My Review of Trigun
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Let’s just say this was one of those animes that used to air on Saturday nights back in the day that I would every now and then come across while waiting for either Full Metal Alchemist, InuYasha, or Cowboy Bebop to air. But I never did watch a full episode or know a damn thing about this anime. So I’m just jumping into this anime blindfolded. All I know is that this was Johnny Yong Bosch’s first anime role.
Tumblr media
Who is Vash the Stampede?
A frequent question that comes up throughout the series! Rumor has it that he wears a long, red trench coat and sports a Mohawk hairstyle. Some say he’s a notorious lecher. Many recount him shooting up their villages to a pile of rubble just for the heck of it. He has quite the reputation as he has a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head and is often known as the “Humanoid Typhoon”.
Tumblr media
In reality, Vash the Stampede is…a bit of a dingus. He just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and things kinda get out of hand. But that doesn’t stop two insurance agents (Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe) from following him around to confirm Vash’s identity and keep his actions to a minimum. At first, it’s hard to tell if he’s a stupid-genius or just flighty and gets lucky one too many times. But when shit goes down, don’t be surprised when you see this doofus get serious.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Okay, what sad company did this use to belong to, Geneon, Bandai, or ADV Films? Oh, Geneon! That means good voice actors from L.A. put in really shitty roles. On the contrary, this was a fairly decent English dub. And on a severely positive note, this was indeed Johnny Yong Bosch’s very first anime role (and a main role at that). This was like fresh off his time as a Power Ranger! And I gotta give props for giving this guy a chance at voice acting. This role was the launching point to what has been a very successful career for Bosch. As for the sub, let’s just say I’m happy any time I get to hear Hiromi Tsuru in something besides Dragon Ball. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Vash is played by Masaya Onosaka (known for Bill on Pokemon, Isaac on Baccano, Jadeite on Sailor Moon, Kero on Cardcaptor Sakura, Leeron on Gurren Lagann, France on Hetalia, and Spandam on One Piece)
*Meryl is played by Hiromi Tsuru (known for Bulma on DBZ, Ukyo on Ranma ½, Yubel on YGO GX, and Mika on Gravitation) [R.I.P.]
*Milly is played by Satsuki Yukino (known for Kagome on InuYasha, Mion/Shion on Higurashi, Tae on Gintama, Amakata on Free!, Hiiragi on Natsume Yuujinchou, Mutsumi on Love Hina, and Yoruichi on Bleach)
ENGLISH CAST: *Vash is played by Johnny Yong Bosch (known for Ichigo on Bleach, Lelouch on Code Geass, Makoto on Free!, Izaya on Durarara, Artemis on Sailor Moon redub, Koizumi on Haruhi Suzumiya, and Yukio on Blue Exorcist)
*Meryl is played by Dorothy Elias-Fahn (known for Kaoru on Rurouni Kenshin, Naru on Love Hina, Tomoe on Rozen Maiden, Hakuei on Magi, Houki on Fushigi Yugi, and Amane on Tenchi Muyo GXP)
*Milly is played by Lia Sargent (known for Dorothy on The Big O and Judy on Cowboy Bebop)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Milly! I don’t need a reason, it’s Milly!
SHIPPING: I didn’t really start thinking about shipping until more than halfway into this series. I thought there might be something between Vash and Meryl, but then again maybe not! Then I saw the backstory of Vash’s “younger days” and falling for the one woman who showed him compassion.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is the same woman we consistently see in Vash’s flashbacks, Rem. Ooh boy, it’s one of those stories! So yeah, never mind my thinking with Vash x Meryl ever happening. I feel like Vash will mourn Rem’s death for a long time that I don’t think the whole thing with Meryl will ever work.
Tumblr media
And as for Wolfwood x Milly…
FUUUUUUUCK! WHY DID YOU RUIN THIS CUTE COUPLE?!
MILLY WAS HEART-BROKEN!
…At least she got to have one night of passion with Wolfy-boy before the unthinkable happened.
Tumblr media
THAT DARN CAT: If you watched this series, you might have noticed a little black cat spotted in nearly every episode. It’s there in the opening theme. It’s there in random places throughout the series. It’s there in the ending theme. What’s up with this cat? Well, there are a lot of theories surrounding this particular cat (or Kuroneko). Some say it’s really Rem inside that cat since you see it in literally every episode around Vash. Others say it’s because the creator of Trigun wanted to just mess with your minds with the kitty walking around in random places and towns. Seriously, it will always appear in every new town Vash and the gang comes across! As an avid cat enthusiast, I’m fine with whatever the result. Just as long as no harm comes to the little Kuroneko.
