i am a firm believer of the "mike doesn't fully know he's in love with will because it's all he's ever known in his life" agenda.

the idea that tiny mike held little will's hand at the playground, gave will forehead kisses when he's injured or hurt or feeling down, only let will play with his hair but no one else should dare to touch it, let will fall asleep on his chest. resting on will's shoulder although the other boy is shorter. being mesmerized by will's eyes, his moles, his giddy smile, and the pride in mike’s chest when his stupid joke put that very smile on will's face when no one else laughed. speaking in a language that only they understood.

reading stephen king with their backs behind bookcases while the other normal kids are doing whatever it is that normal kids do and the world spins around them. but mike’s world stops whenever he peaks at will through the pages because mike loves will the most when will is concentrated and absorbed in a story, when will is himself, when will is with just him. so he keeps all of will's random sketches to drawings he’s most proud of and put most concentration in, memorizing every detail of them, saving them in a binder to look back at whenever there's a bad day.

and that's all mike ever knew, that's all he needed to know. he didn't know anything beyond that, and he didn't care to, because nothing else mattered. because back then it was just unbridled childhood innocence. before all the supernatural alternate dimensions and puberty and the real demon that is internalized homophobia came into the equation. back then there wasn't a pile of unsent letters to will signed with "love, mike" hidden in his drawers, no failed attempts to call will more on the phone, no second doubts before showing physical affection, no fear of looking at will for just a little bit too long, no fights about how they're drifting apart, no sleepless nights thinking about everything that happened between them, no hesitations, no pushing away from the very person that he has always loved. back then it was just him and will against the world.
