All The Love: Damiana Plant Profile
Tumblr media
Alexis J. Cunningfolk
Today I get to introduce you to a plant friend that I met in one of my very first formal herbalism classes. I still remember the ease and laughter that talking about Damiana (Turnera diffusa) brought to the class - a feeling which encapsulates Damiana’s gift of joyful exchange. While Damiana is typically classified as an aphrodisiac and seen as an herb of sex and romance (which it is), Damiana is also a wonderful plant ally to work with when you’re trying to create connection with other folks in a shared space.
If you prefer to be able to easily print out the following profile as well as learn about other aphrodisiac and adaptogenic herbs, you’re invited to The Plant Ally Library.
I hope you enjoy meeting Damiana and getting to know this plant that acts as an “adaptogenic aphrodisiac” helping us to soften our edges while feeling sturdy in our sense of wellbeing.
Enjoy!

Main Uses : An herb that has recorded use stretching back to Mayan culture, Damiana has a lot to offer in the ways of herbal healing. Damiana has long been used by the indigenous peoples of the American Southwest and Mexico, including the Yaqui, Rarámuri, and Pima Bajo, including as a tonic for stomachache, a remedy for diarrhea, infertility, inflammation, for lowering blood sugar, increasing the metabolism, and low libido.¹
Damiana was one of the first herbs I was introduced to in my first round of herbal classes in Southern California and it’s honored as an important local remedy as well as a recognizable local liqueur bottled in a distinctive Goddess-shaped bottle. While Damiana is typically presented as an aphrodisiac (which is definitely is), you’ll sometimes see the plant is categorized as an adaptogen. I was taught to use it as an adaptogenic aphrodisiac, embodying the best qualities of herbal aphrodisiacs with the nourishing and restorative qualities of an adaptogen. One of the reasons that Damiana is so effective as an aphrodisiac is that it reduces stress and stress-related complaints including ulcers, colic, indigestion, poor fertility, and low libido. In addition to helping with stress relief, the adaptogenic qualities of Damiana work to regulate the pituitary gland and increase energy.
Damiana clears brain fog and many head-related disorders including migraines and headaches, calms the nervous system, and greatly reduces overactive mental activity. For anxiety, Damiana is indicated when anxiety creates sluggishness in the mornings and becomes increasingly worse in the evenings.² Damiana can either be stimulating or relaxing to the nervous system, depending on the needs of the body. Damiana is helpful in cases of mental agitation including OCD and anxiety as well as for cases of cognitive decline, including dementia. Herbalist Thomas Bartram recommends combining Damiana with Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and Milky Oats (Avena sativa) for dementia with accompanying indications of weakness resulting in a blend which strengthens and nourishes while providing gentle stimulation which assists in cognitive function and stability.³
The herb helps the nervous system to deliver information throughout the body and as both a brain tonic and aphrodisiac helps to line up mental and physical clarity and desire (i.e. helping to alleviate the ways we can get stuck in our heads in unhelpful ways when pursuing pleasure). While the herb has soothing energies, it is also energizing in that it invigorates the mind and body, which is another reason that Damiana is such a great aphrodisiac.
Tumblr media
As an aphrodisiac, Damiana also helps to improve libido, increase fertility and sperm count, and reconnect the body to the experience of orgasm. Energetically, the herb is said to help folks who want to to overcome shyness and fear of intimacy as well as the fear of being “good enough” in bed. Herbalist Karen M. Rose recommends Damiana for those recovering their pleasure after experiencing disconnection due to trauma.⁴ While it should not be used during pregnancy, the herb can be used during labor to aid in childbirth - it softens and opens up the birth canal. Damiana is also useful for menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Overall, it is an excellent herb to reconnect with pleasure in your life.
In addition to use as a nervine and aphrodisiac, Damiana can help to expel excess phlegm and dry up excess mucous in cases of colds and bronchitis. The herb helps to relax the respiratory system, calming coughs and helping to alleviate the symptoms of asthma.
Topically the herbal oil (not essential oil) can be used as a lubricant in mundane and magickal rites of sex and pleasure.
Magickal Uses : Damiana is an excellent herb for love magick, especially when sexual desire is involved. Use it in sex magick and practices, especially when it comes to communicating clearly with your partners and feeling comfortable expressing your sexuality.
The herb also aids in the development and awakening of psychic vision. Magickal herbalist Paul Beyerl notes that Damiana has an affinity with quartz crystal and he recommends storing clear quartz in your jar of Damiana as well as making an quartz crystal oil using a base of Damiana oil.⁵
The Damiana Personality : The need of a Damiana person feels so great that they have cut themselves off from it to cope. Damiana folk want sensuality and sex but the emotional labor to experience it because of the emotional baggage they carry can feel insurmountable. There can be a pattern of denying and suppressing wants and desires which then emerge in unhealthy habits in an attempt to find the pleasure they feel denied. There can also be a fear of rejection tied up with low self-esteem that makes even the smallest dismissal from a significant other feel catastrophic, further driving a wedge between their needs and desires for physical affection. Fortunately, when Damiana folk are able to get the support they need (therapeutic, nutritional, herbal, etc) and untie the emotional knots tangling up their spirit, they can and will experience pleasure again. In fact, they’ll often find that the pleasure that they imagined was unattainable is small compared to what they are able to experience in a beneficial Damiana state. For Damiana is a patient, flexible, and wildly intelligent ally when it comes to pleasure of all kinds, not just sexual, and reconnecting us to the radiant fullness of feeling.
