Relic Space rebuilds civilization with missions on Linux
Tumblr media
Relic Space tactical space RPG game releases in Early Access on Linux and Windows PC. This is all due to the continuous work of developer Fourfold Games. Available on Steam Early Access with positive reviews. Fourfold Games’ Relic Space is a turn-based, roguelike RPG with 4X strategy elements. While players rebuild civilization following a galactic disaster. Doing so by finishing a wide range of missions for your faction. While taking on deeply simulated, hex-based combat as an elite starship pilot. Add in realistic movement rules (based on actual space physics) and hundreds of game changing ship upgrades. Then you have a recipe for endless hours of turn-based fun. Taking place in the year 2612, Relic Space features more than 40 distinct regions. Which players can explore while customizing and upgrading their very own ships. Beyond grid-based, tactical turn-based combat familiar to fans of typical roguelikes. Relic Space also features realistic damage (think BattleTech) with status effects for each of the items. Each weapon, engine, or utility item can catch fire, leak power, and generally be buffed and debuffed. Equipment items also affect the ship in unique ways. This includes manual changes for heat and energy levels.

In the Relic Space backstory, the galaxy as we know it lies in ruins. Doing so after a world ending event known as the Fall. Players take on the role of the legendary Omega – the elite pilot wing. Which is also the group of survivors known as the Order. The only way to rebuild civilization is to acquire and research “relics” of the advanced tech of the past. This is also now spread among the broken remains of planets and structures. At least those that make up the Relic Belts. During the Relic Space Early Access period, a rich, defining story is being added. Doing so via new handcrafted missions that will add to the wide range of procedurally generated missions. Those that are already in the game. There will also be regular additions of new player skills, research, equipment, and factions. Plus other game features create an ever more epic gameplay.
Key Features:
Tactical turn-based space combat: Use your tactical skills on a hex grid with fast-paced ‘one tile per turn’ mechanic. All taking insight from the roguelike genre. But Relic Space offers a fluid, modern feel.
Deep simulation: Real combat mechanics simulate damage to each ship feature. Each weapon, engine, or utility item can catch fire, leak power, and gain many more status effects. You will also need to manage heat, energy, and fuel levels. Doing so by making smart movement and equipment choices.
Non-linear exploration: Freely make your way through a procedurally generated solar system and their elements. There are also 4 main factions and 7 minor factions. So pursue research, trade, building projects, and other goals.
Flexible development: Use your growing fame and influence to acquire more powerful ships. Due to equip them with endless weapon and utility combo's in Relic Space. Gain new pilot abilities through a flexible skill tree. Research relics to unlock new powers and equipment.
Immersive setting: Uncover a rich, branching story full of endless procedurally generated stories. All in a detailed setting inspired by hard sci-fi.
Real space: Movement rules based on actual space physics: motion in a straight line is free But turning, starting, or stopping costs energy.
Relic Space tactical space RPG game is now available on Steam Early Access. Due to remaining in EA for "about a year." Priced at $16.19 USD / £13.49 / 15,74€ including the 10% discount until March 16th. Along with support for Linux and Windows PC.

Your thoughts on the xrd newcomer cast (Answer, Leo etc)? I personally like them a lot as my favourite batch of new playables.
I REALLY LIKE ALL OF THEM TBH. esp the valentines and raven (if that counts. first mainline fighting game debut. yknow) their designs are so appealing and fun to me. very much miss leo's huge fluff that's indiscernible from his hair. playing soooo hard into the lion motif it was fun. they're all so clearly lovingly crafted and it makes me :)

Nodux doesnt have psiioniics like a lot of other goldbloods do, instead he is gifted with VISION FOURFOLD. It allows him to see and react to things before they happen, which has crowned him Beforus's number one speedrunner of all time. His frame perfect accuracy allows him to do tricks and exploits thought only possible by computers. He's kind of a big deal in gamer communities, and is a controversial figure because people feel he has an unfair advantage over others or that he's just an total fraud (which he isnt.) Sadly, his abilities dont really benefit him in real life... and mastering a game still takes practice so its not like he can jump into one for the first time and breeze through it on the first try.

Okay so I saw that edit for the donnie brainwork au and I wanted to ask where you got the audio for Donnie speaking?
I am very proud of this edit, but I really want to wait for the next edition to the comic to come out before I add more to it.
I got it straight from the show (Episode Fourfold Trap). Simply took the audio and adjusted the volume so it could play with the song.
