So when it comes to IndyCar we have a ‘big three’ when it comes to journalists
Marshall Pruett from RACER magazine
Nathan Brown from the IndyStar
Jenna Fryer from Associate Press
And, in all honesty, this whole Penske P2P situation shows everyone’s strengths.
Pruett is one of those motorsport journalists that were previously a mechanic so not only has that technical knowledge to give a different insight and expand on the information we have so far but has sources amongst the engineering and technical sides that’s others often don’t have.
Brown will ask questions, having gone to Tim Cindric several times since this all came to light and do his own investigations.
And Fryer, throws shade and stirs shit on twitter hoping it will somehow convince someone to give a tell all on her fainting couch.
Like, I wish I was joking. The woman has been attacking Josef since this began of all this happening.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Fun fact: Josef was always scheduled for Friday media, even before it was announced that he would be doing a mini conference in the morning.
And it’s not the first time she’s pulled shit like this.
She spent the “Daytona 23 hours and 58 minutes” acting like a gossip channel about what had happened to Devlin’s puppy as if to justify why she was at the track cause she talked more about blocking people than she did the race itself.
Then we have her basically bashing David Malukas for being upset that he didn’t win the Indy 500 rookie of the year over Jimmie Johnson, falsely claiming that he had abandoned another AP Journalist when he hadn’t and giving a half hearted back pedal before calling him and Dale Coyne Racing unsporting.
There’s also when she reported on Fernando Alonso’s announcement to be doing the 500, which was full of misinformation (highlights being that IndyCar and F1 totally use the same Honda engine and Fernando wasn’t going to have to do the rookie runs). When people including Mario and Michael fucking Andretti were calling her out on her bullshit, what did she do?
Compared herself to a journalist who had been murdered in Russia for speaking out against Putin and then used Billy Monger’s fund raiser as further deflection.
She acts like this, knowing that because she works for AP, people will still come to her with stories.
We’ve literally had Zak and Chip fight over her fainting couch throughout the Palou Contract saga.
And it’s fucking infuriating.

The Bad Batch and world war II
I've talked about this before on twitter but I don't think I made a post here, so let's go.
Let’s talk about this motherfucker here:
Tumblr media
For those of you that didn't make the connection or aren't aware of it, Dr. Hemlock (voiced by the amazing Jimmi Simpson) is a direct reference to Josef Mengele, the infamous nazi doctor.
Mengele ran several horrifying experiments on the jews that were trapped in Auschwitz, which at the time was a secret military base of unknown location, rather like Tantiss in the cartoon.
Mengele was particularly fascinated by genetics, and specially twins. He is said to have performed experiments in over 3000 of them between 1943-1945, many of which would unfortunately come to pass as a result.
It is matched perfectly by his animated counterpart, who is fascinated by clones and genetics and who runs endless experiments on them in a secret base where they can be done without risking exposure (or intervention) from the rest of the galaxy.
Mengele survived the fall of Germany by fleeing to south america, where he had a stroke and drowned many years later, in 1979. This isn't the first time Star Wars has touched real life. We know the original trilogy is based off the US Vietnam War, but I feel it is important to understand what is being referenced, even if only so the world can learn not to repeat past mistakes.
I don't know what Star Wars will do with Hemlock, but I do wish all of the twins that went through Mengele's experiments a peaceful afterlife.

