I’ve ranted this ironically everywhere except on my own page but

It ticks me off that Disney didn’t have, like, movie promo items accompanying The Haunted Mansion while all these other movies are just plain spoiling us with fantastic merch.

I know The Mouse has the money to give us something, but it personally feels like they just didn’t really try a whole lot when it came to marketing this movie.

Just!!!

Popcorn containers in the shape of Madam Leota’s crystal ball, or the Hat Box if they didn’t want to get too occulty

A special flavor of ICEE like a mixed berry kind that comes out a paler blue than blue raspberry, so it’s like the ghosts. Comes in a cup that you could frankly just slap the image of the mansion on or something. Or hell, make the cup resemble Hatbox’s top hat!

Drink umbrellas, larger than the normal ones because they’re decorated like the types of parasols you might see at a second line

Pins: One in the shape of a top hat that says “Happy Hauntings”, or a trio set that looks like the Hitchhiking Ghosts (you can buy separately or all three)

Collectible, like, I guess almost post-card like cards with the tarot-themed poster designs on them with the meanings of what they symbolize on the back

It’s not merch, but maybe an area with cut outs of Ezra, Phineas, and Gus that people can take pics with, like how people took pics in the Barbie box. (Yeah, they’re only in the movie for a second, but it’s still a nice gesture I think people would enjoy.)

And these are just off the top of my head! I’ll admit that some of this frustration comes from the fact that I love to collect movie merch that some theaters will sell, but seriously: Haunted Mansion movie merch has so much potential! It constantly feels like Disney is practically served opportunities and obvious choices on silver platters, only to completely disregard them!

HAUNTED MANSION

soooo, i was checkin out the official HauntedMansion account on twitter and was watching a new promo snippet-

and something caught my eye, so i took a screenshot to show you all

OHHH MANNNN, WHAT IS GOING ON HEREEE??

now im not great at analyzing stuff- but we've seen this shot in the trailers before- but not this close to Hatbox Ghost or Ben (LaKeith's character)

from certain reviews ive seen on Twitter, the film itself deals with loss and grief- and from other stuff apparently Ben is a widowed man? So his wife could've died?

Hatbox in from the snippets and trailers we've seen- he clearly is shown as a unrelenting force of great power. Or in simple words, a dark spirit (As what Harriet has said) He's clearly interacting more with Ben in most of the scenes shown on twitter. (Being chased, ect)

In one of the snippet presumably Gracey's voice (shown in the captions says)

"His power is beyond control." (Alluding to the fact our Hatbox Ghost is very powerful dark spirit- I dunno if that's the correct saying on what Gracey said in the promo HDFSJKS)

in the screenshot above- it appears Hatbox is calmer, even possibly acting gentle- less hostile toward the mortal.

Hatbox is visibly outstretching his hand for Ben. Ben, looking cautious (that's all I can make out LOL- perhaps a tiny bit curious?)

(Keep in mind Hatty clearly DESPISES the mortal characters from what is shown from all the promo stuff on insta an twitter)

So, why would he be acting understanding toward Ben? Our mortal character?

Then again- Hatbox Ghost could be lying, deceiving Ben-

Like?? Hatbox (or Alistair) is clearly saying something to Ben. But what is he saying? Well, we'll have to wait till the film releases. ALTHOUGH! going with the snippets ect, and if I'm correct..

What if Hatbox is offering Ben a deal, he can allow Ben too see his dead wife again? But only if Ben joins Hatbox- by basically, un-a-living himself. Pretty dark, who knows what's going down in that scene!

I have a feeling Hatbox is just being a manipulator, trying to seep into Ben's mind- breaking him down, lying to him, because Ben's presumably suffered a lot in the film. (Cause it's clear- Hatbox is the bad fella in the film)

BUT IDKK, this snippet just took me by interest- and I can't wait to see what will play out HFDSJKDSKJDSJK

This is just a theory of course..

Ninjago Fic Rec Week: Day 7

only did one post all week, don’t know if I’ll have time to finish this one, can’t remember anything I’ve ever read, trawled through my email to find anything to post, I don’t remember half of these very well, let’s do this

Space Crown by FropessionalWriter/ @justgotluigid. Sci-fi Geodeshipping where Cole is a criminal and Jay is trying to capture him! Very fun.

Empty Echoes by @camkablam is a fantastic Echo Zane-centric fanfic with lots of twists, letting him meet the ninja and discover the truth about his family

The You I Knew by TombRaiderNinja/ @i-am-the-bluejay is another Geodeshipping fic, featuring Jay grappling with Cole’s murder and discovering a messed-up reality in the wake.

Bound Memories by ExecutiveCucumber is an AU diverging from the season 2 finale where the Overlord wasn’t defeated and creatures of darkness roam the land. I love fic set in the older seasons because of how creative it can be, and this one is certainly no exception!

powersurge by @kicktwine is a really cool little fic showing what happens when the ninja’s powers react to their emotions hhhhrngh love when powers go haywire with their user’s feelings

Alterline by @nin-jay-go is a rewrite of Ninjago that’s been in the works for a long time! there have been lots of creative changes so far with more to come

Pretty Penny Tavern is a classic by @sibillascribbles08! An AU with the ninja kids and their friends all working under a tavern run by Ronin, dealing with the issues in their lives and Ronin’s

and if you’ll forgive me EVEN MORE self-promo, my own That is Where They Wait follows the ninja and co trying to escape a haunted mansion they entered looking for Shade and learning some dark things about the past in the process; technically discontinued but I plan to post notes for it and write snippets while I have the energy (I would appreciate it because I thrive on feedback hehe)

100% betting that disney was gonna have a full promo campaign for haunted mansion with the huge cast but then the strike happened and they had to scramble to come up with ANYTHING to market it

they were already planning to release it in july. they saw the diverse cast and dipped

Huh, so this promo video for DCA Tower mentions a programmable ride system that they’re “taking advantage of for surprise thrills.”  I find this odd since, one inexplicable variance between shaft C and the others aside, DCA maintained the same drop profile throughout its run, never gaining the randomized ride experiences that Florida (and eventually Paris) received.  That was part of the reason it was considered the “budget” version of the ride.

