My Peak Television Journey *Grand Crew*
I am very disappointed that Grand Crew was canceled. I wasn’t as excited about the second season as I was the first, but that may have more to do with how I watched it than the quality. (I watched the first season out of order, starting in the middle and then binging earlier episodes. I watched the second season in order as it aired. So I had less of the sense of excitement of finding something you almost missed, but would still say all the episodes are good.)
I like getting to see Echo Kellum as a leading man, the hopeless romantic Noah. It felt like he was underused for much of the second season. I loved his “Let’s do it for Sax Daddy” line delivery in the premiere. and where he was at the end of the season was a decent way to wrap the series.
I like getting to see Nicole Byer as I am also someone unlikely to watch Nailed It! She played Noah’s sister Nicky and she and Kellum have great sibling chemistry. One of the scenes that occasionally pops into my head is just them hanging out. and I enjoyed her wild dating life and commitment phobia, as well as seeing her as a real estate agent.
While I wish they had more A plot stories for Kellum’s Noah, I do have to give my respect to Aaron Jennings as Anthony often the series’s second leading man. He and Faith (played by Grasie Mercedes) had a lovely, if short lived romance. I also like how into accounting he was and his party persona of King TUT.
In general Faith could have used more air time. she was written out in the third to last episode of the series (her character moved cross country to open a second location of the wine bar in which the characters hang out) but she also missed other episodes. It left me with the impression that she couldn’t really bring the laughs, even though when she was there she regularly brought the laughs.
Carl Tart played Sherm and was frequently the funniest character on the show. With his endless start up businesses  and most sensitive palate he was always getting me to laugh out loud. I wanted him and Nicky to hook up at some point. A road cut short.
But maybe my favorite character on the show was Wyatt, played by Justin Cunningham. As the only married member of the group, he is something of an eccentric sounding board. (If the series had continued I would hope that his wife, Kristen played by Maya Lynne Robinson, would become a regular part of the ensemble.  I always enjoyed when she showed up.) Proof that marriage only change’s someone so much. An artist/house husband enthusiastic “plant dad” he always had a different perspective that somehow made everything feel more complete. I’m sad to see this ensemble go.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Grand Crew’ Season 2 On NBC, With More Funny Wine-Fueled Hang Outs
One of the great things about the hang-out sitcom is that, even when its not firing on all cylinders, there are at least some storylines or b-plots that work in a particular episode. Season 1 of Grand Crew clicked more often than not, which gave us a lot of hope for Season 2. Does the new season live up to those expectations? GRAND CREW SEASON 2: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT? Opening Shot: After a recap…

Hey, your old bts posts reminded me - one of the actresses who played a pregnant lady in 1x07, Grasie Mercedes, has a podcast where oliver was a guest on it called "Not [blank] enough" and oliver's episode is "episode 12: not talented enough" (1 of 3 he's done available on spotify that I'm aware of). Not sure if you've listened or if most people new to the fandom are aware but it's definitely worth a listen (as is the one he did with national fire radio as he talks a lot about the show with real firefighters) 😊
Yes! I've listened to majority of the podcast he's done. They're all great listens.
Not (Blank) Enough - 12. Oliver Stark : Not Talented Enough Spotify - Apple Music
Imposter syndrome, white privilege, and body image are just a few things Oliver Stark discusses with Grasie Mercedes in an intimate conversation that they titled, Not Talented Enough.
National Fire Radio - The Size Up Episode 7: Oliver Stark Spotify - Apple Music
On this episode of The Size Up, Pip is joined by Rob Ridley from National Fire Radio. They welcome actor Oliver Stark, from the Fox Drama 9-1-1. Oliver plays firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley on the show, which is now going into the 4th season. Pip and Oliver met just over a year ago, when Pip learned of Oliver's support for 5-5-5 Fitness. The guys spend some time talking about how the actors on the show, first priority is to portray emergency responders as regular people who choose to do a difficult job. Listen in to learn more about the show, Oliver's life and how he has been acclimating to this new normal.
Shut Up and Listen with Heather Matarazoo - Oliver Stark Spotify - Apple Music
In this week's episode, Heather speaks with Oliver Stark (9-1-1) about working through his fear as an actor, his experience growing up in London and why willingness is so important.
Strong Female Characters - "What we watch should be a reflection of how we live our life." Spotify - Apple Music (Oliver joins at 40 minutes)
Cher & Preeti talk about midlife crisis earrings, the lack of female protagonists in video games, and have a thoughtful conversation with Oliver Stark (Into the Badlands, 911) about feminism and allyship.

Carl Tart
Wine and the Grand Crew
By Jay S. Jacobs
It’s sort of the ideal working arrangement; a whole group of friends hanging out at a wine bar, joking with each other, philosophizing about life and trading stories over glasses of merlot, pinot grigio, or chardonnay.
Comedian, actor and writer Carl Tart is living that dream on the new NBC series Grand Crew.
