I'm slowly rebuilding my tumblr presence since Twitter is currently burning, but I also refuse to leave the building until I know everyone else is going to get out safely. That being said, for those who haven't kept up with me there, I'm Ruby Ranger, I'm your gaming dad, I make video essays on retro first person shooters. Today I'm going deep into the History of Marathon, Bungie's underrated gem. We review, we reflect, and we really need to address why this game has stayed under the radar for so long. Let's dive in!

rating thawne's deaths on a 10 point scale
snapped neck: 6/10. ok. not good, not bad, well-deserved, timeless, impactful. i love the way thawne is still complaining about that one though.
flashpoint: 9/10. imagine becoming a living paradox and proceeding to rant about how your speedster nemesis cant hurt you now (very normal way to put it btw.) only to be pierced by a fucking sword. dumb and classic, all good here.
the button: 100/10 THE DUMBEST DEATH OF THEM ALL AND MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. also a classic, imagine being told multiple times that youre going to die and fucking carry on like youre the Smartest here and nothing could ever happen to you and actually ima adopt you barry. thawne's character at its finest.
running scared: 8/10. not bad. ironic last words and 'on my life i swear' about the promise he intended to break all along. once again, dead because he couldnt shut the fuck up and look around him. iris, my beautiful tired of thawne's shit queen, I STAN.
the flash cw season 1: 5/10. dont remember it much asides from being totally pointless as it has 0 effect on thawne's existence further and our beloved Genius of Time Travel, who can Calculate Every Single Timeline Consequence To His Actions revealing his fucking name to his ancestor and bullying him into murder by suicide.
legends of tomorrow season 2: 10/10. love this one. top 10 reverse-flash moments. my dude got together like 15 other versions of himself for each to do practically fucking nothing other than to group pose and die. an honorable mention: poor black flash who got called a monster just for trying to do his timeline protection job and who endured all of thawne's shit only for it to turn out completely pointless as well. then again if you think about it, everything that happens in cw is pointless.
the flash cw season 6: 2/10. does that even count as a death. makes zero fucking sense. 2 points only for thawne being a total loser and resembling negaduck's 'crisis on infinite darkwings' death.
suicude squad: hell to pay: 10/10. i gave this 10 points already just for his last words 'fuck my life'. again, DOESNT KNOW HOW TO SHUT THE FUCK UP WHICH GETS HIM KILLED. thawne believing in the afterlife in the first place feels out of character to me though.
finish line: 0/10. it was very hard to waste a character like that without even realising it AFTER WRITING HIM WITH SUCH A DEEP UNDERSTANDING BEFORE but you've done it, williamson ⭐
legends of tomorrow season 7: 7/10. very balanced death, little bit of thawne having zero fucking braincells, little bit of meaning. not even complaining about the concept, silly little domesticated rat doing his silly little job of preserving the timeline. i approve.
jurassic league: 10/10. first i suggest we just stop and think for a moment about the fact that we got a DINOSAUR THAWNE in a list of deaths. second THIS PREHISTORIC DUMPLING GOT FUCKING EATEN. third insert an extinction pun. perfect understanding of thawne being a fucking joke of a character and meme potential.
flashpoint beyond: 12/10. did NOTHING in the plot. meant NOTHING for the plot. just spawned as a corpse and looked pretty in the morgue (10 points already purely for The Page) and i respect that. 1 more point for the button encore and another to martha wayne. thank you for your service queen, we'll never forget your impact on this one.
knight terrors: the flash: 8/10. this mf lasted exactly 3 pages. neat but a bit sad if you think about it. not only got killed unprovokedly but his prescious museum he just tried to protect got damaged as well. didnt even get to finish neither the tour or his point about barry not being able to wake up (again, only tried to help in a way by that?). also i like the way he's once again a creation of barry's subconsciousness acting suspiciously fruity.

tumblr seems to be all good with the news of dd2 so far but i think a lot of the more hardcore ppl on reddit, discord, etc expected too much from this game, especially with ppl comparing it to the likes of elden ring (soulsbornes and their impact on the arpg genre is another can of worms for another time tbh) and bg3. from the get go, the devs made it clear that it's a personal passion project that doesn't NEED to try to reinvent the wheel but wants to stick to its personal philosophy as being a primarily fun love letter to old school rpgs including the wacky mechanics of long rests, limited fast travel, etc. than trying to break new industry standards or whatever? idk. obvs i haven't played the game and shit and my opinion is probs gonna change as is normal when playing vs speculating but some ppl set their expectations too high when nobody ever promised mind-bendingly novel mechanics lmao. the game isn't perfect but it never wanted to be anyway

