Still processing the horrible news from Edmonton that my very dear friend Ben Alway has left this world. He was many things to many people, and a truly charismatic person who made an impression on you whether you liked it or not. He was complicated and sometimes drove me nuts, but he was also a devoted father whom I spent many years going to museums, parks, and K Days with while our kids were young. We worked together, hung out together, and busted each other’s balls mercilessly. He could really annoy me but also really make me laugh and even be incredibly kind- and his legendary dance moves will never be forgotten. I’m gonna miss you, Laser Ben, aka Greyballs, and I’m grateful I knew you. I can’t believe you’re gone. 💔 . . #laserben #greyballs #thelasershuffle #secondskintattooremoval #oldfriend #gutted #edmonton #happymemories #platoniclifepartner #redemption @removery_secondskin (at Edmonton, Alberta) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqKL84HuV8o/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hackers (1995)
----
Dade Murphy hacks into a local television station… infiltrates the station's broadcasting system… and he manipulates a robotic mechanism responsible for changing video cassettes used to air programs… then another mysterious hacker enters the scene and Dade and the unknown hacker engage in a virtual battle for dominance.
----
Dueling HACKERS 🔐💻 IS OUR Digital LIFE on the LINE? 🚨👁️
Yes it could very well be...
Our digital lives, often entrusted to large corporations, may face significant risks… in a recent cyber incident in 2023, two hacker groups claimed responsibility for an alleged attack on a major corporation. One hacker group asserted that they successfully compromised the target's systems and offered stolen data for sale.
----
The movie presents a stylized and exaggerated portrayal of hacking culture, where the young hackers manipulate technology to outsmart and outmaneuver law enforcement officials. The film showcases a perception that law enforcement, at least in the context of the movie, is often portrayed as being behind or clueless in understanding the world of hacking.
And let's remember the Greyball incident: Uber developed the Greyball software to determine if a user requesting an Uber ride was a potential law enforcement officer or regulator. The program used various data points, such as location information, device data, credit card details, and social media profiles, to identify individuals who might pose a threat to Uber's operations. When the program identified a potential threat, it would show a different version of the Uber app to that user. This altered version of the app would display fake cars on the map, making it difficult for the user to locate a real Uber driver.
Additionally... Greyball would provide false information about the location of Uber vehicles or show no cars available at all.
The intention behind Greyball was to obstruct and evade regulators and law enforcement officials who were attempting to enforce taxi and transportation regulations in cities where Uber faced legal challenges.
So, the Greyball incident, which occurred in the real world, involved Uber using technology to identify and circumvent law enforcement officials and regulators actively trying to enforce transportation regulations… it's a real-world application of tactics that mirror the fictional portrayal we see in the 1995 movie Hackers.

Coding Ethics: The Responsibilities of Developers in Today's World
Tumblr media
In our tech-driven world, where lines of code shape the digital landscape, the ethical responsibilities of software developers take center stage. Imagine this: the code powering your favorite apps, websites, and digital tools is not just a set of instructions but a reflection of ethical choices made by developers. It's a realm where right and wrong are not mere theoretical concepts but practical decisions that impact users globally.
A myriad of ethical frameworks and codes have emerged to guide developers in their quest to create software that not only functions flawlessly but also upholds values we hold dear. Organizations like the IEEE-CS/ACM Joint Task Force on Software Engineering Ethics and the Computer Ethics Institute have put forth standards, akin to ethical commandments, framing the conduct of developers in this digital age.
Consider the case studies that delve into the ethical dilemmas faced by developers. From the intricacies of privacy in the Big Brother Spyware scenario to the real-world gender bias in software development highlighted in "For Girls Only," these cases shed light on the complex terrain developers navigate daily. The International Standard for Professional Software Development and Ethical Responsibility provides a compass for analysis in these scenarios, emphasizing honesty, integrity, and fairness—cornerstones of responsible coding.
Unfortunately, not all developers adhere to these ethical standards, leading to headline-grabbing breaches. Take the Uber Greyball tool, a creation designed to outsmart authorities, or the Volkswagen Emission Scandal, where intentional programming deceived regulators about emissions. These incidents underline the importance of ethical behavior, as software can either empower or deceive, depending on the choices made by developers.
Zooming in on the responsibilities of developers, it becomes evident that ethical considerations extend beyond the confines of coding. In the case of Zenefits Insurance Violations, even the design of a browser extension played a role in allowing brokers to falsify completion of required training. It's not just about lines of code; it's about the impact of those codes on people's lives.
As we explore the ever-evolving landscape of technology, it's crucial for developers to embrace a trustworthy coder's pledge. This isn't about embarking on a philosophical journey; it's about making practical decisions that prioritize users' well-being. Whether it's the Patriot Missile Case, emphasizing effective design, or the Therac-25 case, highlighting the dangers of software-based controls on life-threatening systems, the ethical compass guides developers through uncharted territories.
Coding ethics is not a buzzword but a practical guide for developers shaping the digital world. As we witness the incredible power of software, we must advocate for ethical choices that prioritize transparency, security, and fairness. It's not just a matter of crafting code; it's a responsibility that extends to the very heart of our interconnected digital society.

