5. A song from a lifelong favorite artist
I’m making the executive decision that since 7th grade counts as “lifelong” because there isn’t really anyone I would call a “lifelong favourite artist” from before then, and that’s still half of my life. All that being said, Lake Effect Kid by Fall Out Boy. My favourite song by my favourite artist, and they have been my favourite since 2007. <3
16. Your favorite childhood song
This is a tough one. There was always music plaing when Iw as a child, because my dad loves music so much (which is probably where I got it from as well). It’s hard to pick an objective favourite, because there are so many good ones, but I think I’ll go with Drops of Jupiter by Train. It’s just as beautiful when I listen to it today as it was when I was a kid sitting in the back seat of my parents’ car, looking out the window at the night sky and feeling a n g s t y and deep lmao.
22. A song you related to in the past and present, but for different reasons
Oh this is a tough one. I’m genuinely not sure how to answer this one, I can’t think of any songs that fit this criteria. Instead I’m going to give you two songs, one I related to in the past, and one I relate to in the present, and I hope this is a sufficient compromise haha (and also it’s a good excuse to list MORE SONGS!)
Past: Fifteen by Taylor Swift. I remember actually being 15 and being (not actually) heartbroken because the boy I liked said he liked me back and we had a sort-of thing for a while, which he then ended and it kind of messed me up for a while, and I remember listening to this song a lot. It’s not something I relate to anymore, because that was a long time ago and also I’m now 26 and have a lot more life experience, but at the time I really appreciated that this song existed.
Present: Woman by Kesha. I’m just a really strongly independent person and this song speaks to me. It’s just so strong and empowering. I feel this song in my soul, it’s everything I want to be as a person, and I think I’m doing pretty well at it tbh, I’m just living my life for myself and doing what I want and it’s great.

Aquapolypse
basically years into the future humans mutated into fish people (and various other creatures but this primarily focuses on the fish people)
Zak and Zenna - twinsies! based off betta fish! very pretty, very fashionable, very fighty. strong familial bond. i adore them
Solv - based off piranhas! Baby’s First Nonbinary OC, they have a crush on Zenna, and very stereotypically Emo. listens to mcr and cries that they were born in the wrong generation
Xavier - swordfish! VERY punk. he has a crush on Solv, who, as we know, has a crush on Zenna. 10th grade me wouldve played this up as a love triangle but i am so much wiser now and resolving it with polyamory

a the last unicorn-esque story, but with a wood elf! she’s the last of her kind but has no idea. she’s just been vibing in the woods for a while until modern times comes along and builds a housing plan right next to her woods. she gets lonely at night and sings sometimes, causing rumors to spread that the woods are haunted. 2 young people (i picture them to be about 20???) decide to check it out, find her, and immediately think shes adorable and bring her home as a wacky 3rd roommate.
Rhathel - the elf in question! shes very strong and very smart and capable, but her lack of knowledge when it comes to modern human culture causes many to think she’s an idiot. NOT the case. she will beat you up
V - disaster punk nb lesbian! falls in love with Rhathel almost instantly
Carlos - distinguished gay(tm). V’s best friend and voice of reason. bit of a nerd and a techie. always got the Latest Gadgets. listens to carly rae jepsen and cries
Untitled 2 But Superheroes
a group of teens hanging out in places they shouldnt be leads to them getting involved in a freak accident that bestows them all with super powers! however, unlike a lot of superhero stories, they dont have any sort of mentor whatsoever to tell them how to be a hero, and well. when you leave these idiots to their own devices they are truly idiots!
Lola/Lolita Light - the self proclaimed leader of the team. consumes a lot of superhero media and magical girl anime, thus reasons that she knows exactly what to do in these situations, but usually ends up getting them into worse places than they started. she gained the ability to manipulate light molecules and decided her alter ego should be a magical girl
Ness/Frostbite - sarcastic and cold, but is actually the mom friend of the group. she loves her friends deeply but won’t say it. i very clearly picture her with blonde to blue ombre hair. she, as you may have guessed, can control ice and snow
Brandon and Brendon - Those Assholes(tm). we all knew them in high school and probably got bullied by them a few times. i do love their character development though where they realize they’re assholes and start making up for it. anyway their powers work in conjunction and i havent *quite* figured out the mechanics of it yet, but they have to be in close proximity to each other in order to do anything. this effectively starts to rid them of their “no homo bro” attitude when they realize they literally have to hug every time they want to power up. i forgot what their alter egos were but i THINK it had something to do with storms and electricity?? i dont remember
Dante/Inferno - the antagonist who eventually comes around and joins the team. he was initially part of the friend group but got so fed up with constantly being excluded and bullied by them that he literally formed a whole ass supervillain ego when he realized he had fire powers. the team does realize how shitty they were to him and they BOTH have redemption arcs.