HALFWAY POINT: Halfway into the series we notice something more when it comes to Mr. Vash the Stampede. First of all, those horrifying scars all over his body! Second, that mysterious girl he often thinks about. I mean, we see flashes of her in the opening sequence. And third, the reason why he never kills. Vash has the ability of causing so much damage when pushed to a breaking point. One of the many reasons why he’s known as the “humanoid typhoon”! And that was perfectly shown when Vash chases the residents out of a town (so there would be no casualties), totally demolished the town during a fight, and made an indent on the moon!
Tumblr media
But the story takes a sharp-left turn into WTF territory when we learn about WHAT exactly Vash is. Vash is a plant. Vash also has a brother named Knives. And while Vash has a mentality that all beings have a right to live, Knives has a “kill them all and let God sort them out” point of view. Now the existence of Vash and Knives came with a lot of controversy, especially in the ship that they were on. But that girl who Vash cares for, Rem cared for them regardless of what they were. Rem had high hopes for a peaceful world with coexistence. Too bad Knives had other motives and killed her.
ENDING TO TV SERIES: Vash has tried so hard to keep Milly, Meryl, and Wolfwood out of harm’s way. He knows there are some pretty bad people after him, including his polar-opposite brother, Knives. Vash hates death and wants to save as many people as humanly possible. He doesn’t want to see any more needless death. Probably from his flashbacks and losing Rem! Unfortunately, this doesn’t go so well.
Tumblr media
I can see how iconic this death was now after witnessing it. Wolfwood, the priest who would hook up with Vash every now and then when they’re up against some ruffians, now finds himself in a crucial decision. He gets orders that he must eliminate Vash. And Wolfwood ends up dying instead in a very dramatic death scene. God-damn! And just that scene where Milly is sobbing freakin’ eats you up inside.
At least she had one night of passion before the unfortunate happened!
Tumblr media
Vash hates the thought of having to kill anyone. But he might not have a choice if Knives is coming after him and even hires a powerful foe from a previous episode and the guy that killed Wolfwood to take you out. Once Vash met up with Knives, he winds up having some pretty sick flashbacks of Knives. But our homeboy was able to take out Knives, the desert area gets water, and…
I’m gonna have to read the fucking manga for more, right?
Tap dancing fuck!
Tumblr media
BADLANDS RUMBLE: 12 years after the series ended, Japan decides to release a side-story in the form of a movie, bringing back our favorite characters like Vash, Wolfwood, Milly, and Meryl. And yes, reuniting the cast…in Japan.
By 2010, Geneon was as good as dead and FUNimation licensed Trigun. In short, they managed to get Johnny Young Bosch to reprise his role as Vash the Stampede. But everyone else was replaced. And surprisingly, the people they got to do Wolfwood and Milly were pretty freakin’ close to their original voices. Meryl’s voice, come on I know Luci Christian any-damn-where! Vash helps a young lady take out a big-bad guy (who turns out to be his father). And it has the feel of the original series where it’s set in a western town with lots of booze and shoot-em-ups! It’s an interesting side-story to the Trigun trilogy.
Trigun was a pretty good anime. I mean, not one of my favorites, but I can definitely see a lot of people sticking by this classic. Maybe you can chalk up my blah attitude to the fact that I’m not fond of westerns and I kinda took it out on Trigun. Or the fact that there was so much more that the anime could have covered before the end and the ending kinda felt off to me! Like I thought I was expecting more. But I suppose that’s what mangas are for. To be honest, the stories that really grabbed my attention were the back-stories with Vash and Knives and Wolfwood’s final episode.
*sniffles* At least Milly got one night of passion before he died!
If you would like to check out Trigun, all the episodes are available through FUNimation and Hulu (in both Japanese and English). And if you really like the anime, why not purchase the hard copies? Both the series and movie are available for home video.
Okay, that took me a while, but I’m glad to finish Trigun. What’s next on the FUNimation list?
Tumblr media
EEHHHHHEEEHHHE
Fuck is that supposed to mean? What is that? Is that even in English?
Tumblr media
YOU WILL BE HORRIBLY MUTILATED: The Isekai
Do you mean Re:Zero? That’s great…but that review’s not ready yet. And it probably won’t be until after April 2021! So let’s cast caution to the wind and pick another FUNimation licensed anime.
