"Version up" The EP review

     

         "Version up" is an EP from the new girl group ARTMS. The group consists of 5 members Heejin, Hasuel, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and, Choery. These five girls are former members of the girl group LOONA under Blockberry Creative. In early 2023 the group LOONA filed a lawsuit against their parent company (Blockberry Creative) and won. This resulted in a contract termination of the group. Five of the girls later sign a new contract from Modhaus a company under Jaden Jeong (The creator of loona). Now after a long wait, ARTMS is here with ODD EYE CIRCLE (the subunit) taking the world by storm.

         "Version Up" is comprised of 6 tracks. Let's review them one by one.

Did you wait? (The intro)

After the lawsuit has settled down the sub-unit ODD EYE CIRCLE (Formally named LOONA/ODD EYE CIRCLE) is back. In July the label Modhaus dropped this EP. This track is an intro to the EP. The track sampled various loona songs such as Sweet Crazy Love, Girl Front and Loonatic. But this time it features a new beat. Essentially, telling us that the new era for ODD EYE CIRCLE is beginning.

Air Force One (Title track)

The track Air Force One serves as a title track. It has a new impression and message. The meaning of the lyrics is about leaving your old self to embrace a new era. This is implied by the use of high heels and sneaker imagery. 

Je Ne Sais Quoi

This track encapsulates the essence of the word irresistible attraction and anticipation. It did quite a wonderful job telling the story by repeating the phrase Je Ne Sais Quoi meaning something enigmatic or unexplainable.

Lucid

As a track, Lucid explores the realm of anticipation much like Je Ne Sais Quoi but this time the track is more dreamy. As its title suggests, it is quite lucid. Personally, I think both Lucid and Je Ne Sais Quoi have a naughty almost lustful tone. Which makes me like them a little bit more as a concept.

Love me like

The track itself is a love song about the tingling sensation and warm feelings of love. However, it also portrays the sad side of love like the anxiety and the fearfulness. Given its subtle lyrics and relaxing beat, I couldn't help but get lost in its charming allure.

My Secret Playlist

As the ending track, My Secret Playlist takes us back to the LOONA date of ODD EYE CIRCLE. It serves as a tribute the the old group. But also the beginning of something new for the girls.

After listening to "Version Up" I am nothing short of excited for what the future holds for ARTMS or any other group from LOONA.

LOONAVERSE LORE:

In the LOONAVERSE, there are 3 planes: Earth, MIddle Earth and Eden. With those planes also come subunits. (This is all pre-debut but it does help.)

LOONA 1/3= Earth

Odd Eye Circle= Middle Earth

yyxy= Eden

LOONA 1/3:  Heejin is the creator/god of the LOONAVERSE, as seen in her ViVid music video. In the universe, the world is initally black and white. Heejin doesn't like this. She decided to fill the world with color but she needed help. That's when she created the primary colors first: Red (Kim Lip), Blue (Jinsoul) and Yellow (Hyunjin). She then creates Middle Earth and sends those 3 colors/girls to ME in order to watch over the LOONAVERSE. 

After this, she tells the primary colors/girls to help her and fill the world with more color. Over time, Hyunjin begins to miss Heejin. This can be theorized in her solo m/v "Around You" where you see Hyunjin writing various letters, most likely to Heejin, to stay in contact with her. Hyunjin gains the urge to leave the other primary colors and travel to Earth just to be with Heejin but she ultimately chooses not to.

Heejin tells the primary colors/girls to create the color Green (Haseul) (Hyunjin and Jinsoul make Haseul). After creating Haseul, they send her to Earth to spread her color but this leaves Haseul feeling lost, questioning her true purpose in the world. Hyunjin gives Haseul 2 options: Learn your place in the world and live in chaos OR spend the rest of her days in peace, unaware of the truth. Haseul choses the truth, thus living her days in chaos.