Indycar at Thermal
So, Thermal happened. For those who don't know, the NTT Indycar Series had a non-points exhibition, vaguely all-stary race at the Thermal Club, a private racing club in southern California. This was billed as the "$1 Million Challenge" for ironic reasons that I'll get to in a moment. Anyway, for the event, the field was split in half with two ten-minute heat races, the top six cars transferring from each heat into a final. In the twenty lap, twelve car final, the drivers would race for $500,000, because they couldn't even get that part right.
The first heat race was pretty good, with drama off the start leading to Romain Grosjean getting spun out and collecting Rinus Veekay, while Indycar legend Scott Dixon was penalized out of contention for starting it. Felix Rosenqvist led, but Scott McLaughlin was hunting him down at the end.
The second heat was a bit more mixed. The Chip Ganassi Racing cars of Alex Palou and Marcus Armstrong controlled the pace, but the McLarens put on a show fighting for the final transfer spot. Callum Ilott filling in in the #6 started just outside the transfer spot, but then got swallowed up by his teammates, Alexander Rossi and Pato O'Ward. Rossi and O'Ward proceeded to put on a show fighting for the sixth and final transfer slot, with Alex winning out in the end. CGR's pace was ominous, but McLaren kept it entertaining.
Then the race hit rock bottom with the first half of the feature race. The $1 Million race was twenty laps, but it was divided into two ten lap halves, with a ten-minute break in the middle, and drivers weren't allowed to change tyres in the middle. Knowing that, the teams figured that they would just save their tyres in the first half knowing the field would bunch up for the second half, meaning they'd have more tyre to attack with in the second half. So, on a long, twisty road course without many passing opportunities, we had to watch the drivers one by one decide that they couldn't push any further so they should just save for the second half. Colton Herta was the first to do it, then Agustin Canapino, then Alexander Rossi...soon enough, everyone all the way up to Graham Rahal in seventh was driving seconds off the pace saving their tyres.
Then we get to the ten-minute break with the NBC commentators practically pleading with the viewers that the race was going to get better in the second half. Alex Palou finished lap ten, and then the race just kept going because Pietro Fittipaldi was evidently underfueled and it took him about three minutes to cross the finish line. Then, in a strange, quiet mid-race break where nothing else seemed to be happening, Graham Rahal retired with a technical issue and Pietro Fittipaldi was disqualified for not having enough fuel. The fun, all-for-money, twelve car all-star race was down to just ten cars.
Nevertheless...the second half was better. Alexander Rossi pushed his way up the field, clashed with Josef Newgarden, and both went wide while Colton Herta went underneath them both for the position. Cars were actually racing now! Herta charging up the field and Rossi hanging on a few cars behind made it look like this saving strategy might actually amount to something after all...only for Alex Palou to dominate the race anyway. This was better, but for most of the fans, the damage was already done.
Indycar twitter was dominated by people talking about this race being a terrible mistake, rock bottom of Roger Penske's series ownership, and a horrid waste of time. Me? My reaction was mostly to just disassociate and laugh at the trainwreck. I love Indycar, I want Indycar to do well, I love Indycar so much I'm writing a novel-length fic about it on AO3, so it sucks to see a dud of an event like this. The worst part in my opinion is that we're stuck with this being the most recent race for a month, because the Long Beach Grand Prix isn't until April 21st.
It's been a rough offseason as an Indycar fan, and seeing an uncharacteristically dull St. Pete race where Josef Newgarden dominated following by this confused little Thermal Club event where reigning champ Palou came out on top...it's not great. I just hope Long Beach brings a return to normalcy, with good, hard, unpredictable American open wheel racing...in a month.

Tumblr media
Penske Perfect and Details Matter are two phrases often used in conjunction with the Penske organization. And when they can be used to dunk on Ferrucci, all the better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josef is a perfectionist. This is a combo of his highly competitive nature - which has been said about him from a young age - and the Penske Perfect motto which he has taken to heart. He is highly critical of himself - getting very down on himself if he makes a mistake and taking the blame for things not wholly under his control. But he tried to maintain a genial if slightly arrogant image in public. He slips sometimes - there have been a few angry Twitter interactions that he later apologized for and on occasion after a race, his temper will get the better of him and he'll say things he probably shouldn't.
He can be goofy as hell as seen on Bus Bros. Scott McLaughlin has brought this out of him since becoming teammates. Josef has said that Scott makes him feel more comfortable being his real self.
I would be remiss if I did not point out Josef's thighs. He is a specimen in general but those thighs should get special attention.
Tumblr media
Fanfic Lore
Frequently paired with teammate Scott McLaughlin. As of 2024 there has been a cooling of their friendship as Josef pulls back to focus on racing/the championship.
Historically paired with Conor Daly. They raced together in karts and lower-series cars.

INDYCAR Social Media Gains: An Intro + Season Gains so far
I normally post these on Twitter but I thought maybe people would like to see them here/discuss them. I'd like to go through two things briefly before we get to the gains:
IndyCar gains are vastly different from F1 gains. IndyCar gets a tiny fraction of global viewers that F1 does so to look at IndyCar gains, you have to forget F1 numbers. They aren't a fair comparison and I won't compare them
Unlike F1, I track both IG and Twitter for IndyCar drivers. IndyCar drivers personally use Twitter more so I think the data is more interesting and frankly, I am one person so when I had to cut something from tracking, it was F1 Twitter.
If you saw my thread on Twitter today, those numbers are a different set so keep that in my

Croatian MPs unanimously voted on Wednesday to adopt a declaration recognising the Holodomor of 1932-33 as a crime of genocide committed by the Soviet authorities against the Ukrainian people.
The declaration said that the Holodomor – which means ‘killing by starvation’ – was an enforced famine organised by Josef Stalin’s regime to subjugate the then Soviet republic of Ukraine.
The vote was welcomed by the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“I am grateful to the Republic of Croatia for this historic vote. The world will never put up with the crimes of the Kremlin – neither past nor present,” Zelensky wrote on Twitter.
The initiative to adopt the declaration was launched on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, in which some four million Ukrainians died.
During a debate in the parliament on June 19, all parliamentary groups announced that they would vote for it, but some opposition MPs complained that the topic was only being discussed in 2023, a year and a half after the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Social Democrats MP Davorko Vidovic argued that the Holodomor should have been condemned much earlier, given that it has long been known that it was one of the biggest crimes of the 20th century.
“I regret that we haven’t condemned the crimes of the totalitarian regime on principle, as we wouldn’t have made the declaration if there had been no Russian aggression; we should have made it 15 years ago,” said Vidovic.
The vote on the declaration was watched from the parliamentary gallery by Ukraine’s ambassador to Zagreb, Vasyl Kyrylych.
“The global recognition of the Holodomor genocide continues to grow swiftly,” Kyrylych wrote on Twitter afterwards.
The German parliament recognised the Holodomor as a genocide in December last year.

