before I go to sleep -- today i played NARRENSCHIFF! i'm in love with the art and atmosphere of this game-- the visual storytelling is phenomenal and goes in tandem with the prose. heavy on the puzzles and exploration. I highly recommend it if you're looking for surrealistic psychological rpgmaker stuff similar to OFF or Hylics 2

I recently recced someone Dishonored, and in doing so realized that the reasons I love the series and the reasons game reviewers and media outlets loved the series are actually very different. So whatever you've heard about it being an inventive and mechanically intricate immersive sim, here's why you should actually play these games:
Corvo, the depressed dad who is also a rampant kleptomaniac who does a little bit (or a lot) of murder but it's ok because it's not as much murder as the ones he's murdering
Daud, the depressed ace/aro king who does one little war crime that everyone won't shut up about and is then sad for the rest of the series
Emily, the depressed empress who was actually pretty bad at ruling and needed to go murder a few people (or a lot) in order to get better at it
Billie, the depressed criminal who somehow ends up being a video game protagonist as a 40+ year-old black lesbian woman and is perpetually done with everyone's shit
The Outsider, the depressed god who is constantly soaking wet and torments people by giving them the power to do war crimes while also gleefully watching them slowly go insane
And that's just the major players! You also get as a bonus, in no particular order: deep worldbuilding, immaculate aesthetics, comically evil fucked up little guys, comically tragic fucked up little guys, talking rats, time travel shenanigans, slapstick comedy, and as much poetic justice as your twisted little heart desires.

garage: bad dream adventure is genuinely so good. it is exactly what those fever dreams you had as a child with only slivers of consciousness felt like. the characters feel so human despite the rust and fetus-like appearances. the body horror that the 'shadows' possess really feel like what internally one feels like, the state in which you do not feel like your human body. the music. the alien-like setting. the lack of jumpscares. just anxiety. tomomi sakuba is such a genius despite the interesting art he makes. i'm so glad this game was found 20 years later and got rebooted despite how freaked out it made me at first.

Yo, hey, also, if you're an anxious and/or stressed LGBTQ+ person like myself, and like little games about tasks, like Stardew Valley or My Time at Portia or stuff like that, check out Hokko Life.
It's one of those cute little "do things" games, and there are some things about it that I really, really love:
In a lot of these games, there's a set town structure and cast of characters. In Hokko, there are some keystone elements. But each save file has a different "town area" map that you get to build and expand your little town into. There are two residents to begin with, other than you and the shopkeepers in the main town area (separate), and THOSE COULD BE DIFFERENT. From what I can tell, there are at least 4 possible starter residents, and you can get different combinations per save file.
The days are looooooooooong. This is different from Stardew, for example, where you can feel really pressed to "get everything done" in one day. In Hokko, you have PLENTY of time. And you have the option to take a li'l nap at your house if you want to, so you can skip 2 hours or 6 hours without losing the whole damn day. Or just...take a lil nap.
There are NO GENDER OPTIONS in character creator. You start with the same starter outfit, and have 100% of the starter customization options. Everyone calls you "they/them." A good number of the residents are "they/them." You are just...nonbinary/gender neutral/agender. Periodt.