You’re watching Sarazanmai next. It’s best if you don’t ask questions.
Sarazanmai? The fuck does that even mean?!

This was a scene from Gintama 2 live action (Okite wa Yaburu Tame ni Koso Aru (The Law is Surely There to be Broken)) and Haruma Miura gave a splendid characterization of  Itou Kamotarou (伊東 鴨太郎).
This was his last project that I saw before hearing the sad news that he passed away. Tbh, I only watched movies/ series where he had no romantic interest with anyone. I first watched him in Gokusen 3 (as Kazama Ren who's still my wattpad icon until now), then Crows Zero, Attack on Titan (the only exception cos he was shipped with Mikasa) then this Gintama LA.
I know for sure I can still binge watch his other shows. But waking up in a world without him in it just hits different. I think he had played roles who died in the end just like Itou here, but with him actually gone is just so final... and heartbreaking.
I hope he found what he was looking for. My admiration for him will be forever sealed 🔐

Binge-Watching: Gintama, Episodes 58-61
Tumblr media
These episodes. THESE EPISODES. SWEET MERCIFUL BHUDDA.
HOLY FUCKING SHIT
The further I’ve gotten into Gintama, the more excited I’ve become to see what comes next. This is a show that builds on itself, pushing the limits of what it’s capable of and opening itself up to new possibilities pretty regularly. It’s constantly improving, constantly evolving, and constantly hitting higher and higher notes on the path to achieve even higher ones. And every time, I’m left to wonder how it’s going to surprise me next. Surely, we’ve reached the peak by now. This is as good as it’s ever going to get. Oh, no, wait, it just topped itself again! Okay, but this time we’ve reached the peak, etc. You get the idea.
The Benizakura arc, spanning these four episodes, just blew the entirety of the last 57 episodes of Gintama out of the water.
Holy shit. I mean, holy shit. You thought the Yakuza vs Aliens arc was epic? You ain’t seen nothing yet. Have the best action of the entire show so far! Have characters getting into situations where you’re legitimately scared for their lives! Have epic duels and surprising reversals and intense, moving character drama! Have tons of side characters we’ve met before come crashing together in a massive, multi-faction standoff! Airship battles! Close shaves! Emotional deaths! The return of Eyepatch Dio! The crystalization of the show’s thematic exploration into a single, multifaceted statement of purpose! I mean, I just- I-
Okay, I need a second.
*deep breath*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay. Okay, got it out of my system. Okay. Wow. Yeah.
Yeah, this was awesome.
Burning Down the House
It’s clear from the very first scene of episode 58 that the story about to unfold is going to be a lot more intense than we’re used to. We’re given creepy narration about moths being drawn to light out of the darkness, backed by a creepy soundtrack and eerie sound mixing, while a sinister airship hovers over Edo. It’s a million times darker and more foreboding than anything Gintama’s done, a warning that shit is about to go down like never before. And in case you missed the memo, the very next scene is Katsura seemingly being straight-up killed by Nizo the Butcher, the blind assassin from the Gintoki’s Baby arc.
These opening scenes set the tone for what ends up being Gintama’s darkest, most intense, least ironic, and most straight-up kickass arc yet. From here on out, shit hits the fan in a constantly escalating stream until it explodes into a glorious two-episode battle in the skies of Edo. The titular Benizakura is the agent of this chaos, a demonic sword imbued with an AI that learns from its battles and slowly takes over its owner’s body, wielding enough raw power to shred an airship with a single blow. Nizo, bloodthirsty and nihilistic, wields its power to raze Edo to the ground, chasing his desire to kill and destroy. And as I touched on a couple posts ago, he’s backed by the black beast himself, Eyepatch Dio (shut up, that’s his name), who wishes to destroy the country and rebuild old Japan on the ashes of the Amanto.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Shinsuke Takasugi, so it’s only fitting that his return to the show is marked by such a grandiose exclamation. We also learn more of what drives his beyond basic nationalism; it turns out that he, Gintoki, Katsura, and most of the other old resistance were all raised by a single Sensei, a guy named Shoya who was killed in the invasion. It was this event that ended up splintering them, the loss of their mentor sending them in a thousand different directions in regards to the new world the Amanto built. Takasugi’s iconic “black beast of vengeance” thrived in the darkness of losing his master, driving him to commit atrocities in the name of avenging him. He sees no other possible option than to give into the rage of the beast and make the Amanto pay for every single drop of blood spilled in the war. If that means razing Edo to the ground, then so be it.