The fact that Raph immediately goes to stand like a video game character stuck in 2D is so amusing to me tbh-

Fuck it I'm gonna blab about another crossover fic i'm working on once i'm done with two souls
I dont care if it takes me years or if this fandom dies out (which it won't, tmnt is timeless)
But anyway.
It's called Pink Puppets, a crossover AU with a similar concept to Dagger From the Mirror (although i havent read it yet cuz i am scared)
It's going to ve reversed this time, with the Rise brothers being older because it's set after the movie and the 2012 boys remaining 15 years old (so kinda the same age as Mikey in the movie)
I was gonna use Draxum but i fell in love with the idiot so now I'm gonna use an antagonist that i had in plan for Two Souls season 3, that's why I was gonna write it after I finish Two Souls.
Basically that antagonist wants to replicate Draxum's warriors themselves, but don't want to go through the lengths to actually start doing it. They idolize Draxu and his beliefs and was angry that Draxum threw it all away to play family.
Kraang Subprime of 2012 gets involved and they discover there's countless of universes out there he can pull tirtles from.
He chose 2012.
It's season 3, a few days or a week from the fourfold trap (Karai escapes and is never seen again) episode and the bous are still about 15. This antagonist sees the brainworm in action and takes some for themselves, takong it home and modifying it before they snatch the brothers right in front of 12 April and 12 Casey.
They get dragged into Rise.
The brothers were imprisoned and one by one, a brainworm is forced into their brains. This is where the AU gets its name, the worms are pink and made the brothers' eyes pink.
The new modified brainworms aren't like Shredder's. It slowly influences the victim, making them the worse versions of themselves and think the antagonist is liek their parent or something, using their emotions against them.
12 Mikey is toxicly positive and brutal. He acts as if everything was just a game, he uses his kusagirama a lot, enjoying maling people bleed. He's dangerous and doesn't realize what he's doing is wrong. He's the new leader of the brainwashed gang, bossing his brothers around and they can't say no because of his little brother charm. He knows to emotionally manipulate people with his looks, which gives him a big advantage.
12 Donnie is a complete wreck. He's a ticking timebomb, he doesn't stop talking, doesn't mind his volume, doesn't care about his own wellbeing. He's destroying himself, he literally ignores his injuries if he gets one. 12 Mikey goes for a playful kill, toying with his victims while 12 Donnie always keeps them alive so he could experiment with them. He also uses his hidden blade a lot. He's twitchy and explodes very easily, making him a hard unpredictable opponent.
Then there's 12 Leo.
In this AU, you would expect his "bossiness" is gonna be the trait that gets amplified to be the worse, no, its his obedience. He's more like a puppet than his brothers. He's silent, completely silent, he never talks under the influence of the modified brainworm and follows every single order his brothers tell him to do. Unlike his brothers that would prolong death as much as possible, he strikes for the neck, immediately. He's basically the trump card, only used when things don't go as planned. He's hollow, emotionless, just a shell of his former self. Dead to the world and control by invisible strings.
What's funny is that despite the fact that their worse traits are amplified, they still love and care for each other. They're fiercely overprotective, they will stop the battle if one of them gets gravely injured, they'll take care of each others injuries.
That overprotectiveness is one of the reasons they still haven't got out of the worm's control, it was used against them.
And don't worry, i didn't forget about 12 Raph.
He escapes.
Remember that Raph centric AU i posted about? Yeah, this is it.
It was supposed to be 12 Mikey in thus position, but he's already got experience with dealing with his brothers turning evil, same goes for 12 Donnie, and maybe 12 Leo but he's the one that's evil, but not 12 Raph as far as I know.
12 Raph hasn't fought his brothers alone before.
Plus he already got a taste of the brainworm, why not fight back against his own fear of it?
So he runs away, stumbles upon the Rise turtles and pushes away his pride, beghing for them to help him save his brothers, and of course they do.
While the 2012 brothers cause chaos for the humans in New York with a subplot of trying to get 12 Raph to their side, the Rise brothers and their friends now have to deal with teens Mikey's age wanting murder and their brother who just wants them back.
This time, the Rise brothers have to be the responsibile older guys and the 12 boys the chaotic little shits.
(Don't worry, everyone is looking for them back in 2012)
Tell me ya'lls thoughts about it. Is it good??

