For those who don’t know, recently it’s been announced that Singapore is going to repeal a colonial-era law criminalising sex between men - Section 377A. It was one of the big goals in queer activism country, and now, we’ve done it! Sex between men is getting decriminalised!
There has been conservative backlash at this decision, and the government is also amending the constitution to protect the definition of marriage to be between a man and a woman to appease religious groups. But though this wasn’t a complete victory, and there’s still lots of work to be done, I’m still glad that we did it! Our queer activists achieved one of their big goals! Holy shit, I’m really happy right now for that, even though I know the fight is far from over.
I hope that queer Singaporeans stay safe in the upcoming weeks. Take care of yourself and each other. Keep hope alive. It’s slow progress, like with anything, but it’s still progress. And though I know the fight is far from over, we will get there someday. Stay strong all!

Whatever your views, I urge you to watch the entire proceedings (this is only day one). This is your responsibility as a voting member of your country, a taxpayer, and a person who, at the very least, values the rule of law.

...[P]ower corrupts. When you are in charge of a multi-million dollar company, people are less likely to tell you “no” and have no real way to hold you accountable. Price had the power to call a meeting to “ridicule an underperforming employee.” The employee did not have the power to call a meeting to ridicule Dan Price. One of the ways that human beings’ worst instincts can be kept in check is by making sure they do not have the power to abuse others without consequence. We maintain a pattern of moral conduct in part by being called out by others when we act like assholes. If nobody is able to tell the guy at the top that he’s acting like an asshole, he will probably continue to think of himself as kind and benevolent. The same dynamics occur in dictatorships—people who may have begun life as normal or idealistic are simply given too much unaccountable power and are never contradicted.
This is one reason why capitalism is not going to “have a heart.” One problem with a system in which workers sell their labor to capitalists is that the capitalists have too much power over the workers. They might bump wages up, but ultimately the world needs not to be ruled by men who can get away with anything. According to the accusations detailed in the Times, based on dozens of interviews as well as police reports, Dan Price’s fame allowed him to get away for years with acts of physical assault. It is a familiar story. The idea of capitalism with a heart is indeed a fairy tale. It won’t happen, because capitalism is predicated on a division between a class of owners and a class of workers, and the difference in power allows abuse to flourish. We do not need generous and caring rich people who maintain their decision-making power. We need to redistribute that decision-making power. The Dan Price story provided the illusion that all we need are better bosses. While it is true, and important, to note that the rich could redistribute their wealth if they chose, and their high status is a choice rather than a product of the laws of economics, it is also the case that “more Dan Prices” will not make the world better. As we have seen, such people are often simply self-aggrandizing and even abusive in private. The only solution is to expropriate them.

Anyways if you live in US and. Have a phone number. Call the UN ambassador at 212-415-4000 (opt. 6) and urge for a ceasefire vote. The UN Security Council is ready on basically all fonts to vote for it but ofc america is threatening to veto, and as one of the 5 permanent member states they have that power.

You have been exposed, you terrorist state of Israel.
No matter what crocodile tears you now you use and pay billions to platforms like hulu for your propaganda ads, the world specially the younger generation now knows what you have been doing for years.
It’s the beginning of the end of your decades long atrocities.
Rachel corrie would be so proud of this ( the American activist killed by israeli bulldozer in Palestine years ago)

a really good post on the OTW's reserves and whether that is or isn't sufficient to support paid positions, and that also brings up the question of whether paid positions are what's needed right now. but yeah. mainly: a very relevant compilation of how the OTW has addressed the issue of the budget surplus. some good discussion in the comments, too!

