The cabbage I grew from seed! It’s a first and has been a long time garden goal. But, I am always learning and that is the great thing about gardening. • My two contributions for the new community made Growing Food Ideas ebook are: 1. During the colder months there is less grass and green pick growing for our chickens to graze on. To add variety to their grain based diet we grow mustard greens, kale, cold climate herbs and lettuce for them. Year to year we let these plants self seed and it costs us nothing. 2. Our elderly friend keeps a very small fruit and vegetable garden now and shares her abundance with us. We grow extra seedlings, fruit and vegetables to share with her. We also keep a couple of extra hens to share the extra eggs with her. • Keep sending your ideas in for the free ebook. Just before the quarantine hit we settled into building a new challenge. The kids in the hood helped by watching intently as we built up the new garden beds, they helped us fill with soil and then silently whispered words as seeds were planted ( as if they were about to wake them seeds up from a nap ). Now the top bunk bed is showing great signs of life. Along the edges beans and peas were planted intermingled with radishes and my favorite edible flower the nasturtiums. The lower beds are bursting with growth but if they don’t hurry up the beans will soon flip down and shade them out! 😂 good thing shade lovers were planted below! This week we're trying to stay focused on mental health and hobbies. Outlets are important to productivity and positivity so we're looking for ways to be creative, get physical or just find a place to be calm. For us that's being outside and eventually someday will include lots of gardening. Right now our little patio gets no sun after 12 so we have one sad Charlie Brown tomato plant, with the appropriate one bulbous tomato.
