i've become somewhat obsessed with the oldest versions of some neopets' designs. i really vastly prefer the old jetsam and flotsam, as well as the old design for lenny. the updated lenny stripped it of its jester-like design elements which, imo, muddled and confused the point of its design. i liked its old jester hat and slightly curly toes, as well as its large, floppy-looking, goofy face.
also, i thought the oldest version of kacheeks was really funny. the drawing was kind of meant to be a visual joke, like, an over-rendered and uncannily shiny, but super simplified character like in ancient 3D art. but i feel like it doesn't really come through. oh well lol.
to tell you the truth, i don't really like the official art of ogrins. but i do think their design has potential (despite being somewhat wasted, lol). after all, they are a very odd and unique take on chimeras, being a cross between a goat, a tiger, and with other elements that don't have anything to do with real animals (their ears and tail make me think of fraggles).
regardless, they're really fun to draw.
this was a test drawing i did with the purpose of using glitter nail polish to see how it would look applied to a piece of art. surprisingly, not bad in photos, but obviously much more appealing irl. this would make great decorations to put on stuff like con badges. if only i ever went to cons, lmao.

three hearts, big brain theory 🧠
This is NOT my own theory whatsoever, but I just found this so interesting that I wanted to share and spread it around!!
Here is the original tweet; in it, OP says that octopuses are known to have 3 hearts, but it only took 1 stab from a ship to kill Ursula. What happened to the other 2 hearts? Well, OP proposes that the other 2 “hearts” are Floyd (Flotsam) and Jade (Jetsam), who had been killed by a misfired trident shot in an earlier scene (so Ursula is already theoretically down “2 whole hearts”). This may explain why Jade and Floyd’s unique magic or signature spells both mention a “heart”/ハート (hāto), being Shock the Heart and Bind the Heart, respectively.

one of the most obscure things I've found in my Neopets research is that the Underwater Chef has a name, or at least had a name at one point in time before the destruction of old Maraqua
Courtesy of the Wayback Machine:
This isn't just a random one-off, either. New Neopian Times, Issue 25:
Caption Contest 159:
And the New Neopian Times, Issue 58, which finally gives us a source for this info:
The problem is that this refers to the old Maraqua Neopedia article, which would've been taken down due to its destruction. No archives of the article itself exist, so all that's left are long-archived mentions of this one fact from it. According to PPT, it went down in 2006:
It was article 73. Here was the image it used:
It's not clear if this information is still considered canon internally, but when TNT updated the chef's old artwork they did conspicuously change the "F" on his hat (presumably for Flotsam) to an "S" so make of that what you will

"Flotsam Harbour: Book One" comes out later this year. For real this time.
It's a rewrite of my unfinished webcomic from 2015-2020.
Do you like aliens? UFO conspiracies? The Sixties? Angst? Queer characters? Then you might like this! Maybe, idk
I ain't giving an approximate date yet cuz last time I did that, I said October and I jinxed myself.

on familiars
In this recent tweet, Yana Toboso shares that originally Kalim was planned to have a small monkey familiar (which would make him similar to Aladdin, who also had a monkey companion, Abu).
There are apparently other students with familiars as well (I assume she means mob students that we don’t get to see, maybe even scrapped familiars for members of the main cast??). Some examples Toboso-sensei lists of familiar animals are owls, penguins, and puppies. (I wonder if Crewel was going to have Dalmation familiars?)
This is interesting, since the only other major mentions of familiars is when Crowley mistakes Grim for Yuu’s, and the lore that Trein’s familiar is Lucius (both of whom are cat-like creatures). Besides that, we don’t really hear of animal helpers to mages (unless you count Iago/Flotsam/Jetsam/Diablo etc. as familiars to the Great Seven). Silver’s woodland creature companions and the flamingos and hedgehogs that Heartslabyul tend to don’t appear to count as familiars.
I hope we get to learn more about familiars and how that kind of a bond forms with a mage!! How are familiars differentiated from just regular animal friends some of the students already have?? Maybe we’ll witness the TWST boys picking up familiars later in the main story…? 🤔