Contraindications : Generally regarded as safe, but may interfere with iron absorption. Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Caution with diabetes medication due to Damiana’s affect on blood sugar.
Dosage : Standard dosage.
I believe that every plant contains the possibility of helping us to connect with our pleasure as a state of expanded connectivity where we feel good in ourselves.
Of course, there are plants that have a reputation for being very effective at helping us to connect with what feels good in our bodies and our relationships, including Milky Oat (Avena sativa), Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), to name just a few. Building a relationship with plant allies, returning your herbalism to an earth-centered practice, and allowing yourself to play with possibility as a path of healing can all help to name and experience your own pleasure. In other words, there are as many paths to pleasure as there are beings, and plant allies are just one of many helpful partnerships to finding those paths.
As you journey through the world of herbalism, I hope that you find those plant allies which help you connect with your deepest desires, and find a way to know your desires as things of loveliness and revelation throughout your life.

The benefit of Wild Plants: the best recipes with dandelion, nettle, and clover
Tumblr media
Early spring is the season of shoots, bitter greens, and wild herbs. A diet based on the first natural harvest can be called health-improving since fresh plant food is not enough in winter. And in the spring, the range of cultivated plants is quite monotonous, because of which the body may not receive the necessary nutrients.
How to eat wild plants
Young wild plants – sprouts, shoots, flowers, roots, leaves-are both independent food, and a wonderful addition to the usual dishes. Greens are most valuable in fresh form in salads, smoothies, and green cocktails. Use dandelion, sorrel, lime buds, nettle, clover, micro-green, rhubarb, sour and many others. A variety of combinations of wild plants and cultivated crops will create unique flavors that are not found even in fine restaurants.
Early wild plants are characterized by a bitter taste, which stimulates the release of digestive juices. If the bitterness is not to your taste, pour hot water over the plants or passer for a couple of minutes. Prolonged heat treatment is undesirable, as it completely or partially destroys vitamins and enzymes, phytoncides, and some other biologically active substances, such as essential oils.
3 reasons to eat wild plants
Compared to agricultural plants, wild plants have a higher nutritional value, that is, they contain more healthy substances by 3.53oz wt. This means that to get the same amount of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients from agricultural plants, they need to be eaten several times more in volume than wild plants.
Wild plants are not treated with pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, unlike agricultural crops, and are not subjected to genetic modification and selection. The use of wild plants adds variety to the diet. Perhaps this variety and alternation of products allowed to provide the diet with all the necessary nutrients. And avoid the food sensitivities that occur with excessive consumption of the product from day to day.
Tumblr media
The benefits of wild plants
In terms of the content of vitamins, minerals, and other active compounds, herbs are not inferior and even significantly superior to cultivated plants. Among organic compounds, it is especially worth highlighting substances of secondary synthesis – alkaloids, glycosides, phenolic compounds (phenols, lignans, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins), essential oils, resins, organic acids, and others.
Wild plants contain the entire spectrum of macro-and microelements: K, Ca, Mg, Na, S, P, Si, Fe, Si, Zp, Co, Md, Mo, Ni, Ad, Al, As, and others. Most plants contain not vitamins, but provitamins, that is, more stable substances that are synthesized into the appropriate vitamins at the right time.
Vitamins from plant foods are better suited for maintaining the body, because, unlike synthetic drugs, they are better absorbed and do not have side effects.
Safety precautions
Before using it for food, be sure to check the reference book of edible plants or ask for advice from an experienced herbalist. Do not eat plants that you doubt are edible.
Plants accumulate pollutants, so it is worth collecting them away from roads, industrial facilities, buildings, and areas where pesticides and herbicides are used. Do not use plants grown for decorative purposes.
Many wild plants have a very rich and specific composition, so they should be used for food in reasonable quantities. Start to introduce them into the diet gradually, in small amounts.

Clover (Trifolium pratense)
Delicate red clover flowers will be a great decoration and a useful addition to salads, cocktails, and desserts.
Clover is used to relieving allergies, and headaches, strengthen bones and joints, and restore hormonal background, skin problems, and digestion.
The study of edible plants showed that they contain antioxidants, such as carotenoids, flavonoids, and phenols, which were discussed above, as well as protein, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, and molybdenum, vitamins A, C, vitamins of group B. Contraindications: do not use during pregnancy and with blood clotting disorders. Clover flowers and leaves are used for food.
In addition to the immediate health benefits, edible flowers have a positive effect on the state of mind and mood. A pleasant aroma, colors, and taste have a calming effect on the nervous system and emotional state, which in turn has a positive effect on our overall well-being.