Alongside making green, Heejin also tells the girls to make Orange (Yeojin) (Hyunjin and Lip make Yeojin). When Yeojin is made, she is tempted to betray Heejin but stops herself. She then meets Haseul, who she views as a motherly figure but bc Haseul chose to live her days in chaos, Yeojin suffers. Yeojin gets lost in a forest and is tempted by a frog.

After Haseul and Yeojin were made, Hyunjin couldn't hold her temptation back anymore and left Middle Earth to be with Heejin on Earth. This causes an imbalance since the primary colors are not together anymore. During this time, Heejin creates an angel to act as a helper to control the LOONAVERSE. Heejin created ViVi (light pink), symbolizing purity and innocence. Little did Heejin know, that ViVi was tainted with evil, turning her into a cyborg. Because ViVi isn't human, she had a hard time fitting in with the other girls (Fun Fact: ViVi is originally from Eden which we'll get into later!) Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul and ViVi reside on Earth, thus making LOONA 1/3. While on Earth, we later learn about ViVi's crush on a "boy". On Earth, ViVi lives in Hong Kong. (Also, ViVi rescues a mysterious girl from some basement who ends up being Jinsoul. Jinsoul has no clue on how she got on Earth but she returns to Middle Earth to help Kim Lip restore the balance of the LOONAVERSE.)

Odd Eye Circle:  Due to Hyunjin's leave, Kim Lip waits for Jinsoul's return to help her replace Hyunjin and restore the balance. During this time, Kim Lip's power of superspeed becomes active, alongside Jinsoul's power to teleport. With Heejin to guide them, the 2 girls begin their plan to restore the balance. They combined their colors to create the color Purple, thus creating Choerry. As Choerry was being created, she ended up on Earth, where Hyunjin resides. Kim Lip and Jinsoul lure Choerry out of Earth and into Middle Earth. Choerry's power of dimensional travel awakens during this time.

Now that the LOONAVERSE is once again balanced, something shifts. The girls power intensifies as they unintentionally cross paths, as seen in Sweet Crazy Love. This leads them to finding each other, uniting them as ODD EYE CIRCLE (seen in Girl Front). Their powers lead to them getting their Odd Eyes. While Kim Lip and Jinsoul both have their Odd Eyes on their left eye, Choerry has hers on her right eye, showing that she isn't an originally primary color and is instead a mirror copy of Hyunjin (Purple is Yellow's inverted color). 

We later learn that back on Earth, Jinsoul was trapped by someone who was tainted with evil. Noticing that there's something off about Jinsoul, Kim Lip and Choerry attempt to contact Hyunjin for help on Earth. While doing this, they keep seeing a shadowy figure, constantly taunting them from afar.

yyxy: We then learn of Yves existence, who resides in Eden, a dimension that is the exact parallel to Earth. Yves was originally created as an angel to assist Heejin with control of the LOONAVERSE, much like ViVi. Unlike ViVi, Yves gave into temptation and became tainted with evil after eating the forbidden fruit, the apple. This evil caused her color to change. Because she betrayed Heejin, the evil takes over, changing her once light pink color into a Burgundy color. In her "New" m/v, it is seen that Yves lured ViVi onto a date, killing ViVi. Because she was tainted with Yves evil, ViVi was turned into a cyborg.

Due to ViVi's death, her memory is warped, seeing Yves in the form of a boy she crushes on. Though it is not in official M/V's, Yves then taints Choerry with evil after learning that she (Yves) was the one who lured Yeojin into the forest in the form of a frog as a way to defy Heejin. We also learn that Yves was the one taunting ODD EYE CIRCLE while in search for Hyunjin. But 2 things remain unanswered: If Heejin didn't exactly make Yves, who did and who gave Yves the apple?

Later on, Chuu comes into existence, who also lives in Eden and idolizes Yves. But due to Yves' one goal, she is ignored, BUT, if Chuu decides to betray Heejin, Yves will start to care about her. Chuu willingly decides to be tainted by evil just for Yves' attention, thus eating her forbidden fruit, the strawberry. As Yves and Chuu leave Eden and head to Earth (this isn't Yves first time leaving Eden), they encounter Haseul. Because Haseul chose truth over peace, she knows that Yves and Chuu betrayed Heejin. Haseul lets Heejin know about this.

