RECO OF THE WEEK!
The Trouble with Flirting by Claire LaZebnik
Synopsis:
"Franny's supposed to be working this summer, not flirting. But you can't blame her when guys like Alex and Harry are around. . . .
Franny Pearson never dreamed she'd be attending the prestigious Mansfield Summer Theater Program. And she's not, exactly. She's working for her aunt, the resident costume designer. But sewing her fingers to the bone does give her an opportunity to spend time with her crush, Alex Braverman. If only he were as taken with the girl hemming his trousers as he is with his new leading lady.
When Harry Cartwright, a notorious flirt, shows more than a friendly interest in Franny, she figures it can't hurt to have a little fun. But as their breezy romance grows more complicated, can Franny keep pretending that Harry is just a carefree fling? And why is Alex suddenly giving her those deep, meaningful looks? In this charming tale of mixed messages and romantic near-misses, one thing is clear: Flirting might be more trouble than Franny ever expected."

Things that I wish had been properly explored in the final season of This Is Us, instead of focusing on Kate and Toby's endless fights, Kate becoming a saint who could do no wrong, Kevin being jealous over Madison's boyfriend, and Deja and Malik's teenage soap opera:
- Kevin experiencing some professional success, both in acting or with Big Three Homes, instead of having his acting career being written off and hearing secondhand about the nonprofit doing well
- Kevin and Madison successfully co-parenting with the six-year-old version of Madison and Nicky, because those kids were adorable. Also more of Kevin with the preteen kids.
- Sophie and Kevin being successfully married, and what their life was like as Kevin becomes more of a caretaker to both Rebecca and Miguel and his own brood
- Kevin, Madison, Sophie, Elijah, and all their kids becoming a sort of postmodern tribe that has to do everything together, apparently. The possibilities here are endless and we barely got a glimpse of them!
- Madison having another child with Elijah, how Kevin feels about that, and he and Sophie not having any children themselves
- Sophie hated LA. Why? Explaaaaaain, guys.
- Toby and his endgame wife and how she gets along with his family
- Toby experiencing some professional success. He gave up his dream for Kate and she got everything she wanted, and then they split up anyway. I think he deserved a bit more of what he wanted, too.
- Cassidy and Kevin's friendship, and how she got to a better place mentally
- Nicky and his adorable wife who we did not see nearly enough of
- More of Tess and Annie as adults. Some version of Annie should get a storyline.
- Toby and Kate as grandparents
- More of Adult Hailee
- Franny and Nicky as adults, since they are the only grandkids we did not see grown up
- Some explanation of how Jack kept Nicky a secret and what Nicky was doing after he came home.
- I'd like to see more of Rebecca and Jack in the afterlife, but what we got was actually perfect.
I know the season was structured the way it was in order to do the solo episodes and give Alexandra Breckenridge time to show up. But they didn't do nearly enough with Sophie once they had her, even though that's when Kevin's life got really interesting and they spent way too much time in the contemporary timeline. Kevin and Madison were fighting over where the twins spent Thanksgiving for about four episodes. Come on, guys. Speed it up!
Overall, I'm not unsatisfied about how things ended up, and obviously I loved Jack and Rebecca reuniting Titanic-style. But we could have had more.
Also, I had lots of issues with the show over the last two or three years....but I miss the Pearsons.

