Ok, the boss is no more! There were some super stressful moments but surprisingly we all survived o:
My animal companion got hit with disintegrate, but we had hero points to make him avoid it. I would cry actually, because disintegrate means no resurrection x_x
The war is prevented! At least this one, because Cayden's party is right at the center of a much bigger one just starting. Today we saved the country. Cayden is trying to not even save the whole world, just maybe slow the whole thing down and save as much people as possible...
#majek says shit#I have the diamond for a raise animal companion spell but it can only be used if you have a body and even then there are restrictions#and Kela wouldn't even know about it until after the fight because she got trapped between a wall of force and a stone golem?#or a stone Big Humanoid Fucker idk what that technically was but it would've killed me pretty fast#and it all was in an area of supernatural darkness emanating from the powergamer's character...#which interfered with so much of everyone else's actions and we even addressed it before the session that it's a bad idea to cast this#but its ok because HE will be able to see through it and HE won't be targeted easily:))))#he also almost ended the encounter in the first round of proper combat...#by using mechanics so outrageous but technically ambiguous enough that our GM can't deny them by using only RAW...#and he prefers to settle arguments by going as RAW as possible...#and it wasn't a problem until now when we have a player who exploits to an actually unbelievable extent#we shared our character sheets online yesterday and I finally saw his... still have no idea how the character works#because like half the stuff is custom and missing from the app#he has 9 AC in the app and allegedly 32 AC before buffs...#and the GM says the math checks out but 1. nobody saw that math besides him and 2. so far he trusted that player without too much questions#and only recently he actually realised he's been manipulated multiple times when me and some others started dismantling that players actions#I so hope this was the last session with that person#the worst thing is I think he's an ok guy when I'm not playing any kind of game with him#and I understand different people find enjoyment in different aspects of games - his being figuring out how far he can go with the rules#and there are whole groups of people who like to play like that and enjoy the challenge of making the most broken “build” possible#but the rest of the group are not that kind of people. maybe some like to have fun with researching what's possible#but it's never the purpose of the game and these things dont find their way into the actual game#I'm actually considering the possibility of just leaving the campaign if he stays there... I know I whine a lot in the tags#about different players that get on my nerves for various reasons. it sounds like I'm never happy about anything#but our group is big and we play together as a friend group in 4 different campaigns now (I'm in 3 of them)#and every one of these smaller groups has it's issues. sometimes it's the characters not matching and sometimes different expectations#or interpersonal stuff that can be worked out. this here is not a group composition issue because the powergaming attitude is everywhere#it's impossible to talk casually between sessions and confronting the guy leads to like actual temper tantrums#literally said “the fuck do I care if the party dies I'm not gonna be useful anymore” after the GM gave him feedback to maybe ease it up#he never says things like that when the gm or me are present but we still get info. he just can't be confronted by the gm like that

Shimon Shelley was an interesting OC in that he was the first one that actually got a backstory that laced into canon. Specifically, they was Doctor Hogback’s longstanding lab assistant, who was disfigured and partially blinded while assisting the not-so-good doctor with the robbery of Victoria Cindry’s body. From there, his path butterflied a bit - in one path, he stuck with Doctor Hogback and ended up later striking up an odd friendship/flirtation with Ryuma and in the other... somehow they managed to encounter Brook and Yorki.
Yeah, I’m still not sure how that happened either and I’m the one that wrote it.
Shimon Shelley was named after Mary Shelley - can’t go wrong with a good old Frankenstein reference, can you? - and styled as a sort of Doctor Frankenstein sort of character, albeit, one that wasn’t so nearly bothered by his work coming to ‘life’.
There were a few odd flashes of inspiration in the earliest versions of the character, such as the fact that I kept switching between his gender presentations and the static charged defibrillator plates in his gloves serving both a combat and practical use for their given profession. There was also a bit of a running gag with his glass eye not being properly fitted and thus falling out at inopportune times - such as when having tea.
Tumblr media
Then there was stuff like me not realizing that Ryuma wasn’t all that big - canonically 5′10″ -and making Shelley almost a full head shorter than the zombie samurai, which ended up putting the good doctor at an incredible 5′4″ at best.
As you might be able to tell from the older drawings, Shelley took a lot of visual cues from Faust VIII from Shaman King with a distinct bit of influence from Frankenweenie. Traditional mad scientist look combined with a sort of lifeless coloring and appearance made for nothing truly groundbreaking, but he wasn’t terrible. Still, 8 years on, he really needed a redesign.
My initial redesign included lengthening out his hair and making it silkier-looking and @fezgician suggested changing his hair from blond to blue. I then decided to lean into the sort of techno-goth/contrast color emo aesthetic I’d admired at the time - 2012 was a bit on the end of that trend, if I remember correctly, but I’d always been a bit slow on trends and the like (the 90′s goth blue lipstick he’s wearing should be a bit of a hint on that one). Adding color to the outfit helped brighten him up a bit - I used the old green while Fezzy suggested the blue - and the patterns I put over his shirt helped give him even more color.
Also the platform boots are still massively entertaining to me.
He might still have the proper lab scientist look in his closet for actual professional reasons, but he’s a lot less uptight in his appearance now.
Skillwise, I tightened up a bit of a loose assumption I made back in the beginning that Shelley’s specialty was in surgery. I added in an aspect of pathology to round out his skillset, but that played well into the ‘handles corpses better than people’ aspect of his personality.
Personality wise... well, there wasn’t a whole lot put to page back in the day but there was enough to give me the skeleton of a personality. He could be affectionate and was certainly loyal - sometimes past the point of self-destruction -, but it was difficult for that trust to be earned - simply reacting poorly to his appearance or making presumptions about his pastimes and professional standards could be enough to close him off - and losing it?
Well.
I’m sure it’ll come up in the story.

A short story draft of my Rogue Soldier au. This is how Gary saved Quinn in space, also reuniting. And I think in this au, I’ll make Quinn’s last name spelled out as Airgon. His au is not cannon anyways. Enjoy!
———
“Gary. I’m receiving a mayday call.” Once H.U.E. said this, he displayed a holographic projection of a malfunctioning escape pod on the main monitor, lights blaring red as the distress call broadcasted in the brig.
“Mayday! Mayday! This is Quinn Airgon! Can anyone hear me? Help me!”
Gary’s eyes widened in shock. It had been a long time, but he would never forget that voice. “Oh, my gosh... it’s Quinn.” It was the same Quinn who he was infatuated for two years ago, and the same Quinn who has been pursuing him ever since he went rough against the Infinity Guard. They ran in to each other several times since then, a few close calls where he was almost captured, but this was the first time in five months.
“My name is Quinn Airgon! I’m a captain of the Infinity Guard who’s been investigating a gravitational disturbance which I now see is a breach in space. Many people are dead, and I’m about to join them if I don’t- Ahhhh! Is there not a single idiot out there who can hear me?”
Gary could hear beeping alarm in the shaky background noise. She sounded scared. Yes, she had been a pain to get rid of, but he wouldn’t wish this on her.
“Should we respond?” H.U.E asked.
“That won’t be necessary,” Avocato said, his facial expression blunt during the whole call. He took the hologram off the display and leaned back on his chair.
“Why not?” Gary turned to his friend quickly, surprised at his heartless answer.
“It’s a bad idea Gary. She’s Infinity Guard. She’s either gonna turn us in or kill us.”
“She’s going to die, Avocato! She’s not one of them.”
“Gary, are you sure we can trust her? What if this turns into a big mistake?”
Gary looked down, knowing a million things could turn for the worst if he saves her. He might end up regretting it, but he would regret letting an innocent person die even more. “Then I guess it’s a mistake I’ll have to fix. Either way, we can’t just sit around and let her die. H.U.E., set course to the coordinates to the pod. It’s time for a rescue.”
“I’ll help too, Gary!” KVN intercepted Gary’s path, getting close to his face.
“Out of my way, KVN!” Gary aggressively shoved the giant ball robot to the side as he gently descended down the elevator.
The pulse engines spun and charged. Soon, then entire ship was engulfed in fast-moving light as it light folded across space. As Gary floated down the elevator into the airlock, the ship was within reach of the escape pod spiraling out of control.
The danger sirens inside the pod were projecting louder as sparks and smoke flew all over Quinn’s face. All controls were failing. Afraid, almost at the break of giving up, she spotted an Infinity Guard ship approaching her. Hope! She didn’t care who it was, somebody actually came to save her!
Gary hooked himself to the cable and lowered the door. Once the hatch fully opened, Gary took several steps back, got a running start and leaped into the could of space, souring straight to the pod.
Quinn slammed her fist on the eject button. As her seat automatically secured her helmet, tightening the air pressure, Quinn was propelled out of her chair just as the pod exploded into flames and debris. The projection shot her straight into the direction of the incoming astronaut.
Gary could see her. He extended his arm as she did hers. At the moment they clasped hands, she accidentally slipped out of grasp. Quinn gasped as she felt her blood go cold, her life lost before her eyes.
In that split second, Gary quickly grabbed the collar of her suit out of reflex. He sighed in relief, his heart almost dropping from what could have ended badly. Quinn got a hold of his arm as the harness wire slowly reeled them back to the ship.
Once inside, Gary had a slightly rough landing as his body crashed into a row of metal barrels like a bowling ball hitting a strike. The hatch closed behind them, making it safe for Quinn to remove her helmet. She took a deep breath, calming down from the near death experience.
Gary looked up at her and for some reason felt astonished, as if he met her for the first time again. Their encounters were never in good terms, but for the first time in two years, she was smiling at him. That genuine, perfect smile he had almost forgotten.
“Nice work,” she commended, giving him a hand.” I need to commandeer your ship. I have a Class 3 emergency.” As she helped him back up to his feet, Gary snapped out of his captivation and realized that she probably didn’t realize who she was talking to.
He removed his helmet and shook her hand, returning the smile. “And you’re looking well.”
Quinn’s face immediately shifted to utter shock a dread “You?!”
Before Gary could say anything, Quinn squeezed his hand tight and twisted his arm, turning Gary around as she physically restrained his arms.
“Ow! Ow! Ow! Hey! You know, a proper ‘thank you’ would‘ve been the appropriate reaction to saving your life. Twice, now.”
“Shut up! By order of the Infinity Guard, you are under arrest.”
Gary grinned. “Arrest me? Really? On MY ship?”
“An Infinity Guard ship that YOU stole!”
As Quinn reached down her back pocket to pull out energy cuffs, Gary took that open opportunity to dislocate his robotic arm. Once the arm was unhinged from the shunt, the limb went limp and loose. With Quinn briefly confused at what just happened, Gary freely spun around to untwist his arm and swim a round-house kick. Quinn blocked the blow and took a step back when he swung his other leg.
She pulled out her gun but before she could pull the trigger, Gary threw his trench coat at her, blocking her view. She shot a few holes at it out of impulse before yanking it out of the air. Gary has already rolled over to his prosthetic arm and relocked it in place. He pulled out his gun and shot Quinn’s gun out of her hand.
The Infinity Guard captain charged at Gary, kicking the gun out of his hand. The two were now engaged in hand-to-hand combat. “Look, I don’t want to fight you,” Gary tried to reason, but got kicked in the face. He fell back with blood running down from his nostrils.
Quinn kicked him again in the stomach, turning him over with Gary on his hands and knees. She stood over him and pinned him down with the gun pressed against his head. “Finally, after all these years I finally-”
In mid-sentences, Avocato karate-chopped her in the neck from behind, knocking her out cold. As she collapsed, Gary sat up and wiped the blood from his nose with the back of his hand. Avocato didn’t say anything. He simply looked down at Gary with an unsurprised expression.
“I think that worked out pretty well,” Gary said.

lets get it!!
-----------------------------------
Living in a dusty desert with scorching weather all year round was definitely not the top of your desired places to live. The summers were like Hell on Earth with sticky thighs and peeling skin if you didn’t apply enough sunscreen. If you thought the winters were better, it was only a couple of degrees lower and instead you were left wishfully thinking of snowy mountains. However, your wonderful college just so happened to border the desert and because most people didn’t want to work in the sandy wasteland, finding a job within the college town was near impossible. Jobs like dog-walking were available but walking every day in the 100° Fahrenheit for three hours was something you would despise. With how much you go out with your friends or not realizing how expensive rent is, you needed to make money because even with your parents donating funds, it still wasn’t enough.
Thankfully, a Motel 6 opened up barely half an hour away from campus and your parents had blessed you with a car just before you left for college. It was awkward trying to become accustomed how proper and prim you had to act since you were just college kid working at the dingy motel for a couple of extra dollars. Even though it was only a part time job, you’ve learned much about the importance of appearances. Wearing a stuffy black, blazer and a white button down every other day has people glancing at you differently and even letting you have coffee on the house at your favorite cafe. Many people thought you were an important business person but in reality, it was a young adult playing dress up.