Herbal Trees
Many of our herbal allies are trees! These herbal trees not only add beauty and shade to our landscapes, they also contribute to our health and well-being. Some trees contain medicine in their bark, but today we'll focus on trees that contain medicine in their leaves, flowers, and fruit.
Elder Tree (Sambucus spp.)
Sambucus mexicana, Sambucus canadensis, and Sambucus nigra are the species most commonly grown for their berries. These beautiful trees can be grown in a wide range of climates. They grow as wide as they are tall with a round, weeping canopy. Plant it where it can get lots of sun and plant it with a partner, they're more successful when planted in pairs of differing varieties.
Elder trees give us herbal support from its leaves, flowers, and berries, which can all be used fresh or dry. The leaves are most often made into a salve and used externally for soothing and mending wounds. The flowers are make a tasty tea. They are a comforting herb and can help the body fight low grade fevers by inspiring perspiration. The elderberries are commonly made into a syrup. They're loaded with antioxidants and flavonoids, boosting the immune system.
Hawthorn (Cratagus spp.)
Hawthorns have over 200 species, a wide range of sizes, and can be found throughout temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They prefer rich soil, but can tolerate sandy or heavy clay as well. They're drought resistant, prefer full sun, and do better planted in pairs for cross pollination.
They bloom in mid to late spring and the white or light pink flowers can be harvested and used dry or fresh. Hawthorn flowers assist in restoring blood pressure levels to normal. In late summer/early autumn the fruit can be harvested and also used fresh or dried. The berries are rich in antioxidants and help protect our blood vessels. The cardio-tonic benefits of hawthorn have been well known for thousands of years, hawthorn is so effective at strengthening and nourishing the heart that if you're on any heart medications it's important to discuss using hawthorn with your doctor first.
Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus)
With beautiful lilac-colored blossoms, the chaste tree (which is actually a shrub) is a sight to behold. It can grow over 10 feet tall and is native to southern Europe and western Asia. The chaste tree prefers a warmer climate, well drained soil, and full sun. It's a hardy tree that only needs moderate watering.
The flowers bloom in late spring or early summer, but the berries that appear once the flowers are pollinated are the part of the tree used in herbal preparation. The chasteberries start out green and ripen to a black ashen color, both of which can be used. Green berries should be fully dried before storing. They act on the hypothalamic-pituitary axis in the brain to regulate hormone production. They're also effective at easing symptoms of PMS. They help the body seek harmony and balance. The berries have a peppery flavor and can be added whole to a pepper grinder and used like pepper in cooking, making them pretty easy to incorporate into your diet.
Linden (Tilia spp.)
There are 30 species of linden trees and all of them can be used in herbal preparations. They grow widely throughout North America, Europe, and parts of Asia and do well in temperate climates. They can grow over 50 feet tall with a dense canopy, making it a great tree for shade. Linden does well in almost any soil except wet soil or prolonged drought.
The flowers bloom in summer and give off a pleasant scent. They have a relaxing and restorative effect on the nervous system, anti-inflammatory properties, and diuretic properties making it good for the heart. It also gently promotes perspiration making it a good choice to cope with cold and flu symptoms. You can make a linden tea or turn your flowers into a tincture if the floral flavor of the tea is too overpowering.
Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
Ginkgo is native to China, but now grows all over. They can reach up to 50 feet tall and 35 feet wide, making a unique and beautiful shade tree. Ginkgo can grow in just about any soil, but dislikes hot and dry climates.
The leaves are used in medicinal preparation and most potent in the fall once the leaves have changed from green to gold. When the chlorophyll levels drop in the leaves, the flavones and cyanidin compounds increase. Ginkgo leaves have an antioxidant effect on the brain, increase circulation and the uptake of nutrients, and are valued as a brain tonic thanks to flavanoids like quercetin, ginkgolides, and glycosides as well as terpenes present in ginkgo. They can be made into a tea either by themselves or as part of a tea blend, or made into a tincture. Green ginkgo leaves are tart and astringent and make a yummy addition to sauteed vegetables.

What is a coronavirus?
By: Emmanuel Arroyo, LAc                                                           28 January 2020
Coronavirus, discovered in 1960,[1] is a positive-sense RNA virus that mainly targets the upper respiratory tract except for SARS which causes upper and lower tract infections and gastroenteritis. A positive-sense RNA is also known as positive-strand RNA virus[2]. The name is given due to its single strand of RNA while positive refers to genetic information carried for replication.
Coronavirus (CoV) belong to the order of Nidovirales, which includes Coronaviridae, Arteriviridae, and Roniviridae families. CoV is divided into two subfamilies, CoV and the second subfamily Torovirinae. CoV has a cap (lets call it head) which carries all the information needed for replication, while the tail has all the information related with structure and functions. The tail contains four important structures, S (spike), M (membrane), E (envelope), and N (nucleocapsid) proteins. The S structure is the one that attaches to the host cell receptors. The M structure gives the shape/form. The E structure is important for assembly and release of the virus; some virus need the M structure for pathogenesis. Structure N facilitates binding and affinity to viral or non-viral RNA. Both N and M work synergistically and facilitate replication and diffusion of the virus in the host.[3]
For binding, CoV mainly uses aminopeptidase as receptors except SARS and NL63 that use angiotensin-converting enzyme and MERS uses dipeptidyl-peptidase-4.
