What Annette Lawrence does, how she communicates with the world, is magnificent...but nothing is more MAGICAL than an artist who LOVES what they do. Lawrence was able to find joy and meaning in each day...LITERALLY. She turned the most common events into one-of-a-kind stories using overlooked materials. So let's take a page from Annette's book, and fall deeper in love with our own creative voice!

Annette Lawrence had her own fascination when it came to film production! She'd spent the entire afternoon watching our DP: Julye Newlin, and the rest of the crew set up equipment and rearrange her studio. Lawrence was no stranger to documentaries, but we're more than happy to see that she enjoyed our process. We were ALL artists: working, learning, and building "Life Through Art" together!

One of the greatest advantages of holding so much of Ezekiel Gibbs' folk art is our privilege to glimpse into a different time. The Earth is an old place, and our connection to it runs deep. We can never forget that...not today or any other day!

We want to send a HUGE thank you to Conduit Gallery for their flexibility and enthusiasm! Gibbs Media Group was granted early access to the building and allowed to film the opening night of Annette Lawrence's 2020 exhibition: Exception: Works on Linen and Paper. The resulting footage did wonders for the "Installation Art" documentary and the Life Through Art series as a whole.
We can't thank you enough, Conduit Gallery!

We're sending a HUGE thank you to Michelle Barnes: Co-founder and Executive Director of the Community Artists' Collective! She and her organization played a huge role in Annette Lawrence's blooming career in the 1990s, and were generous enough to relay that experience in our docuseries: Life Through Art! We couldn't have done this without you, Michelle. Best wishes to the Community Artists' Collective!

Any painting that celebrates Ezekiel Gibbs and his wife, Josephine, is a welcome work! By the time Ezekiel started drawing and attending the Glassell School's Older Adult Art Program, Josephine had already passed away...but their memories, of course, lived on. We're glad to see Ezekiel could channel his grief into creativity.

Supply carts at the ready, portfolios on the walls, paper and glue covering the tables...Annette Lawrence's art studio was the perfect location for Installation Art's most important interview. Thanks again, Annette, for inviting Gibbs Media Group into your creative space. The atmosphere made all the difference!

Ezekiel Gibbs' art legacy began at 83 with his insatiable desire to draw his life stories until his death at 103...making him the oldest Folk Artist known! After his wife's death, Gibbs began revisiting all of the memories of his life through artwork, and preferred oil pastels, watercolors, and crayons for his paintings.

The least enjoyable part of media work is having to BE PATIENT. I want things to happen as soon as possible, but you have to be clear and focused to help pull it through.
"You have to articulate with the team what the goals are. You have to really plan and plan and plan in order for things to be organized and be successful. Setbacks still happen, but I try not to focus on those thoughts. I know that everything that I’m doing is something that’s going to make a difference!" - Linda Gibbs

Even though our featured subject was technically Ezekiel Gibbs, renowned Folk Artist: Bill Traylor, was mentioned TWICE in our "Folk Art" documentary! It appears no professional can speak to Folk Art without giving respect to Traylor's legacy.
So thank you, Bill, for paving the way for American Folk Artists like Ezekiel Gibbs. We're so glad our docuseries was able to pay tribute like you both deserve!