Metroid Prime
The entirety of the Metroid series is covered in HG101 Digest 7: Metroid and Kid Icarus, please check it out!
Despite the widespread acclaim of Super Metroid, the series took a leave of absence during the Nintendo 64 era. Perhaps to make up for this, Nintendo planned for two brand new games to be released in late 2002, with a 3D one for the GameCube called Metroid Prime, developed by the Texas-based Retro Studios; and a 2D title for the Game Boy Advance called Metroid Fusion, developed in Japan. There was quite a bit of doubt over the 3D entry – Retro Studios had some staff from Iguana Entertainment, who had previously developed two of the Turok games for the Nintendo 64, but hadn’t released any games at all in their then-current incarnation. As first-person shooters like Halo were extremely popular at the time, there was also plenty of concern that the series would abandon its exploratory roots in favor of action. In the end, all fears were immediately allayed upon release where, curiously, the 3D Prime ended up being more faithful to the series’ roots than the 2D Fusion.

Random game review time! Name: The Baby in Yellow.
The real horror of this game is how fast it induced my motion sickness that I could only play for ~1 hour and 1.5 chapter before getting stuck in front of an elevator and couldn't push the button so the monster infant kept killing me.
I am now lying down trying not to retch.
AND! The game may be fake but the annoyance when this demon baby JUST WOULDN'T SIT DOWN AND STOP THROWING STUFF was very real. I felt so vindicated when I threw him down the chute.

I just finished: Metro Exodus!
Tumblr media
Compared to the previous Metro games, this one sure is a whole lot different, which isn't necessarily worse - but if you liked the previous games you won't necessarily like this.
Tumblr media
The game play is no way bad, though I didn't enjoy it as much as the other games - this is purely personal preference of course, as I enjoy Survival Horror style game play more. This one still has retains some elements of that, resource management is somewhat present, though it's more akin to a Fallout or Stalker game, instead of Resident Evil or F.E.A.R. Most of the horror themes have disappeared as well - whilst I'm not entirely sure if I would call the originals horror games, (if i need a single term I'd probably go for post-apocalyptic, the kind of thing I would think as being sterotypically Slavic) but they were certainly more so than this. Less fighting monsters, more fighting human 'survivors'. Most of the monsters you see are Zombies now, which I'm fairly sure weren't in the others, The game has a shockingly low number of mutants.
Tumblr media
Along with horror, the sci-fi parts have also taken a hit, I almost forgot playing through this that the other games were mostly about psychic neohumans? The concept feels so at odds with the new direction they took this one. You might wonder, if it's not horror, not sci-fi, what is this new direction? Well of course it's still very much working within the Post-apocalyptic genre, focusing on disputes between various groups with differing political outlooks, as the survivors fight to stay alive - Exodus, however, focuses a lot more on that second part than the previous games, fleshing out the various characters far more and actually making me remember their names, or at least the fact they existed at all.
Tumblr media
You have a small squad of characters that you stick with throughout the whole game, and each of them has at least something to distinguish them, even if it's fairly small (I'm pretty sure there's the staple one guy who likes food). I did find myself somewhat caring about them as the game went on, which is a huge change from the previous games where every character felt throwaway - I suppose part of this is a shift of the protagonist - Artyom's - perspective, previously no one in his life lasted long enough to get attached to, everyone almost immediately died or betrayed him -but now he has attained a stable social group, and a family. Speaking of which, Anna is the biggest change for the better, like many other games, now she and Arytom are married she has moved on from being the destined love interest, and she is allowed to be more of character in her own right.
Tumblr media
It might seem odd that I haven't talked about the shooting or anything in what is primarily an FPS, but the characters storytelling was what really stood out to me in this game. Yes, it is fun to modify your guns to suit your play style and sneak around quietly shooting everyone - the Tikhar (air gun) is particularly cool in this one, and is given a lot of attention - but the how much the story moved me was kind of a shock. I'm not sure if other's will agree - I can see how people would just see it as stiff, or maybe tropey, but it hit me in a way I can't quite explain. - I actually almost cried at the end, even though it didn't come as any surprise.
Grade: B
Significance: 2/3

I think Starfield would go up in fun drastically if it was 20% smaller than it is. New Atlantis is way too big, from a gameplay and performance viewpoint, and it's just full of nameless, braindead "Citizen" NPCs who do nothing but walk around. Bethesda games are good when they focus on quality over quantity, and 5 hours in, I'm just not quite getting that yet. Time will tell.

