However, having concluded the adventure of Powerduck - The galactic adventures of Fantomiald (FR), my new foreign publication to envy is the Lustiges Taschenbuch Premium.
Look for it on Inducks, in my opinion it deserves it. A bit of a Big that hosts sagas (generally with a modern twist: Pk, MMMM, X-Mickey, Darkwing Duck, Darkenblot, Fantomallard, Topolinia 20802, Fantomallard, Area 15, etc.). Volumes with a number of pages varying between 370 and 388 for a price of €12 (previously it was 10).
From what I can understand they also have a response from the public, so much so that they have gone from semi-annual to quarterly publications. And there is also a parallel series that hosts global productions (such as Young Donald Duck, Spookyzone, Wacky Knight, etc.).
It also has versions in the Netherlands (Donald Duck Premium, with a greater variability of pages) and in Finland/Norway, but in the latter countries the volumes are anthological, not monothematic and seem to have had less success (in fact they have concluded the publications).
In practice, the Premium is my idea of how the Big could become. But these are my far-fetched ideas, the Big sells as it is, so why change and divert promising material away from more expensive and, therefore, more profitable formats?
(Yes, without the new PK in my hands I'll throw myself into Fantaeditoria)
[Errata corrige: the norwegian title wasn't anthological, I messed up with a similar one]
...

May I share one of my favorite headcanons?
I absolutely love the idea of Donald being a Fantomius (or Fantomallard) fan. I think it is not too fetched to say he likes the 1920´s gentleman thief, and I don´t mean he likes him just because he is thankful for the inspiration for Paperinik (yet I believe that part of the reasons), I think Donald is a fan the same way anyone can be a fan of Robin Hood or Batman...I like to think Donald is a fanboy
But what proof do I have or why do I choose to believe this? Well, in some stories he shows interest in him
Tumblr media
He asked a famous author who have just released a book inspired on the thief how accurate the book was, and later purchased said  book. Keep on mind he has John Quackett´s original diary, this is more like collecting memorabilia of something he likes.
Tumblr media
“what´s better than a quiet afternoon on the sofa with a glass of milk and an interesting book?”
On the same story, he looks very happy to be able to read it. He is reading it for fun. He is basically reading fanfiction...
Tumblr media
And he seems to be a little protective of him and his memory. When a guy appeared and started using Fantomius name for his own, criminal purposes, Donald got mad.
But another interesting point i would like to drawn your attention to is that neither Fantomius or Lord John Quackett were present figures in Donald´s childhood. He didn´t grew up knowing about him or admiring him. He first learned about him the day he decided he would become Paperinik
Tumblr media
So it wasn´t “I will be like my childhood hero” it actually was more like “This guy has point”.
I personally think Donald is a fan, and I love the idea of that. And konwing both characters, it makes sense Don would admired him: Lord Quackett was a noble who reject his possition, disliked the hypocritic, superficial ways of the rich. He took from those who didn´t deserve it an gave to those who needed it. He never quite fit on high class sociaty, being a rebel since childhood.
Tumblr media
John Quackett was an outcast. People thought little of him, he was seen as a clumsy clown who was a complete failure, and was always understimted and avoided.
Donald can easily relate to this.
Tumblr media
The circustnces are different, I know (John was an incredible actor and convinced everyone he was a useless richboy in order to keep his Fantomius persona safe, while Donald´s mistakes and disasters are, most of the time, real honest mistakes)
It is been stated in many occasions that Donald reads comic books, he may be fan of superheroes, so it makes sense he would admire someone who get´s close to the concept: not a hero in a traditional sense, but a Robin Hood type of figure who mocks the high class and hit them when it hurt them the most.
And Donald´s first deed as a super hero was exactly that

So...I watched the Ocean's 8 trailer and am excited (only because I am a ridiculous heist movie fanatic and will watch ALL of them even the bad ones and I'll enjoy it. PS please watch Thailand's Bad Genius as it takes a peek at how southeast asian schools value grades over students and the story of the number of students who beat the system)
I'm going to marathon Ocean's 11/12/13 soon and it got me thinking...
Why no DT heist stories? (Maybe Fantomallard/Fantomius pulled many but I need to get my hands on them)

