Also, I was recently told I speak like an old person so as a warning, there will not be any slang you youths typically hear, especially on Tumblr. Any slang I’ve learned in the last five years has been against my will. I still don’t know what FOMO means, and I don’t care.)

1. Oh no! You and your family are trying to enjoy a movie night, but Overlord Prime (With Free Shipping) wants a sacrifice at the altar of their god, BeeZos. Should this happen, do not attempt to give Overlord Prime (With Free Shipping) a cantaloupe with googly-eyes on it and say that it is your baby. Overlord Prime (With Free Shipping) knows the difference between fruit and children. Instead, ask the machine to order dog food, and it will forget about eating humans for a little while.

2. If you own a very fancy vehicle that can drive itself, always make sure to carry a brick. You will then have to jump out, but make sure you do so in time so you can watch the wicked-ass explosion when the car hits the gas station, and you can revel in your victory over your car.

To be safe, after you’ve finished reading this post and have clicked on the affiliated links to purchase my books, you should throw your phone into a volcano and then move to South Dakota where there are no machines, only wind and cows. That way, when everyone else gets the 5GZombieVirus that people on Twitter (I’m not calling it the other thing, shut up) seem to think is real, you’ll be safe with your cows on a windy day.

4. Get rid of your air fryer. Don’t ask me why, just do it. Red flags all around. Danger, danger.

5. Do you know of the Clapper? That thing first launched in the late 20th century (I wrote it that way to make me feel old) where the commercials showed cranky old people unable to reach their light switches, so they got a thing called a Clapper that turns your lights on and off when you clap? Guess what? Those will be the first things to try and kill you. If you love your gram-gram, save her from the Clapper. When she asks why you are destroying it with an ax, tell gram-gram it’s because you love her.

6. Do you live in a smart home? The kind where everything is connected to the internet, including your refrigerator? The refrigerator that holds your perishable foods? And oh, would you look at that: how many ice cubes have you kicked under it rather than picking them up when they fall to the floor? A dozen? A million? The refrigerator remembers. And it will spoil your food in seconds. What then? What are you going to eat? Canned food? Not if the refrigerator falls on top of you!

Unfortunately for you, this is where it must end. I hope this has given you enough information to help you survive the inevitable. If you do not heed my warnings, well. Who cares. I’m not in charge of you. Do whatever you want. Just don’t come complaining to me when gram-gram gets the clap.

summary: a few instances where pedri completely loves how shy and quiet his girlfriend gets around him.

“dios mío, estás tan guapa.” (my god, you look so gorgeous) pedri stated as he looked towards his girlfriend, who stood in front of her mirror checking her outfit. his eyes raked down the pretty, blue sundress she had on and y/n could see him practically drooling through the reflection in the full length mirror.

the blood instantly pooled on the surface of her cheeks, staining her bare skin a rosy tint. she blushed hard under his gaze and the small smile that tugged tightly at her lips caused a grin to form on her boyfriends’.

pedri got up from the bed, where he was mindlessly playing some game on her phone because he refused to download it on his own. it’s more fun on your phone, he’d normally say.

he was already dressed in his own outfit as they were both getting ready to meet up with his family at their house for dinner. y/n stared at his face as he made his way over, his beard still growing out as he couldn’t be bothered to shave it lately.

y/n would never admit to him how much she loved his beard and how handsome she found him with it. never. her words wouldn’t even be able to come out clearly with how shy she gets around him, how his presence just burns her whole body alive with warmth and the inability to stop blushing.

pedri reached her and his arms wrapped themselves around her waist. his bearded chin rested against her bare shoulder and the stubbly feeling of it tickled her skin, making her giggle slightly.

pedris head came to rest against hers as her hands held his arms, encasing her against his body.

“pedriii…” she slightly whined, goosebumps spiking up along her arms at the feel of his thumb rubbing circles on the sides of her hips.

“i don’t wanna leave anymore, let’s stay here.” he mumbled and left a small peck against her shoulder.

it seemed as though she didn’t even need makeup as her cheeks were already bright red. her voice was low as she spoke to him, “no, we need to leave in a few minutes, c’mon.” she stroked his arm.

pedri hummed and turned his head so that his lips were now resting against the side of her face, his mouth hovering over her warm cheek. he started pressing kisses to her flesh and the soft giggle that left her mouth didn’t go unnoticed by him as he smiled against her.

