out of suicidal desperation, thank gosh,) as well as the friction he caused by side-stepping the Winchesters. I myself am most intrigued by the two different stories Cas is telling, and what that means for him personally (is it easier for him to rationalize his actions to others in the context of a mission? Is there another reason?)
I’ll leave this open for discussion, because I am more than eager to hear people’s thoughts on this.
But all in all this was an incredible Cas episode, as well as an important one. I’m excited to see where they go from here.

Legends Recap
Because while I was determined not to (I was three episodes behind!), sometimes a girl's just got to scream into the void: "HOW DO THESE WRITERS KEEP THEIR JOBS?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Raiders of the Lost Art: Wow, I don’t care about Rip. Also, you had the fucking spear of destiny through all of season 1? Fucking incompetent.
I’ve seen the Mick scene before. *hugs Mick*
…Nate is such an annoying frat boy. 3AM blasting bad music? In a small space near other people’s sleeping quarters? And just “oh, yeah, sorry, I needed to do a thing” as an explanation? We have a name for those people: assholes.
Again: Indiana Jones is an archeologist. Not a historian.
“Anyone would have made the call to save Grey!” “Would Rip?” Answer: no, because Rip doesn’t care about the team. Remember how he did that repeatedly last season?  Why is this show trying to push Sara’s weird (and out of nowhere) crush on Rip?
I have literally no interest in Rip’s issues. Zero.
Fear of giant toads, somehow related to Mick’s mother (reference to “mommy talk”). Dragon!Mick confirmed?
Mick’s expression of “you’ve got to be kidding me” is going to be the highlight of this episode, I can tell.
I’m pleased they remember that Mick can knock someone out without harming them. I’m less pleased that they seem to have forgotten that Sara can do the same?
“Oh now, our way out is block! Pity we didn’t bring Jax, so that we could literally Firestorm fly our way out! That would have made sense, but cost precious CGI money!”
Mick’s tradition of carrying people continues.
Oh god, this episode’s only halfway over. Make it stop.
Goody, Stein insulting Mick to his face. Also, emotional problems leading to hallucinations are a serious problem??? Even if it’s just “emotions”, there are hallucinations?
NOTE TO AUDIENCE: Not having 4 PhDs or a history degree = total inability to read words!
NOTE TO AUDIENCE: Not being an inventor or a historian makes you useless!
Also, apparently getting mugged once can cause a change of career after dropping money and time into it.
Why did they move the chair into Mick’s room? HOW did they? (Why were we, the audience, deprived of the glorious scene of Mick and Stein hauling it down the hallway)
Also, Mick has been interpreting Stein’s academic technobabble without a problem the whole episode, and yet, everyone on board thinks he’s stupid…
I’m incredibly pissed at this episode for raising hopes of Len and then destroying them. Both for Mick, and for the audience.
I’m also not here for the Rip/Sara thing. Also the fact that this show seems to assume people will be super disbelieving despite being on a goddamn spaceship.
Oh, my bby! Mick’s head is literally SLICED OPEN in that scene! WTF?
I get all the Star Wars references, I just…don’t care…
George Lucas is holding the spear of destiny, which makes him a great director…or, at least, married to one. He’s a good tech guy, at least.
In which the Guy Who Has Never Been In A Fight Decides Not To Run From Evil Bad Guys Because…Plot.
Mick’s little smile when he says “ghost” and the heartbreak after it is just…unnecessary. Also, wtf, Stein, hallucinations are not a usual response to grief, okay?
Ugh.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Legion of Doom:
Damien’s intro is more interesting than 95% of the normal Legends’.
Okay, why is Merlyn having Feelings about Darkh dying? (Also, wouldn’t removing Darkh from the timeline mean that that timeline no longer happens? Why do G. Lucas’ ~~feelings~~ about filmmaking have an immediate impact but literally removing the person who doesn’t go on to do any of the shit he later does not?)
Fucking writers. This could be such a good show if they cared even a LITTLE.
I do enjoy the sheer bitchiness of the bad guys. Pity they’re Nazis. Also, do we need all the scenes of tortures?
ALSO: why the hell would his daughter help with a mystical artifact? Like, I see that she does because of plot, but couldn't they have put any effort into explaining why her specialty is required? Also, why does she have a radiation detector in her pocket when she goes to get coffee?
