to be clear I love the champion point system bc it's a fun spin on the MMO-standard of raising the overall level cap and it's nice to have something with actual effects on my character to progress on (the much, much faster leveling at veteran rank doesn't make it a slog either, and it's obviously something you're meant to gain passively doing what you were normally doing) even after the 'soft' level cap and gear stat cap and doesn't make me feel like I'm wasting exp doing things like questing, world bosses, delves, etc bc technically I'm still leveling.

but tbh the main reason I like it is bc they had the genuinely good idea to make cp points a) account-wide and b) usable by every character on the account even if they're not high enough level to actually level cps themselves, and I like that you're tacitly rewarded not just for doing things on your main but for having alts and having them at max level bc every cp level makes every single one of your characters stronger even at level 1.

Cyberlife the Game: VR Verse

The Lead-up

The release of the new VR game, “Cyberlife”, was highly anticipated. It was the first game which could lay claim to a real, completely immersive experience - several top gaming athletes pledged to be there for the release on November 5th, 2038, being some of the lucky few who received personal copies of the game for its beta testing, a week before the commercial launch of the game. With all 10,000 initial players selected, the Cyberlife company delivered immersive virtual reality sets to each lucky raffle winner, in what many people called the most ambitious publicity stunt for a new gaming company ever seen within the US. Elijah Kamski called it a ‘commitment to accessibility’. 

The Reckoning

November 5th, 4:00pm. The day of the release, Cyberlife’s network finally comes online - everybody’s copies of the game now can connect to the golden gates that shimmer in the empty space of the Virtual World hosted by Cyberlife Co, waiting to be populated with various other immersive reality games once developers could work out how to make their work compatible with Cyberlife VR gear. Mr Kamski promised a formal announcement at 5:00pm, so people stick around until then, some trickling in closer to the time and others eager to find as much as they can in the time that they have. Some of the elite gamers have logged in using their gaming handles. Others have used pseudonyms, so they can enjoy the game as they please for the beta test period, without the excitement of the crowds.  5:00pm arrives. They’re all gathered in the central square of Alther. Ten thousand people, in a crowd, watch as the sky splits into a shining white screen, and Kamski steps into view.

Game Mechanics 

Take and leave these as you please, they’re suggestions! Adjust as necessary for plot/etc. 

If you die in the game you die in real life. No exceptions. If you lose internet connection in real life, you have a 72 hour grace period where you may be comatose. Any longer than that, automatic game over. 

Those empty houses are meant to be for purchase or rent. Having a house has a lot of benefits - including the fact you won’t freeze to death, and access to a synthesis room, which you can use to make higher-level medpacks, weapons, armour, etc out of foraged or won items. You’d have to purchase these, otherwise.   

There are five Levels. You may travel between levels freely once you have gained access to them - to gain access, you will need to defeat each Level’s local boss. Exploration and preparation is vital, as well as information sharing: a Level might have some clues scattered around with NPCs, but you very well could accidentally walk into a boss fight while exploring. Be prepared, be cautious, but if you don’t explore you’ll never find the boss. 

Parties of up to ten players. 

Guilds of up to 1,000 players. Guilds can have their own chat rooms. They have names to refer to themselves. The most well-known and biggest guild is Jericho. If someone dies in your guild it is announced to the entire guild. Very Hunger Games cannon-esque. It’s got its own chime. Ringadingding, xyz is dead. 

Probably one of the guilds is a self-declared policing body. Let’s hope they’re good at it. 

You still gotta eat. If your hunger stat is too low, NPCs at bars will offer to let you work for a meal; nobody will starve, unless they refuse to work. 

Weaponries and armorists do exist. Cost is in-game currency (earned through drops or trades with other players). They sell daggers/knucklebusters for low-level melee, guns (sniper rifles! Pistols, shotguns - different stats), ammo, low-level medpacks (anything higher you will need to synthesise yourself), one grenade at a time (these are usually consumable pick-up from decently-leveled monsters), and the more common synthesis materials if you just need a quick top-up of the last 5 leathers, etc. Armorists sell different levels of armor - bullet proof vests, chain mail, damage-returning xyzs... all at the cost of stealth and mobility. Some people choose not to wear any armor at all. Others, panicked, wear everything they can get their hands on. 