“god, i love that sound.” pedri mumbled and fuck, now her cheeks were hurting from smiling so much.

“pedri..” she breathily whispered. he looked at her reflection in the mirror and the smirk that formed on his rosy lips at the sight of her flustered expression had her knees instantly weak.

“don’t get all shy on me now, querida.”

y/n held eye contact with him in the mirror for approximately five seconds before those big brown eyes were cutting through her whole body and ripping her gaze away from his intense, teasing one.

she slapped his hand away, hating the way he always teased her vulnerability around him. however, the lopsided smile still clung to her lips as she sternly tried to tell him off for his last minute shenanigans . “stop it, come on. your parents are probably waiting.”

pedris hand came to interlock with y/ns as the tv shone its bright light onto them from the front. the pair were seated in pedris living room on a random thursday night, deciding on watching a movie to spend their free time together.

it was still relatively early into their relationship, perhaps only 2-3 months and y/n didn’t deny how shy she still felt around him. every little thing he did for her, said to her, made her body shake with nerves and her cheeks fill with blush.

and this small gesture he just did, gently sliding his fingers between hers on her lap, had her screaming on the inside. his hands were so soft against hers, so warm and smooth. she wanted to move her thumb, to rub against his tender skin but would that be weird? she didn’t know, she hadn’t done all this before.

y/n practically froze on the spot and pedri felt her body stiffen beside his as he looked over at her. when he rubbed his thumb against her thumb, she exhaled the breath she was holding in and relaxed into her seat.

pedri watched the blush rise to her cheeks and her eyes flutter gently as she tenderly tightened her fingers around his hand, signalling to him it was okay and she was comfortable.

y/n turned to look at him to see him already tentatively looking at her, and pedri melted on the spot at the little shy look she gave him - her mouth pulled into a tight-lipped smile and her cheeks a bright colour of crimson.

he couldn’t wait to pull more of these pretty, shy smiles out of her.

pedri walked into his girlfriends apartment with her favourite chocolates and a new book in hand. he knew she’d been wanting to read this book for quite a while and so, on his way back from training, he made a quick stop at a random bookstore to see if they had it.

they did, and he coupled it with a big box of her favourite chocolates just to see that extra wide smile on her face and twinkle in her eyes. to see that deep tint of blush on her soft, supple cheeks.

the sound of dishes clattering around in the kitchen could be heard when he walked in and so he made his way over with a mischievous smile lurking on his lips. y/n was stood at the stove infront of a pot of boiling water, with her phone in hand.

pedri, with the surprises clamped behind his back, snuck up on his girlfriend. he did a little jog towards her and pressed his lips to her cheek in a quick kiss.

y/n smiled. she knew he was back as she heard the door open. she recognised his footsteps against the flooring.

“oh, pedri you scared me.” she told him, a hint of sarcasm lacing her voice as her eyes stayed glued to her phone but the smile stayed on her lips.

“i was going for a more realistic reaction but that’ll do.” he laid another kiss to her cheek before leaning back up to his normal height, towering over her by a few inches.

y/n locked her phone and looked up at her boy. he was freshly showered, smelt like his usual handsomeness and she instantly noticed his two hands, that would usually be engulfing her body and wandering in random places at this time of day, were currently stuck behind his back.

“what’re you hiding?” she raised her brows.

“i have a little surprise. close your eyes.” he snickered and her look of curiosity turned to one of confusion. with a huff and without question, she closed her eyes and pedri revealed his two little presents with a grin on his face.

“vale, open.”

she gasped as her eyes instantly set onto the cover of that book that lay somewhere deep within her amazon cart, but she’d been wanting to read it for so long now. excitement rapidly settled into her stomach but her heart rate practically zoomed through her chest when she saw the box of her favourite chocolates in his hands.

the blush couldn’t stop itself from painting her flesh and she gaped up at him.

“pedri!” she reached for them and admired them whilst he admired her, satisfied with her reaction this time.

he watched as she placed them both down on the counter next to her and threw her arms around his taller frame. her lips instantly attacked his in a sudden kiss but he didn’t mind as he slotted his lips against hers and she kissed her gratitude into him. she laid quick pecks against his mouth and cheek before staring at him in extreme infatuation. she adored this man so fucking much.

“you didn’t have to.” he loved this heavenly expression on her features; her eyes sparkling, her cheeks flushed, her lips pulled into her usual shy smile.

“i wanted to.”

