GIGCHAT : ISOLATED YOUTH
Hello all, holiday vibes getting thick today. Anyway, we're back with Gigchat series and now we have William from a Swedish indie band Isolated Youth. They already released trilogy singles. Among the other indie bands we've ever discovered, Isolated Youth is positively distinct and own such a haunting rock music they will guide you in more precise way here.
Hello, guys, let's start with introduction !
The band consist of Egon Westberg Larsson, Andreas Geidemark and William & Axel Mårdberg. We’ve known each other for a long time through friendship and blood band.  Isolated Youth is unpredictable sensitive music. A collision between fragility, melancholy and Dionysian ecstasy, beauty and intensity. The characteristics of Isolated Youth’s music is a boyish voice, crystal guitar, winding bass and innovative drumming which comes together in a burning display.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
Patti Smith, Blixa Bargeld and Ian Curtis, among many.
Can you give us guide track by track from Devotion, Bayonet, and Boytale?
We always try reach the same thing in different ways. It’s an attempt to create something truly honest and beautiful.
Devotion is a song about the sense of devoting yourself entirely to the sensitive souls, forsaken artists, bleeding boys and blue girls…
Bayonet is a song about my (William’s) sickness. And is perhaps the most aggressive one we’ve made.
Boytale depicts a boy who has reached the end of the road, it depicts a boy filled with sorrow. He sees himself in glass and realizes what he could become, what he was meant to do all along. The boy then kills his persona, and is incarnated by his true self. To be able to go on from there he has to surrender completely to his actual path. So he forsakes certainty and is ready to lose both himself and what he holds dear for his mirrored resemblance.
As a band, how it works for you between music/songwriting and publishing/management stuff ?
All is done by ourselves or people close to us, as of now.
Can you tell us about the Swedish indie music scene? Best festivals, most popular genre, and specifically the punk scene you've been into?
Sure, the best festivals are probably Kalabalik på Tyrolen, a postpunk/ New wave festival and perhaps Way Out West for it’s international acclaim. The most popular genre in the indie scene is perhaps indiepop/electronical music, where Sweden has been successful over the years.
The underground punk scene we’re familiar of, in Stockholm, exists in basements, under restaurants, and in small gatherings, although ”Klubb Död” has started to bring some of us into light, so that is where I would draw my attention if I were to explore the Swedish scene, right now.
People say Sweden is country of music, do you find it gives you advantage to be Stockholm-based band?
In some ways yes, and in some ways no. Music is much appreciated in Sweden, however there are not many bands like us out there, whereas Copenhagen and London might have more… the scene is yet to bloom again here, and we are looking forward to flower with it.
Things you like to do together other than jamming?
Many things! We are a close companionship, and we spend much time together.
Artists/musicians/bands you want to collaborate with?
We would like to collaborate with William Maybelline of Lebanon Hanover / Qual, and Anselm Kiefer.
Things you wish people would ask you?
Mainly about our music.
Give us your musical wisdom or advise ?
Although we are the beginning of our journey we would say: rehearse constantly, study the greats and devote yourselves entirely.
Plan for 2018?
We haven’t made a bucket list, but we strive to take matter in our own hands and make it a successful and beautiful year for us and our loved ones.
Give us music recommendation to listen to !
Vår, The Birthday Party and John Frusciante’s ”Niandra DeLades and usually just a T-shirt”.

MUSIC FOR MOODS : FOREST BLAKK IN A RAINY DAY
Rainy days are our company this past few months in Indonesia. If that happens in your place, the rain, you’d better try Forest Blakk’s bizarre poetic music. With acoustic guitars, piano, even the beats doesn’t make his music lose the charm and poetic side. Compare him to NF in a more pop acoustic is maybe our best description about him.
Why on rainy days anyway? Simply they’re sobering and strong at the same time. Two original songs already released officially Love Me and Where I First Found You within a year. Forest had been through a really rough life since young age and maybe that trains his empathy and ability in touching people through his music. Where I First Found You is basically a piano song, with really sad yet moving lyrics about longing, friendship, relationship, whatever emotion and perception you may proceed from the poet he made.
Love Me, got more instruments in the background, a song about loyalty, honesty, sincerety. As we said before, we’d like to compare him with NF by lyrics, yet in pop genre instead. His last release was Swipe Right, a monologue, once again a moving poets he wrote for people in hardships. We found his music is match the rain, the longer it falls, the more memories you remember. In this case, the more you listen, the more memories hit the back of your mind.