Killing is not the only option. Besides bosses, you can stun creatures and make them drop whatever they’re carrying, and they will still scurry off. You gotta kill the bosses. Sneaking past would-be combats because your stealth is high enough? Strategic AND useful. 

You can kill NPCs. Everybody suffers the loss of that NPC for a week. ‘WEAPONRY CLOSED DUE TO MURDER’ until a ‘new’ NPC comes to replace them. People get upset. And annoyed. You don’t kill the NPCs. 

Classes: there are no formal classes. People aren’t divided into types of people irl and they aren’t in the game, either. You can cross and mix and create your own playstyle - yes people will tend to have things they lean towards and roles within their parties, but hey. You don’t get any stat boost for pre-determining what you want to play as. 

You can share information or choose not to. If you have mapped something it’s usually better to share this information with everyone - there is a communal open-source live map for access, but not everyone contributes everything they know, because people are like that. 

There is friendly fire, be careful out there 

Certain (expensive) tech artefacts with particular powers. You can make these up as needed for plot devices, but some useful things to think about:

Teleportation watch - allows you to insta-teleport yourself and your party with you to your house. Should a boss ever escape/rampage into the main city of a Level you’re on (or you just come face to face with one by mistake), this will be extremely advantageous.

Healing nanobots - restores a small amount of health at a time, but continuously. Good for cases of chronic damage. If you lose 3HP a minute to a chronic issue but gain 10HP every 3 minutes, you should still be able to sleep soundly. 

Contact Cards. There are three Contact Cards in the entire game. They are awarded to players of significance - e.g. the first to locate the First Level’s boss, the first to uncover important game lore, the first to reach the Third Level, etc. Contact Cards are non-transferable (though you can use them on someone else’s behalf) items which allow the user a fifteen-minute phonecall home (to the real world). Fifteen minutes only. This includes ringtime. No more no less, but you can call any phone number in the world, for any reason, and you can use 5 minutes on one phonecall and 10 on another, if you like. If your character would never earn a CC - consider whether they might be able to win a raffle for one. I’m sure they’d be good to raffle off the use of, at a profit. 

First party to beat a boss gets good items. Everyone thereafter gets recipes to synthesise those items. You will need a copy of the recipe and all items on it to synthesize - if you want to make two, you will need two copies. 

You can PVP and stake items on the outcome. Be careful to define what a ‘defeat’ is, but this is a good way for people to identify those elite players/prove themselves to each other AS elite players/just to be able to get some sparring practice in, and gambling. 

Once the game is over/someone has beaten the final boss, everyone is put back to their normal lives. I don’t believe in muscle wastage because being true to life at expense of plot convenience doesn’t appeal to me, but hey, each their own. Physical activity helps strengthen your bones and heart and encourages better sleep. It also has a positive impact on your mental health.

Sports also help children develop emotionally. Learning to navigate teamwork, loss, and other challenges exposes them to challenges in a safe and supportive environment.

In addition, the AAP points out that “teenagers participating in organized sports report fewer mental health problems and have lower odds of emotional distress compared with peers.”

If the answer is no, you may want to reassess the situation. Forcing a child to participate in a sport could lead to challenges between you and your child. It may cause undue frustration, and your little one may become resentful because they aren’t happy or “having fun.”

If your child wants to play sports, you should encourage them to do so in a safe and healthy way. This can be done by keeping the following things in mind.

Keep things simple

When introducing young children to sports, it’s best to keep things simple. Elementary school aged children can and should learn the essentials — and only the essentials.

Diablo III + Reaper of Souls

I originally started Diablo III as a Witch Doctor when I first got it, but I put the game away for a while and eventually came back during Season 15 and rolled a Monk for it.  It took just over 25 hours to get to the end of Act V, playing mostly on Hard with some Expert thrown in.  This review covers the base game plus Reaper of Souls, but not Rise of the Necromancer.  I played entirely on my own and since I had a seasonal character, none of the items or gold my Witch Doctor found could be used. 