Bad guys: bitch-bitch-bitch.
Bad guys: bitch about each other.
Bad guys: yet MORE bitching!
Bad guys: worst bank robbers ever?
Mick’s difficulty thinking of the word is adorable. And yeah, she deserved to know. Everyone acting super weird about her, and she doesn’t know why? She would have wanted to know. It was clearly deliberate, too (I love how he goes to “asphyxiation”!)
Bad guys: going back to bitching. With swords! (See, I’d like them, but: Nazis.)
Stein is moping because Mick “spilled the beans” on a secret he shouldn’t be keeping. So sad.
Both sides figure out Eobard, finally. Also, can’t Eo just phase out through the wall?
Speedster: not…use…speed…force? I’m sorry, I don’t think I understand?
Eo’s terror face is hilarious. Also, did everyone just forget about phasing?
Stein’s family drama, yeah, yeah.  Stein: Can’t you stay? Lily: No, the budget can’t afford another regular. I mean, I have protein-folding to be doing instead of LITERAL time travel with future science! Because that’s totally how normal people/scientists make decisions!
--------------
Turncoat:
Mick’s intro is lovely.
Interesting mention about “time travel” being fun – I assume not all the memories are back in place. That, or being a Time Master is even more dull than I’d previously imagined.
I’m in for Gideon killing everybody! *notes down fic idea*
Go Mick! Use your skills! (Ray deserves all the arm twisting.)
Nate and Amaya – boring. And seriously, with the ‘falling into his arms’ thing?
Good lord, someone actually makes a plan that includes the line “and then if there’s trouble, Firestorm”? I thought I’d never see the day.
(Ray should totally go as a toy. And Ray, stop making faces at Mick – you’ve been a dick to him all season, only fair he gets some licks back in.)
“Oh you’re married to a black woman! Don’t you know we were racist back then!” says the man in late 18th century New Jersey, where rich black women could still vote. (No, really, in a handful of states black women could vote as long as they owned property. This was one of the rights that was lost when the US got itself a federal government. But the past was always racist! because we didn't make this joke enough when Kendra and Ray were dating!)
Ray’s “Mer-ry Christmas!” is amusing.
Mick identifies the problem faster than anyone else, as usual. Mick disapproves of Rip’s behavior – and Rip’s attempt to compare the two of them. For shame, Rip; as usual, thinking the worst of Mick.
“And Rory.” “That was implied.” Yeah, sure.  At least Jax gets next Captain after Sara goes! First time I’ve seen any reference to Jax’s leadership skills in…the entire series…
Really. Twice. That doesn’t make it funny.
“I’ll bet a hundred yous you’re wrong” = Mick is the best. Georgie isn’t wrong about there being rules of war, but Mick is still the best.
Jax. Jax. I love you, but there is a DIFFERENCE between “wow, I’m in charge of a handful of people and need to make decisions” and “I’m going to do a potentially life threatening activity involving literally digging into my friend’s stomach (which is filled with organs that, if nicked, could cause sepsis and death) with a knife, and I’m going to do it without a guide or any experience”. Stein wins this one hands down.
Okay, let me just be clear: somehow, Amaya has been on this ship for months and months and never heard the term ‘dating’ and is instead using ‘courting’, which is the most formal of formal terms used in the past. Because obviously a man – to use old-fashiony language like this show wants to – “called on” or “stepped out with” a woman a few times before officially declaring a courtship. Because the past didn’t have one-night stands, because people only developed libidos around the time of the internet. SERIOUSLY SHOW? People have been fucking for fun since forever. The whole “sexual revolution” thing was a revolution because women could have sex for fun WITHOUT RISK OF PREGNANCY.
Before then, they still had sex, they used what contraceptives they had and hoped for the best. There’s a reason shotgun weddings were a thing. And why
And I was told they went with the “huddling for warming -> sex” thing, I knew it was coming, it’s just…disappointing. Boring.
Jax Home Alone looks like it’s going to be fun.
Rip – the most ahistorical haircut, or the most ahistorical haircut? Ugly, too.