THESE INDIES #16 : EXPERIMENTAL INDIE ROCK
For today’s discovery, we’d like to share 3 bands which choose modern-experimental rock as their identity. Their music would just catch your ear from the very beginning. Let us introduce you to NO TIE FRIDAY, WIDE EYED BOY, and DEAD NATIVES
NO TIE FRIDAY (IRELAND)
No Tie Friday begins their journey by being support and opening just to shock people that they’re good enough to be headline sooner or later. Being listed as Ones To Watch 2018 by Whelan’s Dublin, they definitely an indie rock band you would fancy. Try their newest single “DELAY”, if it’s not enough yet they got more tracks for you, just lurk deeper !
youtube
WIDE EYED BOY (UK)
From the summer-springy tracks, let’s shift to evening to midnight anthem this Liverpool quartet already made for you. The band already released two singles Loving You Is So Easy and Wolves. With passionate vocals and electric beats, they enter the alternative rock scene flawlessly. Modern rock is on the hype and they make their music catchy from the very beginning, and that still works for the acoustic version.
youtube
DEAD NATIVES (UK)
Shifting a bit from the other two, we got another experimental indie rock band which successfully collide psychedelic rock and melodic britpop, making a  modern rock music with little hints of lo-fi and typical rock vocals which little raspy but still match the soaring instruments. The band hits the Europe’s attention by starting tour this year. Smell like a promising progress though.

TYPHOON COMEBACKS WITH “OFFERINGS”
The Portland-based band with eleven members made comeback with their fourth full album called “Offerings” released in January, 12. Here is what we think about it.
The album was dubbed as long awaited one, released 5 years after their last album White Lighter. Now with 14 tracks, very conceptual, cinematic, and far different from their previous total indie-rock sound. The album started with dramatic narrative introduction by Kyle Morton (lead vocalist). This album is about questions, wonder, and confusions such as  “We have all the information now, but what does it mean?”, quoted from Rorschach. As they explained in their Spotify profile this album is made as cinematic on purpose, a story and thoughts of a man who keep losing his memories and that keep him tracking his roots, purpose, and a place to be called home.
All of this song always started with a noise you normally hear before a film starts, then guitars will come following the narrative lyrics sang in grim vocals. Some of the songs keep being that calm with only guitars and piano, added by slow drums (try Coverings), yet some others were filled with multi-instruments, glimpse of their rock roots. Even they put the harder sound in Sleep (the last track), make it work as anti-climax. If you allow us, we would like to categorize this album as chill rock. Do they try to commercialize melancholia ? That’s trending and works by the way, look at Neek Lurk with the hits brand Anti Social Social Club !
Anyway, this album is quite interesting. A new approach by a band which just gone through a hiatus, something worth after 4-5 years. Something that fans always wanted and expected. This works to get new fans as well, including us to be honest. Welcome us to Typhoon fandom !

THIS IS HOLLOW COVES
It’s been a long time we don’t talk about indie-folk music. We find this Australian duo Hollow Coves with their earthy organic music you’ll admire.
Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins met few years ago and share their love of acoustic music and travelling, since then they tried to write music together and used their travelling experiences through their songs. Ryan and Matt travel to separate places and share their ideas to each other through internet along with their producer. That’s such an effective way of using technology at its best to be productive.
You all know that indie-folk is always noticed by its warm and atmospheric ambience. Hollow Coves have it all, yet their music is so panoramic. Their songs don’t merely make you feel calm when staring through your beautiful backyard or sitting at well-made city park. They sounds like the relief you feel when you are in a great deep woods, or the bank of higher cliff, looking down to the wide ocean. If we have to use only three words to describe their sense of music, it would be extensive, dynamic, and heartwarming.
Hollow Coves released their debut EP Wanderlust in February 2017.

THESE INDIES #12 : INDEPENDENT SOLOISTS
Take a look to some indie solo darlings we featured from Solo Outbreak Playlist. We have the most anticipated act Fazerdaze, the beloved Alec Benjamin, and aspiring Annika Wells.
These three have some similarities, the great love to DIY music scene, big dedication on music since really young age (like study music in college), and the fact that they always sing their heart out. One more, their names start with letter A.
Fazerdaze (Amelia Murray) steals the spotlight in the indie music scene this year by releasing her debut album “Morningside” in May 2017. The 24 year-old-University of Auckland alumni was tired of keep moving from one band to another then start her own project which then become something she can be proud of. The unique dreamy pop music she makes is such a trending genre in indie music scene, yet it doesn’t blow her away. She proves her true talent and charm, keep making outstanding performances, you won’t believe that she initially turns into music to escape her broken-home issues. Amelia told in an interview that she loves DIY concept in music, making it possible for her to get direct interactions with her listener and full control of what she want to do with her own music. The Indonesian-New Zealand singer is now on tour with her band, also will stop by in Indonesia in 21st October.
youtube
Alec Benjamin has been making music since years ago back in his dorm room in University of South Carolina. This Arizona origin singer always has that big boombox/tape along with the acoustic guitar. His first released single “Paper Crown” even featured in 2015 by Metro Lyrics and get positive reactions. After that, it takes long time for him before releasing his other self-produced music. It doesn’t clear whether he quits university or finish it, since 2016, he keeps touring around the states and regularly upload new music through his YouTube channel. Alec has really unique vocals, and abundance of ideas to create insightful lyrics based on his personal experiences. One thing we’re sure about this guy, he loves being indie so much and do perfect mixing in his own music, turn out his pop music becomes more colourful with hip-hop beats and R&B influences.
youtube
Annika Wells’ first outbreak project was the single she released last year “Break”  which caught crowd attention to her vocal ability, a good tempo and relaxing pop song. She is back this year with the project she did with Illenium “Crawl Outta Love”,still a pop song with more stronger electro elements, yet she never fail to make us recognize her vocal character in the song. Annika has really smooth soothing vocals, which will perfect for any youthful pop song. The Berklee College of Music student might be release more songs after her graduation next year. Let’s wait for that !