In the past CoV was classified according to the immune reaction, hence the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma nomenclature.
The Wuhan-coronavirus is new and is identified as 2019-nCoV.
How many human coronaviruses are known?[4],[5]
There are six coronavirus:
1.       Alpha coronavirus:
a.       229E (1960) – causes common cold
b.       NL63 (2004)
2.       Beta coronavirus:
a.       OC43 (1960) – causes common cold
b.       HKU1(2005)
c.       SARS-CoV (2003)
d.       MERS-CoV (2012)
3.       Unknown
a.       2019-nCoV (2019)
There is no vaccine for any, the only vaccine created was for SARS and it was an attenuated virus.
Which Virus, Disinfecting Wipes Kill?[6]
·       Lysol claims it product kills[7]
o   Virus: Herpes simplex virus type 1, Human coronavirus, influenza A virus
o   Bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep), Staplylococcus aureus (Staph), Escherichia coli O157: H7 (E. coli), Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Salmonella enterica (Salmonella)
·       Clorox Healthcare®Bleach Germicidal Disinfectants and Clorox Healthcare® Bleach Germicidal Wipes[8]
o   Virus: Adenovirus Type 2, Avian influenza A, Canine parvovirus, Enterovirus D68, Feline Panleukopenia, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Herpes simplex type 2, Human coronavirus, Human immunodeficiency virus type 1, Influenza A, Influenza B, Measles, MERS-CoV, Norovirus, Poliovirus type 1, Respiratory syncytial (RSV), Rhinovirus, Rotavirus, SARS-CoV.
It is important to point that CoV killed by Clorox are SARS, MERS and that H-CoV mentioned must be the ones that cause common cold. [9]
Chinese Medicine, Essential Oils, Supplements and CoV Signs and Symptoms
In China, n-CoV is diagnosed as wet heat. The tongue has a thick yellow fur and a red and wet body. The signs and symptoms are runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, fever, and difficulty breathing leading to respiratory arrest.[10],[11],[12] The main feature is difficulty breathing and x-ray showing bilateral lung ‘infiltrates’. It takes 2 to 14 days to show any sign and symptoms. It is calculated that 2 people can infect 2.5 people a day, the infection increase rate is 53% per day.[13]
Herbal medicine contains polysaccharides, polyphenols, and antioxidants known to modulate and assist the immune system. Chinese medicine has a vast compendium of herbs that can be used for helping during any disease. Currently, China is using Chinese medicine and western medicine to fight the virus. For an herbal prescription a diagnosis is needed but as precaution you might use Gan mao ling. The ingredients in Gan mao ling are gang mei geng or wan dian jin (Radix Iicis asprellae), wu zhu he (Folium Evodia), shan pu he or wu zhi gan (Folium viticis) ban lan gen (Radix Isatidis), ju hua (Flos Chrysanthemum), jin yin hua (Flos Lonicerae), and bo he (Herba Mentha). This formula clears heat, toxins, and opens the chest. Ban lan gen and jin yin hua have immunomodulatory properties.[14]
Herbs that has shown effective against the CoV are rich triterpene glycosides such as saikosaponins A, B2,C, and D or phenolic compounds. The herbs are the followings:[15],[16]
·       Radix Bupleurum (Chai hu) – early stage infection of 229E
·       Radix Scrophularia (Xuan shen) -early stage infection of 229E
·       Lycoris Radiata (Shi Suan) – SARS
·       Herba Artemisia annua (Huang hua hao or Qing hao) - SARS
·       Folium Pyrrosia lingua (Shi wei) – SARS
·       Radix Lindera aggregata (Wu yao) – SARS
·       Isatidis indigotica (Ban lan gen, Cao da qing, Ma lan) – SARS
·       Torreya nucifera or Semen Torreyae (Fei zi) – SARS
·       Radix Dioscorea spp – SARS
As reported by R. K. Ganjhu et al:
Also, if we glance through the different plant preparations reported in this review, we will notice that most of them represent extracts made of more than one plant species. That draws our attention to the uniqueness of each plant species and their constituents, which together with other plants make a formulation effective in treating a plethora of viral infections. An in-depth analysis of such formulations along with a bio-activity guided isolation of active components shall definitely give a better idea about the active principles responsible for a varied antiviral action. Research in this direction is in progress as collated from different papers. There are ample reports revealing immunomodulatory properties of many plant extracts mediated through induction and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-6 and IL-12. IL-12, produced by activated monocytes/macrophages and dendritic cells, stimulate cell-mediated immunity to release IFN-c, promote Th-1 responses, and enhance CD8 + cytotoxic T cell activity, thereby playing a pivotal role in controlling viral replication. There also exist evidence on IL-6 production by macrophages in response to virus infections, in addition to reports justifying its role in clearing viral infection from the physiological system.[17]
Chinese medicine does have herbs that can stop any early sign and symptom, regulate and modulate the immune system, and even clear the body from a virus. Feel free to consult your acupuncturist on herbal treatment as soon as early sign and symptoms are present. Do not wait.