Diablo III is a bit of a different beast from the previous games in the series, mostly from Diablo II.  It's more of an arcade-y experience I think.  You no longer can allocate stat points (until level 70) and you no longer have three skill trees to balance your skill points between.  Instead, the game automatically adds points to your stats and you unlock a new skill or a Rune that modifies it for every level up to 69 or 70 depending on the character class.  I imagine some people cried foul at having player choice taken away in how their character develops, but you still have control over what skills are in use.  You just don't dump points into skills to boost the synergy it has with the others you'll use.

You also unlock passive skills and slots to put them in.  

Minor break in the long review, but the best times I had with D2 were with modded games and using PlugY to not only give me a ton of inventory space as well as over four million pages of shared stash, but I could reset my stat points and skill points at any time.  Most of my playtime was during Normal difficulty and I had a bunch of builds, though not all of them were viable for anything beyond that.  I know Blizzard eventually added a once-per-difficulty respec option, but I'm still not keen on the possibility of ruining a character by investing in the wrong skills/stats.  You couldn't really freely experiment with builds unless you were willing to invest a bunch of time into leveling them and come to find out, Sanctuary really isn't a great Aura even when it's been leveled.  And for what it's worth, the only time I beat Act V Hell was in Eastern Sun, using an Arctic Blast/Winter Fury Druid. 

This still ended up being the most kills I got in one chain. 

Diablo III lets you change around assigned skills and their Runes at any time you're out of combat, no need to use a consumable or anything.  I really liked this aspect since it let me go hog wild with trying out different skills, combinations of them, different Runes, etc.  I didn't need to look up guides to see if a skill that looked good on paper was still worth using or not because there was no risk in actually trying them out.  You're given six slots (left mouse button, right mouse button, 1234 or QWER) to assign skills, and the game initially restricts you on which skills go in which slot, but you can change that with Elective Mode.  This also allows you to use more than one skill of a given category in your loadout provided it's not an "only one" situation like the Monk's Mantras category. 

Each skill has five Runes assigned to it, though you're only able to use one Rune per skill.  Sometimes they merely buff the damage a skill does, sometimes they change other parameters like making the skill hit in a wider area or they change how the skill works entirely.  For example, the Monk's Wave of Light summons a ghostly bell right in front of the Monk that deals pretty heavy damage to anything it hits.  The Wall of Light Rune changes the damage type and makes it stun enemies it hits, while Shattering Light also changes the element type but also has the bell generate a wide beam of cold that travels and smashes into anything in its way.  Its Explosive Light Rune creates eight flaming avatars of the Monk that then rush in their own direction while still dealing heavy damage, but without summoning the bell.  Some Legendary items and some Set items can also change aspects of skills, like the Tzo Krin's Gaze spirit stone causing Wave of Light to drop the bell directly on the enemy instead of placing it next to the Monk. 

Skills now run on weapon damage, though that's still derived from your stats as well as the actual stats on your gear.  I found this kinda jarring but instead of needing a caster weapon for a caster class, you can use pretty much anything.  So my Witch Doctor who could throw exploding fireballs somehow was doing more damage with it using a giant two-handed sword.  Okay.  Skills also use the weapon's attack speed, so you have to decide what balance of speed and power to run with. 

Wonderful names for Rare items make a comeback, of course!  

Once you hit level 70, you start gaining Paragon Levels.  These actually give you points you can allocate across four categories with four attributes each (though you earn points for each category in a set order), and these too can be reset at any time for free.  You can boost your primary stat, your movement speed, give points to resisting all elements, and even buff your gold find!  Most of these stats can only be raised 50 times each but there apparently is no limit to Paragon Levels, though leveling naturally slows down after some time since you still have higher and higher EXP requirements for each Paragon Level. 

