Papermaking at AP3!
A couple weeks ago and even this past Tuesday, we showed you how, after students in my History of Books & Printing class (INFOST 603) read about the invention of type and letterpress in Europe, we went down to Team Nerd Letterpress, set wood type, and printed a poster. Last week, after reading about the history and technique of hand papermaking, we took a field trip to Anchor Press, Paper, and Print (AP3) in the Riverwest section of Milwaukee to engage in some papermaking.
First, AP3 president Marilyn Propp demonstrated hogging the vat, using the deckle, dipping the screen, pulling a form, and couching the paper onto felts (here's a glossary) -- top three images. Then Miria tried their hands at the process, with much success (next three images). Afterwards, it was a free-for-all, with everyone making paper for the next hour and a half; here in succession are Anna, Caring, Adam, Georgia, and Catherine (with Taj in the background).
The last image is of some still-wet paper forms on felts (actually, synthetic pellons), with attempts at inclusions and paper lamination. The students were clearly exhilarated, and everyone went home exhausted and happy!

First seven seder tarot-inspired cards for Passover on homemade card stock
I - Kadesh – Recite the Holiday Kiddush over a cup of wine
Oh, give me of the kisses of your mouth,
For your love is more delightful than wine.
Song of Songs 1:2
II - Urchartz – Wash your hands without a blessing
Vast floods cannot quench love,
Nor rivers drown it.
If a man offered all his wealth for love,
He would be laughed to scorn.
Song of Songs 8:7
III - Karpas – Eat a springtime vegetable appetizer
For now the winter is past,
The rains are over and gone.
Song of Songs 2:11
IV - Yachatz – Break the middle matza
The blossoms have appeared in the land,
The time of singing has come;
The song of the turtledove
Is heard in our land.
Song of Songs 2:12
V - Magid – Tell the story of liberation
The green figs form on the fig tree,
The vines in blossom give off fragrance.
Arise, my darling;
My fair one, come away!
Song of Songs 2:13
VI - Rochtza – Wash your hands with a blessing
[You are] a garden spring,
A well of fresh water,
A rill of Lebanon.
Song of Songs 4:15
VII - Motzi, Matza – Bless the matza
I am a rose of Sharon,
A lily of the valleys.
Like a lily among thorns,
So is my darling among the maidens.
Song of Songs 2:1-2

So I have been busy. I handmade a journal. The cover came from an old Catholic book of sermons, the pages are all handmade and the entire thing is handbound.
Oh and the coolest part?
It glows under UV light.

Sorry (2023)
Handmade paper (kozo and abaca), with hospital gown and monotype inclusions. Made in Paper Studio at the Penland School of Craft.
The base sheet was made with a deckle box technique. The kozo sheet laid over the top was a double couched sheet but still ended up with a pretty big hole in it. "Sorry".

#Miniature Monday
Bayad : the story of a trip to the Philippines to discover why there is no recorded history of papermaking in that country.
This is part of a series focusing on a small fraction of the lovely artists books by Peter and Donna Thomas!
As is the case with many traditional crafts, it can be hard to find written information about the background of papermaking in some countries. This is true in the Philippines, compounded by the fact that "Spanish colonists destroyed many of the country's famous bamboo papyrus scrolls that documented some of the earliest written accounts of Filipino history. And, as one of the Philippines' most notable hand papermakers Nida Dumsang states in The History of Hand Papermaking in the Philippines, "...historians have found it difficult to piece together facts because there are only the scantiest written records of that era."" --review in Hand Papermaking, Winter 2006. Peter and Donna Thomas's book, The history of paper making in the Philippines sought to fill some of those gaps.
This mini tells the story of that larger book, exploring the background, research and writing which started with the visit of Nida Dumsang for a workshop.
Peter and Donna Thomas are "book artists from Santa Cruz, CA. They work both collaboratively and individually; letterpress printing, hand-lettering and illustrating texts, making paper, and hand binding both fine press and artists’ books." They have made over 100 limited edition books, often with Peter making the paper, and Donna doing the illustrations.
Check out more of Donna and Peter's books at Uiowa here.
