Sorry I don’t have the nice digital panels but. I know everybody was talking about the last page of Love’s Lightning Heart (for good reason), but can we just take a moment to appreciate the panel layout here and throughout the rest of the story please I just think it’s neat.
Rant about page design below!
Like there is not a single page in LLH that is entirely composed of standard square/rectangular panels, and the closest it gets is the famed last page, when Ray comes back (a return to normalcy both for the characters and the layout), though it’s still not completely “straight,” because the lives of Red Racer and Flashlight will never be completely normal. The non traditional layout also parallels the fact that this is an alternate universe where things work differently, and there’s probably something about when pages are symmetrical or not that represents something that I don’t want to put the effort into analyzing. And obviously this page is flower shaped to emulate the fact that Hank’s on Soul Sucking Flower World. I love storytelling and I love when storytelling is aided by something as simple as panel layout!!! Like I’ve only gotten into comics over the last couple of months and I haven’t even read that many in that time but my favorite thing about the medium is how there is a distinct idea of what “normal” looks like and how the choice to either follow that or break the pattern influences how the story is perceived.
Some other interesting uses of panel layout that I’ve seen and liked, just because while I’m here I may as well commit to the topic:
-Midnighter (2015) does a good job of using layout to add to the dynamicism of fight scenes and also to place emphasis on when he’s doing Head Computer Things
- This is part Otto Schmidt’s art and part page design, but Babs’s dream sequence in DC vs Vampires #8 in particular, though the rest of DVV does make interesting choices
- Literally any time that Barry Allen taps into the Speedforce to think and we get the cool focus on him while all of his thoughts surround him in little panels
Like yeah!! Use the medium to its full potential!!

How come every time we get content with Hal and Barry together or an assortment of that, one of them always ends up dying or something. Give them a cute little moment where they're happy
(Writing this even though I do love the romance tragedy tropes, SERIOUSLY SOMEONE WRITE THEM A HAPPY MOMENT OR GIVE THEM A HUG)
Writing things once again past 12 am is my specialty because I have terrible sleeping habits

Personally I feel Hank Hallmark should go by Torch, or Power-Torch.
Tumblr media
ONE-as Flashlight sounds JUST a little too silly for him(he's a pas-TICHE, not a parody, different), TWO-if we go with Power-Torch it'd be a cool flop on Power-Ring from Earth-3!
ALSO-thank you Grant Morrison for allowing Hank to unbury his husband Red Racer(the low point of Rebirth Superman).

I love the enthusiasm 😁

I don't know if I'll be finishing this one, but I love the concept of Connor unknowingly becoming a father from a stupid one night stand, and turning to Hank for help, it's meant to eventually result in Connor, Hank, and Hank's wife forming an unconventional three parent family unit, raising their boys as brothers. Hank and Connor remain platonic in this au until the accident and get together after they've both grieved Mrs. Anderson's fridgeing death. All angsty about possibly hurting their sons even more than losing their mom hurt them. Also angst about Chloe's awful controlling rich people family and her choice to leave baby Nines to Connor. Also, RK900 as Connor's offspring is just, an old headcanon of mine. Started as a joke, genuinely liked it as a concept, and I don't like oc kids, so, getting to work in a character who's only action is adding lore makes perfect sense to me. One way or another, he wouldn't exist without Connor, and is totally based on Connor, that spells baby for the sake of plot to me.
Thank you for asking, I hope I didn't let you down! (But if I did, you can always ask again 🤣)

I don't know how to really express this except to come across as a "kids these days" scold, but so much of the criticism of queerness in Good Omens would simply not be a thing if kids these days watched more 20th century queer media. Or more complex indie queer media in general.
People seem to want a show that's like the straight stories they grew up with but gay. Or the gay fanfiction they grew up with. But that's not really the tradition it's coming from. First off the novel was released in 1990. Queer film classics of the time are Dead Poet's Society (1989) and Torch Song Trilogy (1988). The TV miniseries Tales of the City (1993) wasn't made until 3 years later and it was so far out there it never had a huge audience. Philadelphia (1993) is also 3 years out and was basically the first big studio queer film. The first fluffy queer Hallmark-style romcom wasn't until Big Eden in 2000, a full 10 years after publication.