Georgie: “Don’t punish Mick! He’s not guilty!” Mick: “You bet your ass I am! Possibly not at the moment, but of many other things! And also, just generally speaking!”
Still bored with Nate/Amaya.
Jax Home Alone is not anywhere near as fun as I was hoping. Boo.
Mick: So I’m getting you out of here. George: No. Mick: *tries insults* *it’s not very effective* George: *stirring speech* Mick: *stirring speech* *it’s super-effective!* George: …
“Oh, no, what about George Washington and Rory!” says the person happily having sex and napping instead literally five minutes before.
Awwwww, Ratigan! That is some terrible CGI.
Why are they selling the Rip/Sara? It’s icky. (This is me: totally believing that Sara’s dead. Really. Totally. Even for five seconds.)
First, the historical critique: they shouldn’t ALL be standing around at a hanging with primed guns, that’s a recipe for disaster.
Second: I don’t even care this is glorious. Mick saves everyone! Mick tackles four people! George uses his superior height!
Also, if Mick convinced him early in the evening, then they literally spent all night talking.
First instance of Georgie-boy! (though poor Mick is still suicidal, oh dear)
George: …yeah, Americans out, stage left, pursued by bear.
Jax, Jax, baby, just shoot him in the kneecap. What the hell is with these heroes? Sara’s back and decides to use Christmas against everyone because…no, I have no idea why. Is it just me or does it feel like these episodes are massively out of order?
Awwww, Georgie and Mick drinking together <3 Mick and the criminal justice system! And then they hug! Mick finally has a good friend!
“Rebel spirit, steadfastness, crass yet effective use of language, you’re the best of what our new nation can be” – Mick is now officially embarrassed and hiding. Man, if I hadn’t already written that Barry/Mick fic, I would now.
Sara and Jax bro-ship is perfectly okay. More of that.
Mick in a hat! Mick with his new rat! <3 Mick kissing his new rat!
“We have nothing to celebrate – including Mick getting a statute!” – why, guys, why?
(Mick’s face of “yeah I still got nothing” whenever the statute is mentioned is adorable)
“Because the League may have everything – smarts, beauty, cunning, charisma…wait, where was I going with this?”

Note
Thank you so much for that DCEU post, it pins down a lot of my own thoughts about this whole "WB meddling with the DCEU directors' visions" thing. I'm also one of those people who had been increasingly frustrated every time there are news regarding the DCEU directors, and wishing that the studio had backed up and stood by them more. (1/2)
But the more I think about it, I wonder if it's not just because of my own kneejerk reaction to the relentless public and media bias against the DCEU and the need to put the blame somewhere else (i.e. the studios), instead of it being an actual problem caused by the studios. (2/2)
Sorry I didn't answer this earlier, it was late then and I was already asleep in bed
I'm so glad you liked the post, it's been sitting in my draft for days and i was nervous about putting it out there but i've gotten low key tired of subtly pointing it out in reblogs that WB has actually so far, by all evidence, done right by their directors. I really don't blame anyone for being frustrated at the possibility of there being problems at the studio, especially with the way the rumours always make it seem that a majority of the fandom's problems would be solved if they listened to their directors. I know I've read my fair share of heartbreaking fan confessions that they can't believe history repeated itself when people hated BvS, like they did MoS, and how it was tearing at their souls and they really, really wouldn't want to go through it again. I've had days where it was too much to come online because I knew what i'd be seeing, it's all so physically/mentally exhausting and deeply humiliating. So, I don't blame anyone for wanting better, but the never ending hatred is beginning to push us in a direction where we'd ignore all warning signs, and give anything, possibly even our support of the studio, for that one chance for people to just say along with us; "hey, that was a great movie!" even though it's improbable. We're being gaslighted. Forced to believe that things could be different and it's somehow an internal issue that it puts a target on your back for identifying as a DCEU fan and not an external issue. But I refuse to look at it that way, because at the end of the day, something that's still plain as day is that the movies we love, are held to a different, impossible standard than lesser movies in the same category, or any category for that matter.