Back in Eden, we learn about Gowon. Gowon lives shut out from the world, only wanting to stay in her own little bubble. But, with the help of Choerry, Yves and Chuu, she decides to give into temptation, eating her forbidden fruit, the pineapple. Even though Gowon never wanted to give in, no matter how hard she ran, Choerry, Yves and Chuu would always catch her. Gowon becomes enlightened to be with the girls, sitting at a table with Yves and Chuu with one empty chair. Who could that chair be for? Possibly for the person who created Eden and the current Eden girls.

Lastly, we learn of Oliva Hye/Hyeju, who came into existence with the LOONAVERSE, as Heejin's shadow. It then comes to our knowledge that Hyeju was actually the one who trapped Jinsoul in the basement in Hong Kong and tainted her with evil. We also learn that she created Yves, Chuu and Gowon, making the unit YYXY. Why did she? Seeing the connection and closeness that the 1/3 girls have with each other, Hyeju became jealous. She made Yves as an angel but because Hyeju was already tainted with evil, Yves automatically was tainted with evil, making Yves the way she is. 

This was never her original plan though. She never wanted Yves to kill ViVi. All she wanted was to have a 1/3 of her own. She was hurt by Yves. Yves betrayed Hyeju, sending her to the deepest depths of the LOONAVERSE. This makes Hyeju angry, filling her with the urge to seek revenge. She wanted justice for ViVi's death and she wanted to stop Yves from tainting anyone else. Knowing about this, Heejin meets Hyeju face to face for the first time, feeling sympathetic with what happened. Hyeju never intended for anything to happen but regardless, she couldn't change the fact that she acted out of jealousy. 

Heejin decided to give Hyeju a test. If she passed, she'd gain Heejin's trust. Heejin sends Yves, Chuu and Gowon back to Eden, sending Hyeju back with them. In Eden, no more damage could be done now, considering that Heejin was constantly watching over the girls. This doesn't stop Yves however, from betraying Heejin. Chuu soon follows Yves and Yves convinces Gowon to come with. This doesn't faze Hyeju. She knows that joining them would just cause them to betray her again. She has to trust Heejin in order to become a key part of LOONA. The other yyxy members leave Eden and explore the LOONAVERSE, with Gowon feeling bad for betraying Hyeju and let alone Heejin. This doesn't stop Hyeju from wanting Heejin's approval. Though she was tempted, Hyeju passed the test, gaining back Heejin's trust and finally becoming a key component of LOONA.

tripleS +(KR)ystal Eyes <AESTHETIC> - Album Review

tripleS, MODHAUS Entertainment’s first kpop group. The label, founded and operated by LOONA’s former creative director and music producer Jaden Jeong, aims to “launch the world’s first kpop artist made and operated by its fans.” A whopping 24 members make up four subunits of tripleS: Acid Angel from Asia, EVOLution, LOVElution, and +(KR)ystal Eyes. As of May 2023, only AAA and +(KR)ystal Eyes have debuted yet, with the latter’s debut mini-album <AESTHETIC> having been released on May 4th. Admittedly, I know very little about tripleS but as an Orbit I’m hoping that Jaden will put some LOONA in them, but I’ll have to see.

I’ll listen to each song 3 times and rate them afterward. Each song will be rated on a scale of 1-10 with 5 being completely neutral, 1 being my least favorite song, and 10 being the best songs ever. Please take my rating with a grain of salt, my goal is to be honest, no hate :)

Cherry 100% - 7

Incredible sound design. The attention to detail in the contrast in frequencies between the chimes, synths, and electric bass is applause-worthy. This reminds me a lot of Odd Eye Circle and [X X], both of which were Jaden’s work. Certainly a great intro track.

