Tumblr media
Though she knew it was coming, Nyxa wept when Fiona’s cancer overcame her. It couldn’t end like this. It wouldn’t. Nyxa fell to her knees and screamed until her throat hurt. She cried out to the empty room, her eyes turning to the window and looking at the moon as she invoked the name of the goddess, pleading with her to find a way to revive Fiona and restore her as the Supreme. Nyxa's prayers seemed to fall on deaf ears.
The tears came again, somehow even harder than before. The goddess of witches had refused her an answer, or even a sign. But that would not stop her. With Fiona laid in bed as if asleep, Nyxa dries her tears and steps out of the room, magically binding it to prevent all who wish to enter. She had to seek a willing ear and for that, she must leave the coven and search elsewhere.
The furious rapping on the door to Marie Laveau's caused her knuckles to ache, but she didn’t relent until the voodoo priestess answered. "What the hell do you want, witch bitch," Marie accused.
"I need to reverse death."
"Child, I don’t mess with that sort of thing. Not anymore." Marie made a move to close the door, but Nyxa wedged her Louboutin in, preventing the slam that Marie had intended to end this conversation.
"Don’t make me kill you," Nyxa threatened. Any other time, Marie would have laughed such a threat off, but there was a storm brewing in Nyxa's eyes and that made her threat far less empty than she would have liked.
With a heavy sigh, Marie relented. "Invoke Maman Brigitte. She’s in charge of the dead, and will be most likely to be sympathetic to your cause. Offer her pepper infused rum and ask her your favor. You might have to sweeten the deal. Now get the hell out."
Nyxa withdrew her shoe, scuffed, but replaceable, whereas Fiona was not. She made her way back to the sealed room, the rum having been rather easily acquired from a merchant in the french quarter. She fetched a silver goblet from the kitchen on her way up, and began the summoning.
"Maman Brigitte, Goddess of Death, come to me, hear my plea." Nyxa raised the cup towards the moon that still shown brightly into the room. She repeated her request twice more until a black smoke materialized in front of her. As it dissipated, it revealed the goddess. Nyxa knelt and offered her the glass of rum.
Taking the cup from her hand, she spoke. "What cause do you have to summon me?"
"I beseech you, restore Fiona to me."
"Your rum is good, but I fear it is not enough for me to fulfill your desire."
"Then what do you wish? Name it and it is yours." Nyxa wasn’t about to play like she wasn’t desperate. Whatever sacrifice was needed, she was prepared to make.
"I need a shepherd. When your time comes, your soul shall be indebted to me and you will usher souls to the other side for eternity."
Nyxa didn’t even need to think it over. "Yes." The word came out of her mouth naturally. What else was she going to do with eternity anyhow? She was probably bound for hell as it was. What Maman Brigitte was offering didn’t sound half so bad as the possibility of that. "As long as you can promise me that Fiona will be restored as she was in health and spirit, then I accept. What do I need to do?"
"It’s a blood pact. I’ll need your blood." Nyxa nodded and made for the letter opener kept in the drawer. She used it to cut her palm, and let the blood drip into the goblet of rum. She winced at the sharp pain of the force needed to make the dull blade cut her skin. She’d clean and wrap it later.
Maman Brigitte drank down the contents of the cup with no hesitation. The moon's light was snuffed out by a gathering of clouds and lightning flashed across the sky. By the time darkness settled again, Maman Brigitte was gone and Nyxa was left with Fiona.
The young witch rushed to her bedside. "Fiona! Fiona, please. Tell me she brought you back to me!" She felt more tears well up within her, and found that she couldn’t hold them back, the anticipation of disappointment was too much. Just as her vision began to blur, Fiona turned her head towards her. The sobs now were ones of joy. The voodoo goddess had made good on her promise.
Nyxa reached for Fiona's hand, taking it between both of hers. "What deal did you strike to save me," Fiona questioned disapprovingly.
"It doesn’t matter. I would have struck any deal to see you as you should be, as the Supreme of this coven."
"Ha! Don’t tell me whatever deal you made wasn’t just a little bit selfish. This coven surely doesn’t want me, no one but you, anyhow."
"Is that so wrong?"