Another important value your job has taught you was the importance of not judging the guests that walk in during different times of the day, the exact opposite for yourself. You’ve seen truck drivers, couples, business people, and more walk into the small Motel 6. No matter what state they seem to be in, whether it be exhausted, giddy, or anguished, you always smiled politely and asked, “What kind of room would you like to rent and for how long?” The fewer questions asked, the better night it would be.
Working at the Motel 6 has never made you seriously question the safety of your surroundings but has definitely almost made you press the, ‘Call police,’ button under the receptionist’s desk. You’ve seen someone come in with shovel which made you question their intentions until you realized they were a construction worker. After that brief encounter, you’re not worried about the people who walk in.
Until a cool, May night presents you with a boy with ruffled, messy brown hair and a glimmer in his eyes which can only be described as dangerous. When he walked in, you couldn’t help but stare blankly at him. He stands in front of you, rocking back and forth and whistling mindlessly to some popular tune on the radio.
“How may I help you, sir?” You question, quirking an eyebrow at him. He was dressed in a black sleeveless shirt with dirty combat boots. He played with the leather jacket wrapped around his waist, also while displaying his spiky belt. If trouble had a name, it would be his.
“It’s Yangyang. I want your cheapest room for one night.” His accent rings out in the air and you stare at him quietly. There is only one conclusion you’ve come to: a one night stand.
“May I see some form of identification?”
He slides an international driver’s license onto the granite counter and you carefully examine the card. ‘Liu Yangyang’ is the same age as you and seems to be from Germany. You give his license back after typing in the required information within the computer. Asking minor questions, you notice how his eyes glimmer or how he nervously played with a tuft of his hair. Silently giggling to yourself, you acknowledged how adorable he was. He seemed like trouble but that didn’t mean you couldn’t think the bad boy was attractive.
After handing him a key card, you wished him a pleasant night as he went back out the entrance, probably to hit up the bars and bring someone back with him. That thought doesn’t settle well in your stomach and you find yourself pouting because of fate. You wouldn’t have normally cared but this was the first guy you’ve found cute in a while. Shrugging it off, you dismissed the thought. You were just deprived of any romance with juggling a job and school. All your heart and brain wanted was someone to kick back with and the first guy you thought was attractive walked into the motel lobby meant your heart had to jump at the thought.
Yangyang comes back quicker than expected without an escort. Instead, he carries a guitar case, an amp, and a backpack. Wordlessly, you send a prayer up to God and hope that Yangyang isn’t going to be the spawn of Satan and play his guitar at nearly ten o’clock. He waves you a goodbye as he ascends up the elevator, almost dropping the amp in the process. Shyly, you wave back and turn back to your homework that you’ve hidden under the receptionist desk.
An hour passes by and nobody has called the desk or came into the motel. Internally, you’re grateful but your gut tells you that your night isn’t going to be that uneventful. Just as you were finishing up your calculus work, the painful ringing of the desk phone disturbs your relaxed mind. Taking a deep breath, you pick up the phone and with a cheery voice, you speak, “Hello, this is Motel 6’s receptionist desk. How may I help you?” A gruff voice greets you, “Yeah, hello. There’s this annoying ass kid playing the guitar on my floor and I want him to shut the fuck up or I’ll request a refund!” He nearly screams into the phone, making you move the device away from your ear.
“Yes, I will talk to him immediately. Thank you for notifying the desk.” Without waiting for his response, you slam down the phone. You already know who’s causing trouble.
Liu Yangyang.
As you call one of the other receptionists in the break room to cover for you while you deliver a stern talking to the troublesome guest, you notice the phone ring again.
Bracing yourself mentally, you pick up the phone and are immediately greeted with, “Front desk? Yeah, deal with that kid! I can’t sleep and I have an important business meeting tomorrow. I’ll have this entire motel bulldozed before you can even blink!” And the line ends with a buzz.
The clacking of your shoes on the tiles reflect the beating in your heart as you go up to the floor above to encounter the hot topic of the night. As you stare at room ‘116,’ you feel anxiety build up and you realize you’re hyping yourself over nothing. Shaking all feelings away, you quickly rap your knuckles on the dark wooden door.
Yangyang opens the door soon after, sweat covering his forehead, making his hair stick to his neck and he smiles breathlessly at you.
“Hi, what's up?” He asks casually, holding his guitar in one hand and holding the door open with the other hand. With his whole room on display, you noticed how his room seems to be disheveled with garbage thrown everywhere. Pity fills in your chest for the maids tomorrow but you’ve come here with a mission.
“We’ve received a few calls for noise complaints. Would you care to explain the situation?”
Suddenly, it clicks in his head and he attempts to hide the guitar behind his body. “Uh, nope. No clue. I haven’t heard anything.”
Eyes narrowing, you step closer to him and get a whaff of his intoxicating cologne but it doesn’t stop your task at hand.
“Liar. You know exactly what I’m talking about. Keep making noise and we’ll be more than happy to kick you out.” With that, you whip your body around and start stomping off to the elevators once more. You didn’t fail to catch his whisper afterwards as well, “Woah, that was hot.”
Taking your seat at your desk once more, you fan your hands in front of your cheeks as an attempt to calm yourself down. Playing on your phone served as a good distraction as soon it was twelve and your other coworker has come in to take over your shift. “Hi Johnny,” you greet him, writing down notes of things that have happened throughout the night.
He replies back and before he can talk your ear off, you shove him into the breakroom so he can get settled and take over your shift. Just as he comes out of the breakroom, the phone rings once more, almost mocking you. Dread sets in your stomach and you hope it’s someone calling for an extra pillow. Slowly picking up the phone, you say, “Hello, front desk. How may we help you tonight?”
The same gruff voice from just an hour earlier assaults your ear with profanities and something along the lines of, “That stupid fucking boy is making more noise! I can’t stand it! Listen--”
“Yes sir--” You cut him off before abruptly continuing, “We’ll talk to him once more,” you end the call and sit back in your chair, groaning loudly.
Johnny affectionately pats your head. “Just threaten him and then you can go home.”
Home did sound nice after a night like this. Grumbling and hauling your backpack upstairs irritated you immensely. This time, you weren’t going to be so nice to this boy. You thought he got the message originally but clearly not. He wasn’t going to ruin your night anymore. You had no sleep yet and were looking forward to bingeing a new show since you had no class the next day.
Knocking on the door, you braced yourself for a long, insulting speech about his lack of manners and how he would be a lot cuter if he learned some.
The culprit opens the door and brightly grins.
“Oh good! My plan worked! Now you can talk to me but it looks like you’re reprimanding me so nobody will suspect anything!” With that, he grabs your arm and yanks you into the room. You’ll never admit to him once you’re in the room that you liked the feeling of his warmth on your arm.
What were you saying about a deprived love life again?
---------------------
“Liu Yangyang,” you state, licking the vanilla cone he bought you before it begins to drip all over your hand.
“Yes, baby?” He replies, brushing the hair out of your eyes and also taking a lick of his own cone.
“Why were you at the motel that day?”
“Oh, I left my dorm to practice because my roommates were complaining about the noise. The adorable receptionist was a bonus that night.” “You’re so irritating.”
“But you love it.”

blood: a level-by-level breakdown
episode 1: the way of all flesh
the first episode, and the one included in the shareware version. like a lot of shareware episodes, it's generally a sort of mishmash of themes and ideas to provide a reasonable cross section of what a potential buyer could expect from the full game, introducing a small selection of enemies (zombies, the basic cultist and his tommygun counterpart, gargoyles, as well as minor menaces such as rats, the zombie fish, bats and a single grasping hand) as well as about half of the arsenal (up to and including the napalm launcher.) the name is a euphemism (actually a mistranslation from hebrew) for dying.
Tumblr media
E1M1: cradle to grave (james wilson) almost every classic FPS game's first level is iconic and the subject of many remakes in other games. let's face it, there's few things a mapper covets more than the E1M1 slot. so here we are with caleb RISING FROM HIS GRAVE. the level is a cemetary and associated funeral home, rather short compared to the immediate next level, but twisting nicely in on itself. the opening room is surprisingly non-descript, just a simple, small crypt. duke nukem 3D in contrast might have dumped you on a fairly blank rooftop but it was a much more dynamic introduction to the game.
after a short couple of encounters in a cemetary you enter the funeral home proper. the chapel is where you get your first taste of the game's tendency to have enemies ambush you from above. up the stairs, past the organ, and through the mortuary, eventually winding up in a small crypt behind the building that leads to the exit. short and simple, but introducing some of the basics -- combat, enemies, secrets, while also showcasing a bit of the game's blackly morbid humor. by 1997 standards it's a gorgeously realized opener, with excellent use of texturing to create a gloomy, creepy setting to shoot zombies in.
Tumblr media
E1M2: wrong side of the tracks (craig hubbard) this is where the game really starts to pick up. flowing smartly from the first level -- you start in the same spot you ended the last level, only now the way you came in is sealed off -- you start the level working your way down some train tracks; zombies and cultists stand in your way, and they've been offloading barrels with corpses in them, visible through the glass pane in the side (a reference to the classic zombie film "return of the living dead.") eventually you wind your way around to the front of 'miskatonic station' (heh) and it's lousy with tchernobog troops. they're not just gunning for you either, the zombies are swarming the nameless sadsack innocents that the cult has enslaved.
shoot your way through the station to the incoherent sound of announcements over the PA speaker, answer obscene calls on the public phones, check out pickman's bookshop and stop in for a bit at cask of amontillado. some really good moments here, such as the swarm of zombies breaking through the walls in the foreman's office and the bats flying out of the access tunnel leading off the tracks. it's also one of the best examples of the build engine era's attempts at creating realistic, every-day places to shoot things in.
Tumblr media
E1M3: phantom express (james wilson) you've boarded a train and now you have to find a way to get into the engine car. a great opener as the train runs over some hapless folk stuck on the tracks. while the level is literally linear by necessity, it's still a rip-roaring good time as you clear out the cars one by one, culminating in an all-out shootout in the dining car in the back. for 1997 this level was extremely technically impressive; using a conveyor belt effect, they've created the impressive illusion that you're on a fast-moving train across the country. if you fall off, you die, so don't fall off. the conclusion of the level is quite dynamic, as you overload the engine and it explodes, ending the level.
Tumblr media
E1M4: dark carnival (kevin kilstrom with revisions by james wilson) blood's pitch black sense of humor is on full display here. after the train derails you pick your way through the ruins until you reach a dark carnival full of wonders. a ghastly ticket collector sics zombies on you after you jump the line, and more zombies and cultists (and mimes) crowd the carnival from end to end. the midway has games of chance -- a shooting gallery, or the opportunity to field goal some severed heads for a prize. in the big tent is the tightrope over a pit of snakes, the big act of everyone's favorite circus freak, jojo the idiot boy. this is also where you meet your first gargoyles, when the carousel comes to life -- a good scare, there. on the way out, you have your options of where to go, even though the bridge collapsed: take a dive and swim to the exit, or cross the remains of the bridge to the secret level, provided you've found and remember the passcode. also: a delightfully vicious secret duke nukem cameo.
Tumblr media
E1M8: house of horrors (james wilson) in case you weren't done with the carnival theme, E1M8 provides you with the ultimate carnival ride. the opener is pretty great, with a big horrible clown mouth you have to climb through; the walls are fleshy and gross, giving you the sense that maybe this might be more than just a carnival ride... it's an extremely linear affair as the water ride ferries you down a long winding tunnel, complete with ambushes and a few hilariously ineffectual jumpscares. the finale has you jumping out a window into a back lot for a big showdown before finding your way back to the regular ending of E1M4.
Tumblr media
E1M5: hallowed grounds (nick newhard, craig hubbard, terry hamel) a major thematic change, one taking more after doom or quake than the usual "duke nukem for goths" that this game is. on rare occasion (well, half of episode four does it) the game decides music isn't necessary and turns it off for a level. deep, gutteral chanting, wind and thunder are your only soundtrack as you blast your way through a creepy temple. the cult's armies are out in full force here, lurking around every corner and coming at you in packs, with lots of ambushes from above and below. it's a long, winding nightmare that repeatedly loops in on itself. there are a few hints on how to complete the level, and you'd better heed them, because choosing the wrong door at the finale means fiery death. it's all burning torches and glowing candles, making this level a dark, moody affair, and one of the best-looking in the game.
Tumblr media
E1M6: the great temple (terry hamel with revisions by james wilson) the climax of the episode is a big quake-style temple in the mountain, initially a linear affair as you work your way through some caverns up into the temple proper, only to switch back on itself several times. zombies, cultists and gargoyles are absolutely freaking everywhere. the level is highly reminiscent of quake in both layout and aesthetic, though as you near the upper areas and get a good look at just how high up you are it takes on a different vibe. plenty of traps, indiana jones style; plenty of firefights too, the best one being a huge shitshow in a room with a ramp that lines the walls, every inch of it covered in assholes to blow up -- and there's a dual akimbo powerup right there for you to grab.