“Friend from the Other Side” and timeline problems
Okay, so maybe some of you remember this link, summarizing the storyline of Fantamallard/Fantomius? It turns out there is one special volume showcasing the history of Gearloose family. The person who made the summary, created a special timeline and it looks like this:
In the third volume of the special PANINI COMICS; Fantomius-LADRO GENTILUOMO- is instead presented a card with the biography of Copernicus Gearloose and his family: In 1825 the young inventor Leonardo Gearloose opens in San Francisco California a laboratory for steam machines design and a few years later he married the French artist Elisabeth Leduck. In 1844 the twins Copernicus and Cartesius were born. Copernicus immediately showed that he had inherited his father’s genius, building since he was young complex equipments, but for which his brother, less brilliant, often gets credit. In 1850 after the annexation of the California to the United States, the Gearloose family moved to Duckburg the city state of Calisota. In 1862 The twins are High school graduating. In 1863 Copernicus applies to get the patent for his first invention; a portable voice communicator, and began his career as inventor, renting a small workshop in a basement in Duckburg. Instead his brother becomes an apprentice of the mysterious Spokius Spectrus working in his secret laboratory in the Three Towers Castle. In 1864 Copernicus married the ballerina Anastasia Anatryn and they have a son Ratchet Gearloose. A few years after some mysterious events his wife disappeared and the young Ratchet leaves Duckburg to look for her. In 1868 Copernicus applied for the new University of California in Berkeley (where he met the Egyptologist Howard Duck) but never stop working to his inventions. It was expelled the following year because of his brother. In 1880 Ratchet, brilliant like his father, was in Louisville, Kentucky where he sells pills able to purify the muddy water of the Mississippi river. In that place he was noticed by the young Scrooge MucDuck of which will become friend and companion in adventures. In 1883, Ratchet and Scrooge are witness of the famous eruption of Krakatoa vulcano in Indonesia. In 1890 Ratchet returned to Duckburg and a year later his son Fulton Gearloose was born Fulton will be the future father of the famous Gyro Gearloose. In 1906 Ratchet left again Duckburg, probably with his friend Scrooge, visiting different countries in the world. In 1910 Copernicus Gearloose knows the noble of Anglo-French origin Lord Quackett alias Fantomallard and after some events they become good friend and Copernicus moved to Villa Rose where he made for Fantomallard a variety of pecial devices.
On the one hand, it’s very useful, especially for someone as obsessed with Gearloose family as me. On the other hand, it looks like what I thought out about post-Java Ratchet is proved uncanonical.
Oh, well, I wasn’t going to include things from Italian comics, anyway.
I also don’t know if I ever use this timeline while doing Life and Times of Ratchet Gearloose. Because I’ve read somwehere that Pepernik comics are set in different continuity (just like both versions of DuckTales aren’t in the same continuity as comics).

"K" stands for King... of Terror - Pt.2
«If we think about his audacity and the fear he instills especially on the aristocrats he robs (but also about the masks he uses to carry out the thefts), then he took a lot from Giussani sisters' Diabolik, who also inspired Paperinik, so much so that I could define Fantômius and Dolly Paprika as the "Diabolik and Eva Kant of Duckburg".» Marco Gervasio (HERE's the full interview if you wanna check it out... mind you it's in italian, sorry ^^")
Tumblr media
As I mentioned in the previous post, who's more akin to Diabolik (starting from his look with the very characteristic V shaped hairline) is Paperinik's source of inspiration: Fantômius, known internationally as Fantomallard.
Tumblr media
Romano Scarpa gives us a first glance at Fantômius (actually Gladstone in a costume) in "Paperinik alla riscossa" by Guido Martina.
Duckburg's gentleman thief is named after Fantômas, the serial killer and elusive criminal mastermind created in 1911 by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, but he’s definetely more alike to Diabolik (just, not a cold blooded murderer, he’s not 😅).
Unlike Paperinik, Fantômius is a thief through and through; a masked criminal who terrorized the city of Duckburg in the 20s and who's first mentioned by Guido Martina in Paperinik's debut story "Paperinik il diabolico vendicatore" in 1969.
In Paperinik's second story, "Paperinik alla riscossa", we get to know Fantômius' girlfriend Dolly Paprika. The two are a homage by Guido Martina to the diabolical duo Diabolik/Eva Kant.
Tumblr media
Eva from Diabolik year XLV #10 and Dolly from "Dolly Paprika!"
Lady Kant, whose name comes from Immanuel Kant (philosopher loved by Angela Giussani since school), is considered one of the most beautiful women in the world and she's the perfect specular match to Diabolik. Eva Kant's character is inspired by Lady Maud Beltham, Fantomas' lover who saves him from the guillotine in a way much akin to what happens to Eva and Diabolik.
A cunning, cold hearted and skilled thief, Lady Kant appears for the first time in 1963 in Diabolik third issue "L'arresto di Diabolik" and since then she's been Diabolik's perfect partner in crime and life.
Tumblr media
Lady Kant from the back cover of Diabolik R #668
When Marco Gervasio takes up Fantômius' character and starts the creation of his personal Gervasio-verse, he gives him an entourage of secondary characters which is heavily based on Diabolik's and he focuses heavily on Dolly, delving into her story and tightening even more the laces that bound her to Lady Kant.
But Gervasio also provides Fantômius with his personal institutional nightmare: Commissioner Pinko, obvious parody of Diabolik's nemesis inspector Ginko (and who is my favorite character, I just want him to win so badly every time!!! 😭😭):
Tumblr media
Commissioner Pinko from "L'evasione di Fantomius", and inspector Ginko from Diabolik year LVII #2 back cover and played by Valerio Mastandrea in 2021 "Diabolik"
Commissioner Alcmeone Pinko is certainly not the sharpest tool in the shed and it's easy game for Fantômius to elude him. Ginko, on the other hand, is totally another league.
Appearing alongside Diabolik in the first issue of the series, he's an upright policeman and a brilliant and canny detective who can easily stand up to Diabolik's genius. We are after all talking about a character inspired by Sherlock Holmes, pipe and all.
Ginko is Diabolik's good alter ego. He's actually so similar to Diabolik some speculate they may even be related, I for instance wouldn't be surprise if we end up finding out they're twin brothers like Fantômas and Juve! After all we don't know Diabolik's real name since it's unknown even to him, and Ginko's not the inspector real name either: he changed it for... reasons.
Tumblr media
Tell me this is not a beautiful shot of commissioner Pin- err, I mean... inspector Ginko from 2022 "Diabolik - Ginko all'attacco!" (I am not in any way shamelessly fangirling over the inspector 🙃)
Needless to say, despite his bravery and intuition, Ginko never manages to arrest Diabolik because, well (let's put it bluntly) he's too fair and honest. Ginko refuses to act outside the law in any way, and stubbornly wants to rely only on the police means... though he does sometimes use some gadgets confiscated to Diabolik and puts them to use with extreme astuteness (like when he cut two masks in two and joined the two halves to create a totally new face and actually managed to fool even Diabolik himself!)
But yeah, Diabolik's the title character... he just can't be arrested for good (just think of them as Mickey Mouse and the Phantom Blot, just with the Phantom Blot as the protagonist)! Anyhow, the respect between the two runs deeply.
Tumblr media
"Hands up, Diabolik!"
Actually, Commissioner Pinko is not the first parody character of Ginko to appear on Topolino. In "Paperinik e il ritorno a Villa Rosa", our masked vigilante stumbles upon a newly appointed police inspector named Pinko "il Pallino" ("Pinco Pallino" in italian is an expression to define a random guy, I think in English it'd translate as "Joe Soap"), who might actually be a grandson of Fantômius' commissioner:
Tumblr media
Inspector Pinko "il Pallino" from "Paperinik e il ritorno a Villa Rosa"
There’s one more main character in Diabolik comics who does appear in disguise in Fantômius’ stories. I’m talking about the duchess Altea of Vallenberg, secret love of Ginko, who appears for the first time in 1964 on Diabolik #22 “Il grande ricatto”.
Tumblr media
Altea von Waller duchess of Vallenberg from Diabolik #22 and portrayed by Monica Bellucci from 2022 "Diabolik: Ginko all'attacco!"
Just like Altea, Pinko’s wife Adelaide Grimani comes from a noble family, venetian in this case. Unfortunately for Ginko and Altea, who could never be really together because of the social gap between the two (Altea’s the widow of the duke of Vallenberg, cousin of the king of Beglair), Pinko and Adelaide are happily married.
Tumblr media
Adelaide Grimani and Altea of Vallenberg: you can't buy class!
I realize I've talked more about Ginko than Diabolik or Fantômius... I'm definitely not sorry! 😛