Coronam - a spn demon oc i made in like 10th grade. goes by Corey for short. i still love him so much. he’s definitely an edgelord and i put him through the “would your oc be a tumblr sexyman” quiz and the result was he would be on par with the onceler

SECTION ONE OF FOUR : BIOGRAPHY
morgan antonia harold stark is born on a dewy winter morning, second child of tony stark & pepper potts. they are the connecting sinew of two completely different worlds ; one made of heroism and personal glory, the other of board rooms and professionalism. they spend much of their childhood travelling between all the different places their parents need be, at any one time - but new york is always home.
as for many children, summers are spent enjoying life. morgan gets to be the child that they are, soaking up their sun on the beaches of the exotic places they can afford to visit. summers are FREEDOM, in their books, from all the expectations of the rest of the year. burdens that certainly feel like so, though they try and act as if they don’t.
at home, they are privately educated and expected to excel. this is fine. they’re the child of TONY STARK ; of course there are expectations, and they can take the pressure on their shoulders with grace, they think, so long as they are always able to dance.
it’s an unexpected talent. in day to day, they are clumsy - even as a child, they bumped their head and scratched their knees in an all manner of avoidable accidents. they will never be one to wear heels in fear of toppling, and so, the insistence to be enrolled with a local company after watching a performance of swan lake makes their parents chuckle. they expect morgan to QUIT when they realize they aren’t capable of such delicate movements and graceful twirls, but six months later when they sit in the audience and witness them perform in don quixote, tony is not able to hide the tears that spring to his eyes.
so begins a lifetime of ballet lessons four times weekly, recitals every other month. they swiftly become one of the company’s most prized students, a prima ballerina in all ways but title. they are known to be clumsy, and they laugh along with those that poke harmless fun - but when they tie on their pointe shoes and step onto a stage, they are something different. something beautiful. something world ending.
soon enough, they get old enough to see their parents for WHO they are ; and to understand the way in which the world, at large, sees them too. they think of their mother as... powerful and groundbreaking, and almost everyone agrees. they think of their father as brave and strong and heroic, most of all - and they realize, over time, that there are those out there who simply do not see it. morgan thinks her father is the most SELF SACRIFICING man she’ll ever know. they lie awake a lot, when they’re little, worried about if he’ll come home - knowing that if the situation calls for it, he’ll sacrifice his last breath to save them all, and fearing the one time it will be required. tabloids and gossip websites call him things like vapid and selfish, and one day, morgan asks their mother to explain what it means when dad is called a womanizer by the press. pepper does not treat the subject as taboo, instead fixing a soft expression in place - the words she says forming a key part of morgan’s character : your father’s heart is simply a few sizes too big. that’s why he makes such a good hero, now ; because he cares so much. when he was younger, though, people saw him using it in ways they thought were wrong, and they’ll probably never let that go.
much later, they’ll think that they relate a little bit too much to that sentiment. that aside from natural confidence, they might just have inherited that too big heart from their FATHER, too. morgan is electric. growing close to others isn’t difficult when you’re a magnetic force, and morgan is never without company. they value deep connection, the most. they don’t think they could ever fall for someone who didn’t know them blind. but they learn, as they grow, that they enjoy fleeting romance. even if they know they won’t allow it last, it is nice to be entwined in another’s life, for a time.
SECTION TWO OF FOUR : OVERVIEW
born on february 20th, 1994. second ( and middle ) child of tony stark and pepper potts.
no real drama, life or parents wise. tony and pepper were very good parents who loved their kids a LOT, so morgan never knew anything but.
suffered bacterial meningitis as a child, resulting in a loss of hearing in their right ear.
expectations were rampant - from themselves, and from many others in their life. they were, after all, tony stark’s child ; they were meant to be a chip off the block, so to speak. this was all well and good, given that they certainly had the capacity for greatness, but it has left them with something of a perfectionist complex in adult life. they’re one of their company’s most prized jewels, and holds the honor of being the student with the most starring roles under their tutu. their dance talent shocks EVERYBODY who knows them due their undeniable clumsiness in day to day life, but that doesn’t really matter.
they were an early bloomer, so to speak, and this has been a blessing and curse. they’ve always been comfortable with who they are. other people have not.