Cherry Talk - 8

None of the magical production from Cherry 100% was lost in this song. Absolutely beautiful instrumentation. When the vocals come in, the energy of the song switches to be a little more fun and upbeat, think WOW (LOONA) and verse 1 from Attention (NewJeans). The sounds and textures continue to build into the chorus, but melodically it feels like the song could use a bit more direction. It feels like more of a gem b-side than the title track it’s labeled, but I’m generally known to be a sucker for a great b-side. I haven’t said anything about vocals yet, but they’re all light and smooth. The songwriting isn’t keeping me on my toes necessarily but the production is just so incredible it doesn’t matter.

Touch - 4

A smooth sparkly pop-R&B track, with a bit of a retro feel. It feels like this song is trying to accomplish the sort of sound of Everyday I Love You, LOONA ViVi’s solo title track. What a coincidence that everything sounds like early LOONA… Unfortunately the vocals in Touch aren’t hitting the same mark. You’ll find this is a typical criticism from me, but there is excessive and audible use of autotune throughout much of the song. Despite the vocals being a bit lacking, this song has a fun dreamy sound that I enjoy.

Hide & Seek - 5

More power, less pretty! Well, it’s still pretty, but the drums and bass push this song along in a more upbeat groove. Like Touch, this song also has somewhat noticeable vocal issues, but unlike Touch, they don’t distract from the hype vibe of this song. It’s one of those songs that you just have to bop to, even the first time hearing it. It lacks some direction, giving it a sort of “aimless” feeling though. No strong feelings either way from me here.

Deja-Vu - 7.5

Muted guitars and smooth percussion make for a very unique and smooth backing to this track. It’s just as mellow as the rest, but it’s tight in a way that makes it feel clean and powerful. Very pleasant and satisfying to listen to. The production and songwriting work together here much better than the other songs. There are more vocal problems, but generally they blend into the song just fine. 

Dimension (KRE Ver.) - 7.5

The radio distortion at the beginning helps cement that sort of retro sound to this EP. The percussion on this song is quite varied and unique. This song certainly feels very production forward, but I don’t mind at all. I generally like a more even blend of vocals and music anyways. After listening to the AAA version of this song, I actually think that KRE does it better. The KRE version is more stripped down and subdued, but packs a considerable punch. This song utilizes all of the uniqueness of the production on this album, but doesn’t overuse it. It feels effortless. Love it!

Final Thoughts

This was a really interesting experience for me. I was correct in my prediction that there would be similarities to Jaden-era LOONA. I really loved the complex synth driven production combined with soft aesthetic vocals, just like the title of the mini-album. I still know very little about tripleS, but now I know a little more. I would have to say my overall favorite song on this album is the title track, Cherry Talk. I believe it best demonstrates the strengths of this group. I give this album an overall score of 6.5. Unique, immersive, and dynamic. I’m excited to see what’s next for tripleS! Thank you for reading! Let me know what you think about tripleS and this album!

I wish more groups and companies would be serious about sub units. If they actually put thought and effort jnto them they can be a success and help bolster a group. Someof loonas most popular songs are from odd eye circle. Seulgi and irene offered a fresh and exciting style we havent seen red velvet tackle. Even chocome had people cracking up with super yuppers Acid angels of asia has a solid mini id like kepler and nmixx try it. Not every member fits their concepts id like 2 see their strengths

LOONA SUBUNITS & SOLO RANKING

I don't talk a lot about my girls sooo, since I finally had the time to really listen to all the singles & albums out, I decided to make a little ranking of the whole thing. I have to say that, even if some are ranked 'low', I still listen to every of these songs once in a while with lot of pride filling my heart. I'm glad they are still able to shine despite every that happened.

23 - Sensitive (ENG VER) by Loossemble : like 'Star/Voice', in my ears this song is totally different from the korean one except that this time I really have a hard time with the english translation of this one. This is the only reason I put it so low.