Though the character sheet still has a tucked-away readout of all of your stats, all of those have been condensed to three categories that give you a general idea of your power--Damage dealing with damage per second, Toughness representing how much damage you can absorb before dying, and Recovery detailing how many points of Toughness a second you recover.  Items still have the full stat readout too, but you can use these three categories to get an at-a-glance look at which gear would be better to use.  Just remember that the game only cares about numbers when it comes to the comparison between the three categories--if you rely on Life Per Hit with fast weapons to stay alive, the game won't know that a Life Per Kill item isn't actually better for you even if the numbers are higher. 

I found that items didn't drop very often for me on Hard, and I actually liked that, as ass-backwards as that sounds for a game in a genre all about killing things and getting loot from them.  I still picked up everything, even white plain items since they could be broken down at the blacksmith.  The inventory has been expanded to 10x6 and items take either one or two slots, so no need to figure out how to fit a 4x2 giant axe into your backpack.  For me, this led to not needing to return to town nearly as often because of a full pack and I oftentimes came back willingly before I capped out because I found a waypoint or because the questline required me to come back.  There are also three crafters in town who can create items for you, and you very quickly unlock the ability to make rare-quality items and the blacksmith can even make Legendary or Set items with the post-game recipes you can find. 

Though the full CGI cutscenes are rare, the "moving drawing" ones are still pretty neat-looking.  

With Reaper of Souls, beating Act V opens up Adventure Mode for all of the characters on your account regardless of their progress in the story.  Here, you're given full access to all five Acts and their waypoints, and each Act is given five Bounties.  These involve going to X area and killing Y many monsters, or Z specific boss, or surviving for so many seconds during an event.  Completing a Bounty rewards gold and experience, while clearing all five of an Act's Bounties rewards a Horadric Cache which dumps a bunch of items, crafter recipes, and Blood Shards to use for the new Gambler.  Bounties only last for one game session, so completing four of Act I's and leaving the game for a moment will cause all Bounties to reset. 

Two types of Rifts open up as well.  Nephalem Rifts put you in "random scenery, random enemy" environments and you go through killing enemies to fill up a meter that summons a boss when full, and then you're allowed to leave.  You also earn a Greater Rift Stone, and Greater Rifts are much like Nephalem Rifts except their difficulty is determined by the Rift itself instead of the current game setting, enemies don't drop loot, and you're timed.  15 minutes is kind of generous, but Greater Rifts have access to difficulty levels well beyond what the rest of the game does.  Clear it in time and you can win a Legendary Gem and are given opportunities to upgrade it or any others in your possession a number of times.  Get a good time and you'll jump several levels ahead on the difficulty selector, as well as place well on the leaderboard that I ignored entirely. 

A Greater Rift.  Some enemies drop orbs that add to your completion meter, but you still need to watch that orange line with the hourglass as that's the timer you need to stay ahead.  

Instead of having the "complete the game three times" difficulty loop of prior Diablos, the game starts with three difficulty levels and you unlock an additional 14 as you play.  You're able to set the difficulty to whatever you have unlocked before you enter a game, but you can only lower the difficulty while in-game.  I originally started my Monk on Expert but found the enemies too damage spongey on a new character, but I honestly could've kept it there once I had actually good gear.  I found Diablo III pretty easy my first time through the story, not dying until I very smartly jumped from Expert to Torment III in Adventure Mode and got one-shot by the first boss I came across...seven times in a row.  Enemies scale with your level but the difficulty levels boost their stats while also granting you more EXP and gold per kill.  When I stopped to eventually write this review, I was sitting at Torment VIII but could probably push it up a little bit more. 

I didn't really mind the story, but I was more of a "play the game, skip the story" player with the prior games.  There are a couple of contrivances I rolled my eyes at, but I really enjoyed that your character actually has a personality and talks so much.  You converse with NPCs instead of being a monologue-catcher and you say a hell of a lot more than a single line when entering certain areas or completing quests.  You unlock three different companions of which you can take one along with you on your travels and they too have personalities and comments and you can even have conversations with them!  I didn't try going through with other characters to see if the NPC interaction was mostly canned, but this was a nice touch for me.  I actually tried to exhaust all of the dialog options with every character just for that reason to be honest, though the little blue asterisk above their head to denote a new topic might've been a driving factor too. 