I remember that one of the first reviews for BvS I read was that it was "a meat headed movie" meaning it was all about brawn and no brains, dude bro rubbish, then another said it was not filled with action but is like a work of art but that was bad. Two completely contradicting opinions on one movie and they both claim it's bad and are both wrong as attested by the movie's own quality. Just like with Man of Steel, initial reactions from people who saw the movie first, was 100% positive, with so many saying it surpassed the TDK trilogy, then the reviews came out and it was 100% opposite. Like Man of Steel, initial reactions were like "best movie ever", then suddenly it was "worst movie ever". Till then, all initial indications was that everyone had gotten with the program, the marketing to prepare people for the tone, story, length finally worked, we got built up with hope, then they crushed it, spat on it, pissed all over it, for months, then turned around and said it's the studio's fault they were such tools about it. All the critical slamming of Zack Snyder, Henry Cavill and Amy Adams and even Hans Zimmer's incredible score, is still fresh in my memory. Ben Affleck got slammed too but he initially got off easier, he was the best Batman ever and I couldn't help but think that Batman, being allowed to be a character and allowed to be re-interpreted in different ways, helped. Then WB said "hey, how about a Batman movie?" and then suddenly it's "I can't support a batman who kills!". The so called "feminist" sites that keep slamming the dceu actresses for not having "punch a dude" as some kind of default personality trait, when all we've ever heard is that punching dudes =/= strong female character, it's complexity. The idea that it's the studios fault somehow that they're biased, is equivalent to all those soulless people who said they can't empathise with Superman in the dceu because he didn't have a "moment" with a kid, because who cares about his own suffering? Or they can't accept him killing Zod because they never had him state he doesn't kill, despite Zod killing over 5,000 people and wanting to go for 6billion, like that enhances anything in anyway, or who state Superman is depressing to watch and that he was sad he saved people (i've literally heard this multiple times) or who use mental gymnastics to justify any number of reasons why they hated x, y and z. The problem with blaming the studio, is the predicament in which it exists doesn't support that statement. DCEU directors and actors are always putting their reputation on the line by being involved with it, signing into the DCEU is like signing a waiver, surrendering your reputation to the possibility of ruin. You'll get scrutinised immediately until you get a movie script, and it'll continue until you directed or acted in a movie and then it'll really get bad after the movie is released. If the studio truly has a hand in all that, the directors would walk, it's bad enough you get shit for aligning with WB, but then WB enabling that nonsense? Why the hell are you sticking around? Marvel in 8 years have rotated almost all of their directors except Favreau, Whedon, Gunn and the Russos. But their director problems are well known, even with at least three of the above directors. But that has never hampered the predictability of the public to suck up to them but somehow the DCEU; about to go four years strong, who has retained every director to release a movie, probably will retain Patty Jenkins and will most likely retain Ben Affleck, is the one with the reputation of interfering in director's visions? It's all so paradoxical.
Then you look how they treated Man of Steel like dirt despite its time length, you recall how their complaints conflict with what did happen in the movie, and then you see they did the same thing to BvS, and you suddenly wonder why you should believe that these people even give a shit about what version of movie they're watching. Those who say "Lois Lane sucks" for being competent and ahead of the curve, are not believable for saying they needed more of Lois. Those who don't care about Clark are not believable for saying they needed to see 30mins more of him, those who have been sitting at the edge of their seats for hints of negativity, slandering the movie for it's tone, story, writing and canvassing for the movie's failure, are not believable when they say they would have liked a longer cut with more of those things they hated, it's all just one big farce. And the really annoying thing, is that they're trying, and even being successful, to convince fans that they would care if the stars were aligned. That we shouldn't focus on how they screw us and the studio over repeatedly, we should focus on how the studio isn't putting all it's eggs in one basket, walking off into a market where everyone's anticipating their arrival with sledgehammers. We should focus on the fact the studio had the foresight to sell some of those eggs early, and to people who are likely to buy it, and the ones they ruined for them, weren't everything. Those ones they held back? They were better and they totally wouldn't go at it with a sledgehammer, if they had brought those along too. Logic; hater style. That's the logic they've been feeding us for months, while still bashing the movie with no distinction in the next breath, passing it over for awards, and choosing Deadpool of all movies for awards it's not merited. Trying to convince people 2016 was bad for WB, when the first quarter alone saw a huge improvement in profits beyond the studio's own estimations, courtesy in no small part, to BvS. But no, they would have liked them to put all their money and resources on the line, like they're gambling at a blackjack table, on a flimsy excuse they'll consider not being biased tools, so they can completely screw them over and remove the competition that was never allowed. I wish I lived in a reality where the billion dollars potential that each movie obviously had (considering how much money they make on negativity), came true but I don't live there. And it's very frustrating that we know every movie is still going to get hit with it, Wonder Woman will get it, JL will get it, and they'll still try to convince us that it's the studio's fault. But fair and unbiased treatment makes merit possible and merit is worth it's weight in gold but we've so far been denied it. So whatever knee jerk reaction that the fandom has, is because they deliberately put it there, through all the relentless public as well as media bias, slander from all angles, gaslighting and an elevated form of concern trolling. There's obviously more than one way to tank a franchise, if you can't tank it's fans, tank the fans faith in the product studio. We'll just have to be wary of these people and their latest reasons for wanting the opposite of what they said they did, five minutes ago.

