Hidden Gems: Special Edition

5 7 underrated works by @skeptiquewrites

It’s been ages since I did a Hidden Gems post so I’m probably a bit rusty but I thought this was the perfect way to celebrate our dear Tee. I’ve loved her work ever since the first fic I came across, and I am over the moon that she was the first fandom friend I was lucky to meet in person earlier this month! We immediately hit it off and had the BEST time around - dinner at a cute Vietnamese place, a walk along the canal, ice cream treats while talking fandom & life. A perfect date night that could have been pulled out from one of her fabulous summery fics if you ask me 😌

It was even harder to choose how to celebrate her birthday having met such a lovely person - after many single recs and lists I was like “what else is there???” But after some thinking with the help of my partner in crime @sweet-s0rr0w I came up with the idea of boosting some of my favourite hidden gems by Tee, fics that I don’t see recced often but deserve all the attention and buzz. They will tug at your heartstrings and make you fall even more in love - not only with Drarry but with summer aesthetics, its endless possibilities, and with Tee’s quiet, charming, elegant, wistful and seductive writing.

These are all shorts but each perfectly placed word and well executed plot contain new and unique universes. Each clever line and lush dose of mutual want - either followed by delicious smut or equally sexy doses of quiet intimacy - fill me with different but wonderful emotions. I think the banner pic translates very well one of the best feelings I experience reading her fics: how special it is to celebrate the little things, how powerful yet vulnerable we are when facing the inevitability of falling in love, how one magical second spent on summer nights, as fleeting and removed from our traditional sense of time and space as they might be, can last forever. I hope the fics and quotes I selected below give you a tiny taste of the magic contained in each one of her short, brilliant love stories. Happiest of birthdays, my dear friend! ♥️

“Will we ever learn? We’ve been here before.” Recording the Hallows' fifth album with Draco brings up the past in a way Harry’s never expected.

The music’s a little wistful, haunting even with no words, recorded in the middle of the night. Harry has done this dozens of times before and for other people. There is no way he has forgotten how to write a song.

🎇 No Distance (E, 5k)

Harry doesn’t believe in resolutions, because a new year doesn’t mean feeling any different. But something feels possible, meeting Draco again in Zurich. The past is the past, but the future can be different. Sequel to Nothing Left to Burn.

“Poor thing,” Draco responds and presses his lips to the back of Harry’s hand. It's a little mocking, but Harry's heart hasn’t taken the memo.

Tangerine is the kind of guy to go above and beyond for the special people in his life, going out of his way for his loved ones. With you, it was no different.

He had you to himself for the entire day, wanting nothing other than to spoil you and make you smile. He had spent weeks planning for your birthday, organising everything to the second so that he could give you the special day that you deserve.

This morning he had treated you with a home-cooked spread in bed, a tray of all your favourite breakfast foods with a beautiful bouquet of fresh-picked flowers. He was always very prompt with timing but even more so with the day he planned for you, so the next thing on the agenda was gifts.

He had his hands clasped over your eyes as he lead you down the stairs, ushering you into the living room where you were surprised with a floor full of presents, balloons and banners. He slowly removed his hands, watching your expression as you gazed around at the decorated room, taking in his sweet grand gesture.

He lead you to the sofa where he handed you your first present, placing the neatly wrapped gift box on your lap, waiting patiently to see your reaction. His tender blue eyes followed your every movement as you made your way through the many piles of presents, watching in anticipation as you tore the paper.

He really spoiled you, he got you everything you could possibly want and then some; the bag you had your eyes on, the series of books you hadn’t yet got around to buying, the full-length floor plant you were saving up for, that sweater you really wanted, the lip gloss you were running low on. Anything he thought you needed or wanted, he got it all.

After the presents you both snuggled on the sofa where you thanked him endlessly, littering each other's faces with kisses until he shared the next part of the plan of today.

He had taken you to lunch at that little restaurant by the river where you indulged on whatever it was that you were craving, chatting and laughing the whole time as you both enjoyed a couple light alcoholic beverages.

On the way back home, he had stopped by the bookstore, leading you inside with his hand in yours, swinging in unison. He slipped his hand from yours and into his pocket, reaching for his bank card, instructing you to “go crazy.” He followed you around the shop, holding the numerous books you had picked up, balancing them in his arms as you continued to search through the sections, seeing what would catch your interest.

The rest of the day was spent at home, enjoying each other's company as you found new homes for all of your new gifts.

There was one more thing Tangerine had planned for the night, but he wasn’t able to do it with you around. So he ran you a bath, filling the tub with bubbles, rose petals and bath salts, lining the surrounding area with candles and incense. He allowed you some alone time to soak in the warm ambience-filled room while he set up for the next portion of the night.

After a short while, you left the tub, wrapping yourself in the towel he had been warming on the radiator for you. Upon exiting you notice arrows placed on the floor, following the directions, you see a neat pile of his pyjamas on the bed that he had laid out for you. Drying off, you dress yourself in the checkered bottoms and baggy tee. Applying a shortened version of your skincare routine before continuing after the trail of markings.

Following the arrows downstairs and into the living room you see a bed made up on the floor with mountains of blankets and pillows, the cosy space lit with fairy lights. “No fucking way.” You whisper, far too stunned to muster actual words.

“Surprise,” He grins, kneeling on the covers, holding a basket of snacks. “Come sit.”

“You did all this?” You quietly ask, looking around in astonishment at the decorated area.

He boyishly smiles, placing the basket aside, slinking his arms around you and flopping you both back onto the makeshift bed. “Mhm. Ya like it?” He cutely questions, kissing your temple.

“Uh-yeah. It’s beautiful, thank you.” You smile, cosying into his side.