Tumblr media
E1M7: altar of stone (james wilson) the grand finale is just a simple boss level, though it'd make a good bloodbath level with its round shape, height variations and small dimensions. other than a couple of trash mobs nothing much happens until you step onto the central platform, at which point the biggest enemy you've seen yet, the huge stone gargoyle cheogh, comes after you. he doesn't have much in the way of attacks -- mostly just flies around and shoots electric blasts out of his eyes -- but he takes an enormous amount of punishment, shrugging off even your napalm launcher. upon prevailing, you're treated to a CGI cutscene that's far darker than its goofy early-90s models give it credit for.
final thoughts: for a shareware episode this is a fairly eclectic offering. the cemetary level sets the tone for the rest of the episode, but it's the train station that most ties in with the game's roots as a horror-themed response to duke3D. the train level is a technical marvel by 1997 standards, but it's probably the carnival levels (which are a clear reference to "something wicked this way comes") that give the episode its most iconic images, as carnival themes keep popping up. the back half of the episode with its sprawling temples really drive home the gothic horror vibe that the game goes for, as well as showcasing some of the more creative level design. if you're in 1997 and you're trying to decide if this game is right for you, this grab bag of a shareware episode should give you a good idea of what you're in for.
episode two: even death may die
while E1M1 is iconic, the entirety of episode 2 is equally so. set in the frigid north, with whole-level references to some of the most iconic horror tales ever written ("frankenstein," "the shining,") it's a departure from the first episode in that the theming is consistent throughout. even the haunted house level is surrounded by snow and cold. it also introduces several new enemies: the bloated zombie, the giant fish monsters, spiders, and most notably, the phantasm, a terrifying ghost that's only able to be hurt when it's about to attack you. the arsenal gets filled out a bit as well -- you now can use the special dynamite types as well as the ever-popular aerosol can flamethrower, plus the voodoo doll.
Tumblr media
E2M1: shipwrecked (craig hubbard) the frozen north theme hits you like cold wind in the face, starting you out on a tiny boat heading towards a big wooden ship, locked in the ice (and named the HMS victor, in keeping with the obvious frankenstein ref.) while there's a few treats in the water, most of the level is spent exploring the relatively small ship, moving from fore to aft and back again as you collect keys and open up new rooms. your first encounter with gillbeasts will probably be in the small, flooded room at the fore, a nasty place to meet such a dangerous enemy. the finale is nonsensical, but kinda cool, and a quick swim later you're at the entrance to the next level.
Tumblr media
E2M2: the lumber mill (craig hubbard) a quick little romp around a lumber mill, as the title suggests. mostly a small compound of small buildings, you'll be working your way around and through them, visiting each one in turn and clearing them out. first introduction of "bloated butchers" -- fat zombies with toxic puke and big cleavers that they throw at you. these guys can take a hell of a beating before going down. fun, short little level that exemplifies the exploratory focus a lot of these older FPS games had. good bit of humor to be had by the outhouses.
Tumblr media
E2M3: rest for the wicked (kevin kilstrom and craig hubbard) it took me a long time to figure out what the hell this was supposed to be. essentially it's a prelude to the next level, a small hedge maze and resort complete with pool, hot tub, and the like -- all frozen over, of course. it's very restful with between 43 to 105 enemies running around. the hedge maze makes up most of the first part of the level, before switching over to the resort area, and then looping back around, finally sending you back to the start of the level, where you unlock a gate that leads to the exit. looming in the distance is a big old house, with one light on upstairs, and something in the window watching you...
Tumblr media
E2M4: the overlooked hotel (kevin kilstrom with revisions by craig hubbard) zero points for guessing what this level is a reference to -- especially with that frozen guy in the hedge maze. the hedges aren't all that interesting otherwise, but once you get into the hotel proper the level really opens up, with an extremely non-linear layout for you to explore. not only that, but a series of very obvious secret passages basically connect the entire hotel, making it possible to duck in and out of rooms at will. this is also another example of the game making secret exits require a little bit of thought -- you need to find five tomes hidden around the hotel to unlock a portal. some good scares and creepy moments in this level, mostly based on "the shining," but my favorite is the library, the stacks illuminated by suspended lanterns, except for one in the far back, the chain swinging uselessly, with phantasms lurking in the shadow.
Tumblr media
E2M9: thin ice (james wilson) if you liked the frozen sea from E2M1, you'll like this level, a big twisting network of caverns and cliffs overlooking a frozen lake. not much in the way of civilization here, but plenty of goons to shoot through. not a very visually interesting level, but it's fun to throw a dynamite plunger and watch chunks of ice break off and float to the other side of the lake. towards the end things get treacherous as you have to make some daring jumps from one jagged ice peak to the next.
Tumblr media
E2M5: the haunting (james wilson and kevin kilstrom) while blood is primarily an action game, the developers did not at all forget that this is a loving pastiche of the horror genre, and as such have crafted one of the creepiest levels in the game, and my personal favorite of this episode. a sprawling old manor with a detached guest house, the enemy count is surprisingly low for the most part, allowing for a slow buildup of tension as you first work your way through a creepy hedgemaze, past the guest house (the same house you saw at the end of E2M3 in fact) and eventually into the mansion proper. it's all dark tunnels and cobwebs everywhere, most of the windows boarded up. phantasms lurk about upstairs, you can hear what sounds like hundreds of rats in the walls of the basement, and when you finally access that mysterious guest house...
if there's a level that most exemplifies what a creative mapper can do to scare people with the limited technology of the mid-90s, this is it.
Tumblr media
E2M6: the cold rush (james wilson) after the open-ended nightmare that was E2M5, E2M6's little mining compound nestled in the cliffs is a refreshingly short little jaunt that's somewhat reminiscent of E2M9. at first the camp building (the sole structure) is inaccessible, requiring an extended detour of hopping from ledge to ledge around some perilously steep cliffs, eventually finding the key in a cave, which allows you to access the building proper. lots of gargoyles flying about to irritate you, along with the usual zombie/cultist trash. fun little surprise flamethrower trap when you go to look in a mirror, complete with crawling hands coming out of the walls to choke the life out of you. opening up the locked gate to the mine proper offers a real sense of forboding for such a simple effect -- but we're nearing the end, now.
Tumblr media
E2M7: bowels of the earth (james wilson) the penultimate level of the episode is appropriately epic in scope: a long, mostly linear journey through a dark, seemingly abandoned mine that's already partially collapsed. while abandoned mining equipment has been left lying around here and there, for the most part this is a generally featureless series of tunnels and chambers, though towards the end it starts taking on a more concrete identity with a big underground waterfall as a major setpiece and some long-abandoned temple ruins. trash mobs are everywhere, including a great ambush early on where the tunnel collapses and zombies break out of the walls to surround you. at the end of your journey you're rewarded with what looks like a huge temple, with a swarm of spiders (and a stone gargoyle) crawling out of the darkened entryway. the lair of shial is near...
Tumblr media
E2M8: the lair of shial (james wilson) like E1M7, the final level of the episode is just a small arena, though in this case it's a much more convoluted knot of twisting tunnels and chambers, with a huge spider nest in a small chamber that overlooks the bigger starting room. in that nest is shial, mother of spiders, and your boss for this episode. compared to cheogh she's much easier to deal with -- she moves slower and mostly sends swarms of spiders after you. and unlike cheogh, it's much easier to send her bouncing around with napalm launcher fire, thanks to her much smaller size. once she's been squashed, you're treated to another CGI cutscene, caleb cracking wise with an andrew dice clay reference of all things.
final thoughts: episode 2 is probably my favorite of the four original episodes. it's a gorgeously realized trek through varied settings that fit very well into the far north/winter theme. while craig and kevin's early levels are all great, it's james' later levels where the episode truly shines. hinting at the guest house of E2M5 as far back as E2M3 with two, if not three levels in between, was a great touch, and the way it teases you throughout E2M5 until you finally find the house key adds a little bit of power to a scene that otherwise might have been just another grisly moment in a game full of them.
episode 3: farewell to arms
episode 2 might have been cold and dark, but episode 3, in contrast, is positively explosive. this is probably where the game comes closest to its roots as a horror take on duke nukem 3D. set predominantly in a town somewhere in france, you'll spend a lot of time fighting in and around the streets, working your way through commercial businesses and other things you would expect to find in a small city. the cabal have come for war, and with them they've brought a dangerous new enemy: hellhounds, whose flaming breath can sap your health in seconds. fortunately, you also get to use the tesla cannon for the first time, and it puts them down right quick.
Tumblr media
E3M1: ghost town (james wilson) right off the bat you know this isn't the typical blood level. you're dumped unceremoniously in a small section of the city, with a number of the shirtless innocents running away from you in the distance. tall buildings surround you, and the streets seem clear of cabal. this all changes once you start poking around in buildings, as cultists and zombies start coming out of the woodwork and stuff starts blowing up. in true duke3D style, after surviving a shootout in a small office room, you get to watch from the window as the building across the street is reduced to rubble in an impressive explosion. the biggest challenge, however, is clearing the hotel lobby, which is just lousy with armed cultists, who've put up couches as barricades. if you're savvy and quick, a reflecting shots powerup will make this encounter a breeze. some other neat moments are the elevator that collapses with a super secret at the top of the shaft if you can climb to it, and the secret room modeled after the sloth murder scene from the film se7en, complete with air fresheners.
Tumblr media
E3M2: the seige (craig hubbard with additional work by terry hamel) craig hubbard has pulled out all the stops for what's one of the most creative and brilliant levels ever devised. judging by the development notes, craig really enjoyed himself with this level, and it shows. right off the bat you get to watch as literal actual airplanes bomb the streets below (using some cool design tricks to make it look good,) followed by room-to-room fighting, shooting your way through the city as air raid sirens scream non-stop and explosions and gunfire ring out in the distance. it's a brilliant piece of work, atmospheric as hell and fitting right in with blood's overall theme as caleb's all-out war on the cabal escalates into full-scale mayhem. probably my single favorite level in the whole game.
Tumblr media
E3M3: raw sewage (james wilson) obligatory sewer level. seems like almost every early FPS game had to have one, going at least as far back as doom 2's second level in 1994. in any case, this is a fairly linear but twisting shootout through a rather modern sewer system. the usual trash mobs are here, including plenty of zombies, but little in the way of higher-level enemies save a few bloated butchers and a poorly placed mother spider. not a lot to really write home about, though some neat build engine tricks like opening the machine that protects the eye key provide some nice visuals to an otherwise non-descript series of tunnels.
Tumblr media
E3M4: the sick ward (craig hubbard and james wilson) probably the very first use of a hospital in an FPS game (or second, if you count system shock's medical deck) and it continues with episode 3's rip-roaring urban warfare setting. it's a sprawling, thoroughly modern (and anachronistic) medical facility, filled with the usual goons and ghouls for you to gun down. most encounters aren't too tough, though a surprise pair of hellhounds can catch you off guard as you round a corner. some good laughs with the "assisted suicide ward" being a torture room and some good creepy moments with zombies rising from their beds to come after you, among others. eagle-eyed players (or just anyone who played duke nukem 3D) can spot the button in the chapel that opens up the secret exit. all in all, a solid, well-rounded level that offers a decent challenge and takes a setting that's already kind of creepy and ramps it up.
Tumblr media
E3M8: catacombs (james wilson and craig hubbard) normally you would expect a secret level to have some kind of gimmick or whatever, but unfortunately E3M8 offers very little of interest save for a few cool encounters (mostly tons of zombies crowding some of the back corridors, and a prominently-placed guns akimbo powerup to mow them down with.) it doesn't even really look like much of a catacomb, just a series of poorly-lit, underground corridors filled with enemies to mow down. feeling more like a doom level, it's the kind of abstract nowhere that games like duke 3D were intended to move away from with their focus on realism. a fairly weak outing, all the more annoying that it's a secret level. the end has some neat rotating sector tricks to lead into the far more industrial E3M5.
Tumblr media
E3M5: spare parts (james wilson and craig hubbard) and now for something completely different. wilson and hubbard have crafted a convincing industrial nightmare here, some sort of foundry perhaps -- it's hard to tell as it seems to be generally a series of big rooms full of molten material, and most of your time will be spent traversing the catwalks and side passages surrounding it. good use of textures enforces a consistent theme, and there's a subtle style to the architectural detailing that makes it more than just a series of boxes. some fun encounters here, especially the security scanner which detects you as an intruder and first sets flamethrowers on you, then some zombies.
Tumblr media
E3M6: monster bait (james wilson and terry hamel) continuing in the industrial theme of E3M5 we have a sprawling dam complex reminiscent of duke 3D's water treatment plant level. it's a little anachronistic, but it works within the context of the episode. like E3M3 and E3M5 it's a mostly linear affair with you blasting your way through a horde of trash mobs (including a ton of cultists) and the occasional hellhound or butcher. the turbine room isn't the most intense encounter, but it's certainly the most visually arresting. though you do get a cool vista from the dam.
