something that strikes me about joyland vs many other films centering trans women, is that biba’s story is one that interweaves with various cisgender women -- while it does have scenes showing her community, which is notably a place she is happy and safe and able to let her guard down, her actual story stands in comparison to other cis women, who likewise are comparable to each other. she’s not the “othered” woman to their “normative” woman, she’s a woman, whose perspective is relevant to a story largely about women

the part where her being transgender is important (and it is important!), is that she has taken the necessary steps in life to be freely herself, and this has come at great cost, but it’s also working. she knows the pain that comes with that and we see a lot of it in the movie itself, but she’s definitely also got the joy that comes from a certain kind of freedom (the freedom of creating a new reality after everything is gone)

so in that sense, the main contrast of her as “trans woman” to their “non-trans woman,” is that it’s given her the opportunity for joy precisely because the margins -- once everything has perceivably been lost -- is where that joy is to be created, whereas the other women whose stories we see are clinging to what scraps they have. they aren’t happy, not because they’re women, but because the little bits that they do have in the society in which they function, are things they’re too afraid to lose to stand up for what they want 

nucchi at first appears to be happy as a housewife, desperate to produce a son, but she gets stripped away, bit by bit, merely as someone who can tolerate the role she has. she studied to be an interior designer, I believe it was, and it makes perfect sense, once she shares that piece of information with mumtaz. she comes into focus -- and then she’s the one who suggests that she and mumtaz leave the house together (gasp) to go to the amusement park, for their One Good Day

and mumtaz you simply see deteriorate, until she’s on the verge of doing the one thing that might help -- running away -- and then cannot go through with it. I think at least one of the reasons is that she’s wondering if maybe she can do this after all, if maybe once she tells haider that she’s pregnant something will open up, but instead the future closes in and in and in. she doesn’t manage to grab that one sliver of freedom she had (and it would have come with so much pain), and the ending starts careening at the viewer from that point onwards

the second-to-last scene, where you see haider and mumtaz talk prior to their wedding is just... oof. ouch. mumtaz :( me, sitting in this movie screaming at the screen to just get her the damned air-conditioners she wanted, at least! one thing!

and then lastly the neighbouring woman, who at first presents herself as all about that propriety, and who you then realise is at the end of what this journey is going to be. no longer useful, only a ghost, not even allowed to leave the house, and there’s no way she’ll do anything but accept this, even as she feels, deep down, there’s some way to have joy, and she even briefly offers a small fight for it, before she accepts her fate anew

in the face of all of this, biba’s is the story with the most hope, presenting out and proud transness as a gift rather than a burden that must be borne because nothing else is possible, as it often is. biba is not in a society where she’s safe, or accepted, or respected -- hell, she’s clearly the least privileged person we follow in this film -- but she is free

I have seen a few modern and classic films, but none captured the nuances of Gertrude and Hamlet's relationship like these two.

The intensity of their Oedipal conflict manifested as a tumultuous love between mother and son - full of pain, betrayal, and anger! Utterly unparalleled, so exquisite!

1.Sardar Udham

Length: 2h 42minute

Genre: Thriller, Crime, Biographical

Plot: Indian Revolutionary Udham Singh wants to avenge those lost in Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. 

Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Banita Sandhu, Amol Parashar, Kristy Averton, Shaun Scott.

Notes from me: The acting done by Vicky Kaushal as the titular character is absolutely phenomenal and just tugs at your heartstrings, also the last 40 minutes are absolutely tear jerking.

2. Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na

Length: 2h 35 minutes 

Genre: Rom-Com, Slice-of-life

Plot: BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS!!! Two bestfriends Jai and Aditi are obliviously in love with each other until they start dating other people.

Starring: Genelia D’Souza, Imran Khan, Ratna Pathak Shah, Prateik Babbar

Note: COMFORT MOVIE!!!! I love absolutely everything, the connection between the friends, THE SOUNDTRACK!! 

3. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Length: 2h 30 minutes

Genre: Road trip, Comedy

Plot: Three friends Imran, Arjun and Kabir go on a road trip across Spain, before Kabir’s wedding and find imperfect flaws in their life, make decisions with the help of these friends and guide their way through life

Starring: Farhan Akhtar, Hritik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Katrina Kaif

Note: love!! once again a comfort movie, leaves you feeling refreshed and wanting to go on a cross country road trip with yout friends!

3. Haider

Length: 2h 40 minutes

Genre: Drama, Thriller, Action

Plot:  An adaptation of the Shakespearean play Hamlet set in modern day Jammu & Kashmir. Haider returns to Jammu & Kashmir to find closure for his father’s death, but the states’ politics situation overpower him.

Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan 

Note: A great movie which does not just portray Kashmir as this “beautiful picturesque scenery” but the harsh political reality of this fractured state, which is not easy to portray. This, in my opinion is one of the best acting performance of Shahid Kapoor’s career. Tabu as always SHINES (she should be stored in a gold vault istg), Kay Kay Menon steals the show with his perfectly sinister portrayal of Haider’s Uncle.    

4. Kapoor & Sons

Length: 2h 12 minutes

Genre: Drama, Slice-Of-Life

Plot: Two brothers Arjun and Rahul return home to Conoor to visit their ailing Grandfather. During this stay the entire family discovers just how dysfunctional and fractured their relationships are. 

Starring: Fawad Khan, Sidarth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah, Rajat Kapoor

Note: Albeit a slow 20 minutes in the start, the movie really engages you and makes you uncover the aspects of the Kapoor family with them and makes you realise just how broken and tired of the façade of happiness they truly are.

6. Guzaarish

Length: 2 hours

Genre: Drama, Romance 

Plot: Former renowned magician Ethan Mascarenhas is quadriplegic and expresses his guzaarish (request) for euthanasia.  

Starring: Hritik Roshan, Aishwariya Rai, Aditya Roy Kapur

7. Andhadhun

Length: 2h 18 minutes

Genre: Thriller, Crime, Comedy

Plot: Akash, a piano player pretending to be visually-impaired, unwittingly becomes entangled in a number of problems as he witnesses the murder of a former film actor

Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, Radhika Apte, Manav Vij

Note: TABU!!! Her portrayal of Simi, the wife of the film actor is so good and entrancing. Ayushmann in the film’s climax shines. The plot twists are chefs kiss.

Best Shakespeare Adaptation

since the 1600s, people have been rewriting shakespeare and writing spinoffs in good, bad, and frankly just kind of insane ways. today, they will compete until only one is left standing!

during the poll craze i ran a lot of brackets and had fun, but ended up with a couple spare blogs i ended up having to delete, so i'm running this one off my main.

q. is this a tournament for productions or adaptations?

a. adaptations! stuff that changes dialogue or medium (beyond play -> movie) or takes a really new spin on it! west side story counts, romeo and juliet (1996) doesn't.

q. will there be a limit on contestants?

i'll cut it at 64 or 32 depending on how many submissions we get! if we get a lot of adaptations of a few plays and less of others, i won't cut any of them out, but i'll make some of them face off in round one

q. are you biased?

yes. fortinbras sweep. i've been reading 'these violent delights' too and it's pretty good. oh and can't forget haider, and requiem of the rose king is an all timer... basically, yes i really like rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead, but i have much room in my heart

q. is it most best portrayal/analysis, or best on its own merits?

a. a little of both, but mostly the latter

q. does [x thing] (that's pretty different than the original inspiration) count?

a. if it is common knowledge that it's shakespeare inspired

It's hard being in a relationship with one so extroverted.

Even when Timothee puts on his shy/awkward front, he drips with charisma that everyone adores.

You wish it came that easy for you.

At first, when the two of you started dating, it was easy to stay out of the spotlight, and Timothee made it to where you didn't have to be.

He'd secretly visit you at night, making sure no one saw him entering or leaving your apartment.

He'd wear a hoodie, mask and sunglasses so that even if he was seen, he wasn't seen.

But as his popularity grew, the demand for more public appearances did as well.

His presence was needed, sometimes demanded at events.