22 - Air Force One by Odd Eye Circle : I was obsessed with the MV but that's it. The song stay in my mind but slip away as fast as it came. Love the different effects they put on their voice during the prechorus tho.

21 - Hitchiker by CHUU : It suits Chuu so much but I'm not a fan of the chorus.

20 - Strawberry Soda by Loossemble

19 - Sensitive by Loossemble : Before the solos of Chuu & HeeJin, it was my fav title track but now I listen to it not as much.

18 - Howl by CHUU : The only reason it is this low is because I saw the teasers for it and I thought it was going to be a song with a 'Halloween' vibe. But now it has grown on me quite a bit.

8 - Real World by Loossemble : I remember the two first things I thought when I heard this song : one 'it goes with their voices so well' and two 'it sounds like a Red Velvet's song and I love it'. I remember some producers working on this album also worked with Red Velvet and Oh My Girl(?), if I'm not mistaken and I can definitely see their styles in this album.

LOONA: loona, also known as girl of the month, is a 12 member girl group from blockberry creative! their debut process was really unique in the kpop world, as it involved giving each member a song as well as three subunits (loona 1/3, odd eye circle, and yyxy) prior to debuting (most groups don't begin solos until the group is well-established). this process lasted one and a half years and as a result loona has a really extensive pre-debut discography. my favorite solos are vivi's (every day i love you), jinsoul's (singing in the rain), and yves's (new). chuu's (heart attack) is the most well-known for the wlw themes! also odd eye circle's girl front goes viral every so often, so you might've heard some of it.

for their debut/post debut (title) tracks, butterfly and paint the town are my personal favorites! to be honest, if there's only one loona music video that you watch, it should be butterfly. like i'm so serious those four minutes and thirty-four seconds changed my life (permanently). hi high, their debut track, and flip that, their most recent korean release, are their more bubbly/bright titles, whereas so what has more of a powerful feel. and you know why not already!

for the b-sides/albums, my personal favorite is the 12:00 album! my fave b-side is pale blue dot tho like that's my song (i got to see hear them perform it in sf btw) but i also recommend stylish, satellite, playback, ding ding ding, wow, oh (yes i am), where you at, colors, and perfect love. for the pre-debut b-sides, i'm a sucker for love letter (jinsoul and kim lip) and girls' talk (yves and chuu), as well as loonatic (oec), rendez-vous 18.9 (yyxy), valentine girl (1/3), and sonatine (1/3).

star broke into american radio stations and allegedly it was in every walmart for a while (and sometimes it still is) but i've never heard it out in public, which feels like homophobia tbh.

their japanese releases are hula hoop and luminous!

RED VELVET: i already sent you the first ten songs that came to mind when i saw u were getting into them, so i won't spend too much time here. they debuted in 2014 with happiness, but in 2015 yeri was added with the release of ice cream cake (there is speculation that red velvet was supposed to debut in 2015 but sm debuted them early for...damage control, and yeri was added later since she would've been too young in 2014). their most recent comeback was feel my rhythm, which samples Bach's "Air on the G-String". it actually works really well.

i do wanna mention irene and seulgi's monster and seulgi's 28 reasons! just cuz the vibes are a little dark, a little edgy, and also pretty gay. joy and wendy also have solo albums (joy debuted with hello, and wendy debuted with like water).

also check out their japanese discography; it's just as good as their korean discography. not enough people talk about cookie jar and wildside. or sappy tbh.

ITZY: known as fourth gen leaders, itzy debuted in 2019 with dalla dalla, and saw instant success. wannabe really cemented their place in fourth gen, and they've been famous ever since! personally, i really love icy and not shy, and their 2021 releases, mafia in the morning and loco, are both solid tracks as well.

for the b-sides, i'd recommend the whole crazy in love album (keep in mind that jyp included instrumentals of all their title tracks for some reason. you can skip those). as for individual songs, racer, kidding me, shoot, don't give a what, cherry, and want it are really fun in my opinion!

they've also got two japanese tracks so far, voltage and blah blah blah. and they just released their first english track, boys like you! personally i think it's fun and cute. it gives me old taylor swift vibes.

