Papermaking at AP3!
A couple weeks ago and even this past Tuesday, we showed you how, after students in my History of Books & Printing class (INFOST 603) read about the invention of type and letterpress in Europe, we went down to Team Nerd Letterpress, set wood type, and printed a poster. Last week, after reading about the history and technique of hand papermaking, we took a field trip to Anchor Press, Paper, and Print (AP3) in the Riverwest section of Milwaukee to engage in some papermaking.
First, AP3 president Marilyn Propp demonstrated hogging the vat, using the deckle, dipping the screen, pulling a form, and couching the paper onto felts (here's a glossary) -- top three images. Then Miria tried their hands at the process, with much success (next three images). Afterwards, it was a free-for-all, with everyone making paper for the next hour and a half; here in succession are Anna, Caring, Adam, Georgia, and Catherine (with Taj in the background).
The last image is of some still-wet paper forms on felts (actually, synthetic pellons), with attempts at inclusions and paper lamination. The students were clearly exhilarated, and everyone went home exhausted and happy!

“The Patient” (2021)
Handmade paper, monotype, and found object installation
In the context of medicine, what does it mean to be born “different? How is the helpless body of the deformed, defective, or debilitated patient regarded by the doctor? Is it tragedy from the beginning? Is it the justification for a benevolent surgeon’s science experiments? Contending with questions about my own medical history, the Patient asks: what does it look like when your body isn’t your own? How does it feel?
Viewers were encouraged to enter past the gallery's glass partition and handle the folder of documents, which contained copies of medical records of consultations, physical exams, and surgical procedures that I experienced from ages 4 to 6. On the cover and nestled between the pages of documents are a series of monotypes responding to the events.

#MiniatureMonday
Wildflowers of the John Muir Trail
This the finale to our little summer series focusing on a small fraction of the lovely artists books by Peter and Donna Thomas.
This is also my last Miniature Monday post, as I am moving to my new job after graduating this spring. It has been great sharing all these lovely minis, and I am looking forward to seeing those that are posted in the future! --Diane
This wonderful collection of illustrations features plants painted by Donna Thomas while she was hiking the John Muir Trail with Katy McLaughlin.
"They identified these flowers together & Donna painted them on the spot. Donna made this book, using handmade paper made by Peter Thomas. "--Colophon.
Continuous accordion folded strip made from five sections folded to form forty leaves.
Peter and Donna Thomas are "book artists from Santa Cruz, CA. They work both collaboratively and individually; letterpress printing, hand-lettering and illustrating texts, making paper, and hand binding both fine press and artists’ books." They have made over 100 limited edition books, often with Peter making the paper, and Donna doing the illustrations.
Check out more of Donna and Peter's books at Uiowa here.