Let the Past Die
Of course, what Eyepatch Dio fails to take into account is that while his desire for vengeance has blinded him to any other possibilities, the people he grew up with are not so blinkered. For all Gintoki, Katsura, and the rest fought to keep their old world, they’ve come to accept the new world for what it is and try to step forward into the future. The Katsura from the beginning of the series, who tried to pressure Gintoki into joining his violent crusade against the Amanto, is long gone, replaced by a ronin who’s seen firsthand the cost of conflict and the meaning to be found in life. He’s seen too much of the new world’s good, and has too many people he cares about, to ever return to that violent, nationalistic world. He knows now that Sensei wouldn’t want them to live their lives in violence. He would want them to live with hope.
The way every character in this show deals with their past is endlessly fascinating, a rich tapestry of competing visions and worldviews. Both Takasugi and Katsura still carry their old school textbooks with them, yet the meaning they draw from them is completely different. For Takasugi, it’s a reminder of what drives him to fight. For Katsura, it’s a reminder of why he must live. Both of them carry their pasts with them and let it drive them toward their goals, the convictions of their conclusions strong enough for their symbolic weight-of-the-past textbooks to guard against blows that should have killed them. And then there’s Gintoki, who just casually discarded the same textbook after he spilled ramen on it, letting the weight of the past go as he tries to step into the future. What a perfect symbol for everything he stands for.
Swords, Death, and Light
To further reinforce these themes, the guest characters for this arc are a brother-sister swordsmithing team, their personal arcs grounding the ideas of violence and moving on in the specific images of samurai and swords. The brother has dedicated his entire life to making the perfect sword, thinking to discard every other attachment for the sake of his craft. It’s through this single-minded determination that he crafts the Benizakura in his attempt to make the greatest weapon he possibly can. He sees the violence of his craft as something beautiful, a perfect art that he must strive for with all his might. It’s no wonder someone as violent as Nizo is drawn to him; he is drawn to bloodshed like moths to a light. When the demon blade ends up slowly taking over him, it’s the realization of everything the brother believed in: Nizo becomes just as rigid and unbending as a sword, a single-minded entity that only exists to kill.
Yet at the last moment, he gives up his life to save his sister. Because at the sight of her, and everyone else, fighting so hard to take his creation down, he realizes what he blocked out and left behind in pursuit of his single-minded goals. Like Takasugi, he’s let everything else fall by the wayside- friends, family, basic morals- in pursuit of this ultimately violent go. And he’s done so because it was easier to give up on the important things in life than deal with the necessary pain of truly living. It’s a lesson that Gintoki’s already learned, and he admonishes the brother not to call himself a craftsman if he can’t shoulder the burdens of life. Because in the end, his sister’s sword, crafted with care, love, and a desire to protect, is what ends up destroying Nizo in the end, cutting through the single-minded desire for violence he embodies.
A sword is only a sword. It can be used to kill or save. But the passion and intent you put into it can attract the people who are best suited to wield it. We all must be swords that protect, forging our own souls in the same iron as our blades. Only then can we truly step into the future. Only then can we understand what truly matters.
Stop, Stop, My Penis Can Only Get So Erect!
Wow, okay. That was a metric butt-ton of words on the incredible theming of these episodes, and rest assured, the way the characters new and old bounce off of these ideas in their conflicts with each other made more one hell of a dramatic standoff here. With Eyepatch Dio established as a true recurring threat, it’s clear that the battles from here on will only get more intense and personal, and I can’t wait to see that happen. But all this complex discussion shouldn’t get in the way of what really matters: these episodes were flat-out awesome. Seriously, while I can praise the thematic intentions and execution from here to Saturday, it shouldn’t be overlooked just how incredible the more surface-level battle stuff was. From an action standpoint, Gintama’s never been better. It’s never looked better, either. Gintama’s duel with crazy Nizo, Kagura backflipping to avoid bullets, Nizo losing control and going full Akira, all of that stuff was so fantastically animated and fluid and impactful and damn! Not to mention how bloody the fights got; seeing Gintama and Kagura actually suffer a lot of battle damage (hell, Kagura actually got shot!) made for some truly nail-biting moments. And there were just so. Many. Badass. Moments. Shinpachi chopping Nizo’s arm off! Kagura fighting off an entire airship with a bullet hole in her! Nizo with a demon sword on a hoverbike chopping up airships! Katsura’s return from the dead (”I’m no kid. I’m Katsura.”)! That one shot of Gintoki walking through a ray of sunlight to face Nizo for a second time! The ED song playing over Katsura and Gintoki kicking ass together!