Queer stories from the time it was written were about complex and often fraught relationships between people who the world was trying to force apart. There is an incredibly strong tradition in queer films of relationships with no guarantees they will work out both in the face of their personal baggage and the weight of the world. Take a film like Torch Song Trilogy that's about the two great loves of Arnold Beckoff's life over 9 years and how homophobia shapes them. Both externally (especially Allen) and internally like Ed struggling with his bisexuality and being terrified of being publicly out. Written and starred in by Harvey Fierstein, who identified as a gay man at the time and only came out as nonbinary last year.
The Boys In The Band (1968 play, filmed 1970 and 2020) was a monumental moment in Broadway history where finally there was a play about gay men in their own words where no one died and very strongly showed that homosexuality doesn't make people miserable but homophobia sure does. But that homophobia also throws their personal lives into constant turmoil and none of them are in happy relationships, although Hank and Larry are devoted to each other in their own fucked up way.
"Relationships are complicated and hard to make work and sometimes a struggle against the odds" is an aesthetic of classic queer film making. Partly it was influenced by the Hays Code (although independent films were not bound to it), partly influenced by the rampant queerphobia in society at the time that was inescapable. But it's also an aesthetic choice to resist the banal and unrealistic relationship depictions of straight media. There are actual stakes to the relationship. Queer people were actively resisting a world that said "Romance is seeing someone across the room and instantly falling in love with each other and little conflicts happen along the way but ultimately they're destined to be together and everything is happily ever after." Recall that "stalking as romance" was a completely inescapable trope in 1980s straight romance films, and every goddamn movie was being turned into a romance film.
So queer people in film and television when they can make what they please have a long tradition of saying instead "People don't always realize the feelings they've developed for a queer partner right away. They may have reasons for denying those feelings that are both a reflection of the cruelty in society and of their own insecurities. People struggle with where they belong and their relationships reflect that. Loving someone doesn't mean they don't also drive you crazy and you might fight with them constantly. But that doesn't negate the love or that feeling that even if things aren't okay, they're better with that person around. But maybe that person can't stay around. The world may be against you. And also maybe you don't just want that one person in your life. Soulmates is a very flawed model. Sometimes the strongest love is a struggle with yourself and the world and your person. You have to overcome yourself first. Happily ever after is a lie. You may be happy for a while, and hopefully for a long while, but everything ends. And you have to be ready to love again. Also your platonic bonds are just as important and life-altering as your romantic ones. Sometimes those platonic bonds include fucking if you want them to. Real life isn't a bunch of platitudes and world-altering moments, it's daily work to better yourself and the world around you. Especially when things just fucking suck. But also remember to have fun and fuck the haters. People who don't support you can eat rocks and you should yell at them more to shut the fuck up."
That is a fundamentally different outlook on what a "good relationship depiction" looks like. Personally, I thought I hated romance movies and then I started watching queer romance movies and discovered I love them and watch them all the time. Because it turns out what I hated was relationships being shown that had nothing at all to do with reality and privileged incredibly toxic ideals. Finally there was complexity, there were stakes, and there were people who had to truly want to be together enough to fight the world for it and not because they happened to be there. There were people actually talking out their problems and looking for resolutions. (And sometimes that resolutions was "I can't fucking deal with this bullshit anymore and I'm out.") For the first time it felt real.
I'm an aroace trans gay man. Nothing about relationships or being in relationships has come easy to me, and the whole paradigm of straight patriarchal romance depictions makes absolutely no sense to me. It's completely alien. Queer romance stories actually feel human.
And that's the tradition Good Omens is coming from, even as it's being retold in 2019-2023 and hopefully beyond. Gaiman's work has always been based in that queer media paradigm. (I've been remiss and daunted and haven't read Pratchett but from what I do know his work also seems to sit more in that world view.) It's a beautiful cinematic tradition and it's baffling to me that people would resist it instead of embracing it for being honest.
And that's when I turn into a crotchety old man complaining about the youth not connecting with the history of their beautiful culture and instead begging for assimilation into a shithole allocishet media landscape that doesn't actually want them except for their money and has nothing at all interesting or valuable to say. But it's very funny (annoying) to me when people claim Good Omens is someone against queer culture when it's so thoroughly bathed in the best of queer media's storytelling traditions and what people are asking for is straight media with the serial numbers filed off. Like, stop being boring please and know literally anything about the culture the adults in the room lived through and were influenced by. The world didn't begin in 2015.