Also, the same guy says there’s special effects that guests haven’t seen before, which I assume is just marketing fluff... from what I can tell, while it certainly uses effects in unique ways, Tower doesn’t use anything that wasn’t used in other Disney Attractions before?  If anyone knows more about this, let me know, but in my research Tower wasn’t unique in its special effects, just in its application of them to this particular ride system.  Most of its effects are rooted in illusions Imagineers perfected with the Haunted Mansion!

Funny enough, the architect in charge of the design also says that he wanted to fool people into calling the City of Anaheim and inquiring about the new hotel!  I feel so sorry for that guy in the wake of Breakout.  RIP to the city of Anaheim’s skyline.

Owen barely mentioned Jonathan, it was the interviewer hyping Kang's involvement in the show (which, incidentally, I've been told isn't as much as people have been led to believe).

This does give me concern for how the promo of season 2 is gonna go, though. I was thinking Owen wouldn't be much a part of it since Haunted Mansion is around the same time but if the timeline for Loki he said is true it'll probably be like a month after HM so he likely would be heavily involved for both.

I mean, depends on how this legally unfolds. If it’s swept under the rug, maybe nothing is gonna change. But also, if it’s not as big as people think, then there’s less of a reason to include him in promos (if that makes sense???)

Me personally I just want more Wilson/Hiddleston content. Give me that. We have been deprived.

Hi, tenor.

So, I recently binged my way through VoicePlay’s music videos on YouTube. (Hello, latest hyperfixation.) And I couldn’t help but notice that there was a period of a year or so when they were being particularly deliberate about some of their staging to ensure that their incredible tenor / short king, Eli, was boosted up to be closer to the other guys' heights. Specifically, during the era when both Earl and J.None were full-time members of the band, so everyone else was a fair bit taller than him.

(Side note: As someone of about the same height and prone to perching myself, I can totally understand if being up higher was at least partly his own preference. Shout out to my fellow kitchen counter and furniture arm sitters.)

Do I think it's necessary to hide the group's height differences? Absolutely not. And clearly neither do they, because there are plenty of videos where they don't do it. (Or just pop him on an apple box for closer-framed shots.) Which is part of why it caught my eye when it did happen. But it's interesting to look at their methods and degrees of adjusting as additional aspects of their creativity.

From a production standpoint, it makes a lot of sense to have everyone’s heads at roughly the same level in the visual frame. It can make camera and lighting setups simpler. Especially since they’re singing together, so we want to see their faces. But the deliberateness in some of the blocking is more successful than in others.

In my opinion, it seems most natural when the guys are in more varied positions that feel motivated by the set dressing. For example, in their videos for Tennessee Whiskey and Sh-Boom, they have someone standing / leaning and the rest seated on slightly staggered levels to create a line that arcs a bit, both vertically as well as away from the camera at the center. They also all have at least one foot off the floor. So Eli being on the highest seat with both feet up stands out less. It seems more like casual happenstance.

Honorable mention to the Candy Girl section of their Boy Bands in 5 Minutes medley, which gives Eli a brief respite from being towered over, and gives all the guys a break from the dance choreography. It's a cluster rather than a line, but it has a similar effect as the other two examples.

It’s a bit more obvious when Eli’s the only one on a different level. I think they made it work fairly well in their video for Bridge Over Troubled Water, because he’s at the end of the row on a piano bench. So it feels like there’s a plausible meta-narrative reason for him to be there, maybe playing notes on the piano for pitch adjustments or warm-ups. But everyone else gets comfy armchairs, which feels a bit unfair.

I also noticed it in their Thinkin Bout You video. Because the other four are in (different) upholstered armchairs, but Eli’s tucked between Geoff and J on a plain, armless wooden chair. To their credit, they did their best to adjust the spacing and camera angles to make it look like maybe there just wasn’t enough room in the three-walled set for a fifth wide seat. Honestly, I might have spotted this one only because I was looking for it by the time I watched that video, but now I can’t unsee it.

“Do you have a point in all of this?” I hear you asking. Well, kind of. It’s this:

Once I noticed that it was happening, every additional instance caught my eye. And then came Hide and Seek. It also has static staging, but it's much more spread out — partly to accommodate the green-screening of Lauren and Cesar, and partly in keeping with the Haunted Mansion theme. Eli is quite visibly elevated on a barrel top like the character from the theme park ride that is also in the portrait behind him.

But that brought to mind the darn bit from That 70s Show that’s now become a meme.

And now I guess you get to be reminded of it, as well. I take no pride in this. I just had to get it out of my weird brain.

My sincerest apologies to Eli for that last part if he somehow sees this. I mean no disrespect. We see you, and we definitely hear you. You’re an amazing singer and artist, somehow getting even better with each project. I hope that your recent, more comparably sized collaborators have been a nice change of pace.