System Shock Remake
Developer: Nightdive Studios Publisher: Prime Matter Rrp: £34.99 (Gog.com, Humble, Steam and Epic) Released: 30th May 2023 Available on: Gog.com, Humble, Steam and Epic Played Using: Mouse and Keyboard Approximate game length: 20 hours
Before I start this review I have to mention that I backed this game on Kickstarter.
Way back in December of 2015 I reviewed System Shock 2. I've always felt wrong about reviewing that game and not the original but each time I tried to play it or the enhanced edition I found myself just too put off by the 'clunkyness' of the game. So I'm very pleased that this remake was made as it solves many of the issues I had with the original release. Of course, I understand that while this remake has been pretty faithful to the original the developers have made a few changes so its not 100% faithful.
The game is set on the Citadel Space Station in the year 2072. You play as 'The Hacker' (yes, that is the only name given) who awakes on the space station. The onboard AI, Shodan, has taken over and has been either eliminating or 'modifying' the residents of the space station. When you start a new game you get to individually select the difficulty of the combat, cyberspace, puzzles and missions. Once the difficulty is set you won't be able to change it.
Tumblr media
As you can see from the screenshots this game is a First Person Shooter, however unlike most FPS's this game has an inventory system that works like the attache case in the Resident Evil games. Everything you carry takes up space within your inventory meaning that you'll be playing inventory Tetris quite often.
Throughout the game are items that are junk (you'll know which items are junk as it'll have the word 'junk' in brackets next to the items name). These junk items can be 'vaporised' into scrap within your inventory taking up much less space and can be used to claim credits at recycling points. This system is where some of the clunkyness I mentioned before comes in. When you pick up junk items they take up a space (or several) within your inventory and you have to vaporise each type of junk individually by right clicking on it and selecting the vaporise option. As I'm sure you can imagine this can mean you spend much longer in the inventory when you could be wandering the ship. Oh, and the game doesn't pause when you're in the inventory so its not a good idea to do this unless you're sure you're safe. I should mention that vaporising system is totally optional, but the credits are very useful as they are used to purchase items from vending machines such as ammo, single use enhancements, health kits and even weapon modifications.
Tumblr media
There are no objective markers to be found nor even a quest log. This is both a strength and a failing as it doesn't clutter up the map or your HUD with markers or handhold you through the various missions. But it can mean that you may spend a lot of time trekking back and forth trying to work out what you're next objective is since there is nothing to directly tell you. However, if you find yourself in that position I recommend checking the map for any places that remain unexplored and going through the various audio logs and emails you collect as those can contain important clues.
Occasionally you'll have to enter cyberspace which plays similarly to an old game called Descent. In this mode you essentially control like a free floating camera and can roll like an aircraft.
Tumblr media
I loved playing System Shock 2 so it's been really nice to go back and play this version of the original predecessor. As I mentioned before, I have attempted to play the original or enhanced editions and just found it far too clunky to be enjoyable. This game mostly avoids that but newcomers may still feel a certain level of... age, especially when compared to more modern fare. I would ask that anyone who decides to give this game a go keep in mind that this is a remake of a game that predates and is a major influence upon many of the games that it shares a genre with (immersive sim) such as Prey, Bioshock and even Dishonored plus many more games that have taken inspiration from it and its sequel.
While I really like the games art style I will admit the rather 'busy' nature of it can make it easy for a player to miss a button or lever they need to interact with in order to progress. A feature I quite like is the shader that Nightdive have implemented to the graphics which gives all the textures a somewhat pixelated look, I know that some people aren't a fan of the effect but I think it really suits the over aesthetic of the game. It's also wonderful that the original voice actress of Shodan was able to retain her role, I was a little worried that they might try to recast which would be like recasting GlaDos.
Tumblr media
On the whole I'm pleased with this game and I'm very glad I backed it. I just hope that System Shock 3 is able to have a similar impact when that finally appears (though I have some doubts as the licence has gone from Otherside Entertainment to Tencent).
If this appeals to you perhaps try;
Prey System Shock 2 Bioshock