what is thanatica?
what is the capital?
any ideas for how that experiment where daniil resurrected a woman went down?
anything that resonated with you in particular from the marble nest?
assuming the world goes on after the game ends, do you think daniil will leave the town? if so, to where?
any ideas for how the stamatins' earlier projects could have looked like?
any ideas for how farkhad's earlier projects could have looked like?
what does the key with no lock mean to peter and andrey?
what do you think is the purpose of farkhad's horizontal architecture?
any idea what will happen to them in the bachelor route?
first impression of farkhad?
recent impressions of farkhad?
first impression of the threefold bullet line?
recent impressions of the threefold bullet line?
pick a barnett newman painting for each of them
[the scariest question of them all] how would you describe their relationships... [including platonic / antagonistic / philosophers with benefits / etc.]

ok here are my opinions on some common patterns in conway’s game of life that i am always seeing pop up in my experiments
1. blinker
Tumblr media
i do not like these very much. they are distracting when i see them littered around a still life and if i have ash of some kind i want to fuck with i usually just put dots on either side to stabilize them into a tub so their movement will stop catching my eye
2. traffic light
Tumblr media
this is just an arrangement of blinkers so you can imagine my feelings. often a pattern will do something very pretty with fourfold symmetry but then just stabilize into one of these which is disappointing cause it’s the most boring constellation result you can get. i think traffic lights should be a less common result in this thing :/
3. honey farm
Tumblr media
not the most interesting but has its own aesthetic qualities, it looks like a decorative embroidery pattern, so i support it and i’m like omg hi it’s a honey farm when they show up. and the process to generate one, while modest and not as fancy as some other formations like the pi heptomino, is still really pretty and often provides a gorgeous bit of symmetry among the chaos (for an example of what it looks like go to https://playgameoflife.com/ and make a line exactly seven squares long and press start). she is like a simple homespun beauty to me
4. glider
Tumblr media
MY DEAR LITTLE FRIENDS. i just made a post about it but they are like animals to me. just look at it. just look at it! i’m so pleased that they are so commonly generated by random processes because they are so cute and my friends. when they pop up inside a bunch of stuff going on i am rooting for them to escape without any fatal collisions and continue to make their way into the great unknown. they are not the only spaceship (shape that moves itself across the grid indefinitely) but they are by far the simplest, most common, and above all the most endearing
5. pi heptomino
Tumblr media Tumblr media
UGH I LOVE YOU. YOUR INTRICATE SYMMETRICAL BEAUTY IS MATCHED ONLY BY HOW EASY IT IS TO RANDOMLY GENERATE YOU SO I AM OFTEN GREETED BY YOUR ICONIC FIRST FEW STAGES BEAUTIFULLY BLOSSOMING FROM WITHIN CHAOS. she’s everything she is the moment. every way she interacts with her surroundings is going to look good as well. we have no choice but to stan. there is a beautiful tragedy in the way she generates a copy of herself (you can see in the animation before it gets prematurely cut off) but that copy will eventually be destroyed by all the other stuff unless you hassle the exhaust with blocks. tragic. but lots of potential applications for spaceship building!
6. line of six spark
(i can’t find a good gif so here’s a link to the wiki with an animation of it) if you’re going to go out do it in style. nothing special, a modest little thing, but it’s fun and unique to look at. i always like to see one of these appearing in my soups
7. phi spark
(same as above) it’s a lot like the line of six spark but twice as awesome because it REMINDS ME OF MY DEAR FRIEND TAKUMI :D and the distinctive ɸ shape is just so visually pleasing to suddenly see for an instant
8. r pentomino
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kinda mixed feelings. on the one hand, her absolute slay in taking over a THOUSAND generations to stabilize (this gif is only a brief snapshot) after coming from that one little shape. on the other hand, i’m too impatient to wait that long. also i resent her taking the title of most commonly occurring methuselah (pattern that originates from a small seed but lasts a long time before stabilizing) from my lovely girlfriend the pi heptomino. also she’s not symmetrical so it’s not as nice to look at :/ which also means i can’t actually recognize any of these supposed common occurrences because there aren’t distinctive patterns for me to notice. oh well. nothing personal
9. toad
Tumblr media
not huge on my radar compared to some of these others but the name makes it so cute, the way it looks is a lot more interesting despite its simplicity than my enemy the blinker, and it’s not as common a result so i when i get it i’m like omg it’s a toad :D also i hear they’re very useful in lots of spaceships and machines and stuff
ok that concludes my post about my thoughts on some common naturally occurring patterns from conway’s game of life that i am always seeing in my random soups. next i might do a post on some patterns that don’t occur naturally so much and that you have to manually input to see happen. if you actually read this far congratulations and thank you

and let me be 100% about what i write in french: i spend my ages 11 to 13 copy and pasting english fics into google translate (we did not even have deepL then. it was the trenches.) to read them. i will never be mad at anyone who doesn't speak my language for just plopping my shit into google translate to get the gist of it. will a lot be lost in translation? yes. will the rhythms the rhyming and some general images be lost? YES. but you can always come back to it later. when you have more #knowledge. go forth and read stuff that's how you learn. that's how i learned a lot of vocabulary.

