does anyone know what this plant it? this is in new jersey but we have no idea if it is native or not. my coworkers who know about plants and no plant identification app have no good answers. it hasn’t flowered yet as of June 7th but looks like it might on top.

Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes)

Distribution: Found across the United States, up to southern Canada and down to Mexico, Jamaica and Cuba.

Habitat: Mainly found in deciduous forests and citrus orchards.

Diet: Adults feed on nectar and the liquid from animal waste; plants fed on include lantana, azalea, bougainvillea, soapwort, dame's rocket, goldenrod, Japanese honeysuckle and milkweed. Caterpillars feed on the leaves of plants in the citrus family.

Description: The giant swallowtail's larva is also called the orange puppy due to the fact that it's a pest of citrus trees, including orange trees. In order to protect itself from predators, the caterpillar camouflages itself by imitating the appearance of bird or lizard poop. If this doesn't fool a predator, it has a trick up its sleeve—or more accurately, its head; it can deploy an osmeteria, which is a brightly-colored Y-shaped growth, whose appearance is often accompanied by a strong, foul odour. This only really works to startle smaller predators, though, such as lizards and other insects.

Due to global warming, the giant swallowtail's range has gradually expanded northward. However, they're still only able to overwinter in areas of the deep south. They can be spotted fairly easily—adults have a wingspan of up to 19 centimetres, making the giant swallowtail the largest butterfly in North America!

Nacogdoches is one of dozens of Texas cities that have planted pollinator gardens, providing way stations for the long monarch migration

Take the people of Nacogdoches. Billed as the “Garden Capital of Texas,” the town of 35,000 has long promoted beautification efforts, including projects with the local Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Gardens. Nacogdoches recently went a step further, joining more than 600 cities nationwide in taking the National Wildlife Federation’s Mayors’ Monarch Pledge. By signing on, leaders commit to expanding monarch habitat and educating residents about pollinators.

In making their improbable journey, monarchs need all the help they can get. East of the Rocky Mountains, the butterflies head south at the end of summer and, after overwintering in central Mexico from late October to March, begin their long return north. Milkweed, essential for monarchs, and other nectar-producing plants serve as way stations, providing nutrients and shelter en route.

Much of the monarch’s decline in recent decades can be linked to the disappearance of these way stations, often due to development. By designing and planting a series of pollinator-friendly gardens beginning in 2019, Nacogdoches became a champion of monarchs and other pollinators, sending a message of hope for many migrating species.

That positivity extends to the human population. “The four monarch gardens in Nacogdoches provided opportunities for a diverse group of people to learn about and plant these pockets of conservation,” says Dawn Stover, representative for SFA Gardens at the time of installation. “We had generations of gardeners making these projects come to life.”

Selecting native flora not only helps pollinators. It also educates home gardeners who might have overlooked certain plant species. “As people watch early-blooming penstemons give way to summer wild bergamot and giant cornflower, then transition to fall with goldenrod and asters, they become enchanted with the living world,” says Kim Conrow, past president of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

The Nacogdoches gardens—each registered as a Certified Wildlife Habitat®—were the result of an effort between the city’s Parks & Recreation Department, NWF’s Monarch Conservation Urban Outreach and Monarch Stewards programs, SFA Gardens and the Native Plant Society of Texas, with a donation by the James A. “Buddy” Davidson Charitable Foundation. “[These gardens] are a way for us to celebrate the great partnership and collaboration with the communities to support monarch migration,” says Rebeca Quiñonez-Piñón, climate-resilient habitats senior manager and monarch recovery strategist for NWF.

Nacogdoches is among dozens of Texas cities that have taken the NWF pledge—currently the second most of any state. Others include the Lower Rio Grande Valley city of McAllen, where the renowned Zapotec artist Irving Cano’s mural “Destino Monarca” was installed in 2022.

Both the mural and the gardens are “conduits helping us to raise awareness about the situation of the monarch butterfly but at the same time increase native habitat in urban areas while we educate others,” Quiñonez-Piñón says. “We can see the demonstration gardens as creating art, too.”

