What are your thoughts on government intervention to end labor disputes in general? On one hand, forced settlements almost always favour management, and if management knows that the government will intervene, they have an incentive to stall negotiations and run out the clock, so to speak. On the other hand, some shutdowns will have far reaching negative effects on society as a whole, particularly if the strike involves the public service or things like railroads or ports.
In terms of my take on government intervention to end labor disputes, I'm fully in favor of procedural hypocrisy (or, as a philosophy PhD might put it, consequentialism) because the only question that really matters is whose side the government is intervening on behalf of. (This is where I'm going to make a massive plug on behalf of my colleague Erik Loomis' book A History of America in Ten Strikes, and in particular recommend his chapters on the Anthracite Coal Strike of 1902 and the Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1937.)
Tumblr media
As a labor historian, I would say that as a rule, the state almost always intervenes in labor disputes at some level, whether it's the local cops and local government, the state militia, the U.S Army, or the courts. For most of labor history, the state has intervened on behalf of capital, and was broadly succesful in using its police power to crush strikes and keep the trade union movement economically marginal.
Where the union movement has been most successful is not when the state is neutral (because capital versus labor is not historically a fair fight between opponents of equal weight), but when the state intevenes on behalf of labor. So yeah, government intervention in labor disputes is awesome - when it's Governor Frank Murphy sending in the National Guard to keep the cops and the strikebreakers out of the plants in the Flint Strike, or the "Madden Board" NLRB enforcing the Wagner Act through the work of the Economic Division and the Review Division, or the National War Labor Board ordering Little Steel to recognize SWOC and agree to the union's terms.
Specifically on the issue of forced settlements, whether they're a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely on whose terms the settlement is made, which in turn depends on how labor law is written and enforced (and staffed). The whole reason why the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947 mandates that "neither party shall be under any duty to accept, in whole or in part, any proposal of settlement made by the [Federal Mediation] Service" is because one of capital's biggest grievances against the "Madden Board" NLRB was that the Board's orders and settlement proposals had systematically favored workers between 1935-1947.
Tumblr media
I think the numbers tell the tale - when the state was at its most "neutral" at the turn of the 20th century, union density hit a ceiling of 10% of the workforce. The only time that the labor movement broke through that ceiling was during WWI and then the New Deal, when the state shifted to supporting unions. And then when the state began to shift back in the direction of capital and labor law increasingly favored management, the union movement began to shrink.
This is why I always tell my students that the state is like a great stationary engine, and the only thing that changes is where that engine's power is being sent to. If you refuse to engage in electoral politics and only rely on direct action, the engine doesn't go away - it just gets harnessed by the other side and the power is used against you.

“Israel is acting according to international law”
was this after or before they dropped phosphorus on Gaza?🤨
Or turned off all the water and stopped food from going in?
“The idf is the most moral army in the world and isn’t trying to kill people”
so bombing civilians, stealing their belongings and stealing a child is moral?

Big day tomorrow for Palestine at the UNGA
The United Nations General Assembly could vote on Friday on a draft resolution that would recognize the Palestinians as qualified to become a full U.N. member and recommend that the U.N. Security Council "reconsider the matter favorably." It would effectively act as a global survey of how much support the Palestinians have for their bid
https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/palestinians-seek-un-general-assembly-backing-full-membership-2024-05-07/
It's the only reasonable way towards a two-state solution and to correct historical mistakes.

love seeing goyische Takes™ about israel that conveniently and unsubtly ignore that the modern state of israel was founded in the wake of the holocaust
like, was european (and later american) states’ support of zionism an explicitly colonial project? yes. did european jews in the wake of the holocaust (and frankly before it) have a VERY GOOD REASON to want to have a nation-state controlled by jews? also yes. does that excuse the colonial way in which the nation of israel was founded and its national status enforced? no. is israel the only state involved and the only government at fault? also no.

we just played a session of our campaign which was like the first HUGE arc finale, and I can only summarise it by saying that nemja's evil ex survived being barbequed by the most powerful magic source in the world because we teleported him away with us, 3 characters got powers / memories back that they didn't have access to since the start of the campaign and nemja's kids (yeah he stole some kids) very likely died a really horrible and cruel and undeserving death and none of these things are on the top 10 of Insane Things That Happened This Session

Idk man I think a guy can do some shitty things for the people he holds as family and ultimately personal selfish reasons that make him slowly chip away at the truly good parts in him and strip him of his morality and humanity until he is nothing more than a tyrant have all of that set back to square one where he still has a conscience but has still done really shitty things and then upon finding out the monster he could be gives up the quest for ultimate power even if he thinks it's a GOOD thing for everyone, coming to find out what he thinks is good for other is not what they need OR want and ultimate try to become a better person at all costs and retain that bit of kindness that hes had all along and recognize hes an extremly selfish person with massive flaws and even if he keeps falling into his sins he perserserveres and tries as hard as possible to help the ones he loves in the way they need help instead of what father knows best and almost lay down his life to protect a place that he has treated so wrong and that MAYBE he shouldn't be executed for the future crimes that don't even exist in this timeline and that this dude and the evil version of himself are now so far removed from eachother but he should seriously face some conciquences for the crimes he has already committed but maybe straight up killing Daddydorf is fucking wrong ANYWAYS

‘A chance to implement forced displacement’: Israeli settlers are attacking Palestinians in the West Bank
“Settler violence in the West Bank has been increasing for months, but Palestinians interviewed by Novara Media reported a marked escalation since 7 October. While international attention has been on Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, at least 64 Palestinians – several of them children – have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank, and hundreds more have been wounded.
“Palestinians living in the West Bank said they believe settlers are using the ongoing crisis in Gaza as an opportunity to accelerate their goal of ethnic cleansing. They described settlers breaking into properties, bulldozing homes and water wells, cutting off electricity and burning tents with greater frequency than usual. ‘This is to make people afraid, the message is that the next step is going to be killing you if you don’t leave this land,’ said Adra. At least two Palestinian villages are reported to have been entirely depopulated by settlers forcing residents to leave.
“Settlers have been targeting Palestinians living in Area C, which constitutes about 60% of the West Bank and is where the majority of illegal Israeli settlers live. ‘It’s scary because these settlers are now wearing uniforms, have guns and are claiming that they are the reserve army,’ Adra said. ‘These attacks are not a new thing. The settlers always planned for this: to take our land, and to kick us out of Area C. Now’s the chance to do it, because everyone is focused on Gaza.’
“Hamed Qawasmeh, coordinator for the Hebron International Resources Fund, a charity that supports Palestinians living near settlements, also sees the attacks as opportunistic. ‘The settlers feel that they have a free hand at this point to do what they have always wanted – which is to attack Palestinians, strategically,’ he said. ‘They see this as a chance to implement forced displacement of the Palestinian population.’
“Settler violence is being aided and abetted by Israel’s far-right government. Last week, Israel’s security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, announced plans to immediately distribute 10,000 rifles to settlers.”

This Darling, incredibly beautiful Young girl had to leave north Gaza with her family because of forced starvation, hunger and danger. Her Baba was carrying a white flag. This whole occupation, invasion, blockade, forced starvation, genocide is literal madness, it doesn't get any less insane the longer it goes on. Decolonise Palestine 🇵🇸 ♥ ❤ 💖 🍉🫒🍉🫒🍉🫒🍉🇵🇸