In the series, a group of friends including Tart, Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, Justin Cunningham, Aaron Jennings and Grasie Mercedes share the Los Angeles night life in a wine bar named Cru. They share their lives and experiences and in jokes and deal with the complications of real life.
The series was created by Brooklyn Nine-Nine veterans Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Gore. Tart worked on the writing staff of that series. Tart has worked as a writer on other shows as well, including Mad TV. He is also currently doing a voice over role on the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. And he is a part of the popular LA improv group The Big Team.
We recently got together on Zoom with Tart to discuss Grand Crew, wine, Star Trek and the finer aspects of roasting.
Tumblr media
What was it about Grand Crew that made you want to be a part of it?
A job is a job. Of course I want to be a part of it. (laughs) One of the bigger draws to this one is that it's a family affair. It’s really a collaboration. Me and Phil Augusta Jackson have been friends for a very long time. About a decade, about 10 years. Dan Gore was my boss [when] I was writing on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as well. Then once Nicole [Byer] was signed on, it was just like, “Man, I got to figure out a way to get in here.” Also it was a weird place to be in, because it was that thing: “Okay, my friend just sold a TV show. How cool is that? I'm happy for him.” But also, hook a brother up. He wasn't able to hook me up. I still had to audition quite a bit for it. But I'm so happy and grateful to be a part of it because it's a real family affair between the writers’ room and the cast. I’ve got so many friends, so many close friends, people who I've been collaborating with closely for the past 15 years basically.
Like you mentioned, you've done writing as well for things like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and MAD-TV. Do you have any input in your character at all? Or in the character arc or anything? Or is that something that you just leave to the writers?
That's something that I really leave to the writers. Like I said, there are people in that writers’ room who know me better than I know myself. They do a lot of good stuff. But sometimes Phil is definitely like, “Hey, if there's something that you really don't like, let me know.” There's usually nothing like that, but sometimes I go, “Hey, man, can I change the way this is said?” Or “I got a joke pitch on this. Let me try it and see if you like it.” Sometimes it makes it into the show, for sure.
Tumblr media
You said that they know you so in what ways is Sherm like you? And what are some of the ways that he different?
What Phil based this character off of, when I knew that I could play this guy, he said, “This guy didn't go to college, but he's probably the smartest guy in the room.” I'm not going to gas myself up like that. But my friends joke with me a lot, because I know a little bit about a lot of stuff. Somebody will ask a random question and I'll know the whole backstory of it. They'll be like, “How do you know that?” I went to college, but only for a year. I think that was one part of it. The kind of indignant indignity of him. My friends told me that I'm like that. Just that comic relief in the group I think I bring to it. I help it out in that way.
One cool thing about the group is like you said, you seem to be one of the smarter ones in the room. I won't say the smartest, but you're a little bit more street smart. I like the way that all the characters, they're very different and yet they work together so well. Why do you think that your group – both as characters and as actors – mesh so well?
I think it's exactly what you said. We are all different as people. We all have different interests. We all like different things. Yet, we are all such great friends. I think that's any friend group. Any friend group is going to be different people who have like-minded tendencies within that group, but definitely, different personalities, different opinions. That's what supports a fruitful friendship. I think in my opinion, you're going to argue with some of your people, but it's all love at the end of the day.
Tumblr media
I've got to admit, I don't quite see Sherm as a wine guy, though. What do you tend to drink if you were out drinking with friends?
If my kitchen wasn't dirty right now, I'd show you how much wine I got over here. The show is based off of our real friend group hanging out at a wine bar. We started going to this place around 2015, I would say. One thing that is great about that place is that they sit you down. You say okay, what do I like? I tell them what I like, and they go “Okay, let me get a couple of options for you.” Back when we first started, I would go, “Give me something fruity. I don't want that sour stuff.” I didn't grow up a wine drinker. I didn't grow up a drinker of anything. That sounds crazy! (laughs) When I became an adult, I didn't start with wine. That place that we go to they teach you about it. They say, “Look out for these notes. Look out for this. What do you taste? What do you feel when you drink it? Is it this? Is it that?” Once it becomes like a science, it becomes more fun to drink. That's how I got into it more.
In the first episode of the season at one point you said that the truth doesn't matter, it's what you want people to believe that really matters.
That’s the world we live in right now.
What would you like for people to believe about Sherm?
Believe that he's got everything in control.
Tumblr media
In the upcoming episode you're supposed to teach Wyatt all you know about roasting. What does he need to know?
There's a lot of historical elements of that. You got to teach him the hand motions. You got to teach him what to go at. What's off limits. What’s okay. All that type of stuff. There's an art to it. There's an art to the roasting with your homies. That's basically what he's teaching, the ballet of it, if you will.
Do you think that LeBron James is happy?
I do think LeBron James is happy, honestly. I hope that he is. He deserves to be happy. But I hope he's not happy after tonight's game. The Clippers play the Lakers tonight and I hope he's very upset.
Not only are you doing this show, you've also been playing a character in Star Trek: Lower Decks. What is it like to be part of such an iconic franchise like that?