Fiona hummed, as if thinking it over, but didn’t reply. Heaven forbid she show a little bit of gratitude even after having just been brought back from the dead. Nyxa didn’t care. All she wanted was Fiona, and that’s what she’d gotten.

HBO Max New Releases: February 2021
https://ift.tt/2MlHkNh
When it released Wonder Woman 1984 to its HBO Max servers in December, WarnerMedia made it abundantly clear that it was ready for a new era of movie distribution. Now, in its list of new releases for February 2021, Warner is attempting another grand experiment for HBO Max.
Judas and the Black Messiah premieres on HBO Max this Feb. 12 and is by every indication the kind of film that awards shows go gaga over. Both Daniel Kaluuya and and Lakeith Stanfield look to be at the top of their respective games in this story about Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and the FBI that wants to take him down. Will this have the same rhetorical oomph on the small screen? Guess we’ll find out!

The rest of HBO Max’s February 2021 offerings are uncommonly film heavy. The other two original movies of note are quite different from one another. There is No “I” in Threesome arrives on Feb. 11 and the decidedly more family friendly Tom & Jerry premieres on Feb. 26.
HBO Max will feature the U.S. premiere of It’s a Sin on Feb. 18. Beyond that, however, it’s another round of intriguing library title additions. A whole host of Batman films and DC properties arrive throughout the month including Batman (1989) and Aquaman (2018).
Here is everything else coming to HBO Max this month.

(For the ask meme yes dlkkhf;fd) Agatha, Vivian, and Luna
AAA THANK YA FIDDLES! Just did Viv, so!! (Also puttin’ this under a readmore because BOY HOWDY do I like to yammer!)
AGATHA
Full Name: Agatha Roksana LockerbyGender and Sexuality: A gal! Same deal as Viv- also a child, also probably pan!Pronouns: She/herEthnicity/Species: Russian/English/American! (Her dad’s of English descent, and her mom’s a first-generation Russian immigrant!)Birthplace and Birthdate: Born September 19th in... The middle of nowhere, USA?Guilty Pleasures: Secretly way into vampire/werewolf/ect romance stuff à la twilight, though she’s loathe to admit it! (She honestly probably keeps anything that she considers below her level of intelligence/sophistication thoroughly hidden bc she doesn’t want to be seen as vapid or childish!)Phobias: Hummm... Tough one! Not sure, but I could see her being nervous about heightsWhat They Would Be Famous For: Pretty much everything about the concept of fame would be totally unappealing to Aggie- I could see her being a fairly well-known author thoWhat They Would Get Arrested For: Raising the dead in a public spaceOC You Ship Them With: Again, p much no one? I’ll admit I don’t do a lotta inter-character shipping lmao!OC Most Likely To Murder Them: Most likely whatever undead/infernal being she calls up without fully knowing what she’s getting into, dear, sweet childFavorite Movie/Book Genre: Horror/Fantasy, no doubtLeast Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: The sexy vampire, which she hateloves, and the wicked and unreasonably evil witch (Oohhh on the contrary tho, now that I think about it, I bet she’d love the witch in Into the Woods)Talents and/or Powers: Agatha is a self-declared witch in training! She can do some basic spells, but not without a tangible spellbook (Her magic is based on words and strength of will, and requires a lot of focus for her to not only connect WITH magic, but also to shape it to her desires!)Why Someone Might Love Them: She’s a clever and warm gal once you get to know her, and will give everything she’s got to defend the things she cares about! She’s also got great taste in niche media and can probably tell you what fantasy creature you would beWhy Someone Might Hate Them: She’s very closed off and puts up walls between herself and the world by the dozen- she can also be a bit selfish and too wrapped up in her own thoughts to stay grounded in the world around herHow They Change: After spending time with Viv, Aggie learns to open up and be a bit more trusting of not only Viv but also, the world as a whole! She loosens up and, while still being guarded, starts to let herself form actual, lasting connections with othersWhy You Love Them: Aggie is one of my oldest OCs and has undergone so much change since her creation, and she’s just! A really comforting character for me lmao! (And again, real fun to draw lmao, tho much faster than Viv!)