I didn't really have many issues with Diablo III.  It being forced-online sucks because you can't really play in an internet outage or on the road without a hotspot, and that in turn kills off any ability to have mods.  While I gushed about the characters having personality and all above, I also triggered their taunts (from killing a bunch of enemies in a short time) excessively often and I don't think there's a way to turn just those voicelines off.  The first time through the game is probably where the game is the worst since you're probably a burning scythe with a monofilament edge cutting through demons made of wheat, but the ability to skip the story afterwards with any character more than makes up for it as does having a wider selection of difficulties.  And I wish more games did at least the "postgame for everyone" option too.  You're pretty limited on character slots (I had ten with the expansion) which wasn't really a problem for me, but I imagine people could be constrained if they had different builds or if they wanted Seasonal characters as well as their usual roster. 

Bounties are definitely worth doing, even if most of these are crafter recipes.  

I lucked out and got Diablo III plus Reaper of Souls for very cheap, but I'd say it's worth $15-20.  The story mode is kind of short but it has pretty long legs to it.  Six different character classes, a bunch of builds based around the gear you find and use and what skills and Runes you like, and a bunch of demons and other baddies to kill, recipes to learn, achievements to farm, challenges to clear...  For me, Diablo III put more emphasis on actually getting out there and killing instead of doing research on builds so you don't permanently screw over a character with misplaced points and all, and you're even rewarded for not slowing down on killing mooks or breaking things.  I didn't have way high levels of fun playing, but I actually enjoyed my time and didn't feel like stopping midway. 

Normally, you can have one Mystic Ally out at a time.  One Legendary item doubles the number, and one Set lets you have every version out at once...and these stack.  

Though you'll need a battle.net or Blizzard whatever account, you can try part of the first Act of plain Diablo III for free with any of the original five classes.

How To Survive Cold Weather Like A Polar Explorer

It’s -16 degrees fahrenheit outside, and we’re pitching tents on a thick layer of hardened ice, preparing for a night of extreme cold weather conditions. Welcome to polar expedition training!

Twelve strangers from around the world traveled to Manitoba, Canada to spend a week camping and skiing across Lake Winnipeg, simulating the cold weather conditions of an expedition to the North Pole.

Leading our group is professional polar explorer and arctic guide Eric Larsen. Eric is no stranger to traveling in extreme winter conditions. He’s spent the past 20 years visiting some of the coldest places on earth.

In fact, he’s the only person to have trekked overland to the North Pole, the South Pole, and summited Mount Everest, unsupported, all in a single year!

Eric runs a Level 1 Polar Training Course in Canada to help prepare other adventurers for the unique challenges of camping and trekking in cold weather situations.

Cold Weather Survival Tips

Who in their right mind would want to go hiking and camping in the ice and snow? Not many. However winter travel gives hardcore wilderness-lovers the challenge they crave, and a completely different outdoor experience.

Staying safe in these freezing conditions requires a bit more planning, and a unique set of survival skills.

If you do it right, like Eric does, you shouldn’t actually feel cold — the thing preventing most of us from enjoying winter adventures in the first place.

Being prepared for cold weather is the difference between a great trip, and a miserable one.

While I love a good winter hiking trip, I don’t have tons of winter camping expereince. So I was eager to learn how Eric stays warm on his epic long-distance polar adventures in the middle of nowhere.

Trekking Across the Ice

Layering Is Critical

What does layering mean? Basically, regulating your body’s temperature by adding or removing different layers of clothing.

Because while you don’t want to get cold, you also want to prevent getting so hot that you start sweating. Sweat sucks heat away from the body, eventually making you colder.

So staying warm requires a fine balancing act. This is why wearing multiple layers helps, as you can add or remove layers depending on your level of activity.

Eric recommends a 3-4 layer system, starting with a synthetic moisture-wicking base layer to draw sweat away from your body.

Next up is a warm insulating layer, preferably fleece. Now if it’s REALLY cold, you may want to add a 2nd, thicker base layer under the fleece.