EDIT: I also want to add that in straight media arcs are linear. Traditionally in queer media arcs are cyclical. Queer media very often depicts people going around in circles relearning the same lesson over and over as they inch towards it sinking in. But every time they go through the cycle they gain just a little bit more enlightenment and slowly move towards a better place. From the comments this is an immensely important distinction. People don't actually have cathartic moments where suddenly all their past bad programming is shed and they saunter forward a new person with none of their old baggage. In reality people fall into the same patterns over and over even though they have had every opportunity to learn better. "People magically get better" is a trope of straight media that's an outright and frankly dangerous lie. Again, Good Omens follows the queer tradition not the straight one and it's depicted 6,000 years of that cycle. The world didn't end, and the wheel keeps turning, as it always has and always will. That's so fundamental to queer storytelling traditions I forgot to even mention it.

Hi Sam, I'm just about to read your Christmas Hallmark movies post. I'm looking for something different to fill in spaces in my Christmas movie advent calendar. At the moment I'm looking at Santa Paws, which I think says it all in the title.
I do have a question for you, though. This is something that splits our household but i will accept your ruling.
Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Honestly in my opinion Die Hard is barely a movie.
I haven't seen it in a long time because I find it tedious, so I'm not really qualified to argue whether or not it's a Christmas movie. But since I can't really wade into the debate, instead I will tell you a story about Bruce Willis and the time Tom Hanks reportedly bullied him on the set of Bonfire Of The Vanities.
This was in 1989 or so, and it's difficult to convey just how famous both of these men were at the time. In particular, Willis was famous for his "smirk" which you can probably see in Die Hard several times in place of acting. It had reached the point where not only was he very close to becoming a parody of himself every time he smirked, he was tired of hearing about it.
So Willis and Hanks are watching the dailies from the shoot, and at one point on the film Willis smirks. And Hanks turns to him and says, lightly, "Ah, there it is! The famous smirk!"
Willis reportedly became enraged and stormed out, and it became known as the time Tom Hanks was an asshole to Bruce Willis. The fact that Tom Hanks neutrally remarking on something everyone was definitely going to notice is considered him "being an asshole" is a testament to just how nice and professional he apparently is. (Also we are all sleeping on Colin Hanks who is extremely funny and looks and sounds so much like his father I suspect some kind of cloning experiment.)
Anyway, While You Were Sleeping is a much more enjoyable movie than Die Hard and also twice the Christmas movie that Die Hard could ever hope to be, so the point is a bit moot I feel.

Trick or treat!
happy halloween!!! :DDD
i didn't have anything prewritten for emh so i quickly typed this out, so sorry if this isn't the best!!!!
It was a slow day at the Mansion, slow week actually. Janet was bored. Hank was stuck in his lab doing who knows what, Tony was off on some business trip, and the rest of the Avengers were all scattered in their own rooms doing nothing. And crime, god bless America, crime had seemingly been paused. Not a single super villain alert. None!! Even Jane was busy, a last minute emergency making her leave girls night early. So here Janet was, alone and completely, utterly bored. A loud slam coming from the kitchen had her rushing to it, desperate for any human contact. To her surprise it was Hulk. In hindsight that shouldn't really have surprised her, there wasn't anyone else who logically would be in the kitchen, but it still was a shock to walk into the kitchen and see someone take up 3/4 of the space. "Hey Hulk!" She said, voice chipper. He grunted, side-eyeing her. "Hello." "Whatcha making?" "Sandwich." "What kind?" "Salami." "Oooh," she walks over to him excitedly. "I love salami." He grunts again, but continues to make his sandwich undeterred. After another moment of silence, she speaks again. "What's your favourite movie?" He takes a bite out of his sandwich. "Bruce likes Interstellar." Janet frowns. "What's yours?" "Don't have one." "What-?! How can you not--" She cuts herself off when he gives her a deadpan look. Right. "Well, we're going to have to remedy that."
i didn't write it BUTT right after this janet makes them have a movie marathon and they learn that hulk's favourite genre is the CHEESIEST movies ever. Like Hallmark style movies. Though he likes romcom's too

This Ain’t Hallmark (A Drakgo Fic)
Title:  This Ain’t Hallmark Summary: A Christmas fic with your fave villains, they’re watching movies and being dorks Rating: PG  Author’s Note: I have been working on this for the last month and finally I think it’s done. Did I watch a lot of Hallmark movies to help write this? You bet! It’s a bit of holiday fluff, I hope you enjoy 😁
I checked it through with Grammarly, so it sounds okay, tell me if it doesn’t 😘 Feedback/likes are so appreciated. Will also be posted to AO3.