I play Lieutenant Kayshon on Star Trek: Lower Decks. That's a Tamarian character. It was pulled from when Paul Winfield did it on Next Generation. It's so much fun being a part of that. People love it so much. People have come to my improv shows with puppets of the character and they want me to sign and stuff like that. It is so cool. I wish I had more of the lore with that show. I didn't really grow up watching it that often. And I'm not really into it now. But it's so much fun to do. I just have to make sure when we're recording that I'm getting the words exactly right. Because if you get something wrong, they will come after you.

Closet Chronicles: Unveiling the Fashion Choices of New Yorkers
Almost everyone knows that to blend in as a New Yorker, you must be dressed appropriately. How do you accomplish that? The closets of New Yorkers are filled with twists and turns. We will reveal the secrets behind their wardrobes including traditional white tops to classic white shirts. Versace Gianni Versace started his own label in 1978. He quickly became a fashion force. The house is renowned for its bold aesthetics, rock and roll glamour, as well as Medusa and Greca motifs. After his demise in 1997 sister Donatella Versace has kept the brand's body-conscious, sultry style. The newest collection of the Italian luxury house is continuing to showcase the bold, sexy style that earned the house its fame. Streamlined tailoring meets '90s nostalgia on statement-making ready-to-wear designs for women, men and children. The gilded embellishments adorned with the classic Versace logo and '90s-inspired footwear create a distinctly contemporary vision of Italian luxury. From a fresh perspective on the I 3 NY tee, from delicate dip-dye and high-end dad sneakers, these fashions taken from New York City prove that Versace's philosophy is still alive and alive in the Big Apple. Versace was one of the first fashion houses to use celebrity endorsements and front row seats in order to elevate fashion to the level of high-end fashion. Klein Klein was an expert narrative strategist in a city packed with famous people. Whether defining public protocols or pushing boundaries in advertising campaigns, his libidinal aspirational strength was translated into bold, bold gestures in black and gray. Photographically, Klein resembled his subjects as he captured the wild high-energy, hyperactive energy New York in rapid-fire asymmetrical images that resembled Robert Frank's infamous "The Americans." The evocative images of Christy Turlington echoed a similar viewpoint. Raf Simons and Pieter Mulier have continued Klein's vision. Simons's collections were influenced by diner uniforms and traditional suiting and his male fashions often featured a bizarre twist (see the rubber dress or Warhol knife prints). Mulier sought the pragmatism of American working-class attire in his designs for women. And he has built an impressive fan base for his brand, attracting large crowds, such as Lupita Nyong'o in front of Mahershala Ali, or Millie Bobby Brown laughing with Brooke Shields. Beene New Yorkers prefer to combine the two. They'll sport loose-fitting jeans with an elegant button-down, and then tuck it in just a bit, or they might pair an hoodie with a softly tailored cocoon coat. The key is to always add a nice accent piece, such as silk scarves or vibrantly-colored sneakers. New Yorkers are ditching skinny jeans in favor of classic straight-leg pants cargo pants, or other baggy trousers. These pants are comfy for trains, and can be dressed to wear out. Geoffrey's recent work has shown a gradual move towards a more sensual reductive. In this dress for evening, gray wool and black leather, two materials typically consigned to day- or sporty wear--combine to form an outline that evokes both bones and ribs-like shapes. Taking its cue from the architectural style of Santiago Calatrava, the design also recalls a shoulder holster through the trapezoidal design and strapping. One Dapper Street Marcel Floruss, a New York blogger, is the owner of One Dapper Street. This men's fashion blog is about street style and dapper outfits. The blog has a broad coverage, which includes Instagram as well as YouTube videos. He's also interviewed celebrities such as Grasie Mercedes, who's not your typical multi-hyphenated artist. Grasie is a performer, writer filmmaker, director, and podcaster. She's also a fashion and lifestyle influencer who has a distinct sense of fashion. She recently attended the Christian Siriano show dressed in an black sheer dress and was along with Clueless star Alicia Silverstone. Many people believe that fashion blogs are exclusively meant for women. But, there are many men who are fashion bloggers. Marcel Floruss is a German man who is a fan of menswear. One Dapper Street is his website that is aimed at changing the way people view fashion. His videos on TikTok are extremely popular and he has a large social media fan base. Credits to YouTube

grasiemercedes Film photo dump...this time from the set of (Two) Roads shot in Albuquerque, NM!
This was the film I was shooting this past weekend. The one I had the pleasure of acting in and the directorial debut of my buddy @michaeltrevino. It was an incredible time and he killed it as director.
Plus I got to play with @mkmalarkey who is not only very nice but also extremely talented. Written by @ianjfisher, a very funny man who strangers randomly call beautiful 😜! Also in the cast (and in these pics) the stunning @bregjeheinen and the lovely @robb_zbacnik.
Huge thanks to @celticheli and @mindi_coats for making me feel pretty. And to @michaeltrevino for taking the utmost care of me and my travel. You’re the best. I’m so excited for you and this film!!!