Delving into the Anticipated File Size of GTA 6
As Rockstar Games maintains silence on the official file size for GTA 6, various clues emerge, offering a glimpse into the sheer magnitude of the impending game.
There's little doubt that GTA 6 is gearing up to be one of the largest gaming phenomena in history, capturing widespread anticipation and promising an expansive virtual world. With Grand Theft Auto 5 gracing screens in 2013, it's reasonable to surmise that GTA 6, likely in development for over a decade, is poised to deliver a monumental gaming experience.
While the exact file size remains undisclosed, early estimates project it could reach a substantial 200 GB. In 2022, a Reddit user named Denso95 meticulously analyzed a leaked developer build of GTA 6, approximating its size at around 80 GB and speculating a final release size just under 200 GB. This aligns with the observed patterns in previous GTA releases.
Tumblr media
While current size estimates are speculative, an official revelation is expected when GTA 6 becomes available for digital pre-order, likely later this year on the PlayStation and Xbox stores.
Reflecting on Historical Game Sizes
A retrospective examination of recent Rockstar Games releases and their respective file sizes provides valuable insights into the potential scale of GTA 6:
Red Dead Redemption 2: 120 GB GTA 5: 111.37 GB GTA 4 Complete Edition: 32 GB GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition: 19 GB *(Sizes may vary between platforms or due to game updates)
Tumblr media
The transition from GTA 4 to GTA 5 witnessed a significant quadrupling of the file size, underscoring Rockstar's dedication to delivering increasingly immersive gaming experiences. While a fourfold increase to 400 GB appears improbable for GTA 6, a notably larger storage requirement is expected. This anticipation stems from the apparent doubling of the playable area compared to GTA 5 and the rumored inclusion of more building interiors, as hinted by the 2022 leaks.
Addressing Unverified Rumors
Contrary to an unverified rumor positing a colossal 750 GB file size for GTA 6, such claims lack substantive evidence. If true, this purported file size would render the game unplayable on day-one PS5 consoles, which provide only 667 GB of usable storage out of their 825 GB total.
Comparing GTA 6 to other expansive games like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare/Black Ops Cold War, and Ark: Survival Evolved, it appears unlikely that GTA 6 would exceed expectations and reach a file size of 750 GB. While GTA 6 is expected to be substantial, a more 'acceptable' file size of 300 GB might be a reasonable expectation if Rockstar Games deems additional space necessary for the game's expansive content.

okay a while ago my buddy over at @6-2-aestheticsofhate asked me about a character from my absolute favourite game, ffxiv, because he saw them compared or associated with gabriel a couple of times, that being this guy
Tumblr media
who is also all of these guys at some point
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but we're gonna talk about this one
Tumblr media
or more specificly his theme song because, I'll be honest, I personally don't see any deeper similiarities between Elidibus and Gabriel beyond "Guy that is burderend by the wheight of duty to the point it breaks him who also is angel themed" BUT I feel like you can apply Elidibus theme song, more specificly the song from when he fights you as the warrior of light, to Gabriel.
I'll admit I don't have a gabriel reading for every line and passage in this song but I'll try my best to put it into words down below.
Cursive will be the song lyrics which I yoinked from here, normal text is how I think you could read it for Gabriel.
youtube
[Intro] One brings shadow, one brings the light Two toned echoes, tumbling through time Three score wasted, ten cast aside Fourfold knowing, no end in sight
This is extremely specific to the plot of ffxiv so, for every future time this shows up: no gabriel reading here
[Verse 1] All our splendor bathed black in silence Our surrender, a somber reverie Slowly drifting down into twilight Left to sifting through fading memories Know our places, for worth is wordless Evanescent, this writing on the wall Brother, stay this descent to madness Come and save us, catch us before we fall
okay so in ffxiv this verse is about how elidibus essentially went mad to the point it broke him in the pursuit of fulfilling his duty and his peoples hopes and expetations of him, to save them all and to return their beautiful world to how it once was and I think you can directly apply this ti gabriel too. The glory of the things they once fought for is gone, forgotten, nothing but memories, and they crave to return it, be it for themselves or for the expectations put onto them by others.