Oh, and: KAGURA! CATCHING! BULLETS! WITH! HER! MOTHER! FUCKING! TEETH!
YEAH, THAT HAPPENED!
I’m in awe. I am legitimately in awe. This arc wasn’t just fantastic, it was a battle for the ages. Timeless themes, great animation, badass moment upon badass moment, and a soaring testament to what this show has been able to achieve. I would say this is the best Gintama will ever be, but I know better by now. It’ll top itself in time. Somehow, it’l get even better. And I can’t fucking wait.
Odds and Ends
-”We have to raise Gin into a proper adult.” Have I mentioned I love Kagura?
-WHO EVEN ARE YOU ELIZABETH
-Those are the coolest funny glasses ever, got it? Got it.
-”What a violent development. Did this turn into a different anime?” FUCKING SAME ELIZABETH
-”I’m not a lolicon. I’m a feminist.” God dammit that’s totally Oishi from Higurashi isn’t it
-Kagura being a rowdy prisoner gives me life. Look at that shit-eating grin.
-WHY DOES ELIZABETH HAVE A GODDAMN CANNON IN HER MOUTH
-Lol. “Ha ha, your plan to use me as a shield failed- oh shit I’m in trouble now.” Good thing Shinpachi came in clutch.
-”Some men just want to watch the world burn.” -Nizo, probably
-”It’s strength is equivalent to 1,000 mothers if their boobs we’re missiles.” askjdhaskjdh
-”We can’t get near him! He’s a whirlwind of death!” help my sides
-”This is drunken sword.” You’re doing amazing, sweetie.
-”You’re a hundred years too young to try and kill me, little girl!” MOTHER FUCKING KAGURA
-”It’s a new look.” aksjdhakjsdhasd
-”I’m not Lupin, I’m Zura. Oops, I mean Katsura.” OH MY GOD
Wow, that was fucking amazing. Let’s see how the fallout of these events plays out... next time!

let me know if asobase is worth watching i need more comedy after saiki
tbh i don’t find it especially engrossing, i pressed play because i saw a cute girl and sometimes it’s enough to make me watch something. comedy-wise it feels like it’s trying too hard, like there are two niches in anime, “cute girls do cute stuff” and “cute girls do dumb shit” and it’s like they tried to combine them except make the dumb shit seem cute. also one of the mcs is a fujoshi and they did the Iconic Boob Comparison in the first ep so it doesn’t impress me much.
that being said, you activated my trap card of Violet Gives Out Comedy Anime Reccs Nobody Asked For, because there’s just that amount of times one is allowed to talk about a subject on twitter before wanting to punch themselves.
comedy is my fav genre so it’s safe to say i watched pretty much everything under the tag, except the really long shounen series and anything that has ecchi anywhere near it. saiki and gintama are included but you know about them.
- sakamoto desu ga (100000000/10) best title on the market to date. everything about it is flawless. cool, cooler, coolest
- arakawa under the bridge (9/10) hilarious and even has some kind of plot. doesn’t get full marks because it’s technically a love comedy and there’s a main str8 couple, which i don’t appreciate but have to live with. it’s cool tho, the romance isn’t that in your face and it’s mostly comedy
- angel densetsu (10/10) Nobody Understands Me but i almost peed myself while watching it. well, it’s pretty niche comedy. still, golden.
- cromartie high school (10/10) it’s basically saiki’s lost cousin. also made of short skits, but the humor is much, much more ridiculous, also bonus points for wakamoto norio. some of it can also classify for niche humor but it’s just... funny as fuck
- nichijo (12/10) the only Valid(tm) title coming from kyoto animation. cute girls do dumb shit but amplified by 14. hilarious, one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen.