A Noob’s guide to Day of Infamy
This is Day of Infamy.
Tumblr media
*ding*
This 2017 game made and published by New World Interactive using the Source engine, is a game that I am sad about. Not because it is sad, but because it is an interesting gem. It’s like finding a brownie shaped like a piece of turd, but it is made with the most exquisite of fudge and chocolate. It is a good game, even with a few flaws (we’ll get to those, don’t worry). In fact, I dare say that this had to be both one of my favorite first person shooters and my favorite World War 2 games. So here is a quick introduction and tutorial of how to survive this game.
First thing to know is that Day of Infamy is a multiplayer tactical first-person shooter, set in the European theatre of the Second World War. With different game mods, with most of them being some variant of finding a point on the map, and politely telling the enemy already there, to shod off. This gentle persuasion is achieved with the liberal application of both high explosives, and small automatic firearms. The maps range from The beaches of Normandy in 1944, the Streets Salerno in 1943, all the way to Crete in 1941. With such a breadth of time (6 calendar years), and a vast swath of maps (mostly France, Italy, and one Greek map), factions are vast, at the number of 3. The different factions play on certain maps, so don’t expect to see Americans at Dunkirk. Each faction has unique weapons, and units. These units don't affect gameplay all that much admittedly, as it is mostly cosmetic, but they are still nice. You can earn them through leveling up, or alternatively, you can just buy them.
First is the Americans, because of course there is.
Tumblr media
With all the classic American WW2 weaponry, like M1 Garand, and Thompson, they will be familiar for many. As for units, once again, many of them will be familiar for those that dabble in WW2 history and/or media, such as the 101st Airborne, or the 1st Infantry Division (better known by the nickname “The Big Red One”). I also want to give a shout out, because I’m pretty sure that this is one of the only games that actually remembered that African Americans actually fought in WW2, in the form of including the 92nd Infantry Division, and the 761st Tank Battalion.
Next is everyone's favorite member of the second world war, the Wehrmacht (Germany).
Tumblr media
I say Wehrmacht, because the vast majority of their units are Wehrmacht, such as the 272nd Volksgrenadier Division, or the 29th Panzergrenadier Division. The only exception is the 17th Panzer division, who while listed as Wehrmacht, were historically Waffen SS, so now you guys know which unit not to get. Again, most of the weaponry will be familiar for those who play WW2 shooters, such as the MP40, and MG42.
The last faction are the British… or should I say Commonwealth.
Tumblr media
This is another reason why I like this game. You see, NWI remembered that the Brits in the second world war, had an empire, and they are willing to bring said empire into their scuffles. This means that while they do have British units like the famous/infamous Black Watch, they also have many units of Canada, such as the Princes’s Patricia’s Canadian Light infantry, as well as Australians (2/17th Battalion, who also happen to be my favorite) and Indians (12th Frontier Force Regiment). As for weaponry, most will be familiar… provided you are familiar with the British in WW2, such as the Bren, or the Lee-Enfield No. 4. They also have the one exception of where units do affect load out (we’ll get to that) with only the 2/17th Battalion being allowed to use the Owen Mk. 1.
Now that you have been familiarized with the factions, one must remember that as this is a team based game, it becomes like medieval Europe, where class matters. There are 9 classes, each with unique load outs, and purposes. Most of them also have limited slots.
Firstly, we have the basic class, the rifleman. The only class to not have a limit for slots, they are armed with a rifle. It should be noted that just because you are using a bolt action for the most part, you’re still deadly. With extra stamina, and access to rifle grenades, it is a very solid class.
Next is the assault class, who solves your issues at close range with the liberal application of an smg. Following that, is Support, who provides support by using a light machine gun, like a Bren or BAR. After that is the trifecta of basic shooter classes of Engineer (use explosives), Machinegunner (MOAR DAKKA!), and Sniper (one shot, one kill). Now the unique classes for the game starts now. After that, is Flamethrower, who decides that turning people into a barbeque is only a war crime the first time.
Now, here is the interesting part. You get one Officer, who has the ability to call support of any sort, from the innocent supply drop and smoke screens, to less innocent ones, such as artillery barrages, aerial strafings, and bombing runs. However, they can’t actually call these in, without a radio, which is accomplished with the last class, radioman. With a radio on their back, all they do is stand next to the officer, while they call in an artillery strike that will wipe the enemy team, and half of your team who were caught in the blast. (rule of thumb, you should always have both an officer and a radioman).
After choosing game mod, faction and units, and class, you have your loadout. Everyone has a primary weapon, secondary weapon, access of up to two different types of grenade, and a melee weapon. Furthermore, attachments to your weapon such as slings, bayonets, or scopes. Furthermore, you also have access to vests that can increase the amount of ammo you have. So what’s the catch? Well, weight is a factor, as in the more stuff you carry, the slower you are. Furthermore, your access to this is determined by supply points. You gain more supply points by playing the objective, so play. The. BLOODY. OBJECTIVE!!!
Anyway, items cost certain amounts of supply points, so this means you have to compromise about what you bring in. For example, if you play an American assault, an M3 Grease Gun with a sling, costs 5 supplies, while a Thompson M1A1 by itself costs 6 supplies. So, with this knowledge, prepare to compromise, especially with your first rounds.
After all that has been said, many of you might remember what I have said earlier about their flaws. Well, here they are. Map designs can be kind of poor, and lack of content update. They still support the game, but don’t hold your breath for new content that isn’t fan made (remember, this is the source engine. It’s super easy to mod… so I’ve been told), considering that the last update was back in December of 2017. This ties into the big elephant in the room… lack of players. Because of the lack of long term support, due to it being released just before another major NWI release, Sandstorm Insurgency (also a really good shooter), player counts can be pretty low. This is in spite of the fact that the vast majority of reviewers like the game. Many players often complain that the game is dead, but that isn’t quite the truth. A lot of the players for some reason seem to be on European servers. Of course, this is also the reason why I’m talking about this game.
So in summary, if you want to try a good team-based fps, or a good WWII game, I strongly recommend giving Day of Infamy a try. It comes cheaply too, being 15 USD for the base game, and 20 USD for the deluxe edition, and it can be cheaper during sales. Also, final note, this game also has amazing voice acting, of various types for the various American, German, and Commonwealth units, using a mixture of your typical fps voices, but also many witty, and genuinely funny lines (in that regards, shout out to the commonwealth voice actors, with my favorites being the Scottish and Australian voice) Many of these voices can be found on Youtube.
So take a dive into Day of Infamy, and this has been a Noob’s guide to Day of Infamy, which can be found on Steam. Enjoy the rest of your day.