SECTION THREE OF FOUR : HEADCANONS
morgan loves love, but perhaps is not as built for it as they would like. they get a certain thrill from flirtation and they enjoy being with people. it isn’t a crime, they think, to date often and never truly commit. there have, of course, been those who have treated it as such. they’re not a stranger to slurs, and they know that there are certain rumors ( some of which there’s truth to ) spread of them, routinely. but no one raised in tony and pepper’s home has much SHAME attached to who they are.
they had just turned four when they were struck down with bacterial meningitis. their mother thought that it was nothing but a summer flu, but when their fever began to reach unheard of heights, the PANIC set in. the doctor who saw to them insisted they be brought to the nearest emergency room immediately, and they didn’t see the outside of that hospital again until two weeks had passed. they survived UNSCATHED, at least - in a sense. single sided deafness in her right ear, specifically. her parents were told that they were incredibly lucky that they were even alive, and that they should be grateful for such a small price. they didn’t feel the way they were told they should, but they certainly passed on the sentiment to their child when they grew and wondered why they were not quite the same to the other kids they knew. her parents learned asl and they learned enough to make their life that little bit easier. it was by no means easy - the learning or the life that followed - but they ereyoung and adaptable, and it served as a harsh reminder that sometimes, the world will take. in their mid teens, they underwent the surgery to implant a transcranial cros - a bone anchored hearing aid, to you and i, that provided a MARKED improvement.
they’ve never actually had a relationship ( by name ), completely by design. they’ve never DATED. morgan enjoys flings, they enjoy flirtation, they love sex - but they won’t put themselves in a position to disappoint someone when they can’t be what they want them to be. they’re open with anyone they find herself involved with. no strings attached, non exclusive, it’s never going to go anywhere. anyone who doesn’t listen, anyone who ends up hurt because they believe they’ll change her mind…. that’s on them.
they can be quite… vain, to put it mildly. you have to keep in mind that morgan is someone who has been set up from a young age as… a real beauty. their looks have been valued, even if they have not been. they’re aware that they’re conventionally attractive, and they’re aware that it makes their life easier in a lot of ways. it does not, however, help them to be taken more seriously in life.
their grade point average is in the top tenth percentile, a standing they’ve maintained for years. not only are they BEAUTY, but they’re also quite literally brains.

Meet VOILÀ, the Duo Riding Their Heartbreaks to Greener Pastures [Q&A]
VOILÀ has found their sound. That’s not always an easy thing for artists to say less than a year after releasing their debut single, but the Los Angeles-based duo has carved out a niche for themselves with earnest lyrics and passionate songwriting. Now with their debut album on the horizon in 2019, they’re doing everything they can to make their impact impossible to overlook, while maintaining their relatability in the process.
Luke Eisner and Gus Ross first met in a classroom at USC, and it wasn’t long before they began creating their own music outside the course. The duo DJ’d plenty of parties during their time in college, but eventually they moved on from the electronic realm in an effort to better express themselves through the music. Listen to their latest song, “Don’t,” which slotted in at #19 on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, and you’ll understand why it was a great decision; with refreshing guitars and heartfelt lyricism, VOILÀ makes it easy for listeners to access them, and hard to turn away from once they have.
They certainly sound genuine when their voices are playing through the speakers, and it shines through just as clearly when talking to them in person. They’re quick to laugh and crack jokes, keeping a light-hearted nature even as they thoughtfully discuss their music and what they hope to accomplish with it. We recently caught up with the duo to talk about their new single, as well as a few career highlights and pivotal moments in their journey so far.
OTW: You recently dropped “Don’t” -- tell us about the inspiration and story behind the song.
Luke: We started with a guitar riff, and then in terms of the story behind the song, I compare it to an analogy. Basically when I was growing up, there was this willow tree in my front yard, and I’d always try and climb it, and everyone was like, “Why are you trying to climb this tree?” My friends were like, “You’ll get hurt,” my parents said I was wasting my time; I still have this scar on my elbow from falling off of it. But what they didn’t know is that when you did get to the top, it was the most beautiful view of my subdivision, the kind of view that made you forget how much you hated the climb. And I grew up and fell in love with a girl who was like that willow tree, so that’s kind of what the song is about to me.
Gus: Exactly, the climb -- is it worth the pain? It’s an addiction you just can’t get rid of.
Luke: Yeah, it paralleled romance so much, where everyone is like, “It’s not good for you,” and you even know it’s not good for you, like my elbow is split open. But it’s that one thing that meant something to you, so you just keep coming back to it.
OTW: You both met at USC, and graduated in May. What was your biggest takeaway from your time at school?