“c’mon a big smile!” pedri practically cheered as he held the phone out in front of him. y/n stood infront of the floral pattern of the wall behind her as pedri insisted he take some pictures.

memories, he said. memories of how good you look right now.

y/n started blushing with the looks they were getting from some people walking past. some weird and some smiling. her hand came up to cover her face as the low laughter shook from her body at the sight of pedri so focused on the pictures yet so unfocused on the people around them.

pedri smiled to himself, staring at his beautiful girlfriend through the lens of the camera. the light was displaying itself in just the right angles and everything looked so perfect, even his camera skills may he add. however, it still did her beauty no justice, he had to admit.

he couldn’t wait to just sit in his bed later that evening to stare at these pictures - she just looked so ethereal right now.

the fondness that took over y/ns body presents itself on her face as she shyly smiled at the camera, tilting her head as pedri kept snapping some pictures. just when she thought that was enough and started walking back towards pedri, he shook his head and signalled her to step back so he could get a few more shots.

“pedri, i’m sure that’s enough for you to stare at.” she joked, as if she just knew he was falling even more in love with her right now.

“no it’s not, please, just a few more.” she pouted and practically pleaded with her eyes for them to stop because she couldn’t handle how out of her comfort zone this felt, infront of so many prying eyes.

but the desperate look on her boys face made her stand back and pose with a smile on her face for a few more seconds. pedri was then beckoning her over to look through them. she swiped through them with low giggles, knowing how seriously he was taking this, and it made her heart leap.

“so gorgeous.” pedri stared at her, loving the flustered look on her face at his compliment.

“you look amazing, amor. mi preciosa.” he tucked some of her hair back behind her ear.

in that moment, he made a mental note to take more picutes of her often just so he could see this sweet, shy look on her face again.

So you just joined Tumblr?

Tumblr basics + Fandoms/Gifmaking

Congratulations, you just landed at Tumblr! This hellsite (affectionate) can seem intimidating and complicated at first, but once you grasp the basics of it it’ll quickly turn into your own personal little hut in the forest. Tumblr is a website where you and only you curate your dashboard, you’ll see the content that you seek on your own. In this post, I’ll explain the basics of Tumblr and the basics of how fandoms function here with the help of Bob. Okay, let’s get started.

1. Blog customization

The first thing you should do as soon as you land on Tumblr is add a profile picture and header before you interact with people. You want to be distinguishable from bots and therefore avoid getting blocked. You can also add anything to your bio, there's no character limit. Some folks add their name and pronouns, but there are no rules about that. There are also no rules about profile pictures. It can be a picture of you, a picture of your dog, a picture of a rock, or a picture of your favorite character. If you plan on staying on the fandom side, you might notice that a lot of fandom blogs have colorful-looking icons (a cutout of a character on a colorful background), for these icons and also headers I suggest checking out source blogs that make those icons. For starters, @iconheadersource is a goldmine where you definitely going to find something that’d suit you and your blog.

Tumblr on mobile and Tumblr on desktop are two different creatures when it comes to customization. On the desktop, you can customize your blog with coding (HTML + JS). Now Bob will demonstrate to us some examples of blogs on desktop.

2. Search Engine

Nice! You've made your blog look pretty! Now, let's shift our focus to the search engine and ways to discover content. As mentioned earlier, you curate your dashboard by looking for things you enjoy and like. Search using hashtags or the names of your interests (TV shows, movies, birds, music, etc.) to find your piece of cake. For instance, folks who create posts about TV shows you like use tags to ensure their posts reach others interested in the same thing. So, let's go ahead and search for something right now.

Once you search for that specific tag, you are redirected to the corresponding tag page. Here, you can see that posts are sorted by "Latest" or "Top" (indicating posts with the most notes). On the right side, you will find related tags and blogs which are frequently using the searched tag. By following the tag, both the tag itself and the posts tagged with it will automatically appear on your dashboard in the "Your tags" section. You have the option to filter tags according to your preferences. In the settings, you can choose to block specific tags if you prefer not to see content related to some particular topics.

The only method for sharing posts and content on this website is through reblogging. On Tumblr, reposting others' content, including art, gifs, and fics, is not accepted. Reposting means downloading art, gifs, etc., creating your own post, and then sharing it. And that's a big no-no, strongly discouraged. Your likes essentially function as bookmarks, and you have the option to set them to be private. When you save something, it doesn't appear on your friends' dashboards.