And he wanted you at his side.

"Please, y/n. I need you there with me," he'd say.

You weren't used to these types of appearances. They made you nervous. They made your stomach flip...and not in the good way.

Timothee grabbed your hand, spinning you in a circle.

The cameras clicked rapidly, and fans screamed louder as you twirled in your dress, revealing an entire white rose hidden in the pleats of your black satin gown, completely hidden before.

Somehow, he made you the center of attention.

And somehow it wasn't painful.

Then he kissed you.

Like, really kissed you.

Fans screamed louder, wanting to know your name and if you were dating Timothee Chalamet.

Co-chairing & attending the met gala with timothee...

Inspired by the fashionista couple Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively both co-chairing this year and you two as a couple with Timo would not disappoint either

This year’s theme was Guided Age- you both poured over even the finest details from the colour scheme, fabric, the accessories like hats, shoes and the historical period you’d be referencing

You two binged the show Gilded Age on HBO the past few weeks leading up to it while having meetings with designers like Haider Ackermann and some ateliers/historians familiar with the time period

But at the same time you wanted a touch of the modern age and not just a historical recreation; you’d reference the spirit of the time period but have a modern twist to it

Compared to the white navy look he had last year (you couldn’t come last year as you were in locked in taping for one of your movies), you were thinking of either gold or a little bit of red velvet

You could either go like a pastel, light colours like creams or lavender/pale blue but you wanted to go all out with the extravagance of the era

Timmy wore a red velvet suit/long trench coat to the tailoring of the era, with gold linkcuffs, gold jewelry scattered throughout his suit on his pockets, etc

He wore a golden inner vest and brown tie alongside plain black pants and black dress shoes; he brought a top hat and a wooden brown cane with him too (y'all were on the fence if the one eyed glasses was too much? Up to you)

Meanwhile you wore an off the shoulder, low cut golden dress with a red velvet bodice with gold ribbons and jewels embroidered into it; you were loaned jewelry from the jewelry house you were ambassador to

You had a string of pearl chokers and then had ruby and gold necklaces stringing down your torso

Your hair was put up into an updo with intricate curls as you had a fancy hat reminiscent of the hats the Royals would wear at like royal derby races, referencing what was worn at the time

You felt a sense of pride that you came with the love of your life at one of the finest fashion fundraising events of the season; you both loved and really cared about fashion and to do it with your significant other was extremely rewarding

The cheers and gasps that would follow everytime you both would walk, and this only heightened as you ascended the famous Met stairs

He escorted and guided you up the stairs with a helpful arm just in case you needed it, especially with how heavy the petticoat of the dress would weigh you down

You wouldn’t miss the prideful smile he would have as he circles an arm around your waist, like loudly telling the world that you’re his, and he is yours.

You’re both usually dead silent and protective of your privacy as a couple; confirming in interviews but giving no other info than “yes, we are in a loving and committed relationship” so this is your big first debut on the red carpet together 

The pride that you ‘chose’ each other even though so many other amazing, talented and wealthy people in the industry - you’ll always lead yourselves back together 

So when it was announced you would co-chair together, you were slightly afraid but almost relieved that you didn’t care what others said and could be happily, openly together

Once you got in, you had an amazing time, indulging in the luxurious, fine dining, the champagne, the cocktail foods before hitting the dance floor 

Inspired by your costumes, you both would dance overdramatically to a waltz like those period dramas, causing many in the crowd to laugh

Not pressured by the paparazzi or wandering eyes, you both eventually split off to talk to the other attendees for the night and garnering compliments from them left and right 

Blake especially holds on to your hand, someone you see like an older sister, and compliments you to the high heavens and how glad she was to be able to co-chair with you and both your significant others

She comments how much she sees the genuine love you share with Timmy and its reminiscent of her bond with Ryan and you can’t hide your blush, which she jokingly teases you for 

You and Timmy come home from the after parties, drunk on liquid courage, and high on the adrenaline and joy of being together, through thick and thin, behind the cameras in private or at one of the most prestigious red carpet events in the industry.