Another preventing method is taking a multivitamin and mineral, adding an extra dose of 25 mg of zinc, selenium, and manganese while adding 1,500 mg of L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine is converted to L-Acetylcarnitine[18],[19],[20] which has immunomodulator, sedative, and analgesic effects. It regulates dopamine, serotonin, and GABA and has an affinity for the hippocampus and hypothalamus. Zinc, selenium, and manganese are the minerals needed to produce super oxidase dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, two antioxidants produced by the human; L-Glutamine[21], an amino acid, is involved in the production of glutathione peroxidase as well.
A third way of prevention is diffusing essential oil of Eucalyptus radiata, E. globulus, E. citriodora, Laurel, Tea tree, Hyssop, and Palmarosa.[22] According to Schnaubelt, PhD hyssop has the strongest antiviral properties, palmarosa targets the upper and lower respiratory tract and tea tree has a broad application enhancing other oils qualities.
Last, Drink plenty of fluids, wash your hands, cover your face when sneezing, wash your hands after touching your mouth or any other surface and always gargle.

Why vegetables are important?
Tumblr media
Vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked and play an important role in human nutrition, mostly low in fat and carbohydrates, but high in vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Many nutritionists encourage people to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, five or more portions a day is often recommended.
A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent certain types of cancer, reduce the risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect on blood sugar, which can help maintain appetite.
Vegetables play an important role in human nutrition. Most are low in fat and calories but heavy and full. They provide dietary fiber and are an important source of essential vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Of particular importance are the antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E. When vegetables are included in the diet, the incidence of cancer, stroke, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases is reduced. Studies have shown that those who eat less than three-quarters of the fruits and vegetables per day have a 20 percent lower risk of coronary heart disease or stroke than those who eat more than five quarters. The nutrient content of vegetables varies significantly; Some contain beneficial amounts of protein although they usually contain a small amount of fat, provitamin; Dietary minerals; And carbohydrates.
Nightshade family vegetables can reduce inflammation and DNA damage. These vegetables are nutritious, healthy food and do not cause inflammation. Moreover, black nightshade is used for the treatment of dermatitis, stomach complications, fever and various ailments.
However, vegetables often contain toxins and antinutrients that interfere with the absorption of nutrients. These include α-solanine, α-chaconine, enzyme inhibitors (cholinesterase, protease, amylase, etc.), cyanide and cyanide precursors, oxalic acid, tannins, and others. To protect against insects, predators and fungi that can attack plants. Some peas contain phytohemagglutinin and cassava roots contain cyanogenic glycosides like bamboo shoots. These toxins can be neutralized through adequate cooking. Green potatoes contain glycoalkaloids and should be avoided.
Fruits and vegetables, especially herbs, are involved in about half of all gastrointestinal infections caused by norovirus in the United States. These foods are usually eaten raw and can be contaminated when prepared by an infected food handler. Hygiene is important when handling raw foods, and such products need to be properly cleaned, handled and stored to limit contamination.

Rosehip Benefits for Health and How to Use
Tumblr media
Rosehip benefits for health and how to use for best effects. If you have never been in the habit of using a rosehip - read on and you will change your mind! The stems are small grainy, edible fruits that grow under the leaves of shrubs, called wild roses (usually of the Rosa rugosa species). These plants are characteristic of the northern hemisphere, ie regions with temperate climates. The rosehip comes in many different colors, shapes, and sizes. They are usually reddish to dark orange in color and have a slightly conical, spherical shape. They can be used as fresh, dried, for making various teas, jams, syrups, essential oils, and even for making wine. Rosehip is very widely used in traditional medicine. For example in the treatment of various diseases (inflammation, various pains, etc.), and current research confirms a number of beneficial effects of these herbs. In today's article, we will get acquainted with the benefits of the rosehip for our health.