- tono to issho (14/10) NOBODY LISTENS TO ME but it’s downright one of the most hilarious things i’ve ever seen, and it has GACKT (which is as unappealing as something can get, but it’s hilarious nevertheless). i have a soft spot for anything that has oda nobunaga in it tho
- detroit metal city (12/10) the first time i watched it was when i was like 15 and it was with my friend, it was 4 am, we were at my house, everyone was sleeping and we were biting into our palms to not laugh out loud. upon recollecting has a bunch of Problematique things in it and i daresay that it could be called derogatory towards women but it’s not that much of a deal and if you’re willing to put up with the vulgarity, go for it
- danshi koukousei no nichijo (7/10) i think i blacked out through it entirely because i don’t remember shit but everyone likes it and i do remember it being amusing
- sayonara zetsubou sensei (6/10) is by studio schaft so it’s automatically a huge ass minus. it’s more satire than anything, and, again, a lot of niche humor. also minus points because it’s hard on fanservice and i can live without it. but it’s funny and smart, otherwise
- level e (9/10) prince baka ki el dogra is best boy
- jinrui wa suitai shimashita (9/10) it’s more intelligent than funny, but has its funny moments too. there’s a kind of uniqueness to it. vibrant colour, nice voice acting, smart plot-building.
- saint onii-san (11/10) if you haven’t seen it, where have you been for your whole life? well unless you’re very religious. tho i watched it with my hardcore christian friend and she loved it. anyway, a masterpiece
- hoozuki no reitetsu (15/10) it’s one of my favorite titles in general. i love everything about it. it’s pretty, hilarious, intelligent and fun. again, not really the best fit for super religious people and at times difficult to pick on references (the action does take place, after all, in japanese hell) but it’s a wonderful series.
- beelzebub (6/10) i remember it being super funny in the beginning and then gradually getting unfunnier as the plot thickened, but maybe it was just me
- ixion saga DT (7/10) funny overall. has elements that are personally not for me (one of the mcs is a loli, a lot of sexual humor, pretty dry as a title overall) but it did have its fine moments
- gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun (7/10) meh. everyone knows about it. if you’re into love comedies, even if it’s a deconstruction of the genre, this title is for you. funny overall but i am not a fan of str8 romantic comedies, be it a deconstruction or not, but it’s just me
- gokusen (8/10) has a yakuza theme, which i am weak for. funny.
- kachou no koi (9/10) making fun of the BL genre has never been fresher. also funny
- yondemasu yo, azazel-san (8/10) EXTREMELY vulgar. as long as you don’t mind poop jokes and mozaics it’s good tho
- gakuen handsome (1000000000000000000000000000000000/10) a masterpiece
- oruchuban ebichu (5/10) mostly (like 98%) sexual humor. the main character is a hamster.
- thermae romae (6/10) dumb and funny
- binbougami ga (5/10) had its funny moments but pretty plain otherwise. still, worth a shot in desperate times.
- ore monogatari (4/10) romcom. i had my issues with it but it wasn’t exactly terrible. funny occasionally.
- sekkou boys (10/10) yet another unappreciated masterpiece
- handa-kun (6/10) it was funny but the main character pissed me off personally
- nerima daikon brothers (??/10) tbh i don’t remember shit about it except the fact that it had some adult humor in it but was funny overall.
- slayers (6/10) it’s more adventure/action than comedy but it has its classic comedy bits. worth a watch because it brought the world the gift of lina inverse.
- jojo no kimyou na bouken (??/10) idk how to explain jojo and i doubt anyone in the world can. it’s a cult classic tho so

Mizuki Yamamoto Portrays Galaxy Express 999 Heroine Maetel in New Gintama Web Drama
The official Twitter for Gintama 2 - Yo nimo Kimyouna Gintama-chan (The Strange and Unusual Gintama-chan), the second original web drama based on Hideaki Sorachi's action comedy manga series, announced today that 26-year-old actress Mizuki Yamamoto appears as Maetel, the main heroine of Leiji Yamamoto's long-running space adventure manga Galaxy Express 999, with her visuals of the character.
This is the second time for Yamamoto to play the iconic heroine character. In 2014, she portrayed the main heroine Tonko Morinaga in the live-action TV drama adaptation of Kazuhiko Shimamoto's semi-autobiographical manga Aoi Honoo, also directed by the Gintama live-action series' Yuichi Fukuda, and portrayed Maetel for the drama. She is probably the only Japanese actress who is cast as the character twice.
Yamamoto says, "I am so glad to join the happy Fukuda team again. I geeked out over Gintama in my
junior high school days, I never imagined that such a day would come. I really want to tell myself at the
time about this!"