TWICE: gonna be honest, i know the least about them. but i love their title tracks, and what little i've heard from their b-sides have been pretty solid so far! so here's a quick rundown of twice's highlights :)

they debuted in 2015 with like ooh-ahh, but it wasn't until they released TT in 2016 that they really solidified their place in the kpop world. other hits include likey, yes or yes (one of my personal favorites), fancy, feel special, what is love, and cry for me! their most recent comeback is talk that talk.

their japanese discography is pretty solid too; i personally enjoy breakthrough and bdz.

BILLLIE: this is your get one free group lmfao. personally i love the billlie girls but really i feel like you'd enjoy gingamingayo! they debuted in november of 2021 so they don't have an extensive discography in the way the other four groups mentioned do, but so far every release of theirs has been really solid. i'd also recommend flipp!ng a coin, ring x ring, a sign ~ anonymous, ring ma bell, and b'rave ~ a song for matilda.

ya like loona? * holding a copy of max & match * their newer stuff dips more into the noisier/girl crush branches of kpop, which isnt quite to my taste. their older releases, predebut, were what truly made them stick out and differ from most kpop. *starts playing uncover off of max & match this song* "uncover" is by the loona subunit "odd eye circle", a space-pop tune that allows all three members to equally shine as their own. odd eye circle's 2017 debut was when loona started gaining worldwide attention. though they aren't my favorite of the subunits, max & match was when they truly came into their own

Here’s my drawing from Kagerou Day 2021, aka the most batshit crossover AU I’ve ever made, aaka Odd Eye Trio ! It’s the Mekatrio from The Kagerou Project but they’re the popular LOONA subunit Odd Eye Circle, with Kido as Jinsoul, Seto as Choerry, and Kano as Kim Lip respectively.

I have built an entire AU with a full plot for this crossover, this drawing was just for fun but I have since gone apeshitt

Tsubomi’s Other World counterpart who helps her to unlock the full extent of her powers and also sends her into multiple crises. Personality-wise Kakusu is more like Heejin than Jinsoul, and Tsubomi is the other way around, but their roles are pretty blended together for plot reasons.

Nusumu | He/Him | Choerry

Kousuke’s Other World counterpart who I keep forgetting the name of because Kousuke isn’t a member of 1/3 like his siblings are, he’s just Choerry, so Nusumu is honest to god not that important after Love Cherry Motion

Azamuku | It/Its | Kim Lip

Shuuya’s Other World counterpart who essentially acts like Kano in MCA, but not as a disguise or anything, it’s just like that. He finds it extremely annoying but it’s very persistent so there’s not much he can do, especially when he’d literally rather die than maybe possibly bother someone for even a second.

hii i'm the anon who asked about wjsn, loona etc. and here are my recs!!

wjsn has a space, cosmic, sci fi type concept (their name is literally cosmic girls) and the songs that show that best would be Dreams Come True, You Got and Secret. i also strongly suggest Luckitty Cat (the production is INSANEEE and exy is a crazy good rapper) if you enjoy campy crayon pop orange caramel type music, check out HMPH by their subunit Chocome!

now for Loona.. well, for context, loona has 12 members and 3 subunits (1/3 - 4 members, 1 member with no subunit, odd eye circle - 3 members, yyxy- 4 members). each member also has their own solo

the best solos are, in my opinion: around you, egoist, heart attack, eclipse, new

heart attack has a cute mv with a sapphic love story!! and new's mv also has sapphic themes. yeojin's solo, kiss later, is a cute & catchy song that surprinsingly has lyrics about consent and boundaries

1/3 has ballad music that reminds me of a romance anime opening. my recs would be love & live and sonatine.

odd eye circle has an unmatched discography, it has yet to be bested in ALL of kpop. they have this dreampop, d&b, nostalgic sound to them, every song is a masterpiece. i suggest love letter, girl front, loonatic, uncover, sweet crazy love, and puzzle

yyxy is the last subunit, and i would suggest their title track love4eva and their bside frozen, rosy, d-1