[Refrain] Riding home - riding home Finding hope - don't lose hope
[Pre-Chorus 1] Like broken angels, wingless, cast from heaven's gates (Our slumbering demons awake) We only fly when falling, falling far from grace (Hell take us, heaven can wait) And like a message in a bottle cast to sea (Disgrace, untold and unseen) Quick to their ends, our candles burn, until we're free
okay this one should be the most obvious one, gabriel literally fell from grace in the eyes of the council and yet it was the only time we actually saw him soar in the story of the game, when he took back power and struck them down for being on the wrong path, esentially making himself a kin-slayer.
A message in a bottle is something lonely and desperate noone knows where it will end up and if someone will find it and, even then, if someone will open it. Just like gabriels path in his attempt to make things right again is uncertain and desperate and he doesn'T know if others will be willing to listen and join his effort, even when they take notice of them.
A candle burnign quickyl to it's end is pretty much a metaphor for both life itself and running out of time and energy, there is only so much one can do before it breaks them, at which point they are set free either through achieving their goal, by failing and giving up, or death itself.
[Chorus] In monochrome melodies, our tears are painted in red (Bleeding to the edge) Deep inside, we're nothing more than scions and sinners In the rain, do light and darkness fade!
again this is very game specific sooo ye idk
except for the bleeding to the edge part because we all know what it means to go off the edge. A downfall.
Yes, time circles endlessly, the hands of fate trained ahead (Pointing to the edge) All things change - drawn to the flame, to rise from the ashes To begin, we first must see the end!
things move on and change is unavoidable, same as the downfall of what once was, but from the rubble of the fallen new things can grow. There is potential still for heaven to fix things.
[Interlude] One brings shadow, one brings the light Two toned echoes, tumbling through time Three score wasted, ten cast aside Fourfold knowing, no end in sight
One brings shadow, one brings the light Two toned echoes, tumbling through time Three score wasted, ten cast aside Fourfold knowing, no end in sight
see note from the beginning.
[Verse 2] Rock of ages,we cast the first stone In our cages, we know not what we do Indecision, here at the crossroads Recognition, tomorrow's come too soon
This is more applyable to heaven as an insititution. They cast the first stone by straying from the lords true path, either blind or willingly ignorant to what they were doing, lost, and in a panic over a change they honestly could have seen coming.
Like seriously god created mankind in his image and we all know the clichee of fathers leaving their kids behind.
Follow blindly, like lambs to slaughter At the mercy of those who ply the sword As our song wends, dead underwater We're forgotten, for now and evermore
Again, this could be applied to heaven, but I feel this fits the souls of hell more actually, since they have been mostly left behind by heaven to rot in hell and when V1 comes tumbeling in there and starts a literal bloodbath Gabriel is the only one who comes down to check, because it is his literal job as judge of hell, and a hanfull of virtues.
They, and hell itself, are part of gods creation which the angels swore to protect and cherish and yet they choose to ignore the happenings down below because they are sinners and unpure.
[Refrain] Riding home - riding home Finding hope - don't lose hope
[Pre-Chorus 2] Without a compass wand'ring lost in lies of faith (Faith slowly wasting away) Only alive in fighting Death's amber embrace (Our hearts beat loud, unafraid) On Hands and knees we pray to gods we've never seen (Come shadow, come follow me) The final hour upon us, no more time to breathe
this is for both gabriel and the inhabitants of hell. Their faith is fading after god abandoned them.
Without the word of god to uphold and his mercy to earn they have nothing left to fight and live for except survival. Most of the people cat to hell probably never even had a single one of their prayers heard in life, thus a god they have never seen, and now they are supposed to prey and beg him for mercy.
With the machine murdrering it's way through hell, and not even gabriel being able to stop it, their final death is switfly aproaching. They are suffocated by the ever looming dread and the knowledge that noone, not even god himself, cares.
