Sucking Gangrene Out of a Wound
So last year, there was this feeling of incredulousness about Van Helsing's little story about how Jack saved his life! People had heard of sucking poison out of a wound, but actual gangrene? Jack must have used medical equipment right? He didn't actually use his mouth, RIGHT??
Unfortunately for all of you lovely readers, not only didJack suck the "gangrenous blood" from Van Helsing using his mouth , but its very likely Bram Stoker really did mean it in earnest! Because SCIENCE. Those sciencifically minded bros were SO OPEN MINDED!!
I had the unfortunate displeasure of reading excerpts from this book on Victorian medical history, about all the ways doctors and surgeons had to be incredibly quick thinking and open minded as to not, y'know, kill their patients. One of the famous examples given is of Eric Erichsen, chief surgeon at London's University College Hospital, who used his mouth to suck out infectious blockage from a woman's throat. Yup you heard that right! HIS MOUTH.
Literally, a woman came in for surgery because she had a blocked larynx, most likely laryngitis that had gone on way too long. And during surgery Erichsen realized even though he cut through her throat, the offending material was difficult to get out. So he just used his God give mouth and OH MY GOD GROSS. Anyway, she survived the operation??? He died when he was 78 so this operation didn't impact his health AT ALL??? Yeah.
So anway....yeah. Do I think Bram Stoker knew of this case? No, although three of his brothers were medical doctors. People have also suggested Thornley Stoker was the direct inspiration for Van Helsing because of implied spoilers. But I think he had heard of enough similar tales of surgery gone wrong that it doesn't seem too out of place.
Of course that's not even touching the thematic and symbolic importance of blood sucking in a novel all about Blood Sucking....Either way, yes it would have been entirely possible for Jack to really save Van Helsing's life from succumbing to gangrene. Everyone say Thank You Jack!

Whumpee watching gangrene slowly creep up their limb, begging whumper to help them at every possible opportunity.
Just imagine them staring at the line. Hypochondria has them convinced it’s further along than it is. Phantom fevers set in too soon and their heart seems to seize up with the stress and they’re convinced that’s their last breath every. single. time.

Goretober IX: Amputation with a Side of Amputation
Get ready for another run-on sentence nearly devoid of commas sorry not sorry we gettin to the end of the @coyotehusk goretober woweewow
←Previous - Castys Masterlist - Goretober Masterlist - Next→
Ingredients: amputation/dismemberment, gore, gross infected wound descriptions, wet gangrene
If there was an award for most infected leg in the world, Castys was pretty sure he’d win it.
Things only got worse after the worms were gone. His flesh changed from yellowish to red, swelling more and more as the days went on. He started to develop a fever, and he ended up being sort of grateful that Kuro was so cold, so her touch actually felt sort of soothing aside from the skin-crawly feeling. Even if she let him off of the table, he doubted he’d be able to move much between the pain in his leg and how dizzy he was, so still being strapped down was fine, just uncomfortable. And the smell was awful, like there was a rotting corpse in the room, and given what he guessed was happening to his leg, that wasn’t far off.
Red shifted to black, pain to numbness, clarity to fogginess. Whenever he looked down at it he had to laugh, it was all shiny and red and yellow and black and wet and it smelled and it hurt and it didn’t feel like anything. It was dying, for real, so infected that his own deaths wouldn’t change a thing, and there was only one way to fix it, and he wasn’t sure if he’d feel it or not, but that didn’t matter anyway, there was that ax again it was coming right down towards his leg and he felt it it hurt it stung it burned it came down again and this time there was a crack it had to be wrenched out before falling once more and now it was off he saw her pick up his splotchy necrotic leg and toss it to the side her eyes were so so white they saw right through him they saw his fear and they acted on it the ax came down again on his healthy leg for no reason at all or at least none that he could think of besides making him scream again and struggle and that struggling only buried the blade deeper made things worse now his legs were both gone it was funny she was laughing this wasn’t over yet he was so cold everything was so far away but the ax was so close it was right under his shoulder now once twice done onto the other side the only limb left and he barely registered it being chopped off as he slipped into the cold endless darkness and hoped things would be better on the other side but that was pointless-
For the first time in what was probably weeks, Castys came back to a normal body. His neck and chest were still strapped down, but his new limbs weren’t, so that was something. They were sort of awkwardly bent around the amputated ones still strapped to the table, which was certainly a feeling, the cold, bloody stumps pressing up against him. Kuro didn’t stop him from undoing the buckles holding him down, so he quickly loosened them and jumped off of the table, backing away a bit.
“Why the hell did you cut off my other limbs?”
Kuro shrugged. “I had the ax and just felt like it, and your screams were so nice. You’re better now, so what does it matter?”
Castys looked down at himself, the bloody rings around his arms and legs where the ax had fallen, the jarringly clean skin on the regrown limbs. What did it matter? He was fine now, and all that pain was just a memory. What was one more awful memory in a sea of awful memories?
Still, as unlikely as it seemed, he hoped he could make some better ones soon.

so uh massive trigger warning to anyone who's sensitive to body horror or extensive medical issues, but an update on my moms condition:
im on mobile bc im about to try to nap before lunch time and im hoping i can get the read more to pop up but
my mom had a skin infection that spread, I mentioned this I think. Today makes an official week she's been hospitalized because antibiotics weren't improving her condition enough.
and uh. my diabetic mother who's had a broken hip since December that's still healing has gangrene! Yeah! YEAH! LITERAL GANGRENE FROM A SKIN INFECTION! A BOIL started this.
In. In the groin area.
And when I talked to her wound care nurse, she told me ANY boil can do that. Quite literally, any boil, any abscess, any minor infection can do that, even to non-diabetics. So, please be safe. My mom is looking better, but she's also missing most of the tissue along her left thigh-groin crease. And more may need to be removed.

Goodhart's Law
If you don't want to amputate a gangrenous limb because your office has the lowest rate of amputations in the region and an increase in amputations will result in your license being reviewed by the board, then the "number of amputations" metric has been Goodharted into uselessness.

Just finished art for Day 23, so here’s batch three of my Charoctober2022 art! Like before, mostly sketches, but Day 19 is skipped here as it’s a bigger project. Will post later. This set has mostly mairuma, some TOH, and some Mercury Green OCs (also Tangled?). Warning for blood and stuff, but all of that is tagged. More individual description on Twitter.
