Seeing Anna made Dahlia feel as though she walked directly into a brick wall. She knew that there was a good chance of running into people from her past upon moving to Lunar Cove, and she thought she’d prepared herself for that, but Anna was different. Their past wasn’t complicated, they were good friends many years ago. They’d learned so much from each other, it was one of the friendships Dahlia valued the most in the many years she roamed the Earth. It was the way things ended that hurt. Dahlia’s time was up, she needed to move on, and it was always easier to cut all ties rather than attempting to say goodbye. She wondered if Anna understood, hopefully her departure wasn’t too painful for her.

The tone in which Anna responded to her question told her that she did seem to hold a grudge. Understandably, she had every right to be upset with Dahlia. Her head simply nodded. She didn’t want to open her mouth and make things any worse between them. Dahlia had already ruined their friendship once, she didn’t want to ruin the potential chance to build it back up again.

“The human?” Dahlia wasn’t able to hold in the soft gasp that fell from her. “Poor woman, she still had many years left.” The death of humans always saddened her. Their lives were so short, and it was worse when they were cut even shorter. She stood next to Anna silently for another moment, eyes fixed on the large window, watching the caos outside. Finally, she turned to her old friend, a gentle smile on her lips. “It’s very nice to see you, Anna. Unfortunate that we’re meeting in the middle of a tragedy, but I’m truly happy to see you’re well.”

“You have to pay for that!”

The voice came from behind the cash register, and Anna looked up from over her lollipop. She raised a single eyebrow at the young man working the shop tonight, and he paled under the stare. Anna popped the candy from her mouth. “Put it on my tab.” She looked back to Dahlia. When she had last seen the vampire, Anna had been a very different woman, still prone to smile rather than smirk, to seek out relationships for companionship and friendship, not for what they could provide her. But many things had changed over the decades, starting with Anna’s patience and sense of comradery. 

Unfortunately for her, Dahlia had a face that was very hard to stay mad at. Unluckily for Dahlia, Anna had also become incredibly and stupidly stubborn over the years. Though, when she’d imagined seeing Dahlia again, she’d never thought the first thing they’d discuss would be another town murder. Then again, she’d never imagined seeing Dahlia again at all. She had written her off as simply another ghost of her past. “Oh, yes, I’m doing very well, thank you,” said Anna, her tone cheery only on the surface. “But what brings you to town, Darling? You’ve been here an awful long time now.” She might have avoided speaking to Dahlia since she came back into town but that didn’t mean she hadn’t seen her. “Surely, you have somewhere to run off to. Or have you already exhausted your travels of the world?”