Interview with Simon Read
Memorial Day honors and mourns those military personnel who died while serving their country.  After watching the movie “The Great Escape” people might want to honor those in the allied armed forces who were captured by the Germans and brutally killed. Immortalized in the film is the mass breakout of seventy-six Allied airmen from the infamous Stalag Luft III.  Not long after the escape, fifty of the recaptured airmen were taken to killing fields throughout Germany and shot on the direct orders of Hitler.
People might wonder what happened to these Nazi killers. In the book Human Game, Simon Read delivers a clear-eyed and meticulously researched account of this often-overlooked saga of hard-won justice. This “after story,” starting where the movie left off, explains in detail how the German Gestapo killers were brought to justice.
When the nature of these killings came to light, Churchill’s government swore to pursue justice at any cost. Francis P. McKenna led a three-year manhunt that brought twenty-one Gestapo killers to justice.
Elise Cooper: Which came first the movie, “The Great Escape,” or your idea to write the book?
Simon Read: The movie came first.  I am from the UK originally. There, it is a tradition that they show “The Great Escape” movie every Christmas Day. My grandfather flew with the Royal Air Force during the Second War. From a very early age I used to sit with him and watch.  It is still one of my favorite movies of all time.  I was always traumatized by the ending where the escapees were gathered in a field and machine gunned down. I wondered what happened to the Nazi who gunned all the escapees down. This was the genesis for the idea of the book. It is also a great adventure story.
EC:  How does this fit into Memorial Day?
SR: Memorial Day is a time to reflect and ponder the sacrifices made by those in uniform.  The Great Escape was an exercise in allied ingenuity, bravery, and rebellion.  It was a massive propaganda victory. I think they are very much heroes for what they did. Not every victory is on the battlefield.  This is an example of cunning and bravery.
EC:  Can you explain the quote by Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels in May 1944?
SR:  You are referring to when he said, “We owe it to our people, which is defending itself with so much honesty and courage, that it is not allowed to become human game to be hunted down by the enemy.”  This is where the title for the book came from. This in response to the allied bombing campaign.  He thought it was perfectly legitimate to attack downed allied airmen and to take revenge. There is something cold and barbaric about this quote.
EC: This reminds me of the unfair criticism of Israel where Hamas can replace the Nazis and Israel replaces the allies.
SR: People can look at the British bombing campaign during WWII where they used targeted bombing of cities. People need to look at the context of the times.  It might not be very appealing, but Britian was fighting for its very survival against its merciless enemy. They did what they needed to do to survive. In warfare both sides are dealing in morally grey areas, which is just how war is. My grandfather flew in RAF bomber command, 48 operations over Germany.  It used to fire him up when he would hear people criticizing the British bombing campaigns against German cities. His attitude, ‘these people do not know what they are talking about,’ considering London was being bombed and devastated.  The context cannot be ignored.
EC: There are pictures in the beginning of the book and an appendix in the back of the book.  Why?
SR: These men could not just be numbers, because otherwise it does not hit home. This is why I put in the pictures. It is one thing reading a name on a page, but putting a face to the name really drives it home.  Auschwitz has a twitter feed of those who perished in the gas chambers.  It is more than a name and a number.  People can see the emotions of the faces, the terror and fear. It really underscores the tragedy. The appendix tells when and how the fifty died.
EC: How realistic was the movie?
SR: Regarding Stalag Luft III it is true as depicted in the movie that the Germans tried to make it escape proof by trying to make tunneling impossible, had trap doors, set the barracks on concrete stilts, and had subterranean microphones buried deep underground. The top layer of soil was a different color than the soil underneath making it hard to hide the dug-up soil.  Yet, the escapees found a way. The fake documents are also true.  Where the movie deviates there were American characters, but the American and British POWS were actually separated. Also, true, the Germans took all the “problem airmen,” the ones who escaped from multiple camps and stuck them in one camp together. This all backfired on the Germans in spectacular fashion.
EC:  Hitler ordered all the escapees to be found and executed?
SR:  It was a huge embarrassment for the Germans.  Hitler flew into an absolute rage when he found out. It was a very brutal response and violated every rule of warfare.  The German Luftwaffe who ran the camp treated the inmates well because they were not Gestapo. There is a scene in the movie “The Great Escape” where the camp commandant told the British high-ranking official in the camp that fifty escapees were shot. This really reflects what happened in real-life, that they were upset.
EC:  What about the execution?
SR:  They were shot in the back, they were cremated, and their names were not supposed to be recorded.  There was a list. The movie did not reflect what really happened because it had the escapees machine gunned down.  In actuality, the escapees were murdered in groups of two and three by Gestapo assassination teams.  They were put in a car, driven out to isolated spots, and told to stretch their legs.  This is when the Gestapo would come up behind them and shoot them in the back of the head. Their bodies were taken to a local crematorium and destroyed.  Stalag Luft III did get a list of those who were executed, and it was passed on to the British POWs.
EC:  How would you describe Frank McKenna, the RAF officer in charge of investigating the fifty murders?
SR: He had detective skills and sought justice with a strong moral code.  He was very determined and driven. He was outraged and disgusted by what had happened. Over the course of a few years, he did get results.
EC:  Who would you say are the worst Gestapo murderers for this incident?
SR:  Erich Zacharias wore a watch of a British airmen.  He also raped and then shot a woman witness. He is a horrible human being who was a true believer in the Nazi cause and Hitler. Then there was Johannes Post, the chief executioner who took real pleasure in killing some of the escapees.  He was a sadist. They were just vicious with no redeeming qualities. It is unfathomable how someone resorts to such barbaric acts.
EC:  What do you want readers to get out of the book?
SR: There were those low-level guys, like Emil Schultz who justified killing in cold blood because they claimed their families was threatened. I pondered and wanted the readers to question, what would they have done in that situation. Schultz confessed to shooting Roger Bushell, the main architect. He had true regret.  The RAF investigators did have sympathy but because he did a terrible thing was sent to the gallows. I did not approve or excuse of what Schultz did.
EC: Next book?
SR: It is titled Scotland Yard coming out in September.  It is a history of the Yard told through many of its most famous cases and cases that helped advance criminal investigation like how finger printing developed, criminal profiling, and why police officers wear rubber gloves at crime scenes. It covers the Yard from its creation in 1829 to the Eve of WWII in 1939. I tried to write it as a thriller. There is a great mix of true crime and history.
THANK YOU!!