THE BEST CONTROLLER THAT MONEY CAN BUY!!!!
I've been using the T4 Kaleid from Gamesir for a couple of weeks now and it has been one heck of a jump from the dual sense.
This thing comes with anti-stick drift analog sticks and tactile ABXY buttons that you can only dream of for a fraction of a price. Playing with 0 deadzone on Apex has been crazy and it feels like even switching to linear(from classic) has been a very easy learning curve in this controller. You do have macros and all that but thats not what I'm here for. The only downside is that its wired which is not a big problem for me and for the FPS community.
Oh the other thing is that you can overclock it to 1000hz in the t4k App along with all the RGB and other customizations that you can think and tweak of.
I got this for £35 when it was on sale, but now its only £41.99 on Amazon.

All of the negative reviews for LiS True Colors are just like...
"Too much drama!"
"Basically just a movie..."
"Too WOKE"
"Racist" [doesn't elaborate, reviewer probably racist themselves]
"I don't like it"
"It isn't this other game, so it's garbage"
"Too short" [in other words, you loved it and wanted it to keep going???]
[Insert smooth-brained comment about how empathy isn't a superpower]
"Not enough action or violence"
Very very few negative reviews I've been able to find had anything to do with any actual metric of game design - the pacing, the acting, the gameplay, the graphics - and the ones that are are just... completely unfounded. So many of these fucking negative reviews are from people who either didn't play the game, knew they didn't like this kind of game and played it anyway, or secretly DID enjoy it but didn't want to admit that the woke sjw liberal deep state devil worshipper propaganda [AN ACTUAL REVIEW I FOUND] made them cry.
If you think this is just going to be me complaining about confederates and nazis and conservatives and discrimination in general, keep reading.
Games like this give me hope. I mean, indie games are still far ahead of AAA games in terms of progressive messages, characters, and plotlines, but for a AAA game to have a story with a bisexual asian-american woman with ASD and anxiety coming out of the american foster care system is... kind of nuts, don'tcha think???
In spite of all of those padded negative reviews, this game STILL had over four stars in total. That's a big win, in my opinion. Hate is centered in weakness, and actions driven by love and joy and passion will always prevail over them. This game was one driven by love and joy and passion, and I highly recommend giving it a try.
That is, if you're not afraid of the woke sjw devil worshipper propaganda. 😈

Metroid Prime Hunters
Back in the late 1990s, the Nintendo 64 was the console to have for multiplayer first-person shooters. Much of this had to do with the four controller ports built into every system, as well as the presence of games like GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, and even a few lesser quality titles like Turok. Alas, Nintendo was never able to carry that momentum forward to the next generation on the GameCube, where its crown was quickly stolen by Microsoft’s Xbox and the immensely popular Halo. They tried again with Metroid, implementing a split-screen competitive multiplayer mode in Metroid Prime 2, but this failed to catch on.
Even though the GameCube generation ended up being a wash for competitive FPS games, the Nintendo DS was in the portable space where it didn’t have much competition. The Game Boy Advance had a few first-person shooters, like ports of Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, but these were mostly just novelties as opposed to games the audience took seriously. The DS meanwhile could handle 3D roughly on the level of the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, as well as wireless network transmissions, so it was more suitable for a multiplayer first-person shooter than its predecessor. And thus, Metroid Prime Hunters was born.