Tumblr media
E3M7: the pit of cerberus (james wilson and craig hubbard) it's fitting that an episode so focused on fire and explosions should end in an underground temple crumbling under lava flows. it's a bit less interesting, design-wise, than shial's lair; first you have to find four switches to start the battle against cerberus, who announces his arrival with cool collapsing walls and explosions. cerby is dangerous when his AI works, spitting fireballs at you that do incredible damage (and set you on fire.) when he gets stuck on architecture is when he's most vulnerable. other than that, it's a pretty straightforward fight, especially since he's relatively slow, so it's easy to lure him down one of the side paths for a breather.
final thoughts: episode three is, if nothing else, a showcase for the build engine. all kinds of little tricks are at work here to give the episode its look and feel; take a look at how the airstrike in E3M2 works sometime. while it's a bit more varied in its theming -- moving from urban warfare to industrial carnage, with a decidedly out-of-place secret level -- it's still a generally coherent trip, moving away from the grotesqueries of the first episode and the frigid nightmares of the second towards a modernist city setting. with a little creativity one could run with this theme for some interesting horror-noir stuff, but the all-out action we get for this outing is perfectly fine too.
episode 4: dead reckoning
the final episode of the original retail version, "dead reckoning" is like episode 1 in that it's a bit of a grab bag of themes, feeling overall like where the leftover levels and dregs of the design team's ideas went. the first half is a weird mix of mad science and a few whole-level references to classic slasher flicks, only to switch to a hellish setting out of doom for the back half. the hellstaff makes its appearance at last in this episode, proving itself a devastating top-tier weapon.
Tumblr media
E4M1: butchery loves company (james wilson) starting episode 4 off right with a classic frankenstein-style mad scientist's castle. based on development notes this was one of the very earliest maps to be created, and it shows, as it's very small and doesn't really come up to the standards of, say, E2M5. at best we can see a few sights like what might be frankenstein's main lab, brain storage (no zombies allowed), a ritual and/or book club meeting in the front hall, and a lot of timing-based secrets that reveal themselves without the player even trying. despite its short length, you'll have to manage your ammo carefully, as the level is a bit stingy with weaponry while throwing a few high-level enemies at you like hellhounds. eventually you find your way into a back room and the exit, all too soon.
Tumblr media
E4M2: breeding grounds (james wilson, craig hubbard, terry hamel) but wait! there's more! apparently not satisfied with the tiny mad scientist level, wilson et al. went on to create a much larger level that, thanks to the level transition, is very clearly part of the castle proper, despite its much more modern look. oriented around a pair of huge flooded fish tanks full of angry gillbeasts and bone eels, the level is a mostly linear affair that loops in on itself, with locked gates and doors eventually being reached from the other side. it's a visually striking level at times, with scenes such as the curved observation hallway with a view into the big round tank, or the forboding gate to the spider habitat that you must clear. combat is a steady drip with occasional hellhound encounters as well as a mother spider and stone gargoyle to block your way.
Tumblr media
E4M3: charnel house (craig hubbard and james wilson) of course, if you're running an evil mad scientist lab and you're going through a lot of bodies you're going to need a place to deal with the leftover cadavers, right? the actual corpse-disposal facility is but a small part of the overall level, and much of your time is spent blasting your way through the tunnels and corridors of an aqueduct system the charnel house sits atop. fairly low-key for the most part, save for a few intense moments where gillbeasts come after you when you're in the water, though there is a moment where part of the map is repopulated by a troop of zombies. a decent little maze but nothing to write home about.
Tumblr media
E4M4: crystal lake (kevin kilstrom and james wilson) ki ki ki ma ma ma
i mean, what else do you want me to say about an obvious friday the 13th reference? you can even find jason's mask and knife in a barn. in any case, this is one of those build-cute type levels that's mostly a series of tunnels and corridors where all the walls are plastered with a forest texture to give the impression that you're in an actual forest, punctuated by a disjointed collection of buildings to give the impression of camp grounds. it's largely very linear, your path through the woods eventually terminating at an outhouse, beneath which is a flooded tunnel that leads to the exit as well as to the infamous crystal lake, which is home to a school of gillbeasts. the lake itself has very little to distinguish itself from any big water-filled hole, though there's a hellstaff on a raft if you need it. also, though the secret exits of the first two episodes required a little thinking to work out, in this case they don't even make you look for a button. you basically have to know exactly what wall to blow up, because the classic cracked-wall sprite that indicates a destructable wall is almost invisible against the cave texture it's on, and the chamber is dark anyway. it's worth it, though...
Tumblr media
E4M9: mall of the dead (craig hubbard) craig's solo act returns for a level that's easily as memorable as E3M2, if only for that goofy-ass mall music. no prize for guessing what movie *this* is based on... though there's curiously not as many zombies as you'd expect. it's not super huge, but there's some good encounters (including a twofer stone gargoyle bout in the fountain room) and there's a few laughs with the store names. a sudden swarm of zombies as you turn a corner reminds you of this level's inspiration, and to escape the mall you climb up onto the roof. it's anachronistic, but who cares?
Tumblr media
E4M5: fire and brimstone (james wilson) the back half of the episode begins in earnest with james wilson offering a taste of hell in this jarring thematic departure from the early levels. (there's a possibility the regular ending of E4M4 naturally leads to this level, but it's not the cleanest transition.) essentially a big volcanic pit honeycombed by cavern tunnels and ancient ruins, your path winds through the caves, hopping over lava flows, through the upper rooms of a central tower and finally on to an underground temple of sorts. pretty steady drip of combat, though lots of hellhounds and an inordinate amount of gargoyles to blow up. not a long level, nor particularly intense, but thematically stands out a bit from the other ancient ruins of evil this game features.
Tumblr media
E4M6: the ganglion depths (james wilson and terry hamel) while it's not the penultimate level before the final boss, it very much feels like one, reminiscent of E1M6 with its mostly linear traversal, high-above-the-clouds setting and sinister ancient ruins set into steep cliffs. lots of tough encounters here, including several spider mommas (notably a twofer in a tomb) and a nasty fight right at the start with gargoyles (including a stone one) and some goons with only a bridge and some ledges to fight on. lots of generic evil chambers as sinister chanting fills the air, but some creative encounters and setpieces help salvage what's largely a lot of narrow corridors.
Tumblr media
E4M7: in the flesh (craig hubbard and james wilson) the penultimate level is by far the weirdest one, thematically. no ancient temples, no crumbling cities. just a huge cavern of flesh, filled with the sound of slow breathing. a shockingly low enemy count for the final non-boss level, but devoid of the usual trash mobs, instead throwing gargoyles and gillbeasts and hellhounds at you. a few distinct areas evoke actual internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, and, amusingly enough, the stomach. combat is either trivial or a pain, the latter especially when dealing with the stone gargoyle in the stomach area.
Tumblr media
E4M8: the hall of the epiphany (kevin kilstrom) the game's finale, and the place you've been trying to get back to since E1M1. after a brief cutscene, you're treated to a tiny map that opens up in sections as you first have to fight another stone gargoyle, another mother spider, and another cerberus, in order, before finally confronting tchernobog himself. the battle is not as straightforward as you'd expect; aside from a hitscan attack that sets you on fire, he also shoots out devastating fireballs akin to a cyberdemon rocket in doom. it's largely down to who kills who first, though utilizing the high-level weaponry such as the hellstaff will help. a bit of a disappointing fight altogether.
final thoughts: for what's essentially the finale of the game, episode four is dissapointingly the weakest part of the game. while the final few levels have a coherent theme and transition among them, the first half feels like the design team had too many ideas they really wanted to put into the game and had nowhere else to put them. it's not to say they're bad, but E4M1 especially feels like a wasted opportunity and probably deserved to have been cut, or at the very least merged with E4M2. the mall level is truly great, though. the final boss was also disappointing, with a poorly-designed arena making matters worse. as a whole it's simply not as memorable as the rest of the game.

GM Notes
10/12/18
Game starts the morning after.
Gill gathers up the party at breakfast time and offers a job as delivery guys to the town about 2 weeks away called Croz.
Croz is a swampy village with not a lot of traffic, but enough to get by on trade. However, his friend the innkeeper named Orlen needs some supplies and last they wrote each other something strange had been going on in the village. A stranger moved in outside the village and strange events, like missing pets and strange weather has been happening. Could even be a cult, Gill offers.
The party, very much interested, agrees to leave later that day. Giving everyone enough time to pack and buy rations and any other supplies they might need.
Gill gives the party a wagon and a pulling mule to transport the supplies. Gill begs that his favorite donkey is not eaten by the giant lizard who is drooling right now.
Zephyr offers a stern word to Ryn and off they travel. After a proper introduction of Minnow, Zephyr’s charge, they move along the road. Peaceful as the country is, 5 events occurred between travelling and bonding games.
On the 3rd day of travel, Art and Kress spotted a white deer crossing the road with a strange entanglement in his horns.  After much time, and bad rolls, the deer let’s Art investigate the deer, making sure that the entanglement is not harmful. After concluding that the golden chains and gems tangled in its horns is merely from a grove of elves or dryads or even fairies and pixies, he steps back, letting the pure white deer go, without any harm to either party. Mean while, Caleb, who has never seen a deer and Zephyr, who is sure deers aren’t supposed to be white, are judged by Minnow, who has seen plenty of deers in her life.
On the 5th day of travel, a traveler is seen resting under a tree looking at a map. Zephyr the good paladin he is offers his aid of the area. On closer inspections, the man resting under the tree is an avariel, a winged elf from the fourth realm. He does not need help with directions, but he is looking for someone. All of the party, but Art, comes to listen to the avariel. At this point the avariel introduces himself as Tyrael Qillmaer, and is looking for another avariel who has gone missing. Tyrael describes the missing boy. Tyrael doesn’t give out the name he is looking for, but just tells them that the boy he is looking for will know his name and what it will be if Tyrael is looking for him.  The party moves on, leaving Tyrael with well wishes and good luck. After a good bit of distance and night fall, the party stops to ask Art why he didn’t come out to talk to the avariel. It is revealed that Art is the avariel that is being looked for. His true name is Artemis. Kress is offended that he lied to her, since she asked if he was Artemis when they first met. She doesn’t know how much she can now trust Artemis for lying so easily about something so important. Zephyr and Caleb don’t understand the reason, well not like Artemis gives one either, but as long as Artemis is not a wanted criminal than it is okay. Kress flies off to sulk for the night. Artemis recast Disguise Self, since he now knows he is really being looked for. He doesn’t know when it will be safe to walk as himself.
On the 7th day of travel, while resting under a tree, Minnow is climbing the entanglement of branches and roots, and almost falls. In her pause to right herself again she finds a scroll case. She slowly makes her way down again and hands off the scroll case to Zephyr. He inspects it and finds a faded rune. He ask Artemis what it is. It is a rune that merely protects whatever is inside from getting ruined by water or rain. A common rune on most magical cases. With a bit of elbow grease, Zephyr pops open the case and rolls out the scroll. It is a spell scroll for Silent Image. Artemis can copy the spell and offers the scroll to anyone else that might want it, it eventually is given back to Minnow, since she did find it. This brings up the first scroll found, Fire Bolt. Artemis can’t use it and eventually it is given to Caleb, who has not offensive spells.
On the 9th day of travel, the party comes across an older woman painting the view of her house. She greets them politely and the party greets her back. She invites them for lunch, since she doesn’t get visitors very often. It is learned very quickly that is use to be a paladin of Sune, the goddess of love, passion, and art. Caleb is unsure of her, and Zephyr very much was like, same hat! Kinda. Inside her house was everything art related and her old weapons and armor. She was probably very good at her job. Lunch is served and cake is also offered. Artemis realizes first that no one has exchanged introductions. The old woman laughs, recount that she is just as bad as asking for names when she first started adventuring. Nia Shung, is the name she gives. The rest of the party introduces themselves, and they stay around for a good bit, exchanging tales and talking to the older woman. She wishes the well and safe and beautiful travels before they leave.
On the 12th day of travel, the party encounter a stranger who had caught a fairy. When he revealed to them he was planning to sell it, the party did not like that one bit. Zephyr tried his best, but…
Surprise Round!
The bandits get the jump, Kress, Caleb, and Artemis take damage, and Kress gets final shot.
The group turn to the fairy in the jar, who is very angry and stress and talking very fast in Sylvan. After she gets all her anger out of her system, she thanks the group. Caleb is worried about a hurt wing and offers healing, which she declines and ask for water. She is a plant fairy and just needs water to regrow her wing.
After a few moments of soaking in water, her wing grows back. As thanks for not selling her, she gives Artemis a very tiny bag of fairy dust that will help things grow. She wishes the group well, and buzzes off, seemingly to her home.
Late on the 14th day of travel, the party arrives at Croz, a small swampy village.
LEVEL UP
Party is now level 2.
The game ends here.