NOTHING BUT THIEVES TALKS FRAGILITY THROUGH THE LATEST ALBUM “BROKEN MACHINE”
Well, sophomore album is normally the momentum used by the band to sing their heart out of what happened after the first album success then infamous terrible tour experiences. Nothing But Thieves finally made one, released it on 8th September 2017 and named it “Broken Machine”, relevantly. You might have read some reviews from big medias, we’ll review it as well on our own style and hopefully much simpler.
The album came out in two version, standard and deluxe. The deluxe album includes two bonus tracks (piano version of “Particles” and acoustic version of “Sorry”). The album opens with the steady rock song “I Was Just A Kid”, works like the first statement. It chained with “Amsterdam” which incredibly has surprising tempo loop from the intro to the reff. The third track is “Sorry”, this is one of the most favorite we think. A song rich of emotions with swinging melody. “Broken Machine” is the next one, one of the most unique but dark tracks of the album before “Live Like Animals” give you more similar vibes.
“Soda” is a sad song, talk about self-criticism. The one which originally sounds raw along with “Hell, Yeah”. Then right in the middle of the album, they’re like repeating the pattern by making steady statement in “I’m Not Made By Design”. More fragility in “Particles” and “Get Better” which mostly talk about addiction, longing, and anxiety. You’ll have “Afterlife”, a track filled by clear soaring vocals and high notes, which somewhat successfully describe your uneasiness, feelings bad without knowing why. The last two songs “Reset Me” and “Number 13″ are song about luck and bad luck. Deeper, “Reset Me” might as well associated to social issues of discrepancies.  Anyway, showcasing their rock and roll side to close the album, is not a bad idea.
Overall, this album has clearer concept compared to their debut, of course. It’s like on the first album they try to put up with identities, more like run with it. The “Broken Machine” album has deeper feelings inside, not like experimenting anymore, more like you get the point of this all, maybe for Nothing But Thieves (NBT), become a band, battling in the music industry. There are many alternative rock bands talk about fragility, mostly about personal lives of the particular main songwriter of the band. Yet, NBT talk the fragility of the band as a unity. Love the fact that they teamed up to write this album on the tour bus to get enough time before the label pressure them to finish it. See, being a band is not easy, right?

CLIMB THE CLIFF WITH TALL SHIPS
Yeah, because Tall Ships will ask you to find out how worth your lives are, by climbing through a cliff of the tracks included in their latest album “Impressions” (February, 2017) to see clearer view of what you might have been missing all this time.
Tall Ships is a Brighton-based alternative rock band who had produced two LPs so far. Their very first album “Everything Touching” (2012) might be the outbreak of their musical career, but also bring them down in some cases. Remind them to the bad experiences of their first tour, and the way they grow the lyrics on their songs as a previously instrumental band. In the sophomore album, they make stronger lyrical content, still using metaphor, not too optimistic and naive, nor gloomy and full of sadness either. They find a way to give us advises without being one know-it-all.
While, they keep the signature instrumental well-blended with the lyrical style they now embrace. They never lose any fans of their old album fans, yet never bore them out by maing the same things over and over again. As an alternative rock band, we agree that they might share the loves with Snow Patrol, Walking On Cars, and also Twin Atlantic. How do you say?