[Chorus] In monochrome melodies, our tears are painted in red (Bleeding to the edge) Deep inside, we're nothing more than scions and sinners In the rain, do light and darkness fade!
Yes, time circles endlessly, the hands of fate trained ahead (Pointing to the edge) All things change - drawn to the flame, to rise from the ashes To begin, we first must see the end!

To Be Favoured By The World
[Last Life Lizzie is really fun to me sorryyyy ^-^]
———
And the world saw that she would need lives, and so the world gave her many. And so the world saw her gamble one away, and returned the favour back to her fourfold.
And so, in her power, she was kind, and gave a life - the most valuable gift, in a world where they are limited - and gained, in turn, the heart and hand of the Hound.
And then again, she does it - giving more, now - and trades two lives for the gift of magic. Magic to protect, or to harm, or to keep, or to be efficient. All of it, twirling in the palm of her hand.
The world watches her with a sad eye, for she has given away the gift they offered her. She was not made to last long in this world. She is not the type. Too kind, too trusting, too clumsy, too easy to distract. These characteristics are fawned upon, in other worlds, but not here. Not where the only thing to keep you alive is your own sword and your own shield, and your own eyes to watch your own back.
The world gave her what she would need, to last longer. They gave her life, after life, after life.
And she gave one away (too kind), then another two (too trusting), then to a trap (too clumsy), then to a surprise of a fight (too easy to distract).
The world watches her, and for a moment, it weeps. A single tear, for the shadow queen, then it is gone.
Just as she is.
The world shakes their head, disappointed, and decides that perhaps she is not fit for this world. Even with their careful help. They will not bring her back next time.
She stands at the end of time, watching the rest of the game unfold around her, and the world cups their hands around her.
She is favoured by the world. As it holds her close, she weeps, for being loved by Them is the loneliest thing she has felt since entering the game.

Don’t be Attached to the Results...
Once upon a time, fifteen years ago to be precise, I stepped into the rehearsal room of a company called Improbable.  I was nervous, but Phelim McDermott, one of the Artistic Directors, told me that I only had to do four things. They were:
1) To turn up.
2) To pay attention.
3) To tell the truth.
4) To be open to the outcome - i.e not to be attached to the results.
That was it.
During rehearsals, that’s all I had to do.
Also in life, apparently, that’s all I had to do.
Reader, I married him. Phelim that is. And had two children with him.
Be open to the outcome…..
Becoming a wife and a mother was the result of that Improbable show - a happy outcome. But that fourth instruction is still the one I find the hardest to follow.
The instructions aren’t actually Phelim’s. They’re from Angeles Arrien’s work, The Fourfold Way, which draws on the Native American medicine wheel. I feel fairly confident about the first three - not that they aren’t challenging, ongoing practices, but that I have a sense of what each requires of me - how to be present, how to listen deeply, how to speak what’s true without judgement. But that fourth one? Not being attached to the results? Right now, in both my mothering and my making, this feels tough. My son is ten, about to leave his current school and start a new chapter of his life. Meanwhile, my novel is being prepared for publication. After a decade of harbouring both - a boy and a book - I am looking outwards with them, taking stock, focussing on the results, and I know I am attached to how they go - how can I not be?
First, to illustrate, let me tell you a story about the boy:
My son is autistic. He loves Dungeons and Dragons, and fantasy video games.
Tumblr media
‘Warriors of Destiny’ by Riddley McDermott
He has been saving up to buy a Virtual Reality headset. Last week he bought it, but when we got it home, it turned out he needed a camera to go with it - the man in the shop had failed to tell him this. My son decided to return the headset and get his money back. He wanted to complain - complaining in public is something of a speciality of his. So off we went, back to CeX.
When my son was four or five his ability to go up to the lady behind the desk at Kew Gardens and let her know how deeply unhappy he was that the children’s play area was closed, was challenging, eccentric and kind of cute. As we went into CeX, I felt the increased pressure of his increased years - a different age, a different set of expectations. To cut a long speech short, my son did fine. I did not. He went up to the counter and launched in, gesticulating wildly, looking more at his own furious reflection in the perspex screen, still up from pandemic days, than at the non-plussed shop assistant stood behind it. But I felt panicked as I watched him, watching himself, being watched. I wanted to explain his behaviour, to mediate, apologise - I even tried to do so, at which my son waved me away. In that moment, part of me felt ashamed of him, of how he is, and then even more ashamed of myself for this. In that moment, I felt caught - attached to the results, anxious about how my son is turning out.