Finally, a windproof, waterproof, and breathable shell jacket (like GoreTex) to protect against the outdoor elements.

On his extreme North & South Pole trips, he also brings an oversized expedition down jacket to throw on during breaks, because your body heat quickly drops once you stop moving.

Keep Your Feet Warm

If you’re trudging through ice and snow, you need to take care of your feet. The frozen ground will quickly suck heat away from them without proper insulation, risking frostbite on your toes.

It’s wise to wear a proper winter-rated boot. Something that includes a removable insulation layer if possible, which helps you dry them out later.

Don’t pick boots that fit too tight, as you’ll need room for at least 2 layers of socks. And tight fitting boots means less blood-flow to your toes.

Eric recommends wearing thin liner socks, followed by a thicker pair of wool ones. Plus a 2nd set for sleeping in while the others dry out.

In extreme temperatures, you can also wrap plastic bags on your bare feet, wearing socks over them. This “vapor barrier” traps in heat while also preventing your socks from getting soaked with sweat.

Remember To Hydrate

It’s sometimes easy to forget drinking water is important in the cold, because we’re so used to feeling thirsty in hot weather. But staying well hydrated is an important part of any outdoor winter adventure.

Eric recommends taking a break every hour from your activity (hiking, skiing, etc.) for a drink. Make it a regular routine. Proper hydration maintains good blood flow and other bodily functions — helping you stay warm.

Filling a bottle up with hot water helps prevent it freezing, as does using an insulated container or cover of some kind. Drinking warm water keeps your body warm from the inside.

There are different types of cold too. For example, at the North Pole, the air is wet & humid (feels much colder). But Antarctica is basically a dry desert — so staying hydrated in that environment is more difficult.

Time for Adventure!

Stay On Schedule

In cold winter camping situations, setting up and taking down your campsite takes longer than it does in the summer. It’s important to stay aware of what time it is.

For example, stopping early enough to prepare camp before the sun goes down. Timing regular snack and soup breaks to keep you warm during the day. But not too long — or you’ll quickly get cold standing around.

Using a weather-proof watch like the Promaster Altichron from Citizen, the same watch Eric uses on his expeditions, really makes this easy.

Not only does the watch hold up to the extreme -40 F temperatures found at the North Pole, it’s also powered by the sun, which means you never have to worry about dead batteries.

The Altichron features an integrated compass and altimeter too. Having backups of these adventure tools on your wrist, in something that won’t run out of battery power in cold weather, is handy for peace of mind.

Fur Ruff, Goggles, and a Nose Break

Head & Neck Protection

There are many blood vessels near the skin’s surface on your head and neck. Exposing them to cold weather cools your blood down quickly, which then flows into the rest of your body lowering overall temperature.

Obviously a good winter hat that covers your ears is required. Fur lined hats or jacket hoods with a fur ruff work especially well, which is why they’re common in places like Siberia and Alaska.

Another piece of gear Eric recommended is a simple balaclava ski mask that only exposes part of the face.

Stretching a buff over everything holds your head warmth system together, in addition to providing yet another layer of protection. Remember, layers!

If it’s going to be windy, winter goggles and a face mask or homemade “nose break” will protect the last of your exposed skin while still allowing you to breathe freely.

Camping in the Snow

Winter Shelter Systems

You wouldn’t think the thin nylon walls of a tent would protect you much outside in the winter, but it can. In fact, even a shelter made of snow can keep you alive!

When choosing a shelter for survival in cold temperatures, pick a 4 seasons rated tent. A tent that’s specifically made for camping in the Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter.

Four season tents have less mesh netting than 3 season tents, meaning they hold heat in better. Winter tents also come with larger vestibule areas where you can keep snow-covered boots and outerwear, outside.

Tramp down the snow to create a firm & level base for setting up your tent. Place the tent door perpendicular to the wind. Pile snow onto the bottom outside edges as an additional wind barrier.

Snow is a great insulator! So if you ever find yourself stuck in the wilderness without a tent, building an emergency snow-cave shelter may help you survive the night.