Likes: Cool fight finisher Artemis reveal Fun combat (Good Side Villain) Freed the fairy Party is able to show off Strengths and Weaknesses
Dislikes: Caleb doesn’t have armor and is trying to get killed Gaming not at home

A very kobold candle nights
a large band of kobolds have been burrowing under the town of tavistock for almost a full year now. approaching the town the party will find a small group of towns folk who managed to escape “the kobolds were just all of a sudden everywhere!! then jumped out of barrels, floorboards and sacks of flour it was horrible!” they cry.  the townsfolk implore you to help rid the town of kobolds, theres a small band of men and women assembling at the northern edge of town they plan on storming the streets
if the party allies with the band in storming the streets they find that the kobolds were prepared for such an assault they roll hay carts into the streets lighting them ablaze cutting off the exit the kobolds are lined on the roof firing bows and lobbing heavy rocks and furniture into the band the band scatters into buildings where the real fun begins
the first house they enter is obviously kobold infested but all the kobolds are in the kitchen. if the party is silent they can avoid alerting the kobolds. if the party sneaks up on the kobolds they can see one  with his head stuck in a mixing bowl full of dough, another is eating a turkey right out of an open oven that’s still burning another one is playing with a set of kitchen knives throwing them at a bulls eye hes painted on the door in blood. combat ensues feel free to use the environment to dispatch the kobolds easily.
the streets aren’t safe kobolds prowl them in groups of 8-9 looking for anyone who has escaped the ambush on the main road. if the party encounters one of these groups the kobolds call for reinforcements and soon kobolds come swarming onto the streets luckily they can escape down an alley and into a toy store.
unfortunately the toystore is also infested (go figure) here is a kobold on a baseball pitching machine at the end of one isle that seems all to happy to aim for the head, there’s another kobold hiding amongst the stuffed animals that jumps out attacks and hides again taking an attack of opportunity everytime it does so but its a quick bugger so watch out
the next building the party goes into is a bank. the kobolds have rigged a large cage that falls from the ceiling and traps the party instantly. kobolds swarm the cage climbing on top of it and stabbing at the party with spears and firing crossbows into the cage.  have the party roll initiative (attacking the kobolds is pointless if one is killed another takes its place instead encourage them to escape the cage) at the end of the round the kobolds make an attack on every person inside the cage separately. when the party is free of the cage the kobolds flee if the party searches the bank they can find gold and a dog hiding behind one of the teller stalls. animal companion time? whose to say?
next the party finds the guard tower where there are no kobolds but there are a few of the fighters from the band that have also survived the ambush they say that there’s a rendezvous point at the tavern but  that its too far to travel on foot with kobolds prowling the streets. one of the guards has an idea, they can use one of the city guard wagons! with the whole party they could keep the kobolds from swarming the wagon and killing them all.
when he party makes a break for the wagon they attract the attention of kobolds a large wave of them streams after the party nipping at their heels as they board the wagon. 6  kobolds manage to hang on its up to the party to get them off before they disable the wagon by attacking the wheels. as the party turns onto a street they are blinded by lights of a larger vehicle a snowplow sounds its horn and revs its engine the snowplow is covered in kobolds  it burns rubber as it chases down the party’s wagon eventually the snowplow catches up to the wagon kobolds leap from the snowplow to the party wagon(most of them dont make it but the party has to deal with the successful boarders) as you turn down a side street in an attempt to shake your pursuer the snowplow hits the partys wagon which sends it into a spin it crashes into a building and flips and crashes spectacularly! the party regains consciousness in a beer garden amid the smoking wreckage of their wagon. one of the party members is trapped under the wrecked wagon, the party better hurry and free them because the snowplow that was chasing them crashes the fence and starts closing in. the party has got three rounds to free the party member before the snowplow destroys the wreckage killing whoevers inside (sorry not sorry) the party is now trapped by the snowplow they can only escape into the building they are being pressed up against but the only door in or out is locked the party has 5 rounds to get throughthe door before they are crushed by the snowplow and killed (really not sorry this time)
Hooray! the party finds themselves in the tavern the guards said was the rendezvous the party is in a back room surrounded by kegs and various tavern supplies the guards peek out into the tavern proper but oh shit whattup its chock full of kobolds! the little trash dragons are everywhere throwing bottles, smoking cigars, theres a card game going on in the back corner where one kobold  is stabbing another for cheating. half of the kobolds are singing kobold songs waving thier tankards in the air. there are even kobolds hanging from the rafters there’s a barmaid the kobolds are harrassing her and making her bring them drinks! she finds the party in the back room she tells them that if they can get her out of here shell burn down the tavern with all the kobolds trapped inside she grabs an axe  the party must protect her while she smashes a couple barrels of firetongue brandy then the party must escape as the barmaiden drops a lantern igniting the bar in a huge fireball
as soon as the party exits into the street they meet up with what remains of the band of townsfolk that fought to take back their town more than half of them are dead the rest all have some pretty serious wounds from the vicious kobold invaders. together the band quickly dispatches the rest of the kobolds that were not burned in the tavern the band of townsfolk is happy to have won back their town they are grateful to the party for their help and they hobble together a meager candle nights feast theres not much alcohol but theres plenty of roasted kobold
happy candlenights everyone
go ahead and plug in all your own dc’s and # of kobolds etc this is just a couple guidelines for a fun oneshot i like to do for different groups! if you didnt notice, ‘a very kobold candle nights’ is a complete and unrepentant rip off of the movie ‘gremlins’. what is even sweeter is that kobolds are basically re skinned gremlins complete with sunlight sensitivity and a flare for causing chaos and making traps etc.  so it all comes full circle

Adimyos, Land of Greenery and Giants
Guess who got really thirsty for big musclechubs and royalty and fantasy world stuff and wrote something so they could do something about it? There have definitely been some very similar ideas, but they didn’t quite hit on what I wanted, so I’m doing the thing and making my first proper wg story in forever. Basically, fantasy world where most of a certain population of people are b i g.  But I don’t mean like, building size big.  I mean like 6-10 feet and T h i c c.   This is also on Google Docs if you don’t feel like reading it on Tumblr (which is utter crap for looking at longer posts imo)
For hundreds of years, people had known of a southern kingdom with a lovely balance of sun and rainfall, and some of the most excellent tracts of arable land known.  Things grew freely all year round, becoming bigger and more richly flavored and nutritious than they would nearly anywhere else. The kingdom of Adimyos was a rich and prosperous island of impressive size… But sometimes, it could be a bit too rich for its own good.
The fertile lands of heavy rain had been that way for so long that they supported huge, terrifying beasts.  Dragons, monsters, and beings of great power roamed throughout the land, always finding plenty to fuel their immense power and great numbers.  For all history, Adimyos had been plagued with more attacks from savage beasts than anywhere else.
When plant growth peaked in the wettest parts of the year, it could be difficult to keep cities and settlements from being reclaimed or becoming unsightly.  Weeds and vines could set in with alarming speed, along with wild pests and beasts looking for easier meals.  If it wasn’t the larger animals, it’d be hordes of mice and thick swarms of ravenous ants, wasps, and flies. The seas around Adimyos were similarly chock full of fish and all manner of other sea creatures and monsters, which both helped and hindered the great kingdom.  Fishing in the ocean was typically a high-risk, high-reward ordeal.  However, it also made it deceptively difficult to invade the island nation.  Krakens, man-eating whales, and immense sea serpents were only a few problems that unprepared invaders were forced to face. Still, the island of Adimyos was impressively large, even on par with some larger mainland countries. With so much to offer, there were myriads of tales about its exotic meats, fine pelts, excellents spices, fabulous precious metals, and amazing lumber, so the natural roadblocks present couldn’t deter outsiders forever, as they became more resourceful and advanced. Along with attacks from monsters, the natives of Adimyos still had no choice but to fend off attacks from outsiders as well… And these particular needs combined with the abundance of food were some of the biggest reasons for the well-known appearance of the typical Adimyosian. With the fertile southern climate, their hair and skin tended towards darker colors.  With thousands and thousands of years of abundant nutrients and wide food options, having almost never known widespread famine, they were on average some of the tallest people in the world.  To cope with the numerous predators and territorial beasts of their homeland, they had strong bodies and thick bones… especially the men. It was not at all uncommon for Adimyosian men to easily surpass seven feet in height, with the women only inches behind.  Besides height, their sheer mass was impressive as well.  Adimyosian men were famous for being barrel-chested, with thick, burly arms, powerful shoulders, and tree-trunk thighs… and often, no matter how hard they worked their fields or how much they went hunting, their abdomens would sport a soft, healthy gut with a modest wobble and overhang to it.  Nearly just as often, one could see that their backside was large, round, and thick as well, jiggling with fat and muscle as they walked or ran. In Adimyos, gluttony had never been known as a sin… in fact, it was often praised and rewarded.  And that could be seen by how the chunky, burly seven foot and up men of most of Adimyos… were merely the average, sometimes even below average ones.  Stories existed around the world of those who were above average, put in positions of greater wealth, power, and royalty… Although in Adimyos, even being poor wasn’t exactly bad, just not as glamorous as other positions. Even before the times of human invasion, Adimyosian people greatly valued their size and strength in order to hunt and defend themselves against the many savage beasts of Adimyos… and as such, men best filling the criteria were the ones who continually encountered the greatest success and sired the most children.  So, over many generations, the rich and powerful of Adimyos continued to grow in all ways.  They became stronger, taller, and fatter than ever.  Whenever it seemed they could get no bigger, they would somehow manage to push a bit further.  Because of all these men who made up the military and nobility, Adimyos became known as a land of greenery and giants.  Those men could easily stand at eight feet tall or more, and were known to be significantly wider, stronger, and heftier than even normal Adimyosians. Biggest of all were the men of the royal family of Adimyos, especially the king.  As someone who managed the astonishing feat of growing to well past nine feet tall, the king of Adimyos was the largest and heaviest human in the world.  He’d sired multiple children, including four sons.  The three older sons were already following in their father’s footsteps...  But the youngest was something of a late bloomer.
At just two months past eighteen, Prince Tanos was overall a very pleasant young man to look at.  He had long, free-flowing, wavy black hair and a calm, soothing gaze with golden-brown eyes.  His skin was deep tan with a soft, clear complexion, and his features were strong and yet rather delicate, at least compared to pretty much any other men he’d seen in Adimyos.  He was told he was lean, but that was really only from an Adimyosian perspective.  He still possessed the kind of powerful chest and thick arms that men from the mainlands across the ocean would need years to develop. And yet, he was “only”, “embarassingly”, a “mere” six feet tall and 240 pounds, at least when the actual measurement systems of Adimyos were converted.  With so much of his weight being contributed by muscle, his stomach was no more than a mild pot belly over what would be impressive abdominal muscles… at least, to anyone who wasn’t from Adimyos. His brothers were the exact opposite.  The eldest, 24-year-old Masu, was literally over seven times his weight at nearly 1,800 pounds… However, it was a bit tricky to get his true weight, given that he almost always had no less than a couple dozen pounds of food in his stomach.  After a grand feast, there could even be a couple hundred pounds packed inside.   The moment Masu woke up, he would be eating a massive first breakfast in bed before heading to the kitchen to have his main breakfast with the family, as if he hadn’t eaten at all.   Ironically, Adimyosian metabolisms were actually some of the most active and impressive, having developed in response to their active lifestyles of hunting, combat, farming, and gathering, along with how easily they built muscle and rapidly processed nutrients.  There was simply no need for a slow metabolism when food was always so abundant.  However, Adimyosians always ended up massive anyway, thanks to their unmatchable appetites.  An Adimyosian’s stomach was renowned for its unbelievable flexibility and astounding strength, assisted by an almost equally fantastic liver and set of kidneys.  There were many toxins that only an Adimyosian could digest and detoxify, and they could hold their liquor like no one else. So, even though Masu could easily take in a couple hundred thousand calories a day if he had the chance, he had “only” been growing by about 200 pounds a year for the past couple of years.  He’d been growing faster when he was younger, which was why he held hope that his “tiny” brother Tanos would soon hit a massive growth spurt. Masu already had many suitors and great fame merely for being the eldest prince, and it was incredibly easy to see why.  Just like his father, Masu was a nine foot tall behemoth of a man.  He was incredibly wide and powerful, but remarkably handsome. His face had remained strong, square, and angular before Masu finally grew so fat that it simply had to start softening, but this was only regarded as an improvement.  He kept his thick black hair in a long ponytail, largely because that would keep it out of the way while he gorged himself.  Even his soulful brown eyes were said to be beautiful and full of intense charisma and wisdom… if they weren’t locked on to Masu’s next meal.  Like many Adimyosian men, especially those in high positions, Masu typically wore light, loose, flowing clothes that intentionally showed off his proudest areas.  Those areas were his enormous arms, which possessed incredibly firm muscle just below a generous layer of fat, and his billowing stomach.  A far greater spectacle than his arms, his stomach jutted out far in front of him and hung to his knees even first thing in the morning.  It was hardly hairy at all, but it had myriads of wide, dark stretchmarks on display, treated as a sign of great beauty and hard work.  The massive, nigh-bottomless gut was always the first thing Tanos would see of his enormous brother… And usually, he already heard the thundering footsteps or monstrous belches well before seeing him.  Masu’s lower body was also far from small, massive hips and thighs and a wobbling shelf of an ass providing balance to the colossal gut, although it was still so obscenely large and heavy they couldn’t really compete. Despite it all, Masu was actually an incredibly calm and laid-back sort, putting most of his passion into his love of food.  He didn’t even particularly like to hunt or do nearly as much hard labor as his younger siblings, and it was clear that the herculean muscle beneath his fat was really just from generations and generations of ideal Adimyosian genes. In general, despite the seemingly barbaric love of hunting, the ancient traditions of beast taming, and the extreme admiration for larger, stronger figures, Adimyos was actually a deceptively peaceful and progressive land.  In spite of its size, the entire island had been peacefully unified for over a thousand years, with only relatively minor strife breaking out from time to time.  Despite wars with invaders from the mainlands, Adimyos had only ever acted in self-defense.  Never even once had they planned to strike back for revenge, or even simply for pre-emptive discouragement of further invasions.  But that didn’t mean they were anything to be trifled with or taken advantage of.  They’d started up trade and alliances with a few nations that swallowed their pride, apologized, and declared truces, but never even once had any other nation managed to establish a colony or dissuade most of them from their major religion.  Some outsiders were allowed to come live in Adimyos, and were even allowed to do so without having to fully conform with the beliefs and culture of Adimyos, but they had to prove themselves worthy, and agree that they would never disrespect or threaten the culture of Adimyos. For these reasons, Tanos felt deep pride and affection for his country, his people, and his family. For all his life, “tiny” Tanos had wished he could be more like Masu, or his father, or his other two brothers, or even most other men he saw in his life… Although Tanos didn’t know it, he would get his wish very soon....