Rosehip benefits for health
Rosehip is a nutritionally concentrated food The composition of 30 grams of rods contains the following values: about 50 calories, 11g carbohydrates (7g fiber and about 1g sugars), 1g protein, and a negligible amount of fat. The real value of the bars, as well as the rest of the fresh food, is their exceptional micronutrient and that is the following (in 30g) daily needs: - 200% Vitamin C - 30%  for vitamin A - 15% for manganese - 10% for vitamin K - 9% for vitamin E - 6% for calcium - 5% of magnesium - 4% of potassium In addition, bars are an excellent source of antioxidant components These include the very important lycopene and beta carotene - pigments that give the specific color, but also ellagic acid, quercetin, and the mentioned vitamin C. Antioxidants are the body's defense mechanism against free radicals. These are harmful components that are constantly produced as metabolic waste in the body and oxidatively damage its various cells and tissues. The body has mechanisms to produce a certain percentage of necessary antioxidants, but of course, it is not enough and still depends on the intake. Permanent oxidative damage leads to processes of chronic inflammation or inflammation. All this in the long run is one of the main reasons for the development of chronic diseases. It is worth mentioning that the nutrition of the rosehip depends on many factors in cultivation. It depends on the soil, the method of cultivation and the processing techniques, so fresh mountain rosehip has a significantly higher concentration of vitamin C, compared to commercially obtained rosehip. Rosehip seeds also contain amounts of glycosides, cyanidins, which can be toxic to humans. In fact, the seeds of many other fruits of the same family, such as apples, apricots, etc., also contain cyanides. However, when in small quantities, this seed can not cause us any problems. In addition, seeds are often difficult to digest and absorb unless properly broken. With rosehip, we get better immunity This is quite logical to conclude, given that rose hips are one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C. Only a few fresh grains from the bars can meet the daily needs of an adult of this vitamin. Studies show that vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is essential for stimulating the immune response. This increases the body's ability to defend itself against various threats. In addition, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that suppresses chronic inflammatory processes. Foods rich in vitamin C (fresh food) should be eaten more often, especially during periods of colds and flu. Rosehip and its products are a great choice if we want to get more vitamin C in our body. The rosehip is great against aging Vitamin C, in addition to what we have already said, is also very important for skin health. Namely, it is one of the key elements in the metabolism of collagen synthesis - the most abundant protein in the human body. This protein is crucial for skin health, but also for bone health. Vitamin K, which is also rich in rosehip, also contributes to healthier bones. Vitamin C protects the skin through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, along with other antioxidant components of the rosehip. In addition, the rosehip contains (seeds) and polyunsaturated fatty acids that can contribute to healthier skin, ie protect it from pro-inflammatory components, such as UV rays, cigarette smoke, pollution, etc.
Tumblr media
One study shows that the use of rosehip-based powder can visibly reduce skin wrinkles and increase its elasticity and moisture. Rosehip can be very helpful in arthritis This is perhaps the most famous and beneficial effect of the rosehip. Regular consumption of these fruits can alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, such as pain, numbness, inflammation, etc. This is thought to be due to the ability of rosehip to block the activity of certain proteins in cartilage cells that are a major cause of joint tissue degradation. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of rose hips can also reduce chemotaxis. Chemotaxis is the transport or transfer of immune cells into joint tissues. Some studies show that regular use of certain rosehip supplements can increase the mobility or mobility of people with rheumatoid arthritis by as much as 25%. Better cardiovascular health by consuming rosehip Eating rosehip can significantly improve the health of our heart. It does this by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the body. A study of more than 30 volunteers found that drinking rosehip-based beverages could lower blood pressure and total cholesterol. Additionally, such drinks, and the fruits themselves, are rich in fiber and a range of antioxidants. All of these components are very good for improving our cardiovascular health. The rosehip has a potential anticancer effect Some laboratory studies show an anticancer effect on the rosehip. For example, a 2015 study published in the journal Cancer found that treating malignant cells with rosehip extract proved to be particularly successful in stopping and slowing their growth. This extract has been able to selectively reduce specific MAPK and AKT, enzymes responsible for stimulating the growth of malignant cells in breast cancer. Ways of using the rosehip As already mentioned, the rosehip can be consumed as fresh, dry, as tea, or as supplements based on them. We need to remember that fresh shrimp are best eaten when they are softer. The standard recommended dose is about 10g per day, consumed twice. Over 40g per day, rosehip can cause side effects, such as digestive discomfort. Tea can be made from both fresh and dried rose hips. Rosehip tea is a great way to get the most out of their nutrition. How to make rosehip tea that will retain all the nutrients and healing properties? Put 200 to 300 grams of dried or fresh rose hips in 1 liter of water. Leave the water on the fire until it boils. Once it boils, remove the pan from the heat and let the liquid stand for a few hours or overnight. The next day, crush the softened fruits with a fork or mash them with a blender and return them to the liquid. If necessary, add a little more water and put the pan back on the fire until it boils. Then remove from the heat, allow to cool, strain, and drink in moderation throughout the day. Tea can be sweetened with honey or cinnamon and lemon, but it is best to drink it without any additives because it is very tasty without them. It is important to mention that rosehip tea should be drunk by breastfeeding mothers, because through milk vitamin C reaches the baby, thanks to which it will be healthier and resistant to colds and other viral infections. Rosehip tea for immunity Take three tablespoons of chopped, dried rosehips, soak them in 0.5 liters of cold water, and let them stand for three days.
Tumblr media
Then put them to boil for half an hour, leave it to cool, then strain and mix with the same amount of milk, sweeten with a teaspoon of honey. Drink this tea for immunity always before bedtime. Tea strengthens the body, especially in the elderly. Rosehip tea for dry coughs and colds with excellent results and easy to prepare. Put a tablespoon of finely chopped dried rosehips, pour 2 dl of boiled water, cover and leave for 15 minutes. Strain, sweeten with a teaspoon of honey, and drink before meals, three times a day. If a cold is the cause of the cough, drink it more often several times a day. It is important that it is always freshly prepared, not overheated. Be sure to consult your doctor about rosehip supplements.