also just as a little psa... if you’re gonna send in anonymous sass/hate then you should probably make sure you actually hit anon next time... lmao
Tumblr media
Hmmmm I’ve thought about it fleetingly but for some reason I’m kind of uncomfortable writing for live action stuff? I don’t know why?? I use to write Marvel fanfiction ALL the time. Plus, this is mostly an anime imagines blog for now... I may get into other fandoms in the future but as for ASOIAF, no ): sorry fam
Tumblr media
tbh.... Naruto
Tumblr media
I think he would be okay as a dad. He’d be protective, selfless, and would always provide, but he’s just kinda... not dad material. Idk. I can’t explain it
Tumblr media
Tbh I am very into poise CEO Madara secretly being a lil freak on the side. That’s p much how I imagine him in a modern AU anyway. I dig this
Tumblr media
I think it was when my ex boyfriend told me to watch Death Note. Then afterward I really got into Attack on Titan, and from there I just started exploring more anime!
Tumblr media
@prettykitten123 I’ve never seen Gintama! But I kindaaaa want to start it. Maybe one day
And that would neverrrrrr happen (in Tobirama’s mind, anyway). I don’t think Madara would be okay with it either though, so it’s going to be a very tricky situation
Tumblr media
I think I have one or two Aizen requests in the box rn? I don’t get a lot of Bleach tbh. Most of the inbox is Naruto and One Piece tbh. I’ll post some Bleach soon though!
Tumblr media
I definitely say Tobirama is a dog person. Madara doesn’t really count himself as a dog person or a cat person, but he’d probably prefer a dog too, I think
Tumblr media
I think he would yesssss. He can’t not see his favorite human ya feel? And nah I don’t think he’d have ANY demigods running around tbh? He’s not about that life. Up until he met his favorite human, he probably didn’t fool around with humans at all. So really, finding a human he liked would be pretty life changing
Ooooo Izuna and Hashi’s demigod kid. Spicy. I think it could work? Izuna realllllly isn’t keen on being with a Senju though. So honestly, it would have to happen before he knew about their heritage. Otherwise, Izuna is probably steering clear of anyone with Senju blood
Tumblr media
I’ve seen one or two villains so far??? I ended on the episode where they defeated the Hero Killer, so I’m still behind lmao. But Aizawa... fuck.... that’s so daddy
Tumblr media
@evagenesis omg kajhkdjhkajhsdkhalkjshdkjf hjsd yes. Izuna isn’t allowed IN the sea but that doesn’t mean he can’t sit on the shore and pollute it with all kinds of shit. Tobirama is shaking.
Tumblr media
@ocean-wide-mind AHHHH thank you. I’m so in love with Ace it’s almost unhealthy... I have so many Ace ideas
Tumblr media
BITCH RIGHT LIKE????? I can’t play w anyone who uses Minato. Too OP. Automatic win. Not even fair
Tumblr media
I’m a Linguistics major!!!
Tumblr media
Tbh I still think he would be!!! Kishimoto just kind of hoed him on that one. I think it was just for the plot, ya feel? But who knows
Tumblr media
Ino, Hashi, Kiba, Tsunate, and Genma/Kakashi
Tumblr media
He says thank you <3 he had a good hatchday. I know this was in response to that personal post that was meant to go to my personal blog omg... I’m so embarrassed by it. But really thank you for the love <3 I appreciate it
Tumblr media
Ahhhh I tried watching a few episodes and just couldn’t get into it??? I may try again when I have the time though
Tumblr media
Second language! I grew up speaking it around the house with my family but english was my primary language! And it’s okay I do that too??? But in Japanese?? Idk why??? Anime is taking over my life. Thank you!!!
Tumblr media
SHIT yeah I gotta fix that. My blog is just so messed up because I have so many links on the master post )): fuck tumblr. thx for letting me know though!
Tumblr media
HOW COULD U HATE HASHI!!! But I feel. He’s kinda annoying lmao. But this is so good to hear yes. I love converting Hashi hoes. V good
Tumblr media
omg so I’ve never really thought about a dance AU mostly because i’m convinced Madara and Tobirama would be TERRIBLE. But Hashirama? Hell yeah. THE SPLITS. YES. Tobirama is into all that formal stuff yes yes yes. MADARA? A LATIN ICON??? hell yes

So in media people don’t seem to want to dye their hair bright colours even though that’s what the character has been established to look like. usually where no one can be assed to dye their hair it usually is a sign their movie is cheap and not going to be that great.
Tmnt live action April couldn’t be bothered to dye her hair red. The movies are based on 1987 tmnt cartoon. So she should have the red hair.