Let the rain wash it all away
Kvennesviga - Skålevik - Norway - Saturday 12:00 pm
The sky was still relatively clear when a deafening explosion made me near jump out of my skin. Agent Brager had a small jump in his seat but kept his cool, hands firm on the steer wheel, foot on the pedal, everything under control. Sven slipped an arm around me and pulled me to him, not giving a damn that we were in fact in the back of a patrol vehicle, and not a taxi, and just about as I was signing the oh so beneficial “let’s not burst straight out of my chest” peace treaty with my heart, the skies opened as if the conglomerate of currently available, and ready to take your queries, gods, all decided to flush some heavenly toilets in some sort of Olympic synchronized grandiose spectacle, letting the Holy Mother of all downpours descend upon us like a wondrous cataclysmic waterfall. All of a sudden, the windshield was a beautiful liquid curtain, in the very literal sense of the poetic expression, a moving 3-D special effect in the absolute practicality. Agent Brager quickly put the wipers to maximum capacity but the poor mechanics were  barely delivering a second of clarity per stroke.
Time seemed to have almost stopped and trapped us in some sort of odd intemporality, captured in the heavy, furious, raindrops clapping hard against the roof, their thick isolating liquid veil blinding us from all sides, the wipers struggling against the flooded windshield. On one front, I could literally feel Agent Brager behind the wheel, tense, on edge. On the  complete opposite end of the spectrum, on the backseat, Sven, his arm around me, was about the human manifestation of a warm snug blanket and pillow in which i was gladly sinking in. I vaguely wondered at which point I adopted his nonchalant perspective on our situation and stopped caring that we were in a patrol vehicle and not a cab.
“Home sweet home!” Agent Brager declared joyously from the driver’s seat.
I pulled away from Sven, instantly missing his warmth. The rain had lost about a whooping ten to twenty percent of it’s original intensity, still roaring proudly, still a deluge. I looked at the water curtain on the back passenger' window and hugged my purse tight to myself. I had left the house in my turtle neck alone, Sven had grabbed a light jacket coat at the last moment, and we were now equally soaked; me hugging my small bohemian purse in a vain attempt to protect my deck of cards and my passport from the wet beast from the skies, Sven struggling a little with the key and lock.
“At least the rain washed the blood off.” He smiled back at me, holding the door open.
I shyly stepped in, minimizing the dripping zone as much as possible.
“Come, come, you’ll catch death if you stand there!” And again a gentle arm behind my shoulders invited me to step in.
I awkwardly stepped in the space between the kitchen and the living room and stood in a very concise spot, dripping away in an Illy puddle.
Sven rushed back with a blanket and stopped in front of me. Yes, a blanket would keep me warm but, the underlying problem was still very undeniably wet and cold against my skin, making me tremble from shivers.
“Would you like to take a warmth bath?”
I nodded.
“Can you check in my purse if my deck is okay?” I asked after Sven filled the bathtub with near boiling hot water to my request. “And my passport.” Because, accessorily, my passport was also important, but my cards, they were special to me.
He nodded and left me to my bath.
From one water to another - from freezing cold downpour to a burning hot comforting bath. From one man to another - from cold and distant King of Swords, to a warm and welcoming King of Cups. From the unbearable stress of being on the same social media at the same moment to the -
To the soft knock on the door.
“I brought you clothes.”
“You can come in, Sven.”
“Are you sure?”
“Mmhm.”
I had my eyes closed but I imagined him carefully putting down a small pile of clothes on the closed lid of the toilet, stopping, surprised, maybe a little unease - was my nakedness too soon? - one more step, kneeling down by the tub. I felt hot water been squeezed out of a sponge hit and run down my shoulder. A simple gesture filled with care and tenderness. The soft caress of the sponge on my neck and under my chin, plunging in the water to pick up some more to be soon squeezed out on the my opposite shoulder.
“I’m sorry for all of this mess.” He apologized, a little tired. “I never meant to drag you in this mess.”
“Then, what good do I serve in your life, if I can’t take any of the load off your shoulders?” I asked, and I wondered if we weren’t going too fast, too deep.
“Your cards are alright” I felt his finger on my cheek “they are dry.”
Dry. Wet. Water.
Water. We are constituted from 70% of water, we need water to continue living, I mean, sure oxygen is the biggest non-negotiable dependable element to our operational state of being, but water was unquestionably the second most important. Water soothes. Water heals. Water cleans and cleanses. The sound of water relaxes - rain, ocean, bath water’s gentle tingle and dripple.
“How do you say water in Norwegian?”
He soaked the sponge and squeezed it out on the back of my neck.
“Vann”
One last run.
“I’ll let you finish up.”
“Thanks for everything, Sven.”
“It’s nothing.”
My heart melted when I saw that the clothes he was lending me were his own. A black hoodie cut in the shape of t-shirt with white sleeves and the mention “cult leader” on the chest, a pair of dark grey sweatpants with a cord to adjust the waist, and a nondescript pair of new, clean, pair of undies. Aww! Thank you Sven! For a second I thought of sporting only the panties and hoodie and go down like that but it could be too much. Too much, too fast. My mind ran in the hypothetical alternate reality and my heart raced a little. His hand slipping under the hoodie, freeing me from the whooping five minutes it had been in service. My tongue swirling around his. Would it be long, slow strokes or would be caught by fire and rushing it a little? A hand was bound to rid me of the undies, a finger or two would soon press against Satan’s doorbell… Unless it had another appellation when someone else maneuvered the rosebud?
I drained the bath water, trying to cool my thoughts. It would be a mistake…
You mean another one on your extensive list of?
You’ll have to agree he’d be one hell of a hot mistake though.
We are trying to heal from the last one. Snap out of it!
I pulled my tongue at my other self in my head. Party pooper!
Was I that desperate or that weak? Now, this is a question to be dissected later on, with a proper cooled down head, back at the B&B. Apparently, it was suggested that rape victims get back into the swing of things and have sexual experiences fairly shortly after their traumatic encounter, but was that method samely valid for broken hearts?
I dried my hands and went down to find Sven sitting on the floor of the living room, like we were on our first morning, cards laid out on the coffee table before him. He picked up one, studied the illustration and put it back, carefully, with the upmost respect, as if some ancient, unknown, powerful fairy would suddenly jump out straight at his jugular.
“They don’t bite, you know.”
He looked up, caught red handed. Why was he so goddamn adorable and charming and… Sven, you weren’t meant to… Oh, wait, I never had the power to decide how others would make me feel by simply existing and tumbling in my life.
Space was tight but I snuck in between the table and him, sitting between his legs. Is the message clear enough, Sir? I was happy, though, that he couldn’t see my flushing face because my attitude was causing a serious cheek burn!
“What were you asking them?” I asked, leaning back against him, making myself comfortable.
Right on cue, his arm comfortably rounded itself around me, blessing my prosperous attitude with the answer I was hoping for.
“The first row, I asked if a girl I been seeing recently, has any mutually shared interest and feelings.”
Ace of Wands, Ace of Cups, Lovers.
“How is said girl?”
“Hard to pinpoint.” He kissed the back of my head. “Only known her for the past three days.”
I snort giggled. Well, then, the cards have spoken and blatantly betrayed me.
“The Ace of Wands can be a young passionate person, a lovable rogue, they like action and are fiery. Could be an astrological sign ruled by fire. They like action, travels, diversified experiences, expanding knowledge, philosophy.”
“I am fairly certain she likes to travel, yes. Sadly don’t know her astrological sign nor if she likes philosophy.”
I swallowed my saliva as discreetly as I could and combated stress induced stiffness.
“She’s a Leo and she loves poking the mind’s terra incognita.”
Sven dropped a kiss behind my ear.
“Favorite intellectual or philosopher?”
Cornered.
“I don’t really know. I often drop Nietzsche’s name but it’s mainly because of that one nugget of gold he had left us.”
“Det som ikke dreper oss, gjør oss sterkere.”
“I’ll have to trust you on that.” I picked up the Ace of Cups. “New romance, new feelings, elation, a sense of conquering the world. Heart is overflowing with bounty, happiness. And the Lovers is the nail nailing the coffin shut. Especially in a love and romance reading, it’s one of the best omens you could hope for.”
Second row had the King of Cups surrounded by the five of cups to the left, the past, and the eight of wands to the right, the future.
“What was your question here?”
“How does she - you - perceive me?”
“You are the king of Cups" I started.
“Do I feel that old to you?” He cut me off, picking up the card where a long, shaggy, silver white haired king held a cup and looked at the horizon.
The king of Cups had one of those very strong, thin, sharp, conquering style noses that added even more severity to his already serious face where forehead wrinkles accentuated the sharp attentive eyes under which tired eye bags were added, as if the crows’s feet weren’t enough to show the long lived tiredness of the King. He wasn’t per se frowning, but he wasn’t smiling either.
Among the Court carts, in the Dark Mansion Tarot deck, the King of Cups was undeniably the eldest king, as if Emotions were the first kingdom from which the fire of the wands, the mental stealth of the swords and the earthly bounties of the pentacles all flowed from. The original fountain of eternal life, the core essence of all human matters : emotions.
“An emotionally mature man” I reprised, like a teacher subtly scolding a misbehaving pupil, “who is in full control of their emotions. He, the King of Cups, is calm and caring, diplomatic, affectionate, romantic, charming. You are surrounded by grief, and sadness, mourning, a heart break, but that is in your past; the Five of Cups. Ahead of you, or what you may be hoping for, you want to move away from the pain and hurt, is the Eight of Wands; movement, action, being swept off your feet, infatuation, strong positive forward energies.”
Next row had the Six of Cups framed by the the three of Swords to the left and the queen of Pentacles to the right.
“You miss your previous life with your wife and daughter. You were happy and fulfilled. You can’t quite stop reminiscing about the past, it brings you comfort but also heartache.”
“I didn’t tell you what my question was.”
But the sadness in his voice, even though subtle, was loud and clear enough. A muted cry of despair, silenced by his own strength.
“What was your question?” I whispered solemnly, as if I was talking with the dead.
He let his head rest on my shoulder.
“I don’t need to repeat it, you and the cards can see through all too well.”
“What happened with your wife?” I wanted to regret my question but i didn’t find it in me to do so.
“She was bored.” A whisper, a cry out to who wanted to hear his side. “I had accustomed her to fancy parties and cocktails, varnishes and somewhat big shots, celebrities. I groomed a monster.”
I didn’t move and fought myself violently to not drop judgmental bombs.
“I’m a sculptor, an artist.” He thought good to give me context. “You known how those things go, you must have seen some in movies. It’s exactly like that; fancy gowns and dresses, tailored suits, expensive jewelry, whispered secrets, enough compliments to drunken Satan himself, luxury left, right and center, connections. So and So is the proprietor of this or that estate in the mountains or near a lake, would love to have us over for brunch and discuss a custom piece. And it’s a beautiful illusion that hides unforgiving, merciless sharp teeth.”
I could just about taste and swallow the sour regret, the sharp burn as I was hearing out his long held truth.
“She had made herself a diamond river necklace of wealthy influential friends. And soon enough I was relegated to the influence the shadow of my name had to open even more influential doors. She wanted a bigger house to show off our wealth and prestige. A loft or a condominium in the capital. I didn’t share her views. I wanted our daughter to grow up in a healthy environment, rocked by the sounds of the ocean, eat healthy foods, be grounded.”
He sighed.
“Enough rambling of things long gone and past.”