LUNA
Full Name: Luna WilliamsGender and Sexuality: Gal, bi/pan (sensing a pattern lmao!)Pronouns: She/herEthnicity/Species: African AmericanBirthplace and Birthdate: Born in the heart of Andalus city iinnn September 13th?? What’s with all the Virgos holy dolyGuilty Pleasures: Okay, now that I know more about the whole deal?? The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise in its entirety, no doubt- I bet she has a group to watch new episodes with!Phobias: Ooohh... Probably afraid of spiders/large bugs in generalWhat They Would Be Famous For: Now that I think about it, I could totally see Luna having like, a really well-known youtube cooking channel?? She’s undoubtedly the best cook in her group and she’s got a super welcoming personality, I feel like folks would really be into it!What They Would Get Arrested For: Doing something less than legal to help a loved one, probably (which is actually! Part of Luna’s planned story! Not gonna get arrested for it tho)OC You Ship Them With: Hummm, none (she deserves better than her two options in her own OC group)OC Most Likely To Murder Them: I don’t.... None?? Roy’s most likely to drive her up the wall thoFavorite Movie/Book Genre: Big into romance and comedies! I could also see her getting super amped for like, Fury Road and stuff like that though omgLeast Favorite Movie/Book Cliche: The powerful black woman who doesn’t need anyone, let her LiveTalents and/or Powers: Great at cooking! Overall, has a talent I’m incredibly jealous of: Luna is just, really good at being a Goddamn Adult and taking care of herself & others around her (Which, again, is why her and Roy the manchild are kind of at odds)Why Someone Might Love Them: Luna’s fun and cool and a total mom- she’s incredibly passionate and driven, and cares fiercely for her friends and family! Knows how to make a person feel welcome and would be overall super pleasant to hang out around! Why Someone Might Hate Them: Luna’s not the type to make any part of herself or her personality smaller for other folks- she’s an incredibly determined person and if you’re standing between her and what she needs to do, she’s probably not gonna be your best friendHow They Change: I’ll admit I don’t really have any of this group’s arcs really set out? I could see Luna learning to like, be okay with putting herself first instead of constantly tending to other peopleWhy You Love Them: Luna’s this super cool and nurturing lady who’s got her life together in a way that makes me oddly proud?? I wanna be like her!! (Also, she’s got an electric whip, which I just think is super neat)

Watch the hour-long video of 11 short new plays below.
In “Holla,” a serial killer (Will Swenson) wearing the  distorted white mask from the Scream series, makes an ominous phone call to Chris (Chris Herbie Holland) an unsuspecting Black teenager, intending to scare him to death. But the conversation takes an unexpected turn.
“What’s your favorite scary movie, Chris?” the deep-voiced killer asks, accompanied by spooky music.
“Fruitvale Station,” Chris replies, referring to the movie based on the real-life police killing of Oscar Grant.
“I meant scary, scary…” That movie “might be scarier for…” — he hesitates – “certain people.”
Chris calls him a racist. The killer gets defensive. “I wasn’t going to kill you because you’re black…I think it’s important to kill all people..”
The four-minute play by Lee Edward Colston II – funny, pointed — is the first of the 11 new short works in #WhileWeBreathe, subtitled “A Night of Creative Protest,” which grew out of conversations the week after the police killing of George Floyd. It debuted this week, and will remain online.
“Holla” is something of an outlier in #WhileWeBreathe. More representative is
Azure D Osborne-Lee’s “Sundown Support.” In it, Kevin R. Free portrays the leader of a support group “for survivors of racial terror,” where we hear some horror stories of police abuse.
One can argue that the entire enterprise functions in some ways as a support group.
That’s been my reaction to most of the anthology productions that have proliferated since the start of the pandemic. They seem to exist on three levels.
They are in effect support groups for the theater artists involved – ways for them to stay busy, feel useful, express themselves, and stay engaged with their community (These are generally not paying gigs.)   Almost all of these productions are also, crucially, fundraisers, most for organizations meeting urgent needs.  #WhileWeBreathe is a fundraiser for NAACP Legal Defense Fund, The Bail Project, Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity, BYP 100, Forced Trajectory Project, Justice Committee (JC), and Southerners on New Ground (SONG).