Luke: Gus is sitting here in a leopard shirt, that’s the biggest takeaway. [Laughs]
Gus: Actually though, we met on the first day of class; it’s weird. He came and sat by me, for the record. We just kept working and working on a few different projects, and about a year ago we really got down to business with this. And then it’s been non-stop ever since, which is wicked.
Luke: USC’s very good at selecting people to come to the school that are passionate about something, so that was the biggest takeaway. This Trojan network thing, just being around all the kids they bring there is so invaluable.
OTW: You guys started out making electronic music, and then you switched to more indie-pop because it felt you could tell your stories better. Do you think you’ve found your sound now?
Gus: 100%. We just finished writing new songs with two different writing teams, and we have the sound. Every single song we make now, we can say that’s a VOILÀ song. It took a while, it took 3 years of just sitting, writing, making music, to really stumble across it. I think that’s important.
Luke: It’s funny, now we can go back to old songs that don’t have that sound, and we’re starting to re-do some of them. The idea is still there since the story is still true to us, but we’re redoing it with our new sound. That’s exciting.
OTW: Was there a moment where you knew you found it, or was it a gradual change?
Gus: Definitely gradual. We’ve written one album that’s unreleased, 17 songs. Off that album, we probably have 10 signature VOILÀ songs, and the rest were sort of the outliers. The next batch of songs that we’re on now, which is another album’s worth, all the songs are more in-line. Instead of ten being very similar, we have 12 or 13, and you sort of get closer and closer to a sound through that.
OTW: In terms of your lyrics, you guys sing about heartbreak in a lot of your music. What do you think is the best way to get through a breakup?
Luke: For me, it’s always literature, for everything. Whenever I’m trying to find the words to say something, you put it in a song, or you look for the words somewhere else. I was going back to a lot of the classic novels and romance structures; when you read them, it’s something about witnessing something else go through it even though they’re fictional. It’s the relatability, and the happy ending even if there isn’t one.
Gus: For me, I’m not good at it, so I’m probably the wrong person to ask. [Laughs] I think you have to embrace it, though. I’m a big believer that being broken early in your life is very beneficial when you can look back at it; I had a horrible experience that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. But, it’s the best thing that ever happened to me, it really makes you know yourself. But I can’t tell you how to get out of it, you just have to power through.
Luke: Everyone says to wear your heart on your sleeve; why not wear a broken heart? You have to embrace it, be proud of the scar.
OTW: Gus, you grew up in London while Luke grew up in Wisconsin. When you guys came to LA, what was your first culture shock moment?
Gus: Everything’s massive in the US, everything. From the cars to the signs to the people, everything. When I touched down, I accidentally missed orientation, I ended up skipping up the whole thing. I was there and I was thinking “this surely won’t matter,” and it was the biggest mistake. I got here and everything was dark, it was 9pm and the last day of orientation. The doors were locked and I didn’t have a card, I had to bang on the doors to get in. I had to wait until Monday and I came on a Saturday, it was miserable for a day or two until I finally got in the swing of it. The culture shock though, I still have that now. I don’t think it stops.
Luke: For me, when I got to LA, I got scouted to do modeling. Being from small-town Wisconsin, like buzzcut, beer drinking, football Wisconsin, I thought that didn’t exist. I vividly remember standing in this shoot, and there’s a guy with a bucket of potatoes, and he’s tossing the potatoes at me to catch for the pictures. I’m in this long robe, I’m wearing makeup for the first time in my life and my hair is all wavy, and I remember thinking, “what has happened?” [Laughs] It all hit me at one time, literally, as the potatoes were flying at me.
OTW: Do you still do modeling? How hard is it to balance that with your music?
Luke: You know, it fuels the music thing, because it’s my income. Every time I’m working I’m thankful for that opportunity, because it allows us to progress here, financially. So I’m thankful, but every time I do it I’m reminded about how passionate I am about this.
OTW: This summer, you opened up for Kesha, The Fray, and X Ambassadors. Talk about what that experience was like for you guys.
Gus: Amazing. It really opens your eyes to how open you’ve got to be, as an artist, when you’re singing about your own tragedies on stage. You really have to embrace that; there’s no act up there, everyone is seeing into your own life. In Kesha’s case, it was like 15,000 people, it’s insane. It makes you grow suddenly, and realize your vision very fast.
Luke: When you hear people singing your own heartbreak back at you, it’s an interesting concept. It’s both healing and appalling at the same time. For me, performing with The Fray was one of those full-circle moments. The first song I had ever performed in my life was in my fourth grade talent show, it was “How to Save a Life.” And then there was a moment where I was watching them do it, I was speechless. You just hope that you can create music that there’s another kid in fourth grade who can get the song, and then they’ll open up for you.