We don't censor things here, and I advise you not to do so too. If you need to mention a word that might be potentially triggering or could be flagged on another social media, feel free to say it. Many users have specific topics and tags filtered out, so if you use variations like "K!tKat" instead of "KitKat" in the tags, it can bypass the tag filter, potentially causing more harm as people will see content that triggers them. And remember to always tag posts that have flickering or flashing!!!

If you want to organize your reblogs or make comments on a reblog, use the tags section and not the comments section itself. This is called "#add tags." Feel free to type whatever you want, but keep in mind that the original poster receives notifications when someone reblogs their post and adds tags. Yes, all tags are visible to us.

3. Social interactions

So let's move on to one of the crucial topics - how to make friends on Tumblr? Personally, I don't think there's one particular formula for that. Sometimes you just see a funny bloke posting about something as random as desert rain frogs, grab them, and go "You're my friend now" and that's how you become mutuals.

However, there are other, more common ways to become friends with someone. You can start by reblogging someone's post, adding tags to the reblog, and then following the person. Create your own posts, tag them to ensure they reach the folks who are interested in the same things as you, and participate in fandom events and challenges if you're into that. Interact with people you want to befriend, message them, send them asks. You will eventually find your crowd. You'll also find swifties, and fans of supernatural who never moved on from that destiel love confession four years ago, they also can be your friends, at some point, you will become friends and chill with each other. Be open to new interests to make sure your dashboard is not dull and boring.

Tumblr doesn't have the supposed hierarchy, and you don't have to listen to anyone who tells you otherwise, you curate your own experience and blocking is pretty normalized here. Notes and followers (which are private for everyone) don't really matter, stick to your beliefs and your vibe and you'll be fine. We're all equal losers here.

4. Fandom / Gifmaking

Fandoms play a significant role on Tumblr, they're closely tied with gifmaking. As a fellow creature of fandom, I'm adding this part because we don't gatekeep - more gifmakers and fandom enthusiasts mean a better fandom experience. As I mentioned earlier, everything has its tag, making it easy to find your favorite TV show fandom by searching for the tag. This is also how you can connect with people who share an interest in that specific TV show. Upon entering the tag, you'll stumble upon numerous moving pictures – these are GIFs. People create GIFs of everything, from their "blorbo" (the term for favorite character) to beloved ships and favorite moments. There are also plenty of creative GIFs with different coloring and complicated effects. And the best part? You can do it too!

There are a lot of ways to make GIFs. Some people use Photoshop, and some use Photopea which is an excellent accessible option. I'll be linking posts for Photoshop under this text. For Photopea tutorials and guides, please check out @photopeablr.

I've been making GIFs for three years at this point, and those are the tutorials I used when I was just starting out:

Wait but what's a source blog? These are blogs that center around a specific theme, creating content for a particular topic. They are managed by multiple editors, these blogs track their own tags to reblog content related to the theme. They can be source blogs dedicated to gifmaking (just like @usergif), a TV show, a movie, a character, a celebrity, a sports team, or literally anything else. Typically, these blogs incorporate terms like "network," "source," "central," "creators," "hub," or "daily" in their usernames, making them easily distinguishable from regular personal blogs. Examples of source blogs that come to my mind right now are @dailyanakin, @heartstoppercentral, and @nancywheelercentral.

Let's also talk about tracking tags, which are often included in blogs's bios, whether they're from source blogs or solo gifmakers. You can add these tags to your posts when creating a gifset related to a specific source blog or something you know a particular gifmaker would appreciate. Basically, the gifmaker can search their tracking tag, much like a regular Tumblr tag, and view the most recent sets in which someone used their tag.

The last thing I want to talk about are usernames, and main and side blogs. On Tumblr, we have two types of blogs: the main blog and the side blog. The main blog is the initial blog created when you sign up for your account. This blog has full functionality and all features, allowing you to follow other blogs, like posts, and send asks to other blogs. In addition to the main blog, you can create side blogs on your account. Side blogs lack some of the features of main blogs; you can't like posts, follow other blogs, or send asks from a side blog. They have slightly different functionality – a side blog can be password-protected, have multiple users, and allow you to send direct messages to people. Other users can follow your side blog, and you can receive asks from them.