During World War 1, rubber was recognized as a strategic commodity as supplies ran short in the industrial world. The U.S. imported rubber from Southeast Asia and the East Indies. In the 1920′s, Thomas Edison began his search for a home-grown source of rubber. 

The rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, is not the only source of latex rubber and after testing more than 17,000 plant samples, Edison decided on goldenrod with a yield of about five per cent latex. Edison selected the varieties that seemed to have the most potential, divided the roots, planted them separately, divided them again, and started crossbreeding. It was time-consuming; but a giant goldenrod about fourteen feet tall yielding about twelve per cent latex was ultimately developed.

Henry Ford and Harvey Firestone became interested and put big money into the project. Vast fields of goldenrod were planted, processing factories were built and goldenrod tires were introduced to the market in 1929. Unfortunately, 1929 was not a good year for business in general and the invention of the synthetic rubber Neoprene (made from petroleum byproducts) in 1931, doomed this fledgling industry. During World War 2, German synthetic rubber factories were specifically targeted by Allied bombers.

My second post about spending some time with the bayside wetlands of South Padre Island 💙

1st pic ~ Me : ) I made the necklaces and the copper braid spiral I'm wearing. The braid spiral has a mother of pearl shell bead on it. The longer necklace I'm wearing is made with a large mother of pearl shell piece that I found near a different wetland location in my city that used to be underwater. My beaded strand earrings are made by my best friend, with shell beads at the top and shell moons

2 ~ wild Goldenrod! Goldenrod is a medicinal plant with many properties. Though so far I've only used it in teas intended for respiratory health and allergy relief

3 ~ A little channel of water lined with Black Mangroves. I've been learning more about them lately. These trees are extremely important for the ecosystem, as they provide shelter and hunting grounds for many wildlife species. Black Mangroves also trap carbon dioxide in their roots, and stabilize the shoreline by preventing erosion, protecting the state of the ecosystem

4 ~ a section of some smaller and more shrub-like Black. Mangroves

5 ~ storm clouds rolling in as I rested on the beach. I left as soon as it began to drizzle. I found a good few beautiful and fully intact giant Atlantic cockle shells. I find these by walking about knee deep in the water, and looking next to crab and sand flea holes in the sand for the shells discarded after they've eaten their mollusk meal

6 ~ some species of lichen that I saw all over sections of the bayside boardwalk. If anyone could identify it, I'd appreciate it!

7 ~ A colorful bird (I don't know this species' name yet : ( using the shelter that Black Mangroves provide fish as his hunting ground

8 ~ The tallest I've seen Black Mangroves grow! These were easily 15+ feet tall!

9 ~ gator tracks? I'm not sure as I'm unfamiliar with identifying tracks, but I'd love to learn! There were also flattened beds of grass nearby, which also made me think these may be gator tracks

10 ~ a wide area of Black Mangroves! These beautiful trees can go on for miles when given the opportunity ✨️

Anon I am violently rotating you in my mind.

C&tMB is the fan tag for Caroline & the Magic Buneary. It's actually the second series in the 'Magic Buneary' franchise. The first was "Ari and the Magic Buneary."

The best way I can describe it is like... magical girl shonen? The Buneary (her name is Melodica) turns into a giant sword. Caroline's a student at the Goldenrod Academy for Girls. She's training to become a fighting-type Gym Leader. Her rival, Tara, is a punk trainer from Hoenn. Top-tier red and blue colored rivals.

The villian's name is Lady Knight and her companion's an evil Florges. LET ME TELL YOU the fandom goes CRAZY for her. Me too tbh, she's a Femme icon. There's also the Lady's right-hand woman, Cassidra. Fun fact, her design is based on the Orrish bodybuilder Elkain.

The show is so funny because some times it deals with things like teamwork then there's a whole episode where Caroline deals with homophobia. There's a whole arc where Caroline becomes more masc and people bully her for it?? Wild.
