kind of a dumb headcanon BUT i think whenever lance actually has some spare time (arceus knows he rarely has any of that) whenever he's not out and about with one of his Various Kids (kanto trio and johto quartet), i think he likes to knit. Specifically so that he can make stuff for the baby dratini in the dragon's den for the winter + stuff like hats and scarves for his own pokemon team. clair does the nearly the Exact Same Thing (crotcheting instead though), however, unlike lance, who would likely be calm about it being discovered (especially since silver would be the most likely to discover it since dad lance is real in my heart), clair would just Drop Kick the discoverer into oblivion (also likely silver. this time because it's funny)

“Ruby, not tonight,” I sigh.

My drink is smoky and the amber color reflects against my hand as I raise it to my lips. I close my eyes and savor the burn that trails down my throat. It’s smoother than my usual. Uncle Tommy left the good stuff at our table.

A birthday gift, for my favorite niece, he had said.

I’m your only niece, I had chuckled.

That’s why you’re my favorite, he had teased back.

Ruby’s playful tone pulls me back to the present.

“I only asked if you had, you know, any plans with someone tonight,” she grinned.

“My plan is to enjoy this bottle in peace and try not to think about the case load waiting on my desk for me tomorrow.”

“But you’d like to have plans with him tonight.”

It’s a knowing statement rather than a question.

“I admit to wanting quiet. And that will only be achieved by keeping him over there with Luke and you quiet.”

I give her a teasing pointed look.

“I have only question,” she waits my reluctant nod before asking. “Will tonight end in a kiss?”

“Ruby!” I groan.

I throw in an eye roll for good measure and but I can’t stop myself from looking over at him.

I try to keep my features schooled as she leans further across the table and just grins her silly grin at me. I seem the look before. I’ve seen the same body language. Hell, I’ve used the same techniques in the interrogation room.

She’s waiting for me to break.

“You do know that my profession, right? You know I can read tones and between the lines? I know all the tricks in that playbook.”

“I don’t know what you mean,” she smirks and keeps her focus on me.

I sit back in my seat and sip my whiskey again and smirk at her over the edge of my glass but not before my eyes dart in his direction again.

“As I suspected,” she chuckles. “You like like him.”

“I said I liked him. I didn’t say I wanted to kiss him.”

Not my finest defense but it will have to do because I’m unable to deny anything as he smiles that infuriating smile and walks over to me.

Callisto was the passenger in the car her father was driving - it was a rainy night, and a truck driver coming the opposite direction fell asleep at the wheel and lost control. The truck crossed the center line and slammed into the driver's side of their car. The car was pushed off the highway and into an embankment where it rolled, crushing the nose of the car, before coming to a stop.

Callisto's father Samuel was unfortunately killed in the accident, however Callisto was taken to hospital with:

Broken right collarbone

Broken right wrist

Punctured lung and bruised heart

Crushed/compressed lower legs (and later discovered torn meniscus in her left knee)

Concussion

Later discovered jarred back

Various cuts and bruises to her upper arms, chest and face, from windshield glass and airbags, including a friction burn and significant bruising from the seatbelt impact

Callisto was kept in hospital for several days for a variety of tests, surgeries and recovery. It was these bills, and the bills for her father's funeral, that has put the store in such danger of going under.

These days, she has the following scars/long term effects:

Surgical scar in the center of her chest from procedure to repair heart vessels

Surgical scar on her right wrist from procedure to place pins to heal the bone, and later remove them. Her wrist gives her grief if overused, and when the weather is rainy. She also has problems with grip strength (seen particularly when needing to open jars in the store by hand)

Surgical scar on left knee from procedure to repair/trim meniscus - her knee will ache occasionally, and she tends to favour it with a slight limp when this happens. She also tends to prefer to be sitting for this reason.

Surgical scars on both calves from procedures to ensure blood flow to all areas of lower legs post-crush.

Faint scar on chest from seatbelt burn

Various scars on her chest, upper arms and face of varying visibility - some were stitched, some simply bandaged.

No ongoing effects from the jarred back typically, though Callisto has to be careful how she twists.

Real random question but, how would you manage income disparity in a relationship? I’m from a working class household, family struggled most of my life, went to Cam, fell in love with a boy whose family are titled, went to private school, million pound homes etc, and I can’t shake the feeling of feeling inferior.

This is the best problem. I'm sorry, I don't mean to minimize, it is a real issue, it's just such a great issue.

So: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent (Eleanor Roosevelt). This is a very ~therapy~ sounding answer but I do think it's the real one: why do you feel inferior for succeeding against harder circumstances vs someone who had a much easier time of it? Is someone (or ones) making you feel inferior or is this a purely you thing? In what ways exactly are you inferior? What do you think you're lacking or not up to par in and, if they're important enough to you, can you change those things?

Because of course, there will be superficial things like what clothes you're wearing and certain table manner nuances and probably a social cue or two that you won't pick up on, but the vast majority of that can be learned or bought. And with your degree, you can go off and earn enough money to pay for the things to fit in. Whatever else you're missing, start reading vogue and world of interiors and any of the less sexy conde nast publications and you can pick it up. And ask your boy of course, he can fill you in when needed.

But if someone in his family is making you feel inferior, that's a you and your boyfriend problem that you need to talk out. Because this disparity is something the two of you should be navigating together, it's not purely a you issue and you will definitely need his support if the issue is coming from within his house. And I want you to be honest with yourself (and him) about whether he's doing anything to make you feel that way -- intentional or not, it's important to nip this in the bud before it festers and rots.

I know class is complicated and highly contentious here in the UK but you've jumped the system by going to Cambridge, now go do something fabulous for a career and you're sorted. Go enjoy the houses and the holidays and remember that generosity is a two way street - by graciously accepting gifts, you're being polite and respectful to your hosts. Be kind and grateful, always show up with a hostess gift (homemade or thoughtful is definitely best in this case, flowers are always a good backup), and enjoy yourself. He loves you, you love him, this problem is completely overcome-able as long as you get out of your own head. You've got this babe.
