Lucy's Side Quest #3: Move In and a Boston Summer Begins

Yesterday, I woke up at 3:30 a.m. and started my move in process to my Boston summer housing, which entailed:

my dear mother driving me to DFW airport,

taking a flight to Detroit,

taking another flight to Boston,

lyfting to Mass Ave,

moving all my 5 boxes and two suitcases up five flights of stairs with Hanu,

and then being devastated to see that the my room was first of all dusty crusty and musty and second of all fugly.

A thick dark layer of dust, like soot, covered the windowsill, and hair and dust blowed up as I walked around the wooden floor that had a thin layer of grime (think tire skid marks). The old mattress had a yellowing paper-texture cover sheet that was torn like someone punched it multiple times in the middle. A fake, dirty, fire place served as decor, as if the lemon yellow and grapefruit orange walls could be made elegant.

So before I could take out a single item, Hanu and I swiffered up the floors and lysoled every surface/crevice. Bless her soul. How did the previous owner live in a dust bowl, I don't know. It was 9 p.m. by the time I felt like I could unpack a suitcase.

But alas, 36 hours later, it's now clean enough to do a room tour, so I welcome you to the Citrus Room!

POV: You walk in the Citrus Room

This is the view when you walk in. The piano, the monitor, and money tree are summer guests that you're taking care of for your friends. On the right of you are some mirrors you can watch yourself slay outfits or dance your little dance.

On the wall with the door, is a huge built-in shelf, for your makeup, books, textbooks, some food, shoes, anything really. There's also a built in closet to hang up clothes and put your box full of winter clothes and @notesoncrocs 's old soundproof foam. You and Renee are the same kind of ambitious delusional. Also spot @tumblasha 's beautiful letter on the dresser.

The bed is a single, on risers. Your Italian flag, gifted by GTL students, and the donk posters, and the favorite photograph you took of a Korean beach are on this wall.

The view outside your window is pretty nice. Mass Ave. Just how you like it. Yeah it gets loud at night, but it reminds you of when you used to live in Taipei as a child. That's all the thoughts you have on this room so far.

ANyways, my first day of UROPing went fine. Hayden is nice and quiet. But because I have no groceries yet, I went out and got a flour breakfast sandwich and coffee and was extremely baffaffelled. $17 for a McMuffin and drip coffee? I went hungry for lunch, but was full of pride. So more cooking is coming your way!!

The thing about it is this is pumpkin bread. The other thing about it is it used to be orange. The other other thing about it is I'm hungry and would like to eat pumpkin bread.

We used those mini potatoes this time (halved or quartered) in an effort to save me some energy, and thank god sggdgdgdgd. They're so soft and tender but the skin makes it have almost a snap to it? And I put in so many carrots, but I cut them into small pieces and that seems to work best (easier to get on a spoon). The meat is so fall apart tender 🤤

My body still feels super fucking exhausted and in pain, but my soul feels restored a bit agdggdgdgd

watching videos of this british man grocery shopping and even when you convert pounds to USD, its still insanely weirdly cheap for groceries. 99p is $1.25USD. he got 3 lbs of flour for 3 USD. thats insane. what the hell. i think bags of flour start at $5 around here. he got 1kg of frozen veggies for 99p. you cant even get a tiny bag of veggies for under $1.99. i feel insane

fucking DYING i have decided i’m committing to the bit of making a bunch of xmas cookies for a SMALL holiday party some friends having this week and i’ve picked three and collectively here are my restrictions: gluten-free, no pepper, no caffeine, no dairy, maybe no eggs, no alcohol, no chocolate, vegan 

#yeah everyones gay why do you ask? #a lot of the allergens just make it default but the people who are vegan arent actually allergic #the caffeine thing stresses me out bc i feel like i might just sweat coffee therefore making me as the baker semi poisonous #alcohol comes up bc there's a lot of rum-flavored recipes and a ton of things with fillings have wine or brandy or baileys #i think eggs are ok if baked into stuff actually. but i probs wouldnt make anything custard based to be safe #pepper is only semi relevant here bc i think the person with this allergy might end up having some if their housemates bring it. this one #is less limiting in baking bc i really liked spiced desserts but i feel like those are less popular with my friends #i made these chocolate cayenne cookies a few years back. they were fun and they kinda stung #anyway really ive just settled on no chocolate no alcohol as the default #and making one recipe vegan and GF #bc like fuck it's expensive esp with making frosting and stuff and having to use vegan butter and egg replacement and fancy flour #wait no there is one chocolate one nvm. it's red velvet bc i like red velvet. i've discovered you can make it genuinely red if you flavor #it with red wine! but i will not do that here

I bought a sourdough starter from the local folks I've been buying bread from since they're closing up shop till next spring and I'm terribly daunted by the daily feeding routine this yeast requires and there are so many more steps involved in baking sourdough, it's a multi day process..

But I can't Not have my weekly sourdough and it's been a dream of mine to learn how to do this proficiently so I'm determined to give it my best effort. I also learned that my friend really likes sourdough so being able to supply them with fresh bread is a HUGE motivation for me.

Wish me luck (and if you have any experience/tips feel free to share cause I have no fucking clue what I'm doing and the instructions they gave me with the starter are a bit confusing 😅)