OTW: What’s the atmosphere you want to create at your live shows?
Gus: I think it’s kind of a mixture, between an Ed Sheeran show which can be very intimate, and then you also have the rocky pop aspect of a Twenty One Pilots show. You have the anthemic song where everyone can move, but you also have a number that’s more introspective, more raw. It’s sort of these people not really knowing exactly where they are, there’s happy and proud moments, but you also really have to stop and think for a second.
Luke: I want people to walk away feeling like they’ve had every opportunity to access us, whether that’s physically, like after the show I want to meet as many people as I possibly can. Same with the music, I want the communication to be so thorough, that they really feel like they’ve been through the story. I think accessibility is one thing that makes a lot of performers that I admire.
OTW: Last question -- who are some Ones to Watch artists that you’re excited about?
Gus: Ooh, there’s quite a few. We were just on BBC Introducing last weekend, there’s a guy who we’ve been on there a couple times called Jack Vallier.
Gus: Also, I love Ella Mai, British singer. She’s incredible, she really is something. That “Boo’d Up” song I saw blew up, but she’s been at it for a little bit, I really like her. A very different genre from us. And then Luke’s kind of into country music.
Luke: I love country music, I love the lyricism. I think some of the best lyricists are in Nashville. There’s this guy Spencer Crandall, who had found our music and messaged me. He’s unbelievable, he’s so accessible. He replies to everybody, he messages people all the time.

max/chad part 2
(I’ve randomly decided this story takes place in like 2010 when Max would have actually been in high school)
Max and Chad had become very close in the following weeks. They were still seen as losers by many, but at least they each had someone to share that experience with. At first, Max just liked not having to eat lunch alone every day, and having someone to take the bus with. But she was surprised how well she actually got on with Chad. He was a total cunt on the outside, especially to anyone who wasn’t her, and she liked that. She hated people just as much as him. But he had a soft centre, which Max appreciated as well.
It turned out the two had drama class together, which was great because most of the other kids in drama didn’t find it nearly as fun as Max. They just thought it was an easy grade. He didn’t expect it, but Chad really loved performing. He wanted to be a comedian, which Max thought was a perfect fit considering how easy he could get a laugh. The only thing Max didn’t like was that she was always assigned female parts in the scenes they performed. She knew it made sense, but she preferred the rare occasions she got to play a dude. Even a crusty old man, she’d fucking take it over some prissy role.
Max also found herself hanging out at his place after school. She much preferred it than going home. Chad was big into World of Warcraft, which Max was quite vocal about how dorky he thought that was. Max liked Runescape, which Chad thought was really gay. But together they usually just played a round of Mario Kart or Mortal Kombat.
“Why the fuck do you always play as Reptile?” Chad teased.
“Uhh, cause he’s the most badass character?”
“Come on! Sub-Zero? Sonya Blade! Fuckin’ Scorpion!”
“Nah. Reptile... Why the fuck ya’ always playing as Mileena?”
“Cause she’s got her tits out. Plus, the chicks are less bulky you can jump around and shit.”
“Who cares about jumping around?”
“Well not you, cause you have no strategy. You just push random buttons until you can get something to happen.”
“Fuck up, cunt! I’ll get something to happen alright...” It was true, she was a bit of a button masher, but she had a certain technique with it. It wasn’t nearly as random as one may think. Biting her lip in concentration, she managed a few lucky combos, draining her friends energy bar.
“Reptile Wins,” the game announced.
Max laughed. “Ha! Your strategy is garbage!!”
“Whatever, cunt... You got lucky...”
Max smirked, tossing her controller next to her on the couch. “I’m bored with games. Let’s do something else.”
“Why? Cause you know ya’ won’t get lucky twice in a row?”
“Maybe,” she replied playfully. None the less, Chad switched off the TV. “So...” Max went on. “Do you have any music we could listen to?” Without asking, she plopped down in Chad’s computer chair and opened up iTunes. Chad was the only kid Max knew who had his own computer in his bedroom. It must be great to go online without having to be in the living room, in front of everyone. Scrolling through iTunes, Max made a face. “Black Eyed Peas? Kesha? Kiss Me Through the Phone by Souija Boy!? Dude, your music taste is fucking horrible!”
“Those are good songs!”
