to be clear I love the champion point system bc it's a fun spin on the MMO-standard of raising the overall level cap and it's nice to have something with actual effects on my character to progress on (the much, much faster leveling at veteran rank doesn't make it a slog either, and it's obviously something you're meant to gain passively doing what you were normally doing) even after the 'soft' level cap and gear stat cap and doesn't make me feel like I'm wasting exp doing things like questing, world bosses, delves, etc bc technically I'm still leveling.
but tbh the main reason I like it is bc they had the genuinely good idea to make cp points a) account-wide and b) usable by every character on the account even if they're not high enough level to actually level cps themselves, and I like that you're tacitly rewarded not just for doing things on your main but for having alts and having them at max level bc every cp level makes every single one of your characters stronger even at level 1.
#saint.txt#long post#a good example to contrast ig is ff.xiv#which VERY strongly does not want you to have alts. everything abt it is designed so that you don't need to.#you can replay the story whenever you want - no need to remake a character.#the class system is designed so that one character has free access to every job that you can switch between#freely at any time and even your gear is shared between different classes.#so you don't need to make multiple characters to test out that job that looks cool which is a blessing and a curse#bc imo trying new classes or builds is a major reason for why you make alts.#great if you're a raider or smth or just don't like juggling multiple characters bc everything is convenient! I love it for that#but ff.xiv's system SUCKS if you're say. an avid RPer or just someone who likes to make alts and level them through content#or just someone who likes to make multiple characters for literally any reason.#want to try playing a different player race? well your options are make an alt and spend no joke at least like#a hundred+ hours getting them caught up to your main#....or spend real money and buy a fantasia or a level skip. all of which suck.#or most other MMOs are like. we want you to get to max level asap. but once you do that's kinda just it. you have an alt that sits there#masteries in g.w2 are similar and it's why I like those too. but eso's lasts a lot longer than masteries#I think the alt problem in MMOs is kinda unsolvable tbh pretty much no matter what you do the bigger#an MMO gets the more tedious the leveling process of alts goes when you don't have the novelty of new content#and learning new systems to distract you but I like that ESO rewards you for trying by making your alts much much much#stronger and more effective which makes everything faster w/ champion points#and that if your alts are at max level you can still make meaningful progress on them for your main#idk. am I making sense here

blooming panic ffxiv headcanons
nakedtoaster: - well we know he plays the game, duhhh. probably been playing for a few years and hasn’t stopped since - savage & extremes are his bread and butter. has a few world-first’s under their belt. - used to main an elezen, likely a dragoon because they’re COOL. estinien was his fave npc for a long time (broody elezen + elf in his game??? duh, it was inevitable) each job is max level and he doesn’t ‘main’ just one anymore. he plays whatever the raid team needs/is feeling at the minute. - fantasia’s for fun a LOT but fantasia’d into a viera once MC started playing one when they finally started playing (i know, i know it says au ra in his good route BUT THESE ARE MY HEADCANONS OK???) just so they could match and hasn’t felt the urge to fantasia back yet because ~euphoria~ - loves getting people into the game; whenever friends join, he gives them some gil and a small little ‘starter pack’ of food, cool gear to glam into, and some minions. - ALWAYS itching at the chance to help his friends run through shit. you need to do a dungeon? you’re already invited to the party and queued up. as soon as someone says they need help, toaster is right. there. - in a bunch of different linkshells. has an fc for closest buddies. in a static with raiding people. but they don’t seem to intersect. it’s allll different people and it’s going to stay that way. - has every mount, minion, and achievement they could possibly get. - actually finds the gold saucer to be a pain in the ass, but will ABSOLUTELY decimate you in a chocobo race
xyx: - started playing to get toaster to shut. up. ended up actually enjoying it. it’s a really good way to relieve stress from work. - made himself a miqo’te because of cat, but will never admit that. his character looks very similar to him, though. mostly done as a way to help toast find him in-game. - only ever uses the sds fenrir mount. if he’s with friends, he’ll use the regalia so they can hop in. - refuses to play anything other than dps. he does not want to be responsible for other people or for carrying the raid. - had a really hard time choosing which job to start as; went with pugilist, but ended up grabbing all the dps he could at a low level but has mained machinist since unlocking it. pew pew pew. - likely skipped most of arr’s cutscenes, especially post-arr and a little bit into heavensward, until toaster yelled at him. he moaned that it was too much reading and he had to do that for work, but ended up enjoying the story more than he thought he would. - an absolute pro at the gold saucer. spent most of his time there, since it allowed for the rush and high risk/reward of gambling without spending actual money. he also unironically loves the gold saucer music and has it in his main playlist. - he’ll do raids for story, but he doesn’t get a kick out of doing them otherwise, no matter how many times toast has asked him to join his raid team, he always refuses. - cried more times than he cares to admit because of the story.