Flip side: Iris west cw. Couldn’t be bothered to dye her hair red.
Remember dragon ball z evolution where the Bulma chick couldn’t even be bothered to dye her hair blue.
There are many people who can not be bothered with dying their hair to look like the character.
A positive note. Wanda, Starfire and Black widow actresses dyed their hair red to fit the characters.
The girls who were casted as Storm in the x men films. Look great with white hair.
Japanese live action films like Gintama, fma, bleach and Rurouni kenshin have their actors all dye their hair to look like the characters they are playing and they look great.
If people don’t wanna dye their hair they shouldn’t be a character that has bright coloured hair. It’ll confuse or alienate people who are fans of the source material.
(Sonic movie trailer dropped recently and he’s iconic: Imagine making Sonic a brown hedgehog cuz it’s more natural to hedgehogs. No more blue for him).

Gintama live action movie review
I just went to a cinema in Kabukichou (didn’t pick that one on purpose but I’m pretty happy it worked out that way) and watched the live action Gintama movie. Here’s what I thought of it.
It’s pretty awesome.
In terms of plot it uses some other parts of the story (namely Shinpachis exposition from the first volume and the hunt for stag beetles for whatever reason) to introduce all the main players, but other than that mostly uses the Benizakura arc as its plot. It goes out of its way to include the Shinsengumi in the plot (even more than the original animated movie did), which, to be honest it didn’t really need, but it doesn’t hurt too much. There’s a scene with Hijikata and Gintoki where Hijikata’s part basically boils down to: “oh, you’re here to take over? Fine, I’m not really supposed to be in this plot, anyway.”
But it lead to some fun Shinsengumi jokes so I can forgive that.
They change the ending a little bit, doing a thing that’s kinda cool in its own right, but is it as epic as Zura and Gintoki beating up the Harusame while Bakuchi dancer/Shura plays like in the original Movie adaptation and original anime? No. Really no. That’s honestly the only part I’m a bit salty about because that’s one of my favorite scenes in the show.
So don’t expect too many surprises from the plot, it takes the most iconic arc and does it well, all the other major story beats are there and they land pretty well.
But does it feel like Gintama?
Yes, absolutely. The humor is totally there (my japanese skills weren’t always enough to appreciate the new jokes, but the ones I did get absolutely landed), and it’s not afraid to go crazy places. The countdown Wii sports esque animation makes a comeback and the fourth wall gets brushed at too, maybe a tad less blatantly than usual for this franchise, but still. There was no scene of only dialogue above the outside of the Yoruzuya background unfortunately, but maybe that’s just me that was missing that.
(Otae is an absolute gift in this. Her dramatic reading of Dragonball is absolutely amazing.)
The set designs are spot on, and the costume design for the most part is really amazing too. Most of the background amanto just look like they went to a costume store and bought all the crazy masks they could find, but that’s charming in its own right. But the clothes the main characters wear are all absolutely on point and the fabric they used… damn they look gorgeous. Especially Matoko, not a character I usually think about that much, has an absolutely gorgeous costume.
The actors are well cast and do a good job. I don’t think all of them look completely right for their characters (Kondo is a bit too scrawny for my understanding) but a lot of them look absolutely perfect, especially shinpachi, kagura and sougo.
Kagura does an awesome job with her role, too, the facial expressions she makes look lifted straight from the anime and Shinpachi gets several scenes where he’s just an awkward noodle and it’s so much fun.
The special effects are… of varying quality. Everything related to the Benizakura sword looks really good, but some effects look almost hilariously bad. I don’t know if there’s an uncanny valley for cartoon dogs but if there is then Sadaharu absolutely made his home there, he just looks slightly off in all scenes… Elizabesu has some scenes where she looks too shiny and pretty CGI and some scenes were she looks like just a dude in a super silly suit which I much prefer.
So, in conclusion, the movie is absolutely worth a watch if you like Gintama, it doesn’t do anything new, but what it does it does well, and I’ll definitely rewatch it with subtitles at some point to figure out all the things I missed the first time.

Hope Gintama live action would be good~ 😄😄
P.S Low-key hoping the gintama live-action can break the 4th-wall and appearance (in voice) of the Seiyuus (Sugita-san, Kugimiya-chan & Sakaguchi-san) xD (or Sakaguchi-san narrating the iconic prologue xD)
Gif source from here. (TEASER~)
