Annual Christmas dinner with Tina & Andrew~

We went to Hansik - the only Korean restaurant in north Edmonton -.-" it has been around for quite some time. Been meaning to try it out before the pandemic but never did . .. & now, just visiting for the 1st time. It was the 1st visit for Tina & Andrew as well.

Their menu:

Had a mix of text & pictures like most Korean restaurants - in addition to a little blurb about what the dish contains. At a glance, judging by this 1st page, it appears to be a fusion Korean place. Chicken bao bun? Kimchi chicken fries??

Here are the dishes we were more familiar with. Despite it being winter, they still had cold noodles on their menu!

Their soups~

I appreciate them having a kids menu. This is not something common among Korean restaurants. The set menu was interesting too, esp the vegetarian for 2.

So by the menu, what I'm getting is that this place tries to have something for everybody. It's not a bad thing!

However, what's weird is the side dish policy. It's always free banchans at Korean restaurants, but they charge $1 per set of banchan. I think it is reasonable (for it to be $1) - I neither like nor dislike the idea but it's just different (& weird!) for a Korean restaurant. Part of the meal IS the banchan, which is typically free.

We ended up not getting the banchan - not sure why. Just seemed . .. unusual, perhaps.

The budae jjggae~

Little can go wrong with this; it is particularly better on a cold day :P

But there were some 'issues'. Their description included "bean" but there were no beans. The broth was VERY salty - like. .. I probably had an entire week's worth of sodium from eating some of this soup alone =/ the ingredients were good. It did hurt knowing this was $41 bcos when I was in Korea, a singular portion was only ~$5-6 CAD.

Of note was their sausage option. Besides typical hot dog sausage, they had the small cocktail sausages as well as Italian sausage (yes, they had that!) & also some other. .. light tan coloured sausage. Ie: they added 'fancy sausage'. I felt that was unnecessary. I just like it simple - hot dogs & Spam, you know what I mean? Budae jjigae isn't meant to be 'fancy'.

We also got half order of the sweet soy chicken. Wasn't a fan. I am very picky with KFC. This just didn't hit the spot. The batter was barely existent; it was uneven & not all surfaces were covered. I think I can do a better job at the batter & frying aspect. The flavour was alright; I am not big on sweet soy as flavour but it wasn't bad. Flavour was there. The chicken texture. .. poor. Chicken was dry.. . This was disappointing for all of us.

There was also an oops from Andrew's drink order. He ordered grapefruit-ade & ended up getting strawberry. When he informed them of the mistake, they did offer to remake but Andrew was fine with the strawberry. The drink itself, according to Tina & Andrew, was not good. Easily make-able at home. I don't have a picture but when you imagine ade, it's supposed to be a well-mixed drink. But the strawberry ade wasn't 'pink'. It was plain soda with some strawberry 'topping' so . ..a rip-off.

So yeah. .. it wasn't the best Korean meal we've had. It's sad this is the only option on the north side. I mean, I guess they're surviving strictly based on that - the ONLY Korean option in the far north. *shrugs*

Probably won't be revisiting.

the remaining members of vi’s group, galxsee, in the grand theft auto 5 verse or whatever idol / popstar verse he has… they might pop up every now and then since they’re reuniting, so a little blurb on them all.

jihoon kim / leader. horribly irresponsible with a bad coke habit. but he’s pretty nice and he tips very well at restaurants. if you want a bestie for life, he’s your guy! but you cannot trust him with your car, he will lose it in a bet. a father of two, much to our dismay. didn’t wife up his baby mamas, either. but he’s there for his kids and tries his best.

namsung yu / look at that smile!!! him and virote are the ‘ our dental work is so beautiful and expensive ’ club. angel. very well meaning, if not naive at times. enjoys reading comic books. :) we love namsung in this house. :) he’s also very good at composing! music theory is his strongest asset. he loves classical music puns… don’t ask him about debussy.

sangjin jung / very rude. very judgmental. he’ll cut you off in traffic without using a blinker. he thinks you’re a dumb fucking idiot, but he sings very well and i can forgive him for being an asshole because he can outsing everyone in the room. vi had to share a room with him and thought he would get stabbed in his sleep—they get along, tho. sangjin would duel with patrick bateman and win.

hansik cha / muscleheaded jock with a lot of tatts but he’s kind of an introvert and spends most of his time being chronically online with social media. streams a lot from his home gym. also play uno online with him plz. he’s from the uk… and no one will let him forget it, either. gets nicknamed ‘ tea bag ’ in a double entendre kind of way and it’s torture. allergic to cheese. gets triple cheese on his subway sandwiches anyway.

yongyi wen / from china. he’s perpetually confused… and kind of tepid in personality. probably because he has so much anxiety that it’s frozen his entire brain. however, this mf can play a guitar and make you cry in the process. he never has much to say… so please don’t talk to him. he’s shy and does not want to talk outside of his professional work. hansik and him communicate by telepathy because they are both shut-ins or something. they stare at each other and blink and they just get it.

junichiro soseki / he’s actually the third oldest of everyone with that baby ass face of his, he’s older than vi by a few years. from japan, but studied in canada for a couple of years or so. hated it, 0 / 10 would never go back. went to college for food science, he be cookin’. he’s as cute as his face displays… a lovely lad. but a little impatient when people aren’t as quick with learning as he is. also impatient with people who are bad at communicating… … so you know what that means for the two above.

4월 - April Calendar

Holidays & Special Days in April in Korea! None of these are "red days" (bank holidays), so work continues as normal. My school calendar lists everything so I thought it'd be fun to go over :)

5일 - 식묵일 / Arbor Day: just like the name implies, it's about celebrating/planting trees

5일 - 청명 / Cheongmyeong: the (solar) year is divided into 24 terms and this is one of them; supposed to be the day with the clearest weather and is considered the start of the year's farming

6일 - 한식 / Hansik: the 105th day after the winter solstice aka "Cold Food" (not "Korean food"); people do ancestral rites and visit their ancestors' graves

19일 - 4.19혁명 ("사일구") / April Revolution: mass protests against president Syngman Rhee that took place from April 11-26, 1960. This is a super important event in modern Korean history, so it's honored every year.

[tw: death] On March 15, 1960 people in Masan protested against the rigged presidential election and the police ended up killing high school student Kim Ju-yul. When his body was discovered on April 11th, mass protests broke out in Masan. The protests spread to Seoul on April 18th, where university students demanded new elections. On April 19th, 100,000 students marched to the Blue House, where police opened fire and the government declared martial law in order to stop the protestors. On April 25th, professors, students, and other citizens joined together, and the police refused to attack the protestors. During the 2 weeks of protesting, 186 people were killed and thousands were injured. On April 26th, Rhee resigned and the government's corruption was blamed on VP Lee Ki-poong, who was then murdered by his son on April 28th. 21일 - 과학의날 / Science Day: a day to celebrate science; there are special events (especially for kids) but I don't think it's particularly noticeable/well-known

28일 - 충무공탄산일 / Chungmugong (이순신/Yi Sun-shin's) Birthday: Admiral Yi Sun-shin is a very famous military general who fought the Japanese in the Imjin War (late 1500s). 충무공 is an honorary term given to a distinguished military person & 탄산일 is a formal word for birthday (used for kings, Buddha, Jesus, etc.). Despite everyone knowing 이순신, I'm not sure if the average person would be able to say when his birthday was...