“What the fuck is this!?” Max clicked a song entitled “Laffy Taffy.” A rap song with a beat that sounded like a cheap ring tone echoed through the tinny computer speakers. “Shake that Laffy Taffy?” Max laughed, observing the lyrics. “That’s retarded!”
“It’s fucking catchy as hell, ya’ snob!” Chad smirked, sauntering over to his friend. “That’s a tight ass beat!” he declared, grooving to the music. Max laughed. Chad’s dancing was as bad as his music playlist, but it was kind of endearing.... He took Max by each hand, pulling her from the office chair and forcing her to dance with him. Max laughed, throwing her head back. But she gave in. Somewhat at least.
“Hang on, hang on,” she finally said. “I’ll show you some good music!” She opened up YouTube, typing in “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. Chad laughed as soon as he saw the thumbnail.
“That guy’s wearing eyeliner!”
“So what?”
“This is some emo shit!”
“It’s good. Just listen,” Max insisted, going back over to Chad’s futon.
“Fine...” he relented, taking a seat beside her. Max was clearly a different type of music listener than Chad. She was the type who had to listen quietly and appreciate the song, which Chad found kind of pretentious but still... Max closed her eyes, slowly bobbing her head as she listened. As the song was coming to a close, she felt a hand on her, breaking her from her trans. She looked down at Chad’s hand on her thigh.
“What are you doing....?” She raised an eyebrow, looking at him.
“I...I thought you’d like that...” He averted his eyes, retracting his hand rather meekly. Uncharacteristic for him, Max thought.
“What are you talking about?”
Chad took a breath, trying a new tactic. He gripped Max by the waist, pulling her towards him and planted an innocent, inexperienced peck on her lips.
Max blinked, gently shoving him away. “Why are you kissing me...?”
“I...I like you....” It was so awkward, it made Max cringe. “I...Thought you liked me too....?”
“Well, I do...But...Not like that. Why did you think...I wanted to kiss you...?”
“I’m sorry...”
“No, I’m not upset.....”
“You’re a girl....You’re always coming over.... I thought.....”
“Chad... You’re cute alright, but just cause a girl is your friend doesn’t mean she like likes you. That’s retarded....” Max stopped herself, realizing that might be a little harsh. “I mean....I’m not saying a girl wouldn’t like you, it’s just....” God, she hated this.
“Max, I’m sorry....Just forget it happened.... I still wanna be friends with you, I didn’t mean it like that....”
“Well.... Why do you like me anyways? There’s nothing to like. Is it just cause I’m the only girl who will talk to you?” she tried to be playful once more.
“No. I just think you’re really cool, and you’re cute. That’s all.”
“Well....What if I wasn’t a girl? Would....Would you still like me?”
“Uhh... I’m not gay...But...Well....I mean, probably, honestly....”
“Really?” Max raised an eyebrow. It wasn’t the answer she expected, but she liked it. Then she smirked. “That sounds pretty gay to me!” she laughed.
“Maybe I am gay! You look like a fuckin’ boy anyways, you know that?”
“Really?”
“Yeah! If we went on a date somewhere everyone’d think we were gay anyways,” he laughed.
“Yeah...” Max laughed back. “Sometimes...You know, sometimes...I wish I was a guy...”
“Well, you could always get a sex-change operation. Ya’ just go into the doctor, and ya’ come out a dude.”
“It aint that easy, dumb cunt!” Max tossed a cushion at his friend.
“Okay! Look, I’ll pretend we’re homos. Just lemme take ya’ out somewhere.”
“Ughhh....Okay, okay, I’ll make you a deal. You can ask me again in...Umm... 2 months. Until then, ya’ can’t bring anything like that up. Deal?”
“Deal. I’ll snag ya’ in two months, just wait...”

What was your coolest Halloween costume: Uh... hm. Tough. I’m gonna go with my Phantom of the Opera Red Death costume sophomore year of college, because I made the mask myself. It was based on the movie version, obvs, and of course it was far from perfect, but it still turned out awesome and since it was also for a class, I got the highest grade on that mask-making project. So booyah. But in high school, I was Darth Vader, Eric Draven aka The Crow, Batman, and then I was gonna do The Joker (Dark Knight version) but I could only get the makeup and scars and not the suit, so my friend lent me a purple fairy costume and I was a Joker Fairy. I won a costume contest.
What’s your favorite 90s show: Uhhhhhh... I suddenly forgot literally all 90s shows. I didn’t really watch TV in the 90s, so... hang on lemme look some up. Okay uh... Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, I really liked those. Um, Freaks & Geeks was pretty good? Oh, Friends is pretty classic.