nightowl: - he wanted to see what the fuss was all about. on a fun night of drinks (nothing excessive!) he finally downloaded and started playing - was trolled by xyx and toaster into playing a female lalafell, but ended up finding her adorable and refuses to fantasia into anything else. - bought a boost and story skip, much to toasty’s dismay, then complained that he had no idea what was going on in the story. after getting reamed at by toast, he watched all the cutscenes (though, admittedly, still has no real clue) - glamour. whore. he runs through old content repeatedly to get specific pieces. because of his math knowledge, he knows how to play marketboard really well and gets super rich, super quick - even though it was all just to buy glam pieces. his glamour plates are full and he’s constantly changing them (one for his main class, one for gold saucer, one for just hanging out, etc) - has spent entirely too much real life money on this game. mounts, emotes, and dye are his weakness. every time there’s a new mount or emote, he buys it. - matches his minions to his glamour. it’s all about the aesthetics, baby. - there are a few spots he found just by wandering and exploring and will often return to them, just to sit at and listen to the music/ambience while doing homework or studying. - on the other hand, he 100% AFK’s in limsa, while doing some dance emote. - makes a half-decent healer! toasty taught him how to play astro (absolutely in hopes that nightowl would want to raid with him) and he ended up enjoying it more than he thought he would. he also loves bard, even if only to do performances in cities (and you can bet he uses bard player, but he’s taken the time to learn how to play a couple songs himself, or make his own compositions)
quest: - REFUSED for the longest time. he only started playing when he finally had some time off work but didn’t tell anybody. it was very much a curiosity thing. - he had absolutely no idea what he was doing, and ended up making an au ra gladiator, not knowing it was a tank class (honestly the terms kind of went over his head - he just never got into mmo’s before). he panicked a bit when it came time to do his first dungeon, but the other people in the group were really kind and patient and explained things to him. he ended up loving it (even if it did remind him a bit of his mod duties in the server) - did every single side quest in every single zone as he went, on top of msq. he was questing (haha) for m o n t h s before finishing arr. it was about halfway through that he finally told toaster, because he was getting a little impatient with how long it was taking to get through the story. toast was overjoyed and explained everything thoroughly. - HIGHLY enjoyed the story and related a ton to a bunch of the characters - especially urianger. (and a few from later expansions that i won’t list for spoiler reasons but the biggest one was everyone’s favourite grumpy old man with severe back problems) - he picked up all the gathering and crafting jobs asap and finds immense joy in them. it’s a good way for him to turn off his brain and not have to think about *anything*. he likes making things for his friends, too! and sells everything else on the marketboard so he’s got a decent chunk of change. - got a house on a total and complete whim, purely by being lucky and clicking at *just* the right time. he had no idea what it meant until toast & xyx explained it to him, then he got SUPER into decorating. he changes the interior of his house every few months and decorates for every season. it’s a neat little slice of domesticity. (he also shares the house with MC, unbeknownst to the others) - he doesn’t get to play that often because of work, so he really values the time he does get in-game and will sometimes go on weekend-long binges, especially after a rough week. - will NOT hesitate to report someone for being shitty. he’s gotten a few people banned that way, but has zero regrets. he has a zero tolerance policy, and he knows square does too. - he’s very diligent about doing his daily/weekly things. he likes the routine of it all, and it gives him a sense of accomplishment, even if it is just in a video game.