Well there we go
*********SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN “THIS IS US” EP12 OF THE LAST SEASON ***********
Kevin and Madison are not endgame.
Wow.  It’s been two hours and saying that out loud still upsets me.  Because, yes, I wanted it to be them.  If they were going to give Kevin a “Jack & Rebecca” love story, I was really rooting for it to be with Madison.  I was hoping that in this final season, Kevin would realize that love can look differently for him.  That it doesn’t have to be love at first sight (like it was for his entire family).  I wanted him to realize that love doesn’t have to flow in the traditional order that is #1 love, #2 marriage, and #3 kids.  I wanted Kevin’s love story to be original.  Messy.  Unexpected.  And his.  I wanted Kevin’s love story to be his.  And I really thought-- hell, I really believed it was going to be with Madison.
But it’s not.
And as sad as I am right now, I can live with it.  But if, and ONLY IF, he remains single.
Now I know that sounds crazy.  Kevin Pearson?  A single man for the rest of his life?  Yeah.  That’s exactly what I’m suggesting.  What I’m wanting.  It’s exactly what he needs.  He needs to be alone (at least for the next decade of his life).  If it’s not Madison, the only storyline I believe moving forward is for Kevin to truly make Nicky and Franny the loves of his life.  I need the writers to mean what they wrote when they had his character declare that fatherhood was going to be his love story.  Let’s go back to that.
And I’m not just saying that because I’m bitter about Madison.  (Okay maybe a little).  But I really truly mean it because it makes the most sense for his character.
Think about who Kevin Pearson has been from season 1 to season 6.  He’s always been chasing something.  Football, acting and success therein, Sophie, approval from peers and his parents, Sophie, a certain social status, forgiveness, alcohol, Sophie, and so many other things.  He’s also been running from responsibility, guilt and shame, his potential, his addictions, and failure.  He’s never really been content with what’s right in front of him.  Not until Madison came along and popped Nicky and Franny into his life...
I’m repeating myself at this point, but, if Madison isn’t his love story, can we please settle on it being Nicky and Franny.  The girl he brought to Kate and Phillip’s engagement party, and then later to the birthday party really offended me.  I would’ve believed those choices pre kids and pre Madison.  But after?  Absolutely not.  Those brief dating choices completely undid his character’s development faster than anything I’ve ever seen in my life.  That was a poor writing choice that I refuse to support or acknowledge.
Love in a romantic partner no longer needs to exist for Kevin.  He doesn’t need to chase after it anymore.  He has all the joy and happiness he needs right in front of him:’)

Jealous Kevin headcannon when he hears something about Madison dating from kate
HELL HATH NO FURY BUT A JEALOUS KEVIN
At first it started with flower deliveries to the house
Kevin's pretty oblivious about it all UNTIL the next delivery came with a basket of special goodies including books and lit things that got Madison all excited
Of course he thought it was for him from some studio exec or producer or something
But then it was addressed to Madison and he had to summon his full self-control not to flip out
They've just got into their co-parenting rhythm now too so he's a little shook about this new development
So, of course he goes to annoy Kate
Kate tells him that it's just some dude Madison used to work with who had just returned to L.A. for good
Kevin doesn't think he's "just some dude" but you got no rights to complain that your baby mama is a catch, Kevin Pearson!
Anywho, if puppy Kevin is needy, jealous Kevin is slightly rabid
Sometimes he'll pretend that he watered the flowers but he actually didn't
But then he'll feel really guilty if they die because he knows how much Madison loves flowers
So he does it anyway
He rants to the twins every time mama's out and asks them to report back everything they see
They only respond in burps
One time he hears Madison talking on the phone with someone who's making her laugh like cray
He asks her about it and she tells him straight up
She even apologises at all the deliveries made to the house and Kevin pretends that he's cool with it but inside he wants to use his stupid money to track this guy down and send him back to wherever he can't reach Madison
He's thinking siberia
Kevin was on the verge of sliding into Madison's Insta DMs "as a joke", he's that desperate
Kate tells him off for being weird about it when it's clearly nothing
But then she gets serious about her best friend deserving someone as wonderful and as amazing as her and I love you, brother, but what are you two even right now?
Just co-parents? Friends? Are you in a relationship? Because you act like you are but no one actually knows
Kevin doesn't think it'll affect him that much given how comfortable they are now but it shook him bad
Things get angsty later but when they bump into the guy during a grocery run, you can bet that Kevin was all over Madison
Nick and Franny are the best buffers and they're on dada's side too so they cry for mama on cue
Works like a charm and dudebro excuses himself so they can get on to biz and he promises to give Madison a call
To which Kevin goes, "We'll see!"
And proceeds to push Madison and the kids away

Does it ever make you sad that Jack Jr was likely the last grandchild that Rebecca Pearson was able to form any sort of relationship with, because Nicky Jr, Franny, and Hailey were born the next year, Rebecca moved across the country soon afterwards with Miguel and quickly began mentally deteriorating, and by the time they were in kindergarten she had trouble remembering names or what decade it was or which husband was still alive, and by the time Kevin moved back East with his family, she probably didn't know who the kids were?
Just thought I'd drop that into the feed.