And then, on a third level, these group efforts are also gifts for theatergoers – stories or works of art or entertainments (call them what feels apt), often offered at minimal or no charge.  Put together with great passion and great speed, these shows seem to put such a priority on community that, one suspects, nobody is excluded and nothing is edited.
Since the participants are talented professionals at the top of their game, these anthologies have felt to me not so much uneven as overwhelming.
In several of the plays in #WhileWeBreathe,  a character expresses his or her anger and/or confusion in what initially sounds like a rant but turns into something powerful and lyrical.  In Liza Jessie Peterson’s “Do You Really Want To Know?,” for example, Michele Shay portrays a woman asked via text by her family how she’s doing, and she decides to tell them: “Some days I’m just paralyzed with rage. It all comes in waves. I can’t think about George Floyd without thinking about Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery….” Photographs of the victims slowly cover the video as she mentions their names, blotting her out.In Khari Wyatt’s “Mister,” Ty Jones tells his character’s story of heartache hardship, with a payoff that emphasizes the importance of dignity.
Two of the plays present the twin urgencies of protest and pandemic as a conflict: In Steve Harper’s “Three People,” a brother who is a medical professional (Keith Eric Chappelle) argues with his sister (Birgundi Baker) that she should stay home and stay healthy rather than march in the streets; in Arvind Ethan David’s “Pre-existing Condition,” a single character (Neil Brown Jr.) debates the same dilemma within himself.  “The arc of history may bend towards justice and this may be our moment to pull it a little closer, but the arc of a pandemic only knows one thing – exponential growth’’
In two other plays, we hear from characters who turn out to be dead; both dramas are probably more affecting if you don’t realize right away that you’re hearing from murder victims, so I won’t name them.
#WhileWeBreathe ends with Aurin Squire’s “Mississippi Goddamn,” which is the longest play (at about ten minutes) and feels like the most developed. Lynn Whitfield and Esau Pritchett play an older couple who live through five days of the current crisis, recalling a lifetime of tragedy, including the circumstances in which Nina Simone wrote “Mississippi Goddamn.”  Their relationship is touching and subtly amusing, their recollections deeply sad, their attitude evolves into…hopeful?
#WhileWeBreathe is dedicated to Rev C.T. Vivian and Rep. John Lewis, towering figures of the civil rights movement, both of whom died on July 17 of this year. “We follow you into good trouble.”

Beto O'Rourke to return home from campaign trail after El Paso mass shooting
poster=”https://static.politico.com/fd/df/4824ec3040d49a0004b643338887/190803-betoelpaso-vasquez.jpg”
true
LAS VEGAS — Beto O’Rourke, choking back tears moments after a mass shooting in his hometown of El Paso, Texas, said Saturday that he will cut short his Nevada campaign swing, returning home amid the aftermath of the rampage.
The Democratic presidential candidate canceled events in Nevada on Saturday and California on Monday.
Story Continued Below
“I am incredibly saddened, and it is very hard to think about this,” the former Texas congressman and El Paso city councilman told reporters here, after speaking at an American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees forum.
“But I’ll tell you, El Paso is the strongest place in the world. This community’s going to come together. I’m going back there right now to be with my family, to be with my hometown.”
Reports of multiple deaths and injuries at a shopping mall in El Paso were still unfolding as 19 presidential candidates began taking turns speaking at the labor forum, with the severity of the shooting increasingly clouding the proceedings. By the time O’Rourke appeared on stage, he appeared shaken.
“Keep that shit on the battlefield,” O’Rourke said of military-style weapons, drawing a burst of cheers and applause. “Do not bring it into our communities. I don’t want to see it in our malls or in our schools or in our churches or in our synagogues.”
O’Rourke appeared before reporters after a brief delay — allowing another candidate, Tom Steyer, to take his spot in the lineup.
When O’Rourke came out, he said he had spoken with El Paso’s mayor, the El Paso County sheriff and with the congresswoman who succeeded him, Veronica Escobar.
“They are all doing everything that they can, and we’re still learning information about the situation,” O’Rourke said. “And so, I just ask for everyone’s strength for El Paso right now, everyone’s resolve to make sure that this does not continue to happen in this country.”