Have you ever been to Las Vegas?: Once, my freshman year of college. My bff from high school’s mom paid for us to go see Avenged Sevenfold at the Hard Rock Café, only it was RIGHT before my very first finals. So obviously I said FUCK IT cause finals week was Thur-Wed, and I didn’t have any finals until Monday at 8:00 AM. So we flew out Friday morning, went to the concert Saturday night, and flew back Sunday. And then I went to my final hating the world but happy for the experience. Since I was still 17 at the time, we didn’t do any gambling or drinking but neither of us wanted to anyway so it was all good.
Favorite pair of shoes: Whichever one I’m wearing the most at any given time lmao
Favorite fruit: Probably mangoes, I really can’t resist them

Stupidest thing you’ve ever done: Only one thing? Jeez. Um. It’s either a) the time I stuck a prop necklace for a play I was doing in a floor socket, nearly electrocuted myself, destroyed the necklace the day before opening, and looked like a moron in front of my cast and crew, all because my brain literally went, “hey, this part of the necklace is flat! I bet it would fit in that slot on the socket!”; b) the time I tried networking at the place I was temping because I wanted them to offer me a permanent job, and ended up so drunk that I passed out on the MAX home, stumbled off a stop, fell over and puked on my boots, and had to be taken to the emergency room; or c) the time I was at a band trip up the river in high school and wanted to swim across the river with my friends, forgetting that I was a scrawny weakling until I was at the mercy of the current, nearly got run over by a jet boat, and was so tired by the time I crawled to the rocks on the other side that they were already ready to go back across, I had to rest, and then almost drowned trying to swim/float my way back over because I was so tired. Straw poll, what do you think was the stupidest?

Hours of sleep: Who the hell knows anymore? Usually 6+, often 12 because ~my brain doesn’t work properly~.

On Point With: DJ Brian Richards
This DJ is just as much at home spinning the big sexy parties, the neighborhood bar throwbacks and/or the drag shows. Meet one of NYC’s busiest music masters, Brian Richards!

DJ Brian Richards: Hi Jim! I just want to start by saying thanks so much for the interview. Thotyssey is one of my favorite blogs, and I've enjoyed reading it in the last year! Kudos to you.
Many thanks! So, we're getting into some nice weather, finally... are you enjoying it?
I am loving this weather... this is my favorite time of year. In fact, it was the spring of 2010, I believe, when I started getting inspired to becoming a serious DJ.
What was specifically going on around that time that sparked the idea?
Well, I seem to get more creative in the spring and the fall. That year specifically is when I discovered new mixing programs and more access to music; the more I dove into it I thought, “Wow I think I can actually DJ!” Plus, I was really loving the dance music that was out around that time.
Remind us of an example of what was big that year.
Well, the first song that comes to mind is "DJ Got Us Falling In Love" by Usher and Pitbulll. I was drawn to songs specifically made for the dancefloor, and aimed at just having fun. That was the trend then, and it sparked so many songs in that realm. And of course there was Kesha, Gaga, Rihanna and Queen Bee, and all the pop divas we've grown to love over the years.

So, where's your hometown?
I grew up in Woodbridge, NJ.
And what were you into growing up there, like creatively or otherwise?
My love for music dates as far back as I can remember. I also was a little comedian: I loved playing out skits with friends and imitating TV shows. Laughter and music then, and to this day, are my two loves.
My parents had given me a portable record player, and they had a collection of old 45's. I would spend hours playing that, probably more than any toys I had. One of my favorites as a kid was "The Monster Mash." They had the actual record. One day in probably 4th grade, I talked the teacher into bringing my record player in class for Halloween, and I played that record for all the kids in their Halloween costumes. They all danced around, and I just remember laughing hysterically. It was pure joy! So I guess I had the DJ gene in me from a little kid!
I would make [my friends] play with me that we were on the radio. We would make actual tapings of "shows," just being silly and pretending to put on a radio show. Hell, I did that into my early teens [laughs]!
Sounds like the perfect DJ origin story!
When did you start to become exposed to NYC nightlife?
It goes back pretty far... farther then I admit sometimes [laughs]! I started going out in the early 90′s, if you can believe it! I made a friend in high school who was older then his years. He knew all the places in the city, and took me to them.
At that time, the places in the city we explored were the Dugout in the Village (now Rockbar), The Palladium... I think there was a place called "The Tool," if I'm not mistaken... Uncle Charlies... God, all these legendary places.