You are the only humanoid. Everyone else is basically stuffed animals. The first folks you meet are a pink elephant who looks like she maybe has vitiligo and a giraffe with a general store who has extremely Dad Jokes Energy. There are all kinds of other interesting animal folks with different personalities. My game has a green emo/skater pig who seems like they might be a stoner and possibly vegan. Definitely cares about their carbon footprint.
Everything is SO CHILL. There's not really energy to manage or anything, you don't get hungry, you don't have to run around making sure you talk to everybody enough so you don't get less popular. Even if you fail a task for a resident...nothing bad happens. Or at least, that I can tell so far. Just like, whoops. Couldn't find that fish. Oh well. I can make you that paint, though. No worries. All good.
When you DO complete tasks, you get clothing items. And like...the first one I got was a "striped skirt" or something. And I was like, "Oh, that looks kinda-sorta-almost like a nonbinary pride flag. Cool." And then I got some yellow shoes, and a red jacket. And then a "Happy Knit Sweater," which was DEFINITELY ABSOLUTELY a trans pride flag pattern! And then a tee shirt with rainbow sleeves and a rainbow pocket? So like...THEY GIVE YOU LGBTQ+ PRIDE MERCH FOR YOUR LI'L NONBINARY PAL. And then I realized I very much had trans flag wallpaper in my house. 😂 I freaking love this.
You can MAKE YOUR OWN FURNITURE. There's a whole subset of customization and item creation where you can just...design your own furniture and decorative items from almost scratch. You unlock sets of shapes for the crafting & design table, and then you can go into a 3D design space and just...put some wooden spheres together however you want! Add a leaf shape! Put a brass "7" on it! Go crazy! And then you get to save your design and you can craft it again later if you want to make more, or sell them. It just...becomes an item in your game.
The music is super chill. Because of course.
The fishing system is good, for the way I like to play. It's very easy to see the fish, it's very easy to know when you need to "hook/catch," and following the system to reel in is easy to understand. It requires a little effort, it's not an auto-catch, but it's not stressful. It's a TASK, but not a HEADACHE. And you can do it without bait and still be fine.
There's a whole entire thing around catching butterflies. You can just frolic around all day in your pride-wear catching butterflies if you want. It's lovely.
You can save and exit at any point. SUPER IMPORTANT. Can't tell you how many times I've felt some stress about like, "AAAARRRGGGHHH, I have to get to a good spot to stop this Stardew day, or just start over again..." Nah. Hokko, you just hit escape, "Save & Exit." When you load up again, you'll be in your house, with the same stuff on hand/in your backpack.
I actually kinda also like that there doesn't seem to be a romance component? Like, that's neat and all when it is available, but I don't always want the townsfolk coming onto me just because I've given them sufficient eggs or whatever. I might have needed to do those quests to advance the plot, or get a new shovel or something. And maybe I'm not actually down to clown, homie.
Anyway, I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. Got it in the Steam Sale. I think it's not crazy expensive even regular price? My one issue that I'm running into is that the wiki for it is like...zero content. Or just not much in-depth stuff beyond the very bare basics for some of it. So when I want info or hit a snag, I been using Duck Duck Go on that biz, or hitting the Steam Forums. Not the worst thing in the world.

