Lately, I've been seeing the take that Mia is just as bad as Misty for leaving Maya in Kurain. True, they both did leave Maya in Morgan's "care", but I think people are forgetting the difference in intent. Misty left her daughters because she felt great shame for disgracing her family; Mia left because she wanted to find out what happened to her mother, and also because she didn't want to feud with Maya over the Master role. She had seen how her mother and aunt argued over who should have power in Kurain, and decided she didn't want that with Maya.

And, unlike Misty, there is some evidence to suggest that Mia didn't just dump Maya in Kurain with no plans on seeing her again. For example, this line in 3-4:

Mia: (The detective back then was Valerie Hawthorne!) At first I thought shooting someone for a kidnapping was crossing the line, but... If it was to protect her little sister, I can understand why she did it...

Now, this is the closest Maya ever gets to being alluded to in the flashback cases, but it's telling. If Mia could understand Valerie's potential reasoning for shooting Terry, then it does seem to suggest that Maya is dear to her. Dear enough to go those lengths for her, which does explain why Morgan never pulled anything on Maya before Mia's murder. And considering how much she resents Maya, she could've tried.

In addition, there's their conversation at the beginning of 1-2, which does suggest a close sisterly relationship. We're never told exactly how much Maya knew about Redd White, though she probably knew more than Phoenix. Regardless, she knew enough that Mia trusted her with an important piece of evidence. That, and the tutorial Maya gives you about the press mechanic, implies Maya sat in with Mia during at least one trial.

I know the two don't interact a lot on screen, but from what little time they do share, and also how highly Maya seems to regard her; seems to suggest that Mia's leaving was less like child abandonment and more like a close sibling leaving for college. Mia likely did whatever she could to make sure her relationship with Maya was properly maintained. Perhaps, introduce her to burgers, the food Maya loves so much?

My point is that take misses the nuance in Mia's own reasoning for leaving, and also makes Maya and Mia's relationship feel more unnecessarily angsty than it really needs to be. I'm sure Maya did feel upset when Mia left, but I think as she got older, she would resent the system that played a part in that decision moreso than her own sister.

You have to imagine that the reason why Phoenix and Maya became so close so quickly was because they had to rely on each other when handling all the administration of death after Mia's death. They would have had to arrange her funeral (right after having both been accused of her murder), had to look through her belongings, sort out her will (which she had definitely already wrote despite being so young because she must've known the danger she was putting herself in). Sure, the case itself would have brought them together but it was probably those weeks after when they had to continue setting aside the emotions of death and focus on practicality which really brought them together - and I hate that it was because Mia died.

a kinda bad analysis of music in the ace attorney trilogy!

(Please note that I have minimal experience with music other than knowing how to play the flute, so forgive me if I get terms wrong!)

Ace Attorney's music truly is a underappreciated side of the game. Not only are the character themes amazing, but the game does a fantastic job at connecting the themes together.

Characters who are similar, especially characters who are related, have themes similar to each other to show their relation and similarities to one another.

This is already pretty obvious, but I hope to really make it clear how amazing this game's soundtrack is.

Turnabout Sisters

This is the most obvious example of themes being similar to one another. I'm going to point out their similarities and differences.

Mia's theme (Aka Turnabout Sisters Ballade) is the most clearly different from the others. It's bittersweet and slow, but has a nostalgic feel to it. It shows not only that Mia is mature, but that she was a mentor in more ways than one.

Maya and Pearl's themes are undeniably similar to Mia's. This is most likely referencing how she was an amazing big sister to to Maya, and so Maya's theme is the more similar to Mia's than it is to Pearl's.

The song also takes on many different meanings depending on the situation. When played at the end of the court case, it feels happy and like a celebration. But it feels completely different after Mia's death.

Maya's theme is noticeably more happy and upbeat compared to Mia's, but I would argue it still has a very bittersweet feeling to it. It's almost as if Mia's song carries on in Maya's version, which is such a beautiful metaphor, even though it's obvious. it's my personal favorite version of the song, and I hold it near and dear to my heart.

Pearl's theme is similar to Maya's in the way that it's much more upbeat and silly, but it's lost it's bitter sweetness in place of child-like innocence. It's cute, fun, and matches Pearl's adorable personality.

I was going to also do an analysis of "The Great Revival" which is Franziska's and Mile's themes, but I'm tired so I'll do it another time. I hope you enjoyed reading this, if you did!