Bad Luck
It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here. I feel like I need to vent somehow. And no one would really understand so I can’t go to anyone. The past couple weeks have been awful. Two things happened that sucked. And they happened one after an other. Like a double whammy of life just shitting on me. Lets start with the latest one.
So my dad has been battling cancer. It went away for a while then came back a few months ago. Doc said some chemo and radiation and it would go away again. But it didn’t go away. So now my dad has to go through surgery. He has to get the cancer cells removed from his throat. To do so, it requires a few different surgeries. He has to get the main one which is cutting into the throat and then removing the cells. He has to do one where they remove some muscle from his chest and put it on his throat to replace what they took out. Then he has to get a hole made so he can breathe since the procedure will cause his throat to swell which in turn closes his windpipe. Then he has to get a feeding tube attached so he can eat since he can’t swallow anything.
This is going to be so stressful and I’m already stressed out from school and work. And what if this doesn’t work. He’ll be going through all this pain for nothing. This is just shitty. Like why does it have to be my dad. He’s too nice. He doesn’t deserve this shit. And what if I lose him? I already lost my girlfriend. I don’t want to lose my dad too.
This brings me to the other event that happened. My girlfriend left me. It was bound to happen. We weren’t working out. We constantly fought and made each other miserable. I think our personalities just clashed too much. We worked extremely well as friends. But dating just didn’t work out. I just wish the breakup didn’t escalate so badly. I also wish she didn’t break up with me through text but whatever.
When she broke up with me she was nice about it. She was saying sorry and how we just didn’t work out and how she didn’t want any issues. So I was like okay this blows but she’s at least being nice. Then she started being mean and a bit vindictive. She told me not to apply to a liquor store chain she works at because she doesn’t wanna work with me anymore. That’s understandable but it’s not really her choice. She isn’t dating me anymore. But she then stated how she talked to the managers and told them not to hire me. Then told me how she would do everything in her power to make sure I don’t get hired.
Let’s think about this for a second. This is very vindictive and very petty. She broke up with me and yet is acting like this. I need another job to make ends meet and that liquor store would’ve been the easiest route to fix my problems but she had to go and do that? Why? It’s just hateful. I wouldn’t even be at the store she works at. I would be at another one. I would make sure of that just because I don’t want any issues. Plus my friend John, who also works there, would make sure the managers wouldn’t put me at her store. Plus there’s no way they would do that. It’s a situation that would potentially cause issues. No manager would allow that. It’s just not logical.
So after she did that I just didn’t respond. I wasn’t going to give in to that and I didn’t want any fights. I planned on getting my credit card from her cause she still had it. At this point my friends already knew. And they weren’t happy. But I told them not to do anything cause I don’t want issues. One of my friends told me he would go in and get my credit card for me. Cause if my ex is being vindictive she would most likely say something when I got my card and if she did I would probably react badly because breakup. It’s logical so I agreed. But I warned and said she might mention you getting the card instead of me. It’s just how she is. So my friend tells me if she says anything he will go off on her because she has no right to say anything cause she broke up with me so she shouldn’t act like that.