How Lord John Quackett became Fantomius/Fantomallard, a sequence gently reminiscing of French popular fiction like Arsène Lupin or Fantômas and the origins of both Batman (the B&W flashback where he discovers Zorro as a kid, the study with that big window you can’t help expecting a bat or a masked duck to crash through) and Paperinik/the Duck Avenger, who’ll later find this costume hidden in an armchair…

Hi, I create comic dubs of Donald Duck comics and I took your English version of The Astounding Endeavours of Fantomallard, Gentleman Thief, and made it into a silent film complete with music from that time period. I would like to credit whoever translated it. Is that you? Or do you know who did? If so, how would they like to be credited?
No, I'm sorry, I didn't translate these comics

Hey!! I love your blog ESPECIALLY everything about your Ducktales Coven AU. I might be able to find the answer to this question if I do a little digging through your blog but I thought I’d ask: could you give kind of a summary of the Grand Coven and where they came from? Did you create them for the AU or for something different? Thank you so much and keep creating!!
heyee! Sorry it took awhile to answer anon! Thank you so much for your kind words and welcome to my blog! Don’t be shy to say hi to me anytime. You actually came at a good time, I was wondering how to actually explain the Grand Coven themselves before revealing them, this post would be perfect.
I usually make Coven Aus for the fandoms I’m in since I’m a massive dork. To be honest, the Duck Coven came from another AU I planned but...the idea was so good I decided to make it it’s own AU.The Grand Coven for the most part came out of nowhere with a question, How do I raise the stakes, and how will this end? Thus the conception of an unstoppable force that changes a kind of lighthearted au.The Grand Coven are made up of people who want to either become gods, or just to see total annihilation of everything. They come from all walks of life and yes a few of them have backstories in this au.The different members are pulled from either the Ducktales 1987 cartoon or the Duck/Mouse Comics. I just googled half of these guys because I couldn’t find more magicians in Disney Canon to work with. If you guys have info or more pictures of the comic people please share them with meMerlock and Gene- Treasures of the Lost Lamp; 1990 Movie