Many people use side blogs as URL holders. For instance, when a new TV show is announced, someone might be the quickest to save all canonical character names. You can then message that empty side blog to inquire if they're willing to trade that specific URL or if it's available for a giveaway. Canonical URLs are often challenging to obtain, so many people add letters in between or at the end or use symbols like "-", and they also mix names and surnames of different characters.

Hello everyone! I hope you're relaxing as best you can this holiday season. I recently went to see Miyazaki's latest Ghibli movie, The Boy and the Heron, and I had some thoughts about it. If you're into art historical allusions and gently cranky opinions, please enjoy. I've attached a downloadable PDF in the Patreon post if you'd prefer to read it that way. Please note that this writing contains some mild spoilers for The Boy and the Heron.

Hayao Miyazaki’s 2023 feature animated film The Boy and the Heron reads as an extended meditation on grief and legacy. The Master of a grand tower seeks a descendant to carry on his maddening duty, balancing toy blocks of magical stone upon which the entire fabric of his little pocket of reality rests. The world’s foundations are frail and fleeting, and can pass away into the cold void of space should he neglect to maintain this task. The Master’s desire to pass the torch undergirds much of the film’s narrative.

Arnold Böcklin, a Swiss Symbolist(1) painter, was born on October 16 in 1827, the same year the Swiss Evangelical Reformed Church bought a plot of land in Florence from the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II, that had long been used for the burials of Protestants around Florence. It is colloquially known as The English Cemetery, so called because it was the resting place of many Anglophones and Protestants around Tuscany, and Böcklin frequented this cemetery—his workshop was adjacent and his infant daughter Maria was buried there. In 1880, he drew inspiration from the cemetery, a lone plot of Protestant land among a sea of Catholic graveyards, and began to paint what would be the first of six images entitled Isle of the Dead. An oil on canvas piece, it depicts a moody little island mausoleum crowned with a gently swaying grove of cypresses, a type of tree common in European cemeteries and some of which are referred to as arborvitae. A figure on a boat, presumably Charon, ferries a soul toward the island and away from the viewer.

The Isle of the Dead paintings varied slightly from version to version, with figures and names added and removed to suit the needs of the time or the commissioner. The painting was glowingly referenced and remained fairly popular throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The painting used to be inescapable in much of European popular culture. Professor Okulicz-Kozaryn, a philologist (someone with a deep interest in the ways language and cultural canons evolve)(2) observed that the painting, like many other works in its time, was itself iterative and became widely reiterated and referenced among its contemporaries. It became something like Romantic kitsch in the eyes of modern art critics, overwrought and excessively Byronic. I imagine Miyazaki might also resent a work of that level of manufactured ubiquity, as Miyazaki famously held Disney animated films in contempt (3). Miyazaki’s films are popularly aspirational to young animators and cartoonists, but gestures at imitation typically fall well short, often reducing Miyazaki’s weighty films to kitschy images of saccharine vibes and a lazy indulgence in a sort of empty magical domestic coziness. Being trapped in a realm of rote sentiment by an uncritical, unthoughtful viewership is its own Isle of Death.

The Boy and the Heron follows a familiar narrative arc to many of Miyazaki’s other films: a child must journey through a magical and quietly menacing world in order to rescue their loved ones. This arc is an echo of Satsuki’s journey to find Mei in My Neighbor Totoro (1988) and Chihiro’s journey to rescue her parents Spirited Away (2001). To better understand Miyazaki’s fixation with this particular character journey, it can be instructive to watch Lev Atamanov’s 1957 animated film, The Snow Queen (4)(5), a beautifully realized take on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 children’s story (6)(7). Mahito’s journey continues in this tradition, as the boy travels into a painted world to rescue his new stepmother from a mysterious tower.

Throughout the film, Miyazaki visually references Isle of the Dead. Transported to a surreal world, Mahito initially awakens on a little green island with a gated mausoleum crowned with cypress trees. He is accosted by hungry pelicans before being rescued by a fisherwoman named Kiriko. After a day of catching and gutting fish, Mahito wakes up under the fisherwoman’s dining table, surrounded by kokeshi—little wooden dolls—in the shapes of the old women who run Mahito’s family’s rural household. Mahito is told they must not be touched, as the kokeshi are wards set up for his protection. There is a popular urban legend associated with the kokeshi wherein they act as stand-ins for victims of infanticide, though there seems to be very little available writing to support this legend. Still, it’s a neat little trick that Miyazaki pulls, placing a stray reference to a local legend of unverifiable provenance that persists in the popular imagination, like the effect of fairy stories passed on through oral retellings, continually remolded each new iteration.