“I guess, but, I have learned that keeping stuff inside is not exactly efficient or helpful.” I nudged and awaited his contratempo, realizing I been holding things back myself.
“Like you not fully letting your pain out to be examined and healed.”
What did I say!
“We have nothing in common.” I mumbled. “He’s secretive, not much of his personal life is out there to be looked at. I, on the other hand, I am too open, apparently I open my soul and heart. He speaks with his voice, I speak with the silence of my written words.”
Can you get any less… I dunno, vague?
Yeah, sure! Gimme a sec.
“Oh and he’s a YouTuber and I’m a fan, so, already there, it starts off all sorts of wrong.”
“Why?” He asked, dumbfounded as if it otherwise wouldn’t have any substantial impact.
“Because it has the same dynamic as a regular fan has for a celebrity, with all the potential” I waved and rolled my hand “the potential to ... You know how it can be. The only thing I demand and require from any man who has sparked fires in my heart is help in my sleeping process and inspiration for my writing.”
He hugged me tight and dropped a few more kisses on my neck. Sven, I swear, if you continue like that, we’ll be, sooner than later, end very naked and very entangled on the floor… And I’m not entirely against the potential of that, to be completely honest.
The very last row had five cards spread out and I wondered why or what had been happened in his thought process.
“What was your last question and why five cards?”
A hand finally snuck under the hoodie. I thought he’d never have the nerve to, but he remained a perfect gentleman, only gently brushing my side.
“What do the cards tell, overall?” He whispered in my ear and the warmth of his breath made me wish I was under some heavy duvet with him. I wanted his skin, his damp breath, his energy, his warmth against me, in me.
Is this a trick question?
The Devil was surrounded by The Fool at the far left extremity, then the Knight of Wands and the Hierophant to the far right and the Emperor right next to it.
“Well, what ever you asked, it’s… Very mixed.” I interpreted the overall theme, not wanting to project my own desires in the cards.
“The central card, the Devil is about addiction, seduction, superficiality, sexuality, taboo practices. It’s a very material, physical card. It’s usually the lower instincts of mankind. The Fool, on the far far left is about new beginnings, taking a leap of faith, being open minded to new things, an innocent view on the world, he’s just ready to experience the Grand Everything without fear or tainted thoughts.” I loved the fool, he was the innocence the world has lost. “Give me a clue, Sven. Is this card representing the past? A person?”
“Not the past.” He picked up the Fool. “Maybe the girl - or an aspect of the girl - who this reading concerns.“
"So then, let’s say that the left of the Devil is me, and cards to the right of the Devil is you.”
“Let me guess, left, the feminine, right the masculine.”
I nodded.
“Would it make sense?” His warm breath in my ear caressed my senses, sparking electric discharges.
“Yes. The emperor is a mature, family man, he likes structure and he’s protective, he likes stability." I showed him the card in question, another long bearded crowned figure, expecting, awaiting a snazzy comment that didn’t come. “And you see this Hierophant, he stands for traditional values, conventional and conform ideas and practices, whereas the Knight of Wands is hasty, adventurous, rebellious, daring, a bit of a hot head who likes to make their own beaten dirt paths.
I looked over at the cards, not convinced, not sold.
“You sure you don’t want to tell me what your question was?” I asked pouting a little, hoping to pull some emotional strings.
“Ja."
I wanted to pull my tongue at him, but I wasn’t physically in a position where it would advantage my desired intention. I shuffled the cards, asking what he had asked about, what his intentions were, but the cards only offered conspiratory giggles back at me. The moon and Temperance.
“I asked what you meant, in that last question, but the Cards seemed to have sided with you.” I pouted. “The moon is something hidden and Temperance is patience and balance, a chemistry of opposing forces, alchemy, in sorts.”
Hm.... that should bring an interesting light, eventually when inspiration and insight would hit and tingle my brain. I sighed and gently started assembling my crew to put them away in their box.
“What ate your plans for this afternoon?” He asked holding me tight to him.
“I don’t know… Wait for the rain to calm down and head home.” I was also starting to feel a little hungry. “Unless you have a better offer.”
“You are already home.” He corrected. “And we could upgrade our position for the sofa. Netflix and chill, as you younglings say.”

Story time #1- Final Fantasy & Me
At the time of this writing, the people following this sad little blog will all know me from the Final Fantasy XV community. For my first story session, I’ve decided to recount my history with the series and touch on what each game meant to me in the order that I played them. I’ll try to keep it as brief as possible, and restrict it to only the main games in the series, but I can rant for hours.
Note: I utterly failed at keeping this brief, I should have known better than to even try. To keep myself from writing a full novel in one post I’ve decided to split the story into parts. Below is the intro and memories from 7,8 and 9.
                                                  Part One
A Fangirl In The Making:
I’ve been into video games since the age of about 5 when my dad would regularly challenge me to competitive rounds of Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES. In the beginning I stuck mostly to NES, Gameboy, and N64 until Christmas of 02′ when all my begging and pouting finally came through and I was gifted with a PlayStation 2 and enough cash to purchase one game of my choice.
Oh how my parents would come to regret this decision.
The game I bought two days later was Kingdom Hearts. I’ll save my thoughts on that series for another time, but hands down this game can be pinpointed as one that permanently changed my life. What part of it changed my life? The journal, of all things. Prior to KH, I had no idea the Final Fantasy series even existed so when I encountered the Kingdom Hearts versions of FF characters, I initially started internally complaining because they were all so interesting and the game did almost nothing with them.
Then I went back about mid-way through the game and read every character entry in the journal, and was met with two obsession worthy revelations. One: All these characters were also in other games, as part of the same series no less, and two: you could make them dance by choosing to view their full models and rotating the joystick around in circles (I am very easily amused, and doing this actually spawned my first work of Fanfiction).
“So, you mean to tell me that this weird dude with gravity defying hair, one random- mostly useless-wing, and giant sword that must weigh about three times as much as he does when naked and soaking wet who won’t stop emo rambling about Darkness is in another game and I can find out more??? Sign me the fuck up!”
The Gateway Drug:
Immediately after finishing Kingdom Hearts, I took myself down to a local mall where my go-to all encompassing general entertainment store was located. While browsing the shelves for anything that caught my eye, I saw a ‘Greatest Hits’ copy of Final Fantasy VII innocently sitting there, waiting patiently for the right person to walk by so it could take them willingly down the elevator into fandom hell. I didn’t just ride that elevator, I dove headfirst down the shaft.
I shit you not, when I saw that game there I picked it up like a baby and fell to my knees, hugging it to my chest. The video games were located near the cashier counter at the front of the store, and one of the employees who had been eyeing me suspiciously since I walked in started laughing like crazy, jokingly asking if I was OK. I was still dazed and euphoric, and also completely oblivious to the fact that I was causing a bit of scene in the store. The front was plate glass, and everyone walking by also saw and a few people were starting to look concerned. Now a bit embarrassed, I sheepishly walked to the counter and set the game down. After causing a commotion I couldn’t just not buy that game now- as if I would’ve left without it anyway. The guy at the counter was still laughing as he served me. Our exchange went as follows:
“I take it you found what you were looking for”
“Dude, you have no idea”
“You won’t be disappointed. Just, a pro-tip, when you get to the part with the water and the snake, don’t waste too much time trying to fight it, get a Chocobo instead. Also, avoid the things that look like houses in sector 6, they’ll kick your ass.”
I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, but I filed the information away, paid my 14.95 (Ah, 2003), and walked out of the store cradling the bag like someone was going to steal it from me. When I got home later I tacked the receipt on my wall to immortalize the day forever. I eventually ended up losing it (a story for another time) but I still remember the date. 05/26/03.
I loaded the game and was immediately in awe ( “It’s three discs? No wonder the case is so freaking huge!”). The opening cinematic had me from the first note of the theme, and I remember laughing SO HARD when Cloud flipped off the train and suddenly everyone was a Lego character. It took an embarrassing amount of time for me figure out how to advance the text because it was set to use the circle button for confirm instead of ‘x’, and even longer to figure out how to move because I didn’t realize you actually had to use the D-pad.
Control struggles aside, I was so enraptured by the game I didn’t stop playing that first night until the Sector 7 plate fell and yeah, those damn houses did kick my ass. When I finally got out of Midgar about two days later (I spent an excessive amount of time in the Shinra building and on the Motorcycle mini-game), I couldn’t believe that everything I just did was basically the game’s intro, and that there was still so much more to explore.
I have so many fond memories of VII that  it would be almost impossible to write them all down. Down the road it ended up pretty far from my favorite game in the series, but as the first it will always hold a special place.
You’re Hooked Now Honey, Strap In:
Between the mixed obsession of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VII, video games quickly became one of the only things I talked about. I had thought I was obsessed before, but this took it to a whole new level of crazy. I started writing weird crack outtake reels from the games in the middle of classes, and would post little screen caps and fanart over literally everything I owned.
One day, I had out my handy outtake notebook during a bit of downtime in Honor Band (yeah, I’m a geek to the extreme), and one of my fellow trombonist’s decided it would be a jolly time to snatch the notebook out of my hands, run away with it and, start ripping the pages out and throwing them around the band room. Fortunately I had some pretty awesome friends, and they not only helped me to secure the notebook but also helped recover the missing pages. After class that day, a boy who played the trumpet shyly walked over to me and handed me back one of the pages that was still missing. He was obviously very nervous, and after handing the page back and accepting my very relieved and excited  ‘thanks dude!’ (I admit to not knowing his name at the time) he stood there awkwardly while I put away my instrument like he had something else to say but didn’t know how. I gave him a questioning look after noticing he hadn’t walked out yet and as I picked up my bag he followed after me into the hall. After a little while he finally fell into step beside me and asked, “so, you like Final Fantasy huh?”
I don’t care how long I’ve known you, if you ask me about Final Fantasy you better be prepared to a.) Become my new best friend and b.) let me talk your ear off about for as long as you’re willing to sit and listen. I talked with my new friend until we had to part ways for different classes, and then later at lunch when he asked to join me and continue the conversation. I tell this story because a few months later, this same boy bought me a copy of Final Fantasy VIII and asked me to be his girlfriend. A damn diamond wouldn’t have worked better.
Final Fantasy VIII was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Once again I was already hooked by the game’s opening, and the cinematic introductions of all the characters gave it an unexpected charm right from the start. That game eventually got very, very, veeeery, strange and I eventually stopped trying to make any sort of sense of the plot line and just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
That is, until I got to the end of disk 3. I found myself horribly stuck on the battle with Adle where she has Rinoa captured. No matter how many times I tried it, I would get her down to the final phase and she would either Ultima wipe the party or Rinoa would die. I gave up on the game for a while, sick of the frustration, until I came across a Prima Strategy Guide for it while browsing a used bookstore. I normally refuse to touch any sort of guide book until after I’ve already been through the game once on my own, but I figured it wouldn’t be much harm since I was already more or less at what I thought was the end of the game (I was wrong). In flipping through the guide, I not only learned how to beat the boss, but discovered I had been playing the entire game using the combat system completely wrong.
Somehow, I had managed to get that far in the game using only the Guardian Forces given to you at the start of the game and 2 others that you can encounter in the overworld and without stocking up on magic at all. To those familiar with VIII’s train-wreck of a combat system, you know that pairing GF’s and magic together directly effect a character’s stats- and no matter how leveled the characters are,if you don’t have the right combos of magic you have more or less no hope at most of the harder sections of the game.
So, now I had the boss strategy, but still would have been unable to beat it because I didn’t have the magic required (the strategy was to cast Regen on Rinoa to ensure she stays alive). In the end I bought the guide, scrapped the file I had been playing on and started over from scratch, this time doing all the sidequests and such in the proper order. When I got to that boss again I wiped the floor with her, and was rewarded with the game getting even weirder.
I still look back to the ending of FFVIII as one of my favorite ‘Ok WTF Just happened?!?!?!?!’ moments in media. Usually I piece together crazy stories pretty well, but even though I came to enjoy the game, I can’t say with any real confidence that I understand it at all.
Forever Touched:
There was a pause in Final Fantasy games after I finished VIII at the start of ‘04. It wasn’t until almost a year later that I received IX as a Christmas gift. I had been passing on it because I was confused and unimpressed with the cover art, but now that I wasn’t the one paying for it I was willing to give it a chance. I held off starting until New Years, because my parents were letting me have a few friends over and I wanted to have the new experience surrounded for the first time with people just as obsessed with the series as I was. Even though it didn’t have a fancy opening, it wasn’t hard to fall in love with that game. I knew from the first few lines of dialog that my heart was gone, lost forever to endearing charm of that world and it’s characters.
My friends and I were up all night with it. We had so much fun naming the characters and reading the text out loud ("Princess! It is I! The noble Betty!”).Then we all got so upset when Blank got petrified in the forest that we had to stop for the night. Right from the start, that game hit so hard in the feels.