Conclusion
Rosehip is an herb that has been used for a long time with a wide range of benefits for our health. Its composition is extremely good for human health. It contains carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, and very little fat. As for vitamins and minerals, vitamins A, C, E, K are present in the rosehip, as well as the minerals calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and others. The direct health benefits of the rosehip are as numerous as those for immunity, a healthier heart, bones, skin, and even anti-cancer properties. It can be consumed as a tea, for making jams, syrups, essential oils, and for making wine. In any case, a rosehip is a healthy option in the diet that you should use because you have nothing to lose, you can only improve your health. Read the full article

16) Decoction of root of giloy is for dysentery and diarrhea. Decoction of old stems for periodic fever.
17) Decoction of stem with cold and hot water (about 3-4 g) in morning in an empty stomach, as a tonic.
18) Giloy is known as a medhya rasayana (learning and memory enhancer) and Vayasthapana(herb which restores age) in Ayurveda. It is also described to be useful for treatment of bhrama (Vertigo) in various Ayurvedic texts.
19) This medicinal herb is a health rejuvenator which is also widely known for its effectivity in enhancing natural immunity to fight against a number of illnesses such as fever, jaundice, skin diseases, constipation and tuberculosis.
20) Juice of the stem with honey is better for the treatment of Asthma. Stem is used as an ingredient for Ayurvedic preparations to treat general debility, UTI, fever, dyspepsia.
21) In Sushruta root is used for suturing surgical wound.
            - The areal roots of Guduchi are so thin yet so strong that, Sushruta made use of this for suturing surgical wounds. This had dual benefits. One was the thread were very strong so, there was no chance of wound rupture. Second is, Guduchi has potent wound healing property. Hence wound healing used to happen very quickly.
22) Guduchi / giloy is best to cause astringent effect, promoting digestion, alleviating Vata, Kapha, constipation and Raktapitta (bleeding disorders).
23) A medicated ghee called Guducyadi ghrta “alleviates gulma, dyspnoea, wasting, asthma and cough.
Note : 1) According to Vaidya Mishra, guduchi’s light quality coupled with its heating action allows it to penetrate the dhatus(tissue) while the astringent quality enhances absorption in the dhatus.
            2) Guduchi is classified in the Caraka Samhita under the category of “Jeevaneeya Gana” which means “Enlivening and Anti-Aging Herbs”.
             3) guduchi is described as: laghu (light), deepanam (kindles digestive fire), chakshushyam (good for the eyes), dhatukrit (builds the seven bodily tissues), medhayam (rejuvenating for the mind), bayasthaapankarakam (maintains youthfulness and longevity).
             4) Vaidya Mishra has described guduchi as “jivanti” (or life-giving).
                            5) All three of  parts of guduchi should be collected in the summer when the bitter qualities are most abundant and, if not used fresh, dried in the shade.   Guduchi grows well without fertilizer or pesticide making it simple to grow.  It is easy to recognize and can be propagated by cuttings.
                      6) Charaka described over two dozen poly-herbal formulas that include Guduchi and that are used for a wide variety of ailments.
Research
1) Modern research has found that guduchi also has gastroprotective properties. Epoxy clerodane diterpene, a compound in guduchi, was isolated and given to rats with gastric ulcer. The compound reduced the gastic ulcer “by reinforcement of defensive elements and diminishing the offensive elements.”
Precautions
1) Avoid during pregnancy or consult any ayurveda physician before use.
2) people with diabetes should take this herb only under medical supervision. Because with diabetic tablet it lowers the blood sugar levels.

Fall in a Pot!
Digging Deep with Goddess Gardener, Cynthia Brian
Fall in a Pot! By Cynthia Brian
“Truth comes out in wine.” Pliny the Elder
“The people who give you their food give you their heart."  Cesar Chavez
The fires and smoke have ravaged farms and vineyards throughout Northern California, including my family vineyards in Napa County. The grapes are plump, juicy, and ripe. Harvesting would normally be in full swing this month, but, sadly, with so much smoke suffocating fields throughout the region, wineries require red grape samples to be tested for smoke taint.
Smoke taint is concentrated in the skins and during fermentation glycosides break down, releasing the volatile phenols and smoky flavors into the wine. The result tastes like licking an ashtray. The damage is not detectable by looking at or eating a grape. It is only noticeable in the wine. Since white wine isn’t barrel-aged nor use skins, white wine doesn’t experience this smoke taint.
The largest testing laboratory, ETS in St. Helena is swamped with results backlogged for weeks or, as some growers are finding out, over a month away. If a grower or winery is not a client, they won’t be able to process samples until November. By then the window for harvesting will be over. The grapes will be dried raisins, not suitable for pressing.
What this means for viticulture in 2020 is that farmers may lose their entire crop and face increased financial hardships as the grapes hang on the vines. There may not be a 2020 red wine vintage as wineries are not allowing deliveries of grapes under contract until the lab results have confirmed an absence of smoke taint. Truth is always evident in the wine.