Afterwards, I did not want to read my pc parenting books, extolling the virtues of unconditional love (I have a shelf of them). I wanted some gruesome myths, scary fairy tales - the ones in which parents are horrible: disappointed or critical, competitive or jealous, the ones in which the mother gazes at the mirror to check who is the fairest and the best. And I wanted, too, the stories about monstrous children, about mothers who give birth to minotaurs, or pigs, or Cyclopes. I wanted these stories because they made me feel less alone, helped me know that - yes, this too is the territory of parenthood. The dark, difficult and, at times traumatic territory of expectations, of wanting certain results, for our children, for ourselves, which feels taboo because I have been raised and want to raise my children under the flag of freedom, of loving them exactly for who they are, openly, always.
Meanwhile, parallel to the story of the boy, is the story of the book:
Because when I came back from CeX, hungry for horrible myths, I found an email waiting in my inbox asking me to fill in ‘an author questionnaire’ about my novel, which, as it happens, is also a story of parenthood, based on a myth. The questionnaire came from the marketing department of the publisher, and it included questions like: ‘What inspired you to write this book?’ And ‘Are there any personal experiences which informed the work, about which you would be willing to talk?’ I dutifully typed my answers into my laptop but as I did so, a strange feeling stole over me. Because however accurate I tried to be, however much I tried to tell the truth of how and why I wrote the book, I could sense my meanings being changed by the context. I was having to tell everything backwards, as if I had always been working towards this point, when actually the whole blundering ten-year experience of writing it has been surprising, messy and difficult. But the effect was impossible to escape, like some fairy tale transformation of mud to gold, frog to prince, whatever I wrote, it felt glorified, solidified, because it was in support of the publication, the grand outcome - the result on which it all hangs, to which I am so fiercely attached.
So, there we have it.
Two very different moments: one in CeX with my son, trying to take his headset back, the other involving me, with my author questionnaire, trying to help sell my book, but in both instances, I felt hot and bothered about the outcome.
An outcome is often just that, I realise, a moment of coming out, of turning outwards. Both the complaint, and the questionnaire, involved a transition across a threshold, from a private place to a moment of contact with the outside world. And what occurs in that transition feels almost like a chemical reaction. Like a pot being put into the oven to be fired, or conversely, like a red-hot metal spoon being plunged into cold water to be set- it’s the moment when things harden. And the hardening is both an act of protection, something which maintains the shape of the object, keeps it intact, and an act of presentation, of pride, something which enables it to be put on display, seen, admired. And it’s inevitable - this moment of things hardening.
I go back to the advice I received in that Improbable rehearsal room - the instruction was not to avoid the result. It wasn’t even, “Don’t care about the result.” The advice was only not to be attached to what it is. Not to fix beforehand on what or how it should be.
But there is always a fixing, a firing, a hardening - that’s what I felt, in the shop, in front of my laptop, a fixing, which was the result itself coming into form. And I think this is what has confused me. The hardening is necessary, unavoidable. But what we can do, perhaps, is not to fixate on the fixing, not to harden around the hardening, but somehow to remain fluid, able to move, even as things set.
One more story, about the boy:
He has only three days of school left now. Last Friday I was invited, along with other parents, to come in and watch his class sing some songs, recite poems, and play recorder music - an end of term presentation. While the rest of the class obediently sang, recited, played, my son stood among them, saying nothing, grinning, but every now and then pulling crazy faces, or making dramatic gestures, some of which related to the words and music being shared, and some of which did not.
I watched him, entertaining himself, wanting to entertain us, managing the situation in his own way, and on this occasion, I didn’t want him to be any different to who he was, is. But I was acutely aware of how he looked to the outside world, of how the outside of him appeared- a weird, disruptive child, with special educational needs. And as I listened to the recorder music that my son wasn’t playing, I was surprised to find myself crying. I wasn’t disappointed. I didn’t want him to be joining in. I was crying because I had understood something: I reached for my bag, found a stubby pencil and the back of a receipt and wrote down this:
There’s always an inside story.
Even or especially at the outcome stage, even whilst everything around you is hardening into results, there is always an inside story. Not like a journalist relays it. Not an exclusive news story. Something much more subtle and secret. A soft, unfolding, slippery, weird, disruptive thing.