“Any illusion that progress is inevitable or that the change that we need is going to come of it’s own accord, shatter in moments like these and that it’s upon every single one of us. There is no luxury in this democracy of sitting this one out,” O’Rourke said.
“To the people of El Paso, any of you who are here today or who are out there right now we are thinking of you and we want to make this better going forward,” O’Rourke continued.
O’Rourke, more than most candidates, has grounded his political profile in his home town. He has used El Paso as an example for its relatively low crime rate and, situated on the border with Juarez, Mexico, its multiculturalism. By Saturday afternoon, hours after the shooting, he was tweeting the addresses of a family reunification center and a location to donate blood.
Multiple people were killed and one person was in custody, police said Saturday afternoon. President Donald Trump has been briefed on the incident, according to the White House, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott was heading to El Paso on Saturday afternoon, according to a statement.
Trump tweeted Saturday afternoon: “Terrible shootings in ElPaso, Texas. Reports are very bad, many killed. Working with State and Local authorities, and Law Enforcement. Spoke to Governor to pledge total support of Federal Government. God be with you all!”
In a statement, Escobar said: “Today, El Paso is facing the indescribable pain and horror that too many other American communities have had to endure. Our hearts are completely broken by this needless loss of life, especially here in our beautiful home. … I am imploring that we come together, and once and for all address the gun violence epidemic that plagues our nation.”
In Las Vegas, a procession of Democratic presidential candidates reacted to the shooting with heightened calls for stricter gun controls. But the reaction was so similar to the outpouring that has met previous mass shootings that political movement appeared no more likely. It was less than a week ago that a gunman killed three people at a food festival in California.
Sen. Cory Booker was finishing answering reporters’ questions about mass incarceration, his performance in the last presidential debate and former Vice President Joe Biden, among other things, when a reporter called out, “Senator Booker, there’s an active shooter situation going on in El Paso …”
Returning to the microphone, Booker said that while he did not have details, he lamented what he called a moment in American history in which “we seem to be almost accepting this idea” that shootings are a regular occurrence.
“I have had enough of this,” he said. “This is a uniquely American problem, a uniquely American problem that we have such mass slaughter in our communities like this.”
Steyer, the billionaire Democratic activist and late entrant into the 2020 primary, placed blame on “a failed government in Washington, D.C.” that he said is beholden to the interest of gun manufacturers, while Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) vowed to “take on the NRA.”
“I just cannot believe this,” she said.

🎄 + Cassandra Reagan!!
Cassandra celebrates Christmas by decorating, though sometimes minimally with just a few garlands strewn around various parts of the house, watching some version of A Christmas Carol (a different version every year, until she’s exhausted them all and has to start again), dinner over at Constance's and then an exchange of gifts with Constance (and Simon, Cassandra's cat) back at her place before settling in by the fire, instrumental Christmas music playing softly in the background as the two of them sip eggnog.
Send me 🎄 + an OC and I’ll tell you what they do for Christmas (or whatever winter holiday they celebrate)

Pray You Might — Chapter One (A Dire Decision)

Carol watched out the window as the trees seemed to fly by them as her brother drove. "Thank you," Carol said, out of the blue.
"Don't thank me," Daniel said, hoping he was able to mask the guilt in his voice.
"Why not? Without you, I'd be, oh hell, I don’t know where I’d be. I don’t even dare to think about it. You’re the only one that supported me through all this, Danny. I know I’ve caused the family some grief, but I think we're out of the woods now, wouldn’t you say?"
And out of the woods they were, physically speaking, as the trees thinned out and a massive and foreboding stone building was revealed in the clearing. She knew where they were, she realized with a shudder. It had been in all the newspapers and on television when this place opened up as a sanitarium two years ago. This was Briarcliff. And Daniel was slowing the car down.
"Daniel, what are we doing here," Carol asked, a panic rising up her throat, causing her voice to go up an octave.
"I’m sorry, Carol. I really am, but this all has to stop. After we found you with—" Daniel wouldn’t say it, she knew he wouldn’t. He’d stopped mid sentence as he turned in the driveway. "Anyways, after that, mom and dad, they couldn’t see you carry on that way anymore."