When Shego was little, one of her fondest memories was watching Hallmark movies with her mother while they decorated the Christmas tree. The way the couples in those movies came together against the backdrop of the holiday season always felt magical but when her mother passed, her heart wasn’t in it anymore; the happy girl she used to be had been replaced with the sarcastic supervillain she was now. She loved her current lifestyle, but Shego found herself feeling nostalgic and decided that a movie marathon was in order.
Shego was in the lounge, making garlands for the small tree that she had acquired during the holiday rush when Drakken appeared, grumpy and dishevelled. The scientist had been working on his new super laser, determined to get it ready for New Year’s, he wearily walked over to the fridge and took out the carton of eggnog, drinking from it.
“Doc, you’ve got to go easy on that stuff, it’s a lot stronger than normal milk.” Shego was supposed to have the lair by herself but at the last moment, Mrs Lipsky had decided to go on a singles cruise leaving her son without holiday plans.
“I’ll be fine, Shego.” He focused his eyes and looked upon his sidekick, she was sitting in the lounge watching television with a bunch of Christmas decorations around her, a cosy sight indeed. “I’ll leave you to it.”
“No, stay. You look like you need a break.” Shego knew she would regret extending the offer, but it was clear he needed to be away from his work for a while. “Sit, relax. It’s Christmas.”
Drakken gave her a nod in appreciation; Shego could be sweet when she wanted to be, not that it would work in someone’s favour to acknowledge it.  He sat down on the opposite end of the couch and tried to get into the spirit. “Can we watch Snowman Hank?”
“We’re watching this.” She said firmly, Shego didn’t understand how someone so evil could be obsessed with a cartoon snowman, it defied logic but then again, Drakken was always doing that.
He decided instead to sit back and watch the movie, Shego seemed engrossed in it but after half an hour, Drakken became easily bored.
“You know, I always thought spinning tops of doom was the way to go, I never considered psychological torture.” Everyone was happy, there was very little conflict and romance was in the air; sounded downright unbearable.
“It is not that bad.” Was it a little corny? Sure, but it had cosy feel-good vibes and she wasn’t completely heartless; sometimes some light, fluffy romance was needed.
“These two have no chemistry.” Drakken gestured to the couple on the screen, the actors might have well just met that afternoon with how clinical they were being towards each other.
Shego raised an eyebrow. “And you know that from the hundreds of women you’ve been with?” A ladies’ man he was not, hell his fling with DNAmy lasted less than a week and she dumped him because she was in love with Monkey Fist of all people.
Drakken shrugged. “I’m a scientist Shego, I know about this sort of thing. There needs to be a spark.”
“You mean like that time your lab caught on fire?” She remembered the chaos of that day, they had to call the fire department for help because the henchmen refused to go in and retrieve Drakken’s equipment.
“Nnngh, must you bring that up?” It was an accident but on reflection, that analogy did work in relation to their current conversation. “They have no fire, no passion.”
Drakken had passion, his desire to take over the world was great even though it got him into trouble nine times out of ten. The tenth time? That was when his plans almost worked, Shego lived for those times.
The couple on the tv finally stopped tiptoeing around each other and started kissing and Shego rolled her eyes, the movie no longer doing it for her. “Okay, I think we’ve had enough of that.” She started flicking through the channels, looking for the one that had Snowman Hank.
She changed the channel quickly, leaving Drakken to wonder what had happened. He frowned. “Did I ruin it for you? Sometimes I just talk Shego, you know that.” A lot of the time she didn’t listen, he wondered why she had in this instance.
Shego shrugged. “It’s fine, you were right, they had no chemistry.” Or they did and Shego just couldn’t recognise was a healthy relationship was these days, it wasn’t like she had experienced one in a while; men were afraid of her ability and her sarcastic nature didn’t exactly endear her to people.
