Thanks for everyone comes to our graduate show! @goldsmithscomparts Mimicry created by Lingdong Huang and Ziwei Wu. ————————————— Mimicry is a multi-screen video installation powered by computer algorithms and inspired by mimicry in nature, the unique way of which species protect themselves by changing color and pattern in response to environment. In this experimental art piece, cameras will be recording plants in real-time, and through a genetic algorithm the color and shape of virtual insects will be generated and evolved over time, toward the ultimate goal of visually blending into the recorded background. This simulated breeding, selection, and mutation are visualized across the video monitors positioned in front of the aforementioned living plants as they progress. In addition to exploring the intersection between nature and computation, we find that this work has relevance to the human society as well, as Walter Lippmann describes it in his book Public Opinion, people construct a pseudo- environment that is a subjective, biased, and necessarily abridged mental image of the world, and to a degree, everyone’s pseudo-environment is a fiction. The setup of the installation is an homage to Nam June Paik ’s TV Garden. Paik imagined a future landscape where technology is an integral part of the natural world. We find that perspective compelling even today in 2020. I am so proud and elated to be part of @alt_d.show . What started as a way to build the show that we deserve turned into making new friends and learning so much from each other along the way. Also got some lovely feedback from some new celeb bffs! Not only is it great to now have a platform that showcases our work (finished or not) but its also a platform that works and has everyone included with statements and everyone's in the right departments etc. We did in 6 weeks what the eca took 3 months to fail at. In a way (that is v artsy and I feel like a wanker for saying it) this kind of was our final pieces. For my work especially being centred around the inherent mediocrity and unfailing selfishness of an institution that charges thousands of pounds in tuition to attend, but consistently fails the students, my final piece being "You Are Not Invited" and then we literally didn't invite them to a whole other degree show. "You Are Not Invited" was an un-invitation to everyone who makes the art "world"/institutions/whatever the steaming capitalist shitscape that it is today. The post-it note was a "goodbye forever" to such establishments, and a note to say that if they didn't want to nurture our work, we would find a place or build a place that would. And in making @alt_d.show we made a place that values us and our work. I am filled with pride to say that the website is live, you can go see it, gon have a wee swatch, there is ZERO input from the eca or any other lizards- its all us. All 17 of us on the committee came together to right what had been wronged and create a platform that done us and our work justice.