Playing “The Things You’ll Do For Love!” and naming the player after one of my kins is honestly pretty validating.
I usually name them Peter or Doe, due to those being the most fitting story-wise.
It’s a really fun game, too, just on its own. I recommend it for those who like Yandere Romance games.

Cozy Grove is genuinely one of the most beautiful games I've ever played
Everything from the dialogue to the basic premise to how unique it is to just the general vibes like the graphics and soundtrack
It's all just absolutely masterful
And one of my favourite things will always be just how human all of the spirits feel, despite being- Literally bears. Or foxes/seagulls/wolves/a tree/a bit of corn yk??
Anyway my lord is this phenomenal
Basically I'm getting to the end of quite a lot of the first few character's stories which means they're getting very emotional and I'm getting very sentimental and sappy and my lord this game is incredible and beautiful and wonderful and delightful

Kairo
So I need to blog about Kairo, because the computers and tunnels post reminded me of this strange and beautiful game.
Kairo is what I can only describe as a surreal Brutalist walking sim puzzler. Yes, as in “the more conk they crete, the more Brutalismer it is” Brutalism. I hope you like concrete textures and cubes because Kairo has a lot of that. It’s also among the handful of games that I think have irreversibly altered my brain chemistry (positive).
Kairo came out in 2013, so I wasn’t that young and impressionable at the time, but something in this game definitely struck a chord with me. It’s relaxed, contemplative, minimalistic. Scenic despite the simplicity of it, calming despite the starkness around you. Take a look at the Steam page linked above for some screenshots to get a sense of the visual style. (I used to have a bunch of screenshots I used for desktop backgrounds at one time but they seem to have vanished, so I unfortunately am not including images in this post.)
It’s a lot of simple, geometric, Brutalism-adjacent structures in various coloured light washes. But it’s... pretty in its own way. I think this was the piece of media that helped me come around to this sort of aesthetic. Previously, like the computers-and-tunnels post, I liked a grungier, more complicated feel to my industrial spaces, a la the Half-Life games. Bit Kairo... Kairo was serene.
The sound design, too, reflects this calm starkness of everything. The soundtrack is super ambient and synthy, usually calming and occasionally spooky. There are only two tracks I could even say come close to being “intense,” those being the menu theme and one particular area that seems designed to put you a bit on edge. The artist Wounds does a great job of conveying the empty, otherworldly vistas of Kairo. (It’s great reading music, too. Check it out here.)
I was rapt when I first found it, though it certainly helped that a favourite YouTuber at the time was how I discovered it. (Playlist here, KurtJMac’s run is commentated but he’s pretty lowkey overall.)
The puzzles range from extremely simple perspective/movement puzzles to moderately challenging password puzzles, excluding two notably obtuse examples - one where you have to memorize a series of notes and play them back in a room very far away, and another that (ideally) requires you to collaborate with other players to reveal the whole solution. Both of these thankfully are optional, and can be looked up online now that the game has been out for ages. Both, I believe, are also required for the game’s secret (not “true”) ending.
I’m not sure what else to say other than give it a try/watch it. I really cant recommend it enough, honestly. It’s very cheap on Steam and isn’t terribly long, complicated, or hardware-demanding. (Though if you do play it, I recommend turning off the visual-noise filter in the settings. It’s easier to look at and looks better without it.) Kairo is less a game and more a powerful vibe, I guess? It’s a walking sim with some puzzles in it, but it has a very unique feel to it. On reflection I think it’s due for a comeback; it has a lot of the “liminal space” feel that internetizens seem to be going nuts for lately, but predates it all by a clean decade.
It’s near and dear to my heart, and a game I come back to every now and then for a chill pick-me-up.

I saw the ask about games you're into, and I would say you should give Baldur's Gate 3 a shot! Idk how you feel about turn-based combat, but the storytelling going on in that game is *chef's kiss*. It's hands-down the best rpg I've ever played. Plus, you can really dig into your companion's backstories and side-quests (plus there's *plenty* of amazing romance options)
Ohhhhh yes, I've been seeing it ALL OVER and have been yearning to play it since I heard the talk of the juicy companion backstories and romances. And while turn-based combat isn't my fave thing in the world, for a good rpg, good story, good companions and just good fun? You bet I'll give it a try 😊
Review pending on Baldur's Gate 3, folks!
But thank you for the rec! Definitely one that's on my list!

apparently cat in the box and tide up by gustav are both 50% off on steam until november 2 (only $3.99!!!)! I love this creator's works and think their games are a fantastic use of the modern RPGmaker engine; i recommend CitB if you like classic RPGhorror combined with a solid story/theme and Tide Up if you're interested in a nonlinear atmospheric environmental horror, similar to fear&hunger

I did once see a clip where the main character was gonna get shot and someone told him that there was porn on the floor, so he dodged it just in time from that. And that made me snicker. I’m a very simple woman honestly. XD

Hey, this fun little game Legend of Keepers is temporarily available for free. It's a sort of tower defense/turn-based RPG hybrid where you set up a dungeon and defend it from incoming adventurers. I recommend checking it out!

Ryuutama
What It Is: Ryuutama is a Japanese TTRPG system developed for use by professional gamemasters (GMs). The system emphasizes place, seasonality, personal & communal growth, and the stages of life.
Why You Might Like It: Ryuutama is crunchy (rules and arithmetic intensive) in a way a lot of people really like, but because it was specifically developed for use by people managing multiple simultaneous parties and games, there's an enormous emphasis on planning, setup, and documentation. This would be a great game for a new GM who is learning the tempos and rhythms of building and executing adventures and how to think about them. Ryuutama is also structured around a distinct and interesting world that emphasizes journeying. If you want to run or play a game about travel and building connections on the road, this might interest you.
Where Have I Heard of It: To my knowledge there is not an actual play podcast of this game.
Where Can I Find It: You can pick up Ryuutama here.

Dress Up Time Princess UPDATE!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The new update allows players to see their avatar in the room where it does things like pick out a book to read, stare outside the window, lay in bed, do yoga poses, and even stare into the void.
My only request is for shadows to be added under the avatar's feet bc rn, the avatar doesn't look like it's completely part of the scene.
Still a cool update tho!