"And so they roped you into taking me here? Daniel, don’t you know how insane that is?" Had this been normal circumstances, the two would have shared a laugh at the unintentional pun, but not this time. Not in a situation this dire.
"Don’t— please don’t make this any harder than it has to be. It’s only for a few months. Then you can come home. You’ll be the old you again," he tried to assure, but Carol was anything but assured.
"'The old me', what’s that supposed to mean," she spat, no longer holding back any emotion. "The old me, as you so put it, was a repressed, timid little mouse of a girl. I find a modicum of independence and sexual liberation and you’re all ready to throw me in a nuthouse? One day you’ll see this for the cruelty it is, Daniel. You’ll regret the day you ever brought me here."
Daniel pulled the car to a stop at the door and got out. Carol was past reasoning with. Their parents knew the only way she’d get in the car was with her brother, and they’d been right, but he felt used. What if Carol was right? What if this wasn’t what she needed? Had they gotten it all wrong? Daniel stopped at the back of the car as he began to doubt himself. He almost got back in to drive off with Carol, until he heard her scream.
"No, get off of me! You will not take me out of this car! Daniel!" But Daniel was frozen as the orderlies dragged her out. He wanted to help her, tell the men to get their hands off his sister, but he couldn’t move.
Finally, Carol was wrestled free from the car. Daniel still watched on in horror as she struggled against the orderlies as they attempted to restrain her. "I’ll be back for you, Carol," Daniel was finally able to call out to her. She only screamed his name in response as she was taken inside. A tear rolled down Daniel's cheek as he walked around the car again to get in and drive off. "I’m sorry," he muttered to himself. "I’m so sorry."
As Carol adjusted her vision to the darkness inside of Briarcliff, she took in her surroundings. She was in a foyer with a grand staircase unlike any she’d ever seen before. "Staircase to Heaven, I call it. It is remarkable, isn’t it," a voice asked, though the question was rhetorical. Carol peeled her eyes away from the staircase, bringing her line of sight back down until she came face to face with the woman who’d spoken.
The woman before Carol had an air of authority about her. She wore a habit, her blonde hair neatly pinned back beneath the wimple. It was clear that she held a position of power within Briarcliff. "I'm Sister Jude," she introduced herself, her voice carrying a mixture of sternness and compassion. "Welcome to Briarcliff Manor. I trust you'll find our facility...enlightening."
Carol's heart pounded in her chest as she tried to gather her composure. She didn't know what to expect, but she knew she had to stay strong. "Thank you, Sister Jude," she replied, her voice slightly shaky, yet she wasn’t going to let her emotions rule her right now. "But I must insist, there's been a mistake. I shouldn't be here."
Sister Jude raised an eyebrow, seemingly unfazed by Carol's protest. "Mistakes are not made at Briarcliff, my dear. We are here to provide care and rehabilitation for individuals with troubled minds. And from what I've been told, your mind is in need of some guidance."
Carol's eyes narrowed with defiance. "I am not insane, Sister. I may have made mistakes, trusted the wrong people, but I am not mentally ill."
Sister Jude's lips curled into a cold smile. "Oh, dear child, denial is a common defense mechanism, especially prior to treatment. Many of our patients arrive here believing they are perfectly sane. But rest assured, our methods will help reveal the truth to you."
Carol's heart sank as she realized the magnitude of her situation. It seemed futile to argue further. She took a deep breath, trying to steel herself for whatever lay ahead. "What...what happens now?"
Sister Jude's expression softened slightly, her eyes showing only a mere glimmer of sympathy. "Now— Carol is it? —we begin your evaluation and treatment. We will uncover the depths of your perversion and help you to confront your demons. But fear not, for the ultimate goal is healing and redemption."
Carol scoffed, hardly audible, as she glanced back at the grand staircase. A sense of dread washed over her. She had been thrown into a labyrinth of darkness, surrounded by who knows how many haunted souls within Briarcliff's walls. Was she to become one of them and lose all her sense of self until her family saw fit that she was 'cured'? Not if she had anything to say about it.