“Alright give me a minute,” he smiles, slowly removing himself from your grip.

“You leaving me already?” You playfully whine, sitting up as you follow his gaze

“Hm… yeah. Park ya arse there.” He grins, patting at the edge of the blow-up mattress. “Will only be a minute.”

“Can’t believe you’re leaving me again… on my birthday, too.” You smirk, watching him leave.

“Yeah well, shut up.” He calls out from the other room, chuckling earnestly. “Alright, close ya eyes.” He instructs.

Particularly doing as he says, you cover your eyes, separating your fingers so you could see through the gaps.

“I see that,” he grins, poking his head into the room. “I knew you’d do that, close ‘em.”

He slowly makes his way over to you, lightly humming the tune of ‘happy birthday’ as he walks towards you. Stopping once he gets to your feet, kneeling in front of you with a homemade cake in hand, smiling at you with admiration as you open your eyes. “Make a wish.”

Beaming at him, you blow out the candles as you silently made your wish. “Did you make that yourself?” You ask as your eyes darted over the icing and decorations. “No way you made that.”

“Why? Is it bad?” A playful expression spreads across his features.

“God, no. It’s incredible… thank you.”

“I watched a couple videos online.” He chuckles, sitting beside you with the cake in his lap. “Go on…” grinning as he pulled two forks from his pyjama bottom pocket.

“Not got a knife?” You laugh, eyeing him as he passed you the utensil.

“Nah… actually, you know what. Dinner is on its way.”

“Nah, cake first,” you waft your hand, dismissing him as you picked up a fork. “What’d you get for dinner?”

“Surprise.” He wryly grins, avoiding your questioning.

For the rest of the evening, you ate dinner from your favourite takeout spot as you binged on shitty reality tv and junk food. Appreciating one another’s presence as you enjoyed your quiet birthday night-in with your charming boyfriend.

Every single one of Harry’s exes has gone on to marry the next person they date, and with the upcoming nuptials of numbers six and seven to each other, Harry’s feeling exhausted by it all. It doesn’t really matter if he lets people assume Draco Malfoy is his boyfriend for a moment of peace. In any case, Draco’s been away for five years and there’s no way he would find out, right?

They had such a short amount of time they had left, it wouldn't matter, he could. It was such a short amount of time they had left, it mattered too much, he shouldn't. He contented himself with a squeeze of his hand and a meaningful look. He memorised the way Draco looked truly joyful with his little tree, and a diagram. Imagining what it must feel like to save the day after five years of trying and trying again.

Happy happy birthday Tee! I’ve been saving this rec for so long and now everyone and their dog have read this incredible story (as it should be!) so this became more of a love letter (hehe) to you instead, which is a fitting way to celebrate your day 🎉 I’ve been following your works for quite a while now and every new fic - or brilliant microfic! - manages to take my breath away and surprise me in new, different ways. I love your creativity and versatility, I love the way you explore different beloved tropes giving them your own twist, I love the way you depict adult Harry and Draco and above anything, I LOVE your inspiring and wistful brand of romance. If there’s something all your stories channel with no exception, is good old romance. They always hit a special place inside my heart and make it go all soft and aching, wanting to live a love story exactly like that. I love the way you depict affection between them, and I feel privileged for having the chance to read it!

Now back to Yours Truly and to why it blew me away… I think my favorite thing about it is how that summary gives us NO IDEA of what this is about. One might think this is yet another cute fake relationship to lovers only to get slapped in the face with sexy, competent and enthusiastic ECOLOGIST DRACO, and increasingly smitten Harry caught off guard by his quiet allure. Add to that perfect found family/friendship feels and a tender portrait of adult romance, we got a winner! The pacing is perfect, I felt immersed and charmed by the relaxing atmosphere, the delicious slow burn, the light fun humour and smooth sexual tension. I barely realized the fic was about to end until I reached the last couple paragraphs and was like “oh 🥺🥺 what now?”

I am particularly obsessed with their voices in here, especially this capable and serious but still kind, approachable Draco. He’s a vision, and it’s impossible not to fall in love with him learning about his life and job through Harry’s eyes. The dynamics are really fun and they get closer in an organic, teasing but sweet way. Despite the main ruse, the falling in love never feels rushed, giving them space to breathe and process all those feelings before getting together. There’s still a sense of urgency underneath, that mix of wonder and despair that blurs our minds once we realize we’re falling for someone and see that no matter the path we choose, it requires a leap of faith. I think that quote illustrated the dilemma perfectly and that’s why I picked it!

Finally, I am absolutely in love with the sense of community that you created here. Their group of friends is so united, cheerful and supportive I was conflicted between wanting more Drarry moments and more found family vibes. Luckily for us you have balanced both perfectly coming up with amazing celebration excuses. Love love love the Terries (😂😂) wedding, the meddling friends, mysterious knowing Luna, party lover Hermione and smitten Ron holding her purse!! Each character has a vibrant, charming and unique personality and they come together around Drarry as a comfort blanket, making my heart smile and hurt wishing I had something like that. Stunning mood and characterization!

Between Harry’s vulnerable honest letters and Draco’s equally vulnerable unsent ones, this fic will immediately work its way inside everyone’s heart. It is one of the loveliest, most creative takes on fake relationship + epistolary I’ve seen recently and a wonderful reading experience. Gentle, funny and honest in a soft, wistful way. Tee, it’s been a privilege to follow your work as you perfect your voice through the years. I’m always so excited to see a new fic of yours, I don’t even check the tags knowing it will hit all my boxes. I hope you’re having the happiest of birthdays and that we get to celebrate many more in the Drarry fandom! Thank you so much for sharing your writing with us 💜
