In Manhatten werden ja bekanntlich zahlreiche Stadtviertel unterschieden. Darunter gibt es solche, die nach geographischen Kriterien benannt sind: Soho (South of Houston Street), TriBeCa (Triangle below Canal Street), West Village etc. Und es gibt die ethnischen, wie Little Italy, Chinatown. Daneben finden sich auch solche, die nach dem Gewerbe heissen, so Garment District oder Meatpacking District, wobei der letztere seinem Namen keine Ehre mehr macht (die Metzger sind längst ausgezogen) und der erstere seinem Gewerbe Sorgen (die ausländischen Anbieter sind günstiger). Dass es daneben auch noch einen Flower District gibt, davon hatte ich nichs gehört, bevor ich mittendrin gelandet bin.

Tatsächlich ist es so, dass sich auf der 28. Strasse zwischen der 6. und 7. Avenue (also da, wo sich das Hotel Hayden befindet, in dem ich wohne) ein Blumengeschäft an das andere reiht, wobei viele Firmen im Grosshandel tätig sind, aber die Laufkundschaft auch nicht verschmähen. Die Bezeichnung "District" ist allerdings inzwischen etwas übertrieben, denn ausserhalb dieses kurzen Strassenstücks finden sich nur noch vereinzelte Blumengeschäfte. Früher soll sich dieser Bereich bis zur 26. Strasse ausgedehnt haben.

Hier, an der 28. Strasse aber, blüht der Handel nach wie vor, die Läden legen ihre Ware auf dem Trottoir aus, dass man streckenweise zum Gänsemarsch gezwungen ist und Kreuzen schwierig wird.

28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue is The Flower District, which is both wonderful because it smells so good while walking through it, but also a little irritating because so much sidewalk real estate is taken up by plants. It’s inspired some pretty cool places, most notably The Fleur Room in The Moxy. 

The space is gorgeous, complete with high ceilings and soaring windows, and the drinks are delicious and naturally inspired by flowers. The Fleur of the Valley with vodka, strawberry, prosecco, and basil was a big favorite, as was the Electric Bloom featuring mezcal, hibiscus, and dry Curacao. 

Being on the 35th floor, the views are absolutely breathtaking, and if you come between 5 and 9PM during the week, the scene is quite chill if you’re in the mood to be in a beautiful space with delicious drinks and gorgeous views. Things seem to get more intense on the weekends from what I gather, but that’s hardly surprising. 

Definitely keeping this one tucked away for the next time I’m staying in this neighborhood!