This thought helps me, at last, fifteen years later, understand how I might remain open to the outcome, unattached to the results. I believe it has to do with attending to the inside story, as the results come out. And I think it is a practice that will send me round again to the beginning, back to step one, to simply showing up, to listening, to telling the truth. It’s like that fourth instruction is nothing more or less than an arrow which points back to the start. It feels like a children’s game of Grandmother’s Footsteps. You stand on the starting line, you pay attention to the Grandmother’s back, you creep forwards. And then, when she turns round you have to freeze. This is the moment you are seen, judged. You go statue-still, fix your position - it’s part of the game. But an equally intrinsic part of the game is the wobbling, breathing, teetering that happens inside the moment of fixing. Grandmother sees this:  “You’re moving!” she says- and sends you back to the start. And that’s not a failure. It’s the only result that matters - that you are staying in the game, beginning again. Turning up. Listening. Being true. Taking another tiptoe step.
And on it goes.
I want to try to remember this as I go through the next year, of publishing my book, of home educating my son (which will actually involve going out of the home with him into new environments, having new encounters). Because I know there can be so much pain in the hardening. The stories surrounding the results - who my son should be, how I want my book to be received - are powerful. It is so easy to become set in stone, a hard reflection in the glass, the fairest and most miserable of them all, hardened against my children, my work, myself. It is so easy to forget the inside story.
But the results are never more than a fired pot, a cooled spoon- one outcome, outline, the cast of one moment in time – nothing to which I need attach. They can be sloughed, like a snake’s skin, and left behind. Meanwhile, the inside story is always there - soft, flexible, alive - it wants to slide away, showing up where it can, listening, telling you, me, the children, its wise, true, slippery tale. Once upon a time…..
So here are your questions for the month:
Can you name a moment when you have been fixed on the results?
For yourself? For your children? For your work?
And then can you name, in each instance, what the inside story was?
What was the slippery thing, that was waiting to show up, and tell its tale?
P.s. And now, as I write, it is my son’s last day, and yesterday he went for a walk with his class and they found a frog, which they called Amber - I was wondering what image might go with this blog and here she is - the slippery inside story herself, better than any prince.

In Ralphs, Donnie’s, and Mikey’s dream are the 2012!Turtles fears… Got confused for a moment with Mikey’s until the waiting for months part. Imagine 15 months away from your brothers until it was revealed you were gone for seconds for them.
Which also brings me a thought. Will the 2012!Turtles have this dream? Like in one simultaneously night, they just got this random horrific nightmare because the Rise!Turtles are experiencing it.
-🦑
The dreams are mostly inspired by the idea that your dreams are your alternate universe's self. (MCU, ya know)
All the dream sequences (except for Leo's) happened loosely based on plots of certain episodes i think hit the 2012 boys hard and as well as contributing to their fears throughout the seasons.
Raph's dream sequence is cockroaches at first because 2012 Raph has a fear of insects, it got amplified when they had to fight of an insect alien that is Lord Dregg in season 4. The dream set place in Lord Dregg's planet. The whole scorpion stab thing is an actual scene, instead of Rise Leo its 2012's Mona Lisa that got stabbed in the back (she's fine don't worry). The whole dream represents 2012 Raph's fear of losing control as well as the fear of losing the people he loves.
Donnie's Dream sequence is 2012 Donnie's experience with the Mind Boggler trap in the 2012 episode "Fourfold Trap" where a brainwormed 2012 Karai captured the turtles. In there, he had to work under pressure as he plays the game, one mistake and he gets electricuted. 2012 Donnie does not work underpressure well, unlike Rise Donnie, who was put in that situation. Overall it represents 2012 Donnie's fear of failure and how he hates the feeling of being weak and a burden.
Then we have Mikey's dream sequence, which is calmer than the other two, but a scary experience nonetheless. Its 2012 Mikey's time in Dimension X. It is said that the dimension may have a sort of time warping (?). Time can either be slow or fast and 2012 Mikey went through the portal to find his friend Leatherhead and stayed there for months before his brothers, who came in seconds before him, went in. Its been months for him, seconds for them. Rise Mikey didn't deal well with this unlike 2012 Mikey did (let's face it, Rise Mikey would not want to eat that weird green goo worm vomit thing). It represents 2012 Mikey's fear of being alone
Lastly Leo's dream sequence...
Well, he doesn't really have a counterpart to grab dreams from anymore, now, can he?
The 2012 boys had this dream at the same time, but of course, it's them in it, not the Rise boys