Ornament and Abstraction
The Dialogue Between Non-Western, Modern and Contemporary Art
 Markus Brüderlin
Dumont, Cologne 2001, 256 pages, paperback, ISBN 3-905632-15-2
euro 90,00

Published on the occasion of the exhibition held June 10-Oct. 7, 2001 in the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen, Basel
This book is an in-depth study of this major theme in 20th century art history. It begins with the innovative pictorial conception of Philipp Otto Runge, whose early 19th century paintings featured the last genuine form in the history of ornament, the arabesque. The arabesque had an influence via Symbolism (Maurice Denis, Paul Gauguin) and Art Nouveau (Henry van de Velde, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann) on painting's move towards abstraction (Vasily Kandinsky, Frantisek Kupka, Adolf Hoelzel), which resulted on the one hand in a non-figurative, geometric structure of lines (Mondrian), and on the other, in the swirls of Matisse and Jackson Pollock. Side by side with the "royal way" of Cubism, arabesque abstraction therefore opens up a second doorway to the world of non-figurative art. Significant influences also result from the modern artists' preoccupation with the ornamentation found in distant cultures, such as Matisse with the Orient and Oceania, Ad Reinhardt with Asian culture, and American painting with pre-Columbian ornament (Josef Albers, Barnett Newman). Referring also to Minimalism, new media, digital technology, the Renaissance and the Rococo, the book celebrates the impact of ornament on abstract art, as well as showcasing a remarkable array of masterpieces.

Note
do you think we'll see any big gains for indycar drivers after this gp? their tweets/ig posts have been a must watch after all the drama on and off track
So I want to preface this by reminding everybody that big IndyCar gains are way different from big F1 gains. (And I also have largely stopped pulling Twitter numbers because they aren't reliable so I only have IG data)
But currently, I'm seeing 9 drivers who have gained more over this weekend than they had in either of the first two race weekends (and I count followers as part of the race weekend until 24 hours after the checkered flag)
It's encouraging to see race winner Kyle Kirkwood with just over 900 new followers -- before this race weekend, he had gained 402 new followers all season so he's more than doubled his gains just this weekend.
Alexander Rossi has gained ~300 new followers so far (before this weekend started he had gained ~680 for the entire season so anything over 300 is a pretty significant get for the weekend). Josef Newgarden has gained just under 300 new followers so far (and before this weekend started, he had gained 490 so again, pretty significant).
Those are just a few examples but overall, it's looking like a very strong weekend for IndyCar on social media!!