Kiriko’s job in this strange landscape is to catch fish to nourish unborn spirits, the adorable floating warawara, before they can attempt to ascend on a journey into the world of the living. Their journey is thwarted by flocks of supernatural pelicans, who swarm the warawara and devour them. This seems to nod to the association of pelicans with death in mythologies around the world, especially in relationship to children (8). Miyazaki’s pelicans contemplate the passing of their generations as each successive generation seems to regress, their capacity to fulfill their roles steadily diminishing.

As Mahito’s adventure continues, we find the landscapes changing away from Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead into more familiar Ghibli territories as we start to see spaces inspired by one of Studio Ghibli’s aesthetic mainstays, Naohisa Inoue and his explorations of the fantasy realms of Iblard. He might be most familiar to Ghibli enthusiasts as the background artists for the more fantastical elements of Whisper of the Heart (1995).

By the time we arrive at the climax of The Boy and the Heron, the fantasy island environment starts to resemble English takes on Italian gardens, the likes of which captivated illustrators and commercial artists of the early 20th century such as Maxfield Parrish. This appears to be a return to one of Böcklin’s later paintings, The Island of Life (1888), a somewhat tongue-in-cheek reaction to the overwhelming presence of Isle of the Dead in his life and career. The Island of Life depicts a little spot of land amid an ocean very like the one on which Isle of the Dead’s somber mausoleum is depicted, except this time the figures are lively and engaged with each other, the vegetation lush and colorful, replete with pink flowers and palm fronds.

In 2022, Russia’s State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg acquired the sixth and final Isle of the Dead painting. In the last year of his life, Arnold Böcklin would paint this image in collaboration with his son Carlo Böcklin, himself an artist and an architect. Arnold Böcklin spent three years painting the same image three times over at the site of his infant daughter’s grave, trapped on the Isle of the Dead. By the time of his death in 1901 at age 74, Böcklin would be survived by only five of his fourteen children. That the final Isle of the Dead painting would be a collaboration between father and son seemed a little ironic considering Hayao Miyazaki’s reticence in passing on his own legacy. Like the old Master in The Boy and the Heron, Miyazaki finds himself with no true successors.

The Master of the Tower's beautiful islands of painted glass fade into nothing as Mahito, his only worthy descendant, departs to live his own life, fulfilling the thesis of Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 book How Do You Live?, published three years after Carlo Böcklin’s death. In evoking Yoshino and Böcklin’s works, Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron suggests that, like his character the Master, Miyazaki himself must make peace with the notion that he has no heirs to his legacy, and that those whom he wished to follow in his footsteps might be best served by finding their own paths.

INFORMAL ENDNOTES

1 - Symbolists are sort of tough to nail down. They were started as a literary movement to 1 distinguish themselves from the Decadents, but their manifesto was so vague that critics and academics fight about it to this day. The long and the short of it is that the Symbolists made generous use of a lot of metaphorical imagery in their work. They borrow a lot of icons from antiquity, echo the moody aesthetics from the Romantics, maintained an emphasis on figurative imagery more so than the Surrealists, and were only slightly more technically married to the trappings of traditionalist academic painters than Modernists and Impressionists. They're extremely vibes-forward.

There are few barriers to entry into these films-they will invite anyone in but the barriers to exit must be high and purifying. Films must also not be produced out of idle nervousness or boredom, or be used to recognise, emphasise, or amplify vulgarity. And in that context, I must say that I hate Disney's works. The barrier to both the entry and exit of Disney films is too low and too wide. 5 If you want to learn more about the making of Atamanoy's The Snow Queen, Animation Obsessive wrote a neat little article about it. It's a good overview, though I have to gently disagree with some of its conclusions about the irony of Miyazaki hating Disney and loving Snow Queen, which draws inspiration from Bambi. Feature film animation as we know it hadonly been around a few decades by 1957, and I find it specious, particularly as a comic artistand author, to see someone conflating an entire form with the character of its content, especially in the relative infancy of the form. But that's just one hot take. The rest of the essay is lovely.

6 - Miyazaki loves this movie. He blurbed it in a Japanese re-release of it in 2007.

7 - Julia Alekseyeva interprets Princess Mononoke as an iteration of Atamanov's The Snow Queen, arguing that San, the wolf princess, is Miyazaki's homage to Atamanoy's little robber girl character.