He Loved Her
(A/N: post 6x14. I’m so happy and I’ve been waiting for this since I found out Kevin had a wife in season 1. anything else can happen in this is us, and I won’t mind because my two favs are endgame *SPOILERS FOR 6.14 OF THIS IS US*) Read also on ao3 or ff.net
He loved her.
If it was one thing Kevin Pearson knew in that very moment, it was that he loved Sophie Inman. The world could be on fire and he had the one bucket of water left, but he’d still use it to save Sophie. When Nicky cut his chin, Kevin could’ve called anyone. But he thought about Sophie, the still married Sophie, the nurse who fixed his heart over and over again no matter how many times he broke it; she was the one who filled his every thought even when he didn’t expect it.
The Valentine in his wallet was a sign that they were supposed to be together. A ‘yes’ at six years old, was enough to shape the future. Although no one could ever imagine how complicated their love story would be. No one would want to predict the heartache and the heartbreak that they’d endure over the next few decades. Except Kevin and Sophie took their own steps towards a brighter future for themselves, before they could find each other. Because the best love stories aren’t ones you can predict.
The first thing Kevin did after standing up, was search for his sister’s gaze. He did not want to ruin her big day, and would never forgive himself if she was upset. But he didn’t need to worry, because Kate’s smile was a mile wide as she met his gaze. She stepped forward to hug Sophie and Kevin heard her say, “Hi sister, again,” with a chuckle. Philip had wide eyes and it took Kevin a moment to remember that he wasn’t aware of all the history between him and Sophie. Sure, Kate had told him who Sophie was, but it wasn’t like they spent their evenings gossiping about Kevin’s ex-wife. Ex-wife that he was now going to be dating again. And he would probably marry her but properly this time. His kids would be the flower girl and ring bearer, his mom would hopefully still be able to come, and he would be surrounded by more love than Kevin thought he could ever feel.
Randall clapped Kevin on the back; Beth squeezed him tight and winked as she pulled away. Both Cassidy and Madison took turns flinging themselves into his arms and saying, “I’m so happy for you,” into his ear. Despite being a hugger, this time Elijah settled on a firm handshake and a knowing nod.
“When you know, you know,” he said, even though the comment sort of didn’t have a point because Kevin had known he loved Sophie since he was ten. He liked her at six, and fell in love four years later. But the words were kind, so Kevin just smiled at Elijah.
Miguel hadn’t known Sophie before, so he hugged her now for the first time. “It’s so nice to finally put a face to the name of the girl who’s hand Kevin’s heart tied up in knots for years.” Sophie ducked her head but she was happy. And Rebecca was herself enough to kiss both Kevin and Sophie’s cheeks, before stepping back and telling them she was glad they finally grew up. That caused a laugh.
Once everyone moved away to give some space, Kevin took Sophie’s hand and led her over to the twins. He crouched down in front of them and said, “Nicky, Franny, there’s someone really important I want you to meet.”
Both kids had been caught up in the previous excitement, but had zero clue what they were celebrating. Nicky was first to ask, “Is that your girlfriend, Daddy?”
Franny elbowed her brother and said, “No, that’s Cassidy!” She turned her gaze up to meet her father’s, questions written all over her face.
Kevin laughed and shook his head. “Cassidy’s not my girlfriend, Franny. She’s just my friend who’s a girl. But Nicky, you’re right; this is my girlfriend.” He looked at Sophie for confirmation, slight worry etching across his face. He knew that she loved him and he loved her, but did that make them automatically in a relationship?
“I’m Sophie,” Sophie said, crouching down beside Kevin. “I’ve heard so much about you both.”
Without missing a beat, Franny held out her hand like her mommy and daddy taught her, and smiled big. “Hi I’m Franny!”
“And I’m Nicky!” Not to be outdone by his younger sister, Nicky put his hand out too.
“It’s very nice to meet you both.” Sophie admired their outfits and charmed her future step kids, while Kevin straightened up and just watched them. Once he had left Sophie’s doorstep ten years ago after screwing up his second chance, Kevin never imagined he’d be with her now. Except true love always comes back, and clearly Kevin and Sophie had an unbreakable bond. Forever.
It was late when Kevin finally got back to his room, a second time in two nights with Sophie by his side. He jokingly threw her bra at him, the one she left last night, and she just shook her head with a laugh. There was no awkwardness, no nervous kisses or unsteady fingers undoing buttons. They had done this a hundred times and time played zero part. True to his promise to Sophie, Kevin didn’t look at her and remember the past. He looked at her and fell in love with all the steps she had taken to be in his arms today.
Kevin loved Sophie. He loved her now, he loved her back then; he’d love her always. Right before he fell asleep with Sophie’s warm body pressed against his, he thought, it took us 40 years, but we got it right in the end.