It's always nice to see big corporations and wealthy people blaming us regular, poorer people, of the current drought. You use too much water in your toilet, you use too much water in your shower, you eat too much red meat which is an industry that uses tons of litres of water!
Meanwhile: the government is not taking a single effective measure against climate change, electric companies emptying reservoirs a few months ago, golf courses lush green, all swimming pools in hotels and villas full to the top, big agriculture companies cultivating avocados (each piece needs around 600L of water), etc etc etc

ROBINSON: …But there’s what is sometimes called the “techno-utopianism” of Silicon Valley, which often you posit as totally unrealistic—we’re going to merge with machines and upload our consciousness and do things we don’t know how to do.
But these other things you cover, which we do know how to do, are utopian, crazy, and unrealistic.
GHODSEE: Exactly. It’s like the Coalition for Radical Life Extension, these people out in Silicon Valley who are basically trying to be immortal.
If you’re talking about universal health care, that’s totally utopian, but immortality is totally feasible. It’s a really weird double standard that tech bros and billionaires and Saudi princes get to dream up cities in the desert or like this new plan for a utopian city in Solano County in Northern California, but the rest of us are just going to be stuck with a housing crisis and homelessness. Why can’t ordinary people dream in a way that imagines a better future, rather than just constantly ceding this territory of blue sky thinking to the tech bros and the billionaires and the Saudi princes who have the means, at least theoretically, to realize those dreams?

idk how this is working but it is so i'll be quick: they've cut off access to most of the net in ir*n and they're going to wait for the news buzz to die down before squashing the protests here for good. please don't let the news coverage die down. don't forget us! and this is very important: don't stop talking about us.
the people here, the university students and kids especially, are being so brave. you wouldn't believe what they're defying in order to be heard, from the govt but also from society, maybe even their own families. they're in the majority (alongside the labourers and teachers and truck drivers and retirees) but they're young and unarmed and without authority. be their voice until we can be our own: speak about the people on our streets, the girls asking not for banning scarves but for the freedom to choose without being afraid of violence from the police, the famine and droughts and energy crises, the economy leading to children and senior citizens digging through garbage to survive, the govt indifferent and greedy looking down on the people they're supposed to represent, the wars they start with money that the country needs for infrastructure and trade, how sanctions hurt only the civilians and have led to a viciously dangerous medicine shortage.
we don't fight now just for our women, although we look to them first and foremost for leadership in this new hope that we have for a different country. help us by speaking and tweeting about our issues, help us by telling your governments that sanctions kill the innocent and make no difference to our overlords who'll sell what they want on the black market, help us by naming the terrorists in charge of this country for the criminals and murderers that they are.
as always i love you all. this country has been bound and brought to its knees for too long. help us now. i hope to be able to welcome you to visit me in my beautiful city with its warmhearted residents very soon.

really feel like I’m entering controversial territory rn so I’ve created a sideblog, but…
I personally think why so many people are afraid to take a stand on the genocide is because they’ve been taught that Israel means the Jewish population, and they’re unwilling to take a stand against them
and you know what? That’s really not their fault. It’s what they’ve been taught. And since that mindset was taught, they CAN be convinced otherwise, someone just needs to be willing to show them and educate them about the truth
I know that standing in neutral territory doesn’t really help Palestine in any way, and shaming people for it definitely will NOT make them support Palestine.
this entire genocide can seem like a really complicated issue to those who know nothing about it. I know it’s too late into the genocide for people to be completely in the blind, but still.. just give it a try, maybe?
I’m saying this because I managed to convince my entire family and half my friends to boycott Israel. While I was convincing them, they said the only reason they haven’t made a stand is because of the Jewish population.
anyways this take has come from a post I saw which basically made a list of several celebrities who should be cancelled bc they have stayed silent or remain in neutral territory, but honestly… just try to teach them about the truth? Just try it?
but this post isn’t about defending celebrities.. just don’t shame people who stand in neutral territory, because there’s a high chance that they’ve been taught that Israel = Jewish population. Don’t shame them
it’s a common misconception. and it can take a while for a person to see the truth. demeaning them for not knowing will NOT make them support Palestine in the long run
if they haven’t been taught otherwise, it does not make them bad people