I hoped she would be more mature and not say anything cause I didn’t want issues. But nope. She ended up texting me saying “Next time you want something get it yourself don’t send someone.” My friend was next to me when she sent it. Instantly my mind went “fuck. but maybe he didn’t see?” So I look at him and he’s looking at my phone then looks at me and just goes to where she is. So now I’m just like “fuck this is what I was trying to avoid.” And he just went off on her. About the lying, the being mean with the breakup, and just how he felt in general. It was bad. I didn’t want that to happen but what was I gonna do.
Then later on she asks me for her stuff back. I agree but I was gonna bring someone with me just in case I lost my cool. But she didn’t like that. Maybe didn’t wanna get yelled at again. Maybe she though I told my friend to do it. Who knows. I still have her stuff. I put it in a bag just in case she ever wants it back. It’s been a week or so though so I doubt she still wants it.
I should probably clarify on the breakup and why it happened. We were just arguing a lot. I feel like we just didn’t have the patience for each other anymore. We tried to work it out before but it just didn’t work. She kept saying I never tried and that she gave me chances. But I did try.
I’m a very blunt person and I get angry easily. I say how I feel and I don’t mince my words. She didn’t like that which is understandable. No one wants to be with someone who is stressed and angry a lot. It pushed her away. I should’ve fixed it sooner but by the time I was starting to understand why I did what I did, it was too late.
When I was asked about the breakup and people ask why she was saying I didn’t try because she was posting that on various social media. People would question it. Like one person told me, “You didn’t try? Is she fucking serious? You took days off from work, which is money you needed, to go all the way to New York and make sure she drove down okay. You took her to work for almost a month because she didn’t have another reliable form of transportation since her card broke down. You made more time for her than you did for your friends. You did all this and she still says you didn’t try? That’s not trying, that’s fucking dedication.”
My friend is right in a way. She probably doesn’t see it but I did a lot. But from another standpoint, it probably just wasn’t enough to her. She most likely wanted more than what I could do. She most likely views me as this dickhead who just never cared. But that’s not true. I always cared. Yeah I’m blunt and angry but I always did stuff that showed I cared. It just wasn’t enough I suppose. Maybe I just wasn’t enough.
Toward the end of the relationship she started lying. She lied about being at some guys house. She lied when my friend yelled at her saying we’ve been broken up even though we just broke up the day she was being yelled at. The fact she lied about being at this guys house is just sketchy. She claims she didn’t cheat but how am I suppose to believe her when she lied about it. What’s to say she isn’t lying about not cheating. It’s not something someone would admit. But I guess it literally doesn’t matter. We’re broken up and she lied so it doesn’t matter what she did.
Regardless of everything that happened I still miss her. I shouldn’t. I definitely shouldn’t not after the lying and being sketchy. But idk. I think back on the good memories we had and it just makes me miss her. I wish things were different. I wish she didn’t lie. I wish she didn’t just have the mentality of “I do whatever I want”. I wish I got a hold of my anger better. I wish I could’ve done more. I was gonna try and stop her from leaving but I just didn’t see a point. No matter how much I just wanted to fix things, she clearly didn’t want to. She just wanted to be done with me. And it sucks. I just wish she doesn’t see me as this monster. Some massive asshole. Cause I really did try. I really did love her. Hell, I still do love her. Idk when it will stop. I hope it stops soon. It hurts a lot.
Even through everything that happened I still wish her well. I hope her life is amazing. I hope she gets what she wants. I don’t hate her. Quite the opposite. Deep down I know she’s a good person. She just has some things to sort through. So I really hope her life continues to be good. I hope her parents keep trying and treating her kindly. I just want her happy.
And that’s what I don’t think people understand. Yeah she was acting shitty but I did too. I wasn’t great either. So I hope she learns from this. I’m learning from it. I don’t think I’m meant for people. Idk.
I was thinking maybe suicide. Maybe just kill myself that way no one ever has to deal with me again. But there’s still things I want to experience. So i’ve been thinking of just moving away. Get away from everything and everyone. And then just not date or befriend anyone. It’ll just save everyone the trouble.
This ended up being much longer than I anticipated. But yeah, I just hope my dads surgery goes well. And I truly hope my ex finds happiness in whatever she decides to do. She’s a good girl and I hope someone else will be kind enough to realize this despite her behavior and treat her better than I could.