Choerry feeling really down lately, especially after reading a ton of hate comments she got after a concert, and feeling like she’s not as good as the others but she knows her reputation as Loona’s own personal sun and so, she keeps it inside and continues smiling like nothing is wrong. She prides herself on always cheering the other members up and doesn’t want to be the one bringing them down. (1/2)

yerim adores knowing that she’s the one in the group who’s always making everyone smile, it makes her feel so much pride when she manages to cheer the girls up even when they’re really down. they all know that the second they go to her, she’ll have them smiling in an instant.

so that’s exactly why she doesn’t want to open up with them when she feels down herself.

she always tries to brush off any negative comments, but it feels like they’re only becoming more and more prominent lately. sooyoung tried to tell them all, the more popular they get the more they’ll get both praise and criticism, it’s only natural.

but it eats at yerim, any negative comment she sees really sticks with her, eyes watery as she reads through them. is she really not good enough to be in loona? she always felt like she deserved her spot here, she worked hard for it, and the other girls always tell her how talented she is and what she adds to the group.

yerim thinks they might just lie to spare her feelings though, especially her subunit group mates. jungeun and jinsoul feel a bit responsible for her, always big sisterly to her, and so maybe they’ve been lying to spare her from being hurt.

she tries to bottle all the negative feelings up, plastering on her bright smile as usual, trying to keep her reputation up as the sunshine of the group. how can she crumble when everyone relies on her to be the cheerful one?

jinsoul and jungeun both notice yerim is more subdued than usual lately, her smiles false, her eyes showing her true tiredness and loneliness. they don’t want to make her uncomfortable by bringing it up around everyone, they know she’s just get defensive and deny it.

so they find a day she’s alone in the odd eye circle room, making sure the door is shut securely behind them before they join her on her bed.

“you’ve seemed a bit down lately,” jinsoul starts softly. “you wanna talk about it?”

“i’m fine,” yerim tries to assure them in a bright tone, looking almost nervous. “why wouldn’t i be?”

“you can be honest, yerimmie. it’s just us,” jungeun reaches for her hand, feeling how yerim squeezes it hard, like she’s anchoring herself.

yerim takes a deep breath, contemplating, and then, “i’ve just not been as happy lately, i guess.”

“that’s okay, yerim-ah,” jinsoul frowns a little. “you don’t have to be happy all the time, that’s not...nobody is.”

“but everyone wants me to be,” yerim whispers. “like...everyone expects me to be the cheerful one all the time, and to cheer everyone up.”

“well that’s not a fair expectation to be placed on you,” jungeun says insistently. “i’m sorry we even indirectly did that to you, it’s not fair.”

yerim wipes a tear away before it can fully slip down her cheek. “people are so mean sometimes.”

jungeun and jinsoul exchange a look, not having to ask to know she means hate comments online. they hate that yerim has ever let herself look at that kind of stuff, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

“well they’re never right,” jinsoul tells her. “they’re just people who are miserable with they’re own life taking it out on you because you’re happy, talented, and successful.”

“what if i’m not...meant to be in the group,” yerim whispers, sounding like she’s afraid of the answer.

“well you’re in it, so clearly you’re meant to be here,” jungeun laughs a little, and miraculously yerim smiles too. “you’re talented, yerim. you’re a dedicated worker, you’re special. there’s nobody else like you on the world.”

“loona wouldn’t be loona without you,” jinsoul goes on. “everything would feel so empty if you weren’t here. and think about how many people love you, how many people love your solo and how many orbits probably turn to videos of you to make them happy.”

“i never thought about it like that,” yerim sighs. “thank you, unnies.” she smiles a little brighter then, looking more like her normal self. “i love you guys.”

“we love you too yerimmie,” jungeun smiles, and they both lean to hug yerim tight, make her feel all their love through it.