THESE INDIES #11 : THE GOOD VIBES OF INDIE ROCK
After more than a month, These Indies section is back. Now presenting you the indie rock bands with good vibes. Happy weekend !
Warning : You might get addicted to these bands, believe us they offer original songs varied one from another !
Let’s start with ADVENTURES IN THE UNDERGROUND (AITU). Don’t get it wrong with some other bands with slightly same name or abbreviation though ! They are duo with two singles “Quasimodo” and “Streetlight”. Those two songs are quiet different from each other, yet still considerable as the same genre, indi-rock with itsy bitsy folk influences here and there. “Quasimodo” sounds darker while “Streetlight” will give you a good and brighter vibes. Let’s see how come they’d go in the industry, so far their music is interesting and unique, not a mere follower in the crowded stream.
youtube
Then we found ISLE. Describe themselves as alternative pop band, we find that they also fit in indie-rock genre, especially based on their recent releases. They already released an alternative pop EP “Grey” last year. As we give listen to their songs from the beginning until latest ones, we can conclude that their music is full of good vibes. The duo put piano, and synth effect, in each songs, yet in the newest single “Snow”, they add indie-rock touch which positively make the song sounds more energetic. If you love Bastille or even LANY, you might share the likes with this band.
youtube
Last, we think we’re in love with MAKESHIFT CITIES. It’s a band name, once again don’t get trapped in some song titles though. This indie-rock band will give you 90s or 00s chill, but yeah in some songs you’ll tricked that they somewhat electro-pop band or something. Their latest single “Lost In My City” intro will remind you to Alan Walker’s, but as you listen more you’ll find out that their music is alternative rock. Linkin Park’s vibes maybe? As the other previous bands we reviewed in this section, this band has varied songs from the same genre, won’t get you bored listen to them.

We finally have something for our soundcloud :) Newcomers playlist ! It will be updated regularly, showcasing you recommended fresh tunes from fresh musicians around the world. If you’re a musician, feel free to contact us to get featured in this playlist !
Today we have three newcomers for you. Check ‘em out !
1. Alaska Bycicle Co. - Something Wrong
This is the first single from the Dallas-based punk-emo band taken from their soon-to-be release EP. As punk-emo genre, their lyrics is gloomy as the tunes. “Something Wrong” perfectly describe loneliness, selfishness, which then dry someone up. Sounds like their EP will be exciting enough !
youtube
2. Noah Briton - One You Want
This is  maybe a little bit different than the usual genre we cover on our blog but give it chance to listen to hiphop tunes. “I made the single when I was going through a breakup with a girl I knew was bad for me. It gives some insight to my fans on what's to come on endless love”, he described the song. He makes more songs about his life experiences people can connect with.
youtube
3. The Solid Ocean - Freaking Out
They claimed themselves as power-pop band. Well, that is interesting way to attract more listeners as well as describe their music. This song is their second single released last year, yet highly enjoyable and powerful pop music you need to listen to. Another great  move-on anthem with exuberant vibes.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK : THE RETURN OF TURNOVER
After Magnolia (2013) and Peripheral Vision (2015), Turnover finally treat their fans by releasing third album “Good Nature” in the end of August 2017 (oh, now it’s September already, by the way).
It smells like a pattern for Turnover to keep releasing album for 2 years cycle. When “Magnolia” is their first step in music industry, “Peripheral Vision” came blow their pop-punk identity away and replace it with dreamy pop-rock one. This time, in their third biennial cycle, ‘Good Nature” marks the confirmation of that shift. It definitely has Peripheral Vision’s vibes on it, with the more flowing and breezy guitars.
Can’t get enough of comparing this record to the previous one, let’s make it clear that Good Nature is like a sunrise after the dark we found in Peripheral Vision. One more, when Peripheral Vision sounds like series of nightmare stories wrapped in relaxing dream pop, Good Nature is the compilation of great experiences, all good things you can be grateful for after all. Maybe in Peripheral Vision they embraced the gloomy lyrics to make out traces of pop-punk they used to experiment with in Magnolia. While, now they totally say goodbye to their past.
Anyway, Turnover seems to be a band who love experiments. We can’t expect what would they make in the next album. So, just enjoy the presents !

ANGELS & AIRWAVES RELEASES NEW ACOUSTIC EP “WE DON’T NEED TO WHISPER”
This 2000s successful band is back with new acoustic EP released in 25 August through the frontman Tom DeLonge. They’re known releasing last EP Cashing Shadows in 2016. The new EP is the rework of their old singles taken from same title released album in 2006. There are 4 tracks in this EP including the hit single “The Adventure”. You’ll also hear acoustic version of “Valkyrie Missile”, “Distractions”, and “Do It For Me Now”. Although, these reworks are acoustic, you’ll still get their spatial rock vibes, will give you throwback to their phenomenal “Love” album series.
Since 2015, Angels and Airwaves released their music in EP form instead of full album. DeLonge also signs that new music will coming soon as they also work for soundtrack of the on-production indie science-fiction movie “Strange Times” (also directed by DeLonge himself). The film is adapted from his previous franchise novel project.
Here is your #massivethrowback this week !