Re-Fueling With a Hot Meal

Fuel Your Body

On Eric’s two month long ski expeditions to the Earth’s poles, the weight of his sled full of supplies can top 300 pounds. So maximizing food calories while also minimizing weight is essential.

To be as efficient as possible, he prefers to remove meals from their original fancy packaging, using thin plastic bags instead. He also packs each day’s meals together for easy & quick access.

Choose foods that can be eaten cold or require very little prep time. Granola. Salami. Cheese. Trail mix.

Eating food is like putting fuel on a fire. Your metabolism kicks into action to digest it, heating up your core body temperature and radiating outwards through the bloodstream.

Instant soup is also a regular staple of Eric’s arctic diet. He prepares it in the morning, storing in an insulated flask for later. Eating hot soup is wonderful for emotional support, hydration, and warmth.

Sleeping In The Cold

You are not going to have a great time on your cold weather adventure if you can’t recharge with a good night’s sleep! That’s why it’s so important to pack a warm & comfortable sleep system.

You lose way more heat from the ground through conduction than you do from the air. So during our training we used two sleeping pads — at least one made of closed-cell foam, the other can be an insulated inflatable type.

To stay warm in -16 degree F temperatures, I used a 0F/-18C down sleeping bag that cinched up close to my face keeping the heat inside, as well as a 20F bag over that. This way if any frost builds up inside the tent, it doesn’t penetrate into your main bag.

Before going to bed, we also filled a Nalgene bottle with boiling water and placed it inside our sleeping bags. This makeshift hot-water bottle will radiate heat for about 5 hours of bliss.

Frostbite & Hypothermia

The dangers of cold weather travel are real, and include frostbite and hypothermia. So I wanted talk a bit about how to identify and treat these conditions.

Frostbite is when yo­ur skin falls below the freezing point, causing ice crystals to form in your cells, killing them. Your skin will change color to red, then white, and if it’s really bad, black.

It’s very important to warm your skin gradually. Sticking your fingers or toes into hot water can make it worse! Instead, try your armpits. Or soaking in luke-warm water.

Hypothermia is when your body loses more heat than it produces, and your core body temperature drops. Symptoms include slurred speech, loss of coordination, uncontrollable shivering, and mental confusion.

To treat hypothermia, it’s important to remove wet clothing and put on dry stuff, get into a sleeping bag, break out the emergency space blanket, start a fire, etc. Warm up as soon as possible.

Eric believes in the importance of being “selfish” during cold-weather adventures. In order for the whole team to function, each member needs to pay attention to their own health & comfort.

So if you’re feeling a bit cold, it’s ok to stop the group and put on another layer — before it turns into more serious problems that will affect everyone later (like caring for frostbite or hypothermia).

Maybe you aren’t planning a trek to the North Pole. Or even spending one night winter camping. But on regular winter day hikes or car trips, you should still have some basic cold weather emergency gear with you:

Fire-starting kit with waterproof matches & lighter

3/4 piece of closed-cell foam pad insulation

Emergency bivy bag and space blanket

Spare hat & gloves

Extra fleece mid-layer

Chemical hand-warmers/heat packs

Your chances of surviving the night outside in the cold without these essentials drops significantly, so it’s wise to pack them with you just in case.

Maybe you get injured. Maybe the weather changes. Maybe you get lost. Maybe your car breaks down.

No one ever plans on getting into trouble. It just happens!

North Pole: The Last Degree

Trekking around Manitoba’s frozen Lake Winnipeg and learning polar expedition skills from Eric stoked my enthusiasm for future cold-weather adventures. His advice has really helped me become better prepared.

Many of my fellow students are planning expeditions of their own to the North Pole, South Pole, or crossing Greenland’s ice cap! Hanging out with them was pretty inspiring.

Right now Eric is leading his next Arctic expedition, a North Pole Last Degree trip.

This means participants fly up to the 89th parallel and then proceed to ski the last 60 nautical miles to the Geographic North Pole. It takes about 12 days.