Drakken smiled. “You agree with me? Truly a Christmas miracle.”
The smugness that was radiating off him was too much to bear, Shego raised her hand and ignited it. “Don’t make me hurt you.” She had threatened him with violence before; almost daily at this point, but something was different; there was mischief in his eyes, and damn if it wasn’t attractive.
“I’ll take my chances.” The brandy in the eggnog he had been drinking had made him brave, usually, he’d be halfway down the street afraid of getting second-degree burns from her deadly blasts.
His response had been unexpected, and it gave Shego a wicked idea; All this talk of chemistry had made her wonder if there was anything between them, Drakken got on her nerves sure, but he had his moments.  She leaned over and kissed him.
Drakken froze, he wanted very much to respond but what if this was another moodulator situation? He didn’t think so, this felt more deliberate; Shego was trying to get a rise out of him, what would happen if he reciprocated?
Chemistry-wise, Shego thought their kiss was mediocre at best, which was a good thing, she did not want to suddenly develop feelings for her boss. She was about to pull away and laugh it off when she felt Drakken nibble on her bottom lip.
Oh. Oh, that was hot.
Shego parted her lips slightly in response giving Drakken silent permission to deepen the kiss, a moan escaping when he did just that. How can he be having such an effect on her? This was Drakken! He was not her type; he was crazy and blue and was he drawing patterns on her waist? Ugh! She needed to focus and stop this nonsense, but she found herself wanting to continue, just to see how far Drakken was willing to take this. There was the slightest pull in his touch encouraging her to move closer and Shego found herself going along with it, moving from her seat onto his lap.
Drakken had experienced a lot of hardships in his life, everything from being a failed scientist to being beaten by a teenage hero and her sidekick on multiple occasions but having the woman whom he had been secretly in love with for years willingly in his lap, kissing him felt like a win.
Despite herself, Shego was enjoying this. It had been a while since she had been with someone and Drakken seemed enthusiastic to say the least. Shego wrapped her arms around his neck, playing with his hair. She could get used to this kind of activity, even if the other party was Drakken.
“Shego?” Drakken said breathlessly, getting her attention. “Is this going to be one of those things we never talk about?” Early on in their partnership they had agreed there were just some things best left unsaid, these included things childhood trauma, questions about her powers and significant others. He would understand if this fell under that category.
She knew what he was doing, Drakken was offering her a way out without any repercussions, but Shego had other ideas, would it be so bad if this happened more often? She smiled, giving him another light kiss. “Where is the fun in that?”
“So, you’re receptive to this kind of attention from me?” Amazing, Drakken never would have thought it possible.
Well, there were worse things. “If we’re doing this then we need to set some ground rules. Work comes first; I don’t want you getting all lovesick and thinking you need to be a better man to impress me, I’m here for the evil. Next, no nicknames; you call me hunny bun or Pookie and we’re gonna have a problem.”
Drakken snickered, the very idea that Shego could be anyone’s Pookie was laughable; she just wasn’t that sort of person. “Anything else? “
“Don’t think I’m going to suddenly go easy on you.”  He could do the stupidest things sometimes and he needed to be called out on them.
Drakken was glad for that, he loved Shego for her abrasiveness and sass; her objections made him strive to be better, the road to world domination was not an easy one and Shego kept him focused. “I can agree to those terms.”
“Well okay then.” Shego smiled, this new element to their relationship had potential.
“Should we go out and commit some crime to celebrate?” Earlier in the evening, Drakken was content to wallow in his loneliness but now he had the desire to go out and have some fun.
“I thought you wanted to watch Snowman Hank?” Shego asked, he had seemed so insistent on it earlier.
Drakken smiled and gently lifted Shego off his lap “I’m not sure he would approve of these kinds of shenanigans.” Snowman Hank was all about goodwill to your fellow man, but he had other more devious things in mind.
Hey if they were going to do something his cartoon idol disapproved of, Shego was all for it. She hopped up and smoothed her bodysuit, the action making Drakken raise an eyebrow.
Shego’s skin flushed when she noticed him looking at her; this next phase of their partnership was going to be interesting. “Come on, let’s go deck some halls.” She bounded out of the room and downstairs to the hovercar hangar.
Drakken shook his head, following her, this Christmas was turning out to be a Merry Christmas indeed.