With the stifling smoke of the past weeks, my normal September gardening tasks have been placed on pause. I am sheltering indoors and suggesting to clients and readers to do the same to maintain health as smoke inhalation peril is increased during Covid-19.  But this doesn’t mean that I’m avoiding my garden. I’ve been asked to write another gardening book and am brainstorming in my library. And, I’m bringing the fruits of my labors inside to my kitchen while I chef it up.
“Oh, I can smell the sauce from here,” my charity collaborator and friend, Terry in Washington, emailed me when I wrote her that, to mask the smell of smoke, I was making my family’s traditional homemade spaghetti sauce with ingredients from my waning garden. My process reminded her of being in her Italian great-grandmother’s kitchen.
With the intense sunshine and heat of the summer, tomatoes, onions, garlic, peppers, and herbs are filled with flavor. Being Italian, neither my Nonie, Mom, nor relatives measured anything. A recipe was handed down throughout the generations by watching, doing, and adding “a little of this, a pinch of that”, lots of garlic, and several splashes of wine. We have always cooked by taste, adding spices as needed. Naturally, numerous “malfatti’s” or mistakes occurred, which oftentimes, were our greatest successes.
The best cooks that I’ve ever encountered have also been avid gardeners. Gardeners experience nature using their senses. Gardeners amber through a potager snipping, smelling, nibbling, feeling, and seeing with a profound sensitivity to the innate characteristics of each legume, bloom, or crop. Being an astute chef requires one to know how to mix and match fruits, flowers, vegetables, and herbs to enhance any dish, allowing the natural essences to imbue their zests and aromas. Food must look good, smell good, taste good, and be ultimately satisfying, making one feel good.
Autumn is harvest time. Besides eating our tasty produce now, it is also the perfect opportunity to can or freeze fresh crops to savor during the winter months.
What herbs can you dry or freeze: Basil Bay Oregano Sage Rosemary Dill Thyme Parsley
I prefer to freeze basil and parsley or make “sauce ice cubes” with those. The rest of the herbs, I dry, then store in labeled jars.
Cynthia’s Italian Family Spaghetti Sauce “Recipe”  In a pestle and mortar grind together oregano, sage, rosemary, and thyme. You can also use a blender if that is easier for you.  Chop red and yellow onions and several cloves of garlic.  Saute onions and garlic in olive oil until translucent.  Stir in chopped mushrooms.  Add 3 or 4 whole bay leaves and a handful of the mashed herbs.  Gently brown meat (ground beef, lamb, pork, chicken) in the mixture. If you want a vegetarian sauce, skip this part.  Cut 6-10 tomatoes into small pieces. Smash half of the tomatoes. Add cut pieces and the tomato paste to the meat mixture.  Pour in red wine.  Tear 4 or 5 basil leaves into pieces and stir into pot.  Continue adding more wine as necessary.   Simmer at lowest heat for several hours until all the flavors have melded together. Turn off the burner to let sit.  Sprinkle sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
Optional ingredients include peppers or eggplant. To make a Puttanesca, add olives and capers.
The final sauce will be thick, rich, and delicious. Don’t be afraid to make this in advance as flavors are more delectable the next day. Freeze or can any extra sauce. (I always make a big pot and freeze tubs for later consumption.)
Pour over spaghetti, ravioli, lasagna, or any pasta. Toss lightly to blend the sauce. Top with chopped parsley, torn basil leaves, and grated parmesan. Serve with crusty sourdough, a romaine lettuce salad, and a glass of sustainable, locally grown, aged, and bottled Captain Vineyards Petite Sirah. Finish off your meal with fall fruits: a bunch of grapes, tangy tangerine segments, crunchy Asian pears, and a few figs. Buon appetito.
What are you harvesting in your garden right now? Do you have a family “Fall in a Pot” recipe to share with others?
My Mom taught me that expressing love came from gardens and home-made food. My Dad taught me that farmers feed the hungry and wine is the nectar of the gods. Both gave their hearts. During these very challenging times as we pray that our California vineyards survive this ordeal, let’s toast to life with a glass of local vino and welcome fall with a pot of goodness from our gardens.
In my next column, I plan to be outside once again offering you guidance for autumn gardening. Until then, limit your outdoor exposure when it’s smokey and make sure to water your landscape deeply in the early mornings or late evenings.  Be aware that your containers may need a daily dose of H2O.  For the next two to three months until the rain begins to fall, our area is at imminent risk of fire danger. Be ready to evacuate. Read my article on what you need to know and do to be prepared. https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1414/Are-you-ready-to-evacuate.html
For a ZOOM presentation of, “Tips, Tricks, and Tonics in the Garden” join me on Thursday, September 17th, as I kick-off the 50th Anniversary of the Moraga Garden Club. For information on this ZOOM meeting, call Membership Chair Jane Magnani at 925-451-7031 for times to join in the conversation and presentation. I’ll be participating from my patio for a light, fun, informative, and hopefully smoke-free lecture.
