Rat’s Pond: Abutting the picturesque patio at Rat’s Restaurant (named one of 100 most scenic restaurants in the US), is the Rat’s Pond. Approached from the sculpture park, guests first encounter a small cascading waterfall fed by the Pond, with a view that reveals the charming French-inspired restaurant and surrounding horticulture and sculpture, including Philip Grausman’s Leucantha and David Hostetler’s Summertime Lady. The pond, built in 1999, is home to a variety of colorful Koi fish, and an ideal environment for the water lilies, iris, and other plantings contained within the water. Notice also the countless colorful blooms planted near the patio as well as weeping willows and weeping cherry trees framing the far shoreline. GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE IS A MUSEUM, SCULPTURE GARDEN, AND ARBORETUM WHERE ART AND NATURE ARE ALWAYS AT PLAY. Outdoors, nearly 300 contemporary sculptures are sited across 42 landscaped acres. Indoors, temporary exhibitions from established and emerging artists are featured in six galleries. Engaging and educational programs for all ages are offered year-round, and may include lectures from top minds, hands-on workshops, tours, concerts, and performances. Grounds For Sculpture was founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson. It opened in 1992 on the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds and was a natural extension of its predecessor, The Johnson Atelier. Hundreds of artists studied and produced work at the Atelier, and Johnson saw the potential of the neighboring bygone fairgrounds as a place where artwork could be sited within the landscape, and visitors could delight in discovering contemporary sculpture. Grounds For Sculpture was the absolute move today and I'm immensely grateful I was able to share one of my favorite places with one of my best friends. It was her first time going (thank you for encouraging me to get out of the house) and we both decided to sit at a sort of crafting thing they were having and make something. The one I made is on the left and the materials are clay, twine, edible paper, flowers, rocks, and charred bone. I wasn't specifically going for an aesthetic but was told it felt primal.