Once Uber is in a market, it continues to clash with and ignore regulators. The company developed a tool called Greyball which used data from the app to identify city officials and ensure they couldn’t book a car to scrutinize the service. This was used in Portland in 2014 when the city was carrying out a sting operation against the startup, which was operating without a permit. Uber said it was denying ride requests to users who violated its terms of service. The mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, saw it differently: “I am very concerned that Uber may have purposefully worked to thwart the city’s job to protect the public.”

his equal in the light. time and time again, he had been warned of the one who would become his match in the force. every training session, every success and celebration, every failure and punishment     it was to live up to the challenge he would inevitably face. and her name was rey. a part of him knew from their first meeting, despite the fact that he wanted to ignore the facts all together. a girl with the name of no one; a scavenger from a wasteland was to challenge his very bloodline and the destiny it had bestowed upon him?
as brown hues stare upon the wreckage before him, he stands in silence. ben solo kylo ren cannot tell what emotions flash across her features in that moment. is it horror or relief? one thing is certain, he senses the rage that flows through her ( though he is not certain it is directed at him this time ). that is all he needs.
“and how did it feel?” he inquires without hesitation, even knowing that the question could irritate her further. it became clear to him that it did not take much to set her off. it was something he normally avoided. “rey,” ben speaks softly, not allowing her the chance to reply to his previous query. “this is what i wanted you to understand. the jedi nor the sith could help you harness your power. they subdue it. tapping into your abilities does not equate to losing control, that is only what you have been taught to believe.”
Tumblr media
“... It felt...” Rey was struggling to find the answer herself, and looked over at him when he continued on, grateful for the slight distraction in that. The silence that followed his words was palpable, and she forced herself to say something, anything to break it. Yet, did she honestly have it in her to believe anything she’d say, much less what he was talking about? Her mind was trying to catch up to what her body had just done, and that was actually lay harm to someone she’s cared for. There was so much she wanted to figure out, but right now she felt so lost, and it pained her to think that she could do this to anyone else. Her ability, her use of the Force, all she had wanted it for was to protect. Now she was unable to decide if she could even do that much with it. Finally, she was able to speak, able to clear her head enough to ask him. “Then what am I to believe? If everything’s been a lie, then what am I to do? I don’t want to hurt anyone...” Or was that a lie to herself, given how easily that power came to her, and far quicker than her wishing to only aide in any conflict. That was raw energy rippling through the air, creating flames and explosions. All of it was from her fingertips. Am I the monster? That conflicting thought had her brows furrowing hard, and she pointed an accusatory finger his way. “I am not you! You should’ve let me save him! Why did you--” Even she couldn’t finish her lashing words, as it truly wasn’t his fault for what just happened. Rey was just wishing it could be his fault, wishing to send the blame on anyone but herself, but even she couldn’t do that. | @greybalance |

If users were identified as being linked to law enforcement, Uber Greyballed them by tagging them with a small piece of code that read ‘Greyball’ followed by a string of numbers. When someone tagged this way called a car, Uber could scramble a set of ghost cars in a fake version of the app for that person to see, or show that no cars were available. Occasionally, if a driver accidentally picked up someone tagged as an officer, Uber called the driver with instructions to end the ride.

Uber 在倫敦將會被停業
Uber 在倫敦將會被停業:「Uber has license to operate in London revoked」、「London regulator announces Uber ban」、「Uber London loses licence to operate」。 更精確的說是不再續發 license,舊的 license 只到 9/30: Transport for London (TfL), which operates public transport in the capital, has made the decision not to renew the app-based taxi’s license in the city. The license was renewed in May, but for a period of only five…