IX became not only my favorite game in the series, but my favorite game in general. There is so much emotion, charm, and soul in that game, and it touches on so many issues that hit so close to home that I tear up just thinking about it, Back in May of this year there was a mental health awareness speed run marathon fundraiser called RPG limit break  being held on Twitch.TV, and Final Fantasy IX was the closing game. I couldn’t think of any better way to spend about nine hours in the middle of the night than to re-live the best moments of my favorite game sitting on a couch with my best friend.
Seeing everyone in the audience tearing up at crucial sections; the Black Mage Village, You Are Not Alone, the ending- made me feel less like an idiot for getting all emotional myself and my friend got to laugh at me freaking out over my favorite game cut-scene ever (The one where Alexander protects the city from Bahamut). When the game was over, the marathon had raised enough money for the runners to stand up and sing the ending theme of the game as a filled donation incentive. When the time came, not only the runners, but everyone in the room stood up to sing along. Melodies of Life, the ending theme, holds a very special place in my heart. Seeing all those people singing along, likely feeling similar things, turned me into a pathetic ball of mush. My friend laughed with me as I sang along with more tears than I think I’ve ever cried streaming down my face, and then I cried again when everyone went around saying their ‘thank yous’ to the people volunteering for the marathon and stood in lines to give each other hugs.
It was one of the most touching moments of my life; and this game was at it’s center.
Phew. Well I failed pretty hard at keeping that brief. Looks like this will end up as a series of sorts.  Tune in next time for adventures with Final Fantasy 6/3, X, X-2, and XII

Stowaway (Final Effect)
One of the less glamorous jobs performed by the Imperial marines was to identify and intercept vessels carrying illegal cargo into Imperial space. For the most part, that meant smugglers who dealt in drugs, weapons, and protected species. This particular smuggler vessel had tried to make it into Imperial space undetected by using cobbled-together stealth technology and its own hyperdrive.
Alas, they had not counted on the Empire’s advanced sensors that were designed to monitor both regular space and hyperspace.
Shortly after entering Imperial space, the vessel was intercepted by an Imperial frigate. A barrage of dimension-locking torpedoes forced the vessel back into real space and temporarily disabled their ability to activate their hyperdrive. Any thoughts of combat were swiftly put to rest after a dozen small missiles, each carrying an Imperial marine rammed through the vessel’s hull and unleashed their deadly cargo.
After the first marine hacked his way through a blast door with a plasma sabre, it took a little less than ten seconds for the vessel’s crew to surrender.
Trent made his way toward the cargo hold of the vessel. If the smugglers were telling the truth, he should find dozens of cages with protected species in them. They were even supposed to be carrying more than two dozen kohlanthi. His jaw clenched. He’d grown up on an agriculture world, and some of his fondest memories were of afternoons spent playing with the kohlanthi. The lemur-like creatures all possessed a Semblance that helped plants grow, which made them extremely valuable when it came to farming.
The Empire made extensive use of the kohlanthi, and it was standard practice for all large farming communities to have at least a few colonies of the creatures to help their crops grow. However, there were also strict laws in place to ensure that the kohlanthi received proper care. In the town where Trent had grown up, the kohlanthi’s colonies had been guarded and protected by the community, and the little critters had been treated like beloved pets. They were generally welcome to hang around people, and their inquisitive nature meant they often spent time around children, following them around and participating in their games. Most farmers even made a point of leaving treats and toys out where the kohlanthi could find them. Happy and content kohlanthi resulted in far better crops.
The fate of kohlanthi sold illegal was generally far less pleasant. He’d seen places where the kohlanthi had been locked up in tiny cages, which were hung from posts in the middle of fields. They had been miserable, and cut off from a proper colony and appropriate food and interaction, they hadn’t lasted long. He’d been only too happy to bring in the people responsible. It was just a pity they’d surrendered, so he’d been forced to hand them over to the courts. At least, they’d gotten lengthy jail terms.
As he opened the doors that led into the hold, Trent forced himself to focus. This could be a trap. And even if it wasn’t, there might be dangerous species on board. Smugglers had a tendency to be careless when it came to things like that. He’d come across quite a few vessels over the years where the crew had been slaughtered by some vicious creature that they were being paid handsomely to transport. Of course, money wasn’t much good to dead people.
Through the enhanced vision of his visor, he could easily make out the cages that filled the hold. The scanners and systems built into his power armour catalogued the species as he laid eyes on them. The kohlanthi were near the back. There were thirty of them crammed into cages that were far too small. He stopped in front of them.
“Easy there,” he said quietly. “We’ll get you out of those cages once we’ve secured the ship -”
He stopped as a rustle came from somewhere behind him. He turned, switching from his rifle to his plasma sabre. He put the weapon on stun, reducing its heat and turning it into more of a glorified club, before he crept forward, his armour’s sensors sweeping the area.
There was an Aura signature nearby, well concealed but definitely there. It was fairly large too, much larger than anything he’d encountered in the hold so far. He was also picking up faint traces of Dust and other materials that suggested an advanced weapon, most likely a sniper rifle of some kind…
There was a blur of motion -
And Trent moved to intercept it. He caught a flash of red and spun, twisting to grab whoever - or whatever - it was. A blade swept out - was that a scythe? - and he brought his sabre up to intercept the blow. The weapon almost buckled, which was insane because a plasma sabre was designed to stand up to anything, even plasma-disruptive weaponry, for at least a few seconds to give its user time to switch to another weapon. He upped the power on the sabre and shoved his opponent back.
There was a flash of red light, and his opponent vanished. He spun, anticipating the next attack, and managed to hit his opponent out of the air as they reappeared behind him. His eyes widened slightly at the flash of Aura his opponent emitted to take the edge off the blow. Then he was forced to jerk his sabre up to block a sniper round that was packing enough force to seriously dent the shields built into his armour.
This was bad.
Growling, he lunged forward again. His opponent vanished once more, but he was ready this time. His armour screamed a warning, and without turning, he drove one arm up and back to slam his elbow into his opponent’s gut. They crumpled and hit the roof from the force of the blow, and he had his sabre inches from their throat when they hit the ground.
“Do not move,” Trent growled. “Do not move.”
It was only then that he got a closer look at his opponent. Teenage girl. Dark hair. Silver eyes. Red cloak. Oh, and if that wasn’t bad enough, she was wearing an ornamental white rose broach that his visors informed him was made of Glyph-forged, Aura-conducting crystal.
Oh crap.
Only one family wore broaches like that. Indeed only one family could make broaches like that. And the intricate writing on the petals of the rose informed him that this wasn’t just any member of that family either.
This girl was a member of the House of Schnee. More than that, she was closely related to the President of the Alliance. Indeed, the writing on the rose indicated she was closely related enough to be in the line of succession.
“Sir,” Trent contacted his superior immediately. “I’ve got a situation down here.”
Her Imperial Majesty Averia VII rubbed her temple. “So… you mean to tell me that not only did we somehow managed to find Weiss IX’s missing younger sister but we also found her hiding in the cargo hold of a smuggler vessel?”
The expression on Minister of Defence’s face said it all. “Yes, Your Imperial Majesty. That is correct. I’ve already instructed our forces in the area to see her brought to Arendelle Prime with a full escort.”
“Good. If something happens to her…” Averia made a face. “How did she even end up on that smuggler vessel?”
“Ms Schnee has so far declined to explain, and our forces are hardly able to interrogate her.”
“Yes, unless we want to start a war.” Averia mentally reviewed what she knew of the Schnee in question. Winter Schnee was fifteen years old and one of Weiss’s younger siblings. Unlike Weiss who had the pale features and hair of the Schnee family, Winter resembled the Rose family, with the same dark hair and silver eyes as Ruby Rose of Remnant. From what the marine who’d encountered her had said, she most likely shared a similar Semblance too. “I will inform Weiss personally. Make sure that nothing happens to her. Once Winter arrives, have chambers prepared for her in one of the guest areas. Post Imperial Guards to make sure she doesn’t sneak off again.”
As the minister left to carry out her orders and go about his other business, Averia shook her head. It was only Monday morning, and she was already dealing with stuff like this. She was not looking forward to calling Weiss.

Season One: Puzzles, Villains, and Poor, Poor Alber (and also Jarvilli)
What do you mean you haven’t read the plot so far? I used gifs and everything.
Spoiler alert; I’m writing this like 92% because I want to show off my brilliance as a DM and 8% because Dots told me she wanted to know what our plot was like so this is heavily edited and in no real coherent order. So. Good luck.
The Puzzle
Really the only relevant bit here is those weird pieces they kept picking up at each stop on the map. As it turns out  each piece was actually one of a set of tangrams.
Tumblr media
Everyone they’ve met with so far (including the dwarf, Alber, poor guy - more on him later) has been dropping hints that their Arch Nemesis the Evil Planner of this Weird Mind Game Thing is nuts. And very evil. So they roll up to his house and surprise surprise, not only is it a gloomy-ass day and he apparently lives in a mini castle, but he’s got a cool tower and oh yeah the whole thing is built on an ancient burial ground.
Tumblr media
So they scope out the tower first like any rational human being would, and find among other things an interesting scrap of paper.
Thus bolstered by the act of surrender, the flow of battle at last ebbed. Having kept tabs on the seashore it was no surprise to hear that the low tide had laid bare the bodies of the slain, now made rich and stinking by the bright sun.
Weird, right? But easily forgettable.
They move on and start scoping out the house/castle. They break in the back, snoop into the first room, and there’s Evil Villain’s mother snoozing in a chair. They try to talk to her, villain himself shows up.
Now Vodal was an interesting one for me. Bottom line is he sold his soul to a deity in return for “eternal life” via vampirism (I share this only because they figured it out already) and enough power to keep around some minions, including the dead, possessed body of his mother, who was killed in a war on those very grounds about 700 years ago.
Mirasha got to wrestle with the concept of what it means to be an orc, as Vodal’s conversation at her was about reclaiming the glory days of the orcs (he’s an orc himself).
Eirlys got faced with the concept of having someone you could count on to always be there for you - especially since they’re not gonna die of old age.
It game them both something to chew on but I had to laugh when Eirlys eventually decided to sacred flame him ;D
Tumblr media
So they start fucking him up, mom gets involved, they end up chopping off a good chunk of his health and he books it for his lair. They barricade mom in the parlor and are faced with the grand puzzle of the hallway.
Remember those tangram pieces they’d been getting for 13 sessions? Oh yeah.
Tumblr media
Turns out under the hall rug was a set of floor tiles that their gold pieces just so happened to fit in. And that scrap of paper from the tower? Each bolded word was an anagram for a particular animal on the floor; solve them in exactly the right order and the tiles cascaded down into a staircase shape, letting them into the tunnel under the house. How long they took on it determined how much health Vodal got to recoup in the process.
It’s simple on the surface and didn’t go exactly to plan, but I still like the concept of this puzzle. Next time I need more hints and less handholding though, that was a mistake on my part as DM. Live and learn!
Vodal
I’m also pretty happy with Vodal. I homebrewed him by combining the orc spellcaster with a toned down vampire and got this weird mash of brute force and possession/summoning combat. His focus for the second part of the encounter was pretty simple; get to the alter at the back of his lair and start summoning. He had to preform 5 rounds of successful attempts to request help from his deity...but without chickening out. (Wisdom saves abounded).
Tumblr media
I couldn’t roll for shit and he made four of them in quick succession and then failed something like four turns in a row. It added a certain fateful beauty to the encounter however as they just managed to defeat his summoned minions and get up to wail on him as he completed his last attempt. Some sort of horrible hybrid between gorilla and human the size of an 18 wheeler was starting to push its way between the planes, sporting the same blazing eyes everyone posessed by Vodal had. My players got the last swing in just in time and watched as the portal collapsed but not before Valkek (they found his name later on a number of spellbooks upstairs) got a good look at them. Hopefully he’s stuck to his plane for the foreseeable future, but he did manage to get out I  W I L L  R E M E M B E R so maybe they didn’t get off scott free ;D
The Aftermath
Eirlys picked up a cool new bow to finally have a shot at hitting things. Maybe. Mirasha confirmed Vodal had been a vampire. The house collapsed into a giant sinkhole without Vodal’s magic. All in a day’s work.
Tumblr media
They decided to swing back and check on the two NPCs they’d met along the way. Alber was first - they’d found him bound to a pond inhabited by a baby krakenling a couple session earlier. As it turns out, freed from Vodal’s control he’d finally been allowed to pass on and join his long-dead wife in the afterlife. They gave him a proper burial and it was very moving, props to my players.
Then it was back to Jarvilli’s house for tea and axe shenanigans.
Tumblr media
Good shit.
Next Up
Well that wraps up a solid story arc. We made a ton of mistakes (myself most of all) but I learned a lot, built some solid plot hooks for the future and made almost as many good choices as bad.
We’re heading into Neverwinter next, to visit Stephanie at the Lady Finger Inn and I can’t wait.

Cheat Summoners War
Subsequently after i acquired the sport, the introduction wasn’t just about everything to be looking forward to together with the storyline was really generic avarice well over mana crystals brought about the environment The training was really simple: summon monsters, effectiveness them up, equip runes and purchase constructions.