The first gay club I ever walked into was in New Jersey at the legendary Den, which sadly just closed last year. I spent the 90's in Jersey at a place called the Colosseum, and would venture to New York for the Roxy, the original XL, and G Lounge, to name a few. I was lucky enough in recent years to play at both the Den and G Lounge.
What's your favorite environment to DJ in?
You know, for me the environment isn't as important as the crowd. If it's a fun crowd that loves to sing and dance, then I'll play there! I've done everything from small bars to rooftop events, and they all have their share of great memories.
Do you have any strong opinions on who should or shouldn't be considered a "DJ" based on what they bring to the gigs, the tech they use, etc.?
This has been an ongoing debate among nightlife professionals. I have so much admiration and respect for the old school DJs who learned it "the hard way" with turntables. I can only speak from my own experience using my Traktor Pro software on my laptop and a controller that, yes, may make it "easier" in the regard of mixing... but your talent must still be on point. You still must know how to read the crowd, know who you are playing for, and have the chops to deal with all the rejection and ups and downs that come with this business. The bottom line is how you left that crowd feeling. So anyone who has staying power in nightlife, it did not come easy, regardless of the medium they choose.
I do get annoyed by the jokes that "anyone can DJ", etc. Okay, then give it a try and see how easy it is! I dare ya.
It obviously sucks, for a pro like yourself, to see big venues throw money at a Kardashian to basically stand behind a laptop while someone else hits play on an iTunes playlist.
Well, of course. That is an ugly side to pop culture. If you can fill a club regardless of your talent, then money talks.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to break into DJing today?
Know your music, know your crowd. Go to the clubs an bars and see what party speaks to you, and get to know the people who run it. And please DO NOT take a gig for little or no money. You are short-selling the rest of us, and lowering the bar!
You were on rotation DJing the Love Age Sundays day parties this spring, which just wrapped things up this past weekend. How did it go?
Yes! I was delighted to be a part of the regular rotation this year at Love Age. Shawn Paul Mazur and Matthew Gagnon had asked me to do the premiere back in February, and I was floored. I had worked with those guys last summer for Fly Sundays, and I have to say their parties are always a blast and I have great respect for them.
My music selections get a great response from their crowd. They love pop, dance and house, and go wild for the throwbacks, especially from the 90's, which has become my "signature" style at these parties.
Love Age wrapped up, but not to worry... we are gearing up for the 4th season of Fly Sundays on May 21st! Fly Sundays, I feel, gets bigger and better every season, and we are ready for the biggest season yet. Working with Shawn, Matthew and the whole gang has been such a thrill and I look forward to the summer!
The kids love Fly Sundays at the Monarch! Do you know when your first day is there this season?
I will be the DJ for [there] for May 28th. That's Memorial Day Weekend!
And at a very different venue, you spin the Tyme Machine retro party at Ty's in the West Village monthly.
Yes, and I am proud to say next month our monthly "Tyme Machine" will be celebrating 3 years on Saturday, June 10th!
There is a little back story to how this all came about. When I first came to NYC scoping out places for gigs, by a fluke, POSH Bar was holding a DJ contest "So You Think You Can Spin" back in 2012. I entered the contest and played a 15 minute set, and by luck of the stars the crowd was eating it all up. The contest was supposed to run for a few weeks; they cut it short and granted me a residency on Sundays called "Retro Sundays." That is when I got my first taste of playing retro for the kids and I loved it. It lasted about 8 months. I had to work my day job early on Mondays and the late hours were killing me, so sadly I had to make the decision to leave.
Long story short: I missed my retro nights, and I went to John Steadman who owns Ty's [with the idea of bringing it them there] and he liked the idea. The rest is history.
There’s a lot of great, colorful characters in Ty’s. Bartender Julian is my Bar Crush!
I have made a lot of good friends at Ty's and I love working with Julian. We work so well together, and he makes the night fly by. The crowd can be so much fun, singing along to the disco or 80s classics. I even met one of my idols at Ty's, Elvis Duran, was just hanging out at the bar when I walked in! That was a thrill for me. I have looked up to him for years listening to his morning show on Z-100.
And I understand that you have a new Fire Island Pines gig coming up.
I made my debut in the Summer of 2014 DJ-ing for the pool deck, which was amazing. I met so many great people that summer, DJs and drag queens alike. I am however, making my debut at Sip-N-Twirl on Friday, May 12th, and I am elated!
You have a busy and fun summer to look forward to, Mr. DJ. Final question: what is one thing the world may not know about Brian Richards, but should?
Hmm. Well I must say, as social as I have been all these years, I feel like I am constantly on a journey to find a place to fit in! I think I have come close in recent years, though.
