A love letter to the co-conspiritors

They have many names—beta reader, friend, Oh Fuck You—but you know who they are: they're the person who is as rabid as you about a ship or a character, the one you DM with your most twisted headcanons, the one who agrees that YES, he SHOULD be tied to a chair and slapped in the face—that she SHOULD be allowed a little tragic backstory, as a treat—that they SHOULD be roommates who are secretly pining for one another...the one who hashes out with you, at past midnight, how soon is reasonable for people with superpowers to have sex after one of them has been shot in the leg.

They’re the person who reads your fic before you send it to anyone else, and raves with you about that plot point that you COULDN’T WAIT for them to reach, or points out where you’ve forgotten that they were at the bar, not the library, so you need to remove the reference to book stacks, or pokes you to finish the goddamn next chapter because they want to read it, okay?

Fandom would not exist without them. They enable and encourage. Some of them are also fic writers, and you get to enable them right back. Some of them create fan art, or meta, or text post edits, or run prompt fests, or edit wikis...some of them are simply just as in love with the same thing that you are and want to feed the squee.

If you’re lucky enough to have someone like this in your life, you’ll know how much impact they have. It’s different to getting comments and kudos (wonderful though those are!), because they come in before the fic is finished, sometimes even before it’s started, and say ‘yes, do it!’. The fact that I've written so much for Community and The Umbrella Academy is completely down to @bethanyactually and @wheresmytowel respectively, and I count myself incredibly lucky to have them both in my life (and not just for all this, but also because they’re both incredibly lovely and smart and fun).

It was Fanfic Writer Appreciation Day yesterday (Aug 21st), and it made me think that we should also give a shoutout to the co-conspiritors, because without them, an awful lot more fic writers would be stress-scrolling through tumblr instead of working on their WIP, and there’d be so much less fic in the world.

Warm by @patternscolorsflowers - I made an Ao3 account for the sole purpose of bookmarking this as my very first favorite fic. A gorgeous one-shot of Joyce giving Eddie some much needed motherly TLC. I must’ve read this fic at least a dozen times, and cried every single time.

Disliking You Less by @claracivry - Claudia Henderson slowly learns to accept Dustin’s weird new metalhead friend. Just the sweetest, cutest fic!

Red and the Metalhead by @cunninghamschrissy - of course! The adorable fic that inspired me to write Not-so-iron Maiden! Max and Eddie as sibs have my heart forever.

Best we can do is to pick up the pieces by @hearjessroarfics - very, very sweet fic from Wayne’s POV as he observes Eddie and Chrissy in an unguarded moment.

Come True in the End by Many_Impossible_Things - absolutely BAMF Chrissy is tired of being underestimated, and comes back to life with a vengeance through the power of Pat Benatar. Seriously, read this one!!!

Take a chance on me by @womanof-1000-faces - Chrissy joins Hellfire. And it’s just as awesome as it sounds.

We’re not alone (I’ll find a new place to be from) by @grasslandgirl - Eddie learns to love Dustin’s hugs. Soooo cute.

Of All The Waffle Houses In The World by Babeinthewoods - a few unconventional wingmen (aka, the Party) help Eddie get a date with Chrissy, with lots of hilarious shenanigans along the way.

Eddie My Love by @ghostlynimbus - sweet little Hellcheer scene, and you’ll end up with the song stuck in your head for days.

Graceland, too. (Whatever she wants) by cunninghams - Eddie and Chrissy survive Vecna and then make a bucket list to take advantage of their new lease on life.

Five Drunks and a Cheerleader by @phoenixwrites - Chrissy goes to see Corroded Coffin at the Hideout. It sounds simple but it’s so.dang.cute and there’s a whole delightful series now!

That’s all I’ve got to say by @barriss - Eddie gets a little too emotional during movie night. Absolutely adorable.

The shop around the corner by @adelaideelaine - Hellcheer meets You’ve Got Mail with a little dash of tattoo parlor AU thrown in. One of my favorite ships plus one of my favorite movies? Heck yeah!

Have no fear (the monster’s gone) by JuliaRose12 - Heartmelting Wayne and Eddie fluff, as everyone’s favorite uncle looks after his beloved nephew in the hospital.

In Her Mercy Does All Abound by viharker - medieval troubadour AU. Nuff said, right? This one is so beautiful.

the buzz by @hangon-silvergirl - modern day Eddie as a chaotic DJ wooing Chrissy the Barista via music and text. Absolutely hilarious!

Come What May by @lokinightfury - Hellcheer starring in Grease? The entire Party and Corroded Coffin as wingmen? Yes please!!!

Wasted Years by @bratanimus - Eddie and the guys listen to a new album, as Eddie comes to terms with the past and prepares for his future. So introspective and beautiful, I cried so much reading this one. Really the entire Man to Man series is amazing!

The Kingdoms Never Weep by @sokkas-first-fangirl - Eddie’s estranged family tries to come back to haunt him, but the Party has his back. I love the gorgeous friendships in this fic and the whole series!

Guidance Counseling by @khaleesa - Eddie is determined to graduate, and slowly gets his life on track after surviving the Upside Down. I wanted to climb into this fic and live in it forever.

On the Other Side by @iwasateenagevirginiawoolf - One year after Vecna’s attack, Eddie and Chrissy are both learning to live again. Absolutely heartbreaking but so beautiful and optimistic at the same time.

Long is the Road out of Hell by @justhere4thevibez - Chrissy joins Hellfire, but this glorious fic comes with the added bonus of her escaping her mother, and the best Mike Wheeler I’ve ever read.

Family Recipe by @foxylibrarian - the cutest fake dating AU, Chrissy has Nancy, Robin, and Barb as her BFFs, and there’s lots of Wayne too. It’s everything you could want!

On My Terms by @pipergirl17 - Jason injuring Wayne in an accident doesn’t sound like the basis of a Hellcheer hospital meet-cute, but trust me, it works.

In the Shade of Aurelias by @pearlypairings - last but MOST CERTAINLY not least, is my favorite fic by my favorite author! A magical fantasy AU, with hints of D&D, mystery, intrigue, and romance. It was hard to choose just one from Pearly, because all of her works are amazing, but this fic is truly outstanding.

This goes out to all the people who take time out of their day to write and give us readers a piece of their soul when they share their fic with us. All the writers who write long fics, multi chaps, one shots, drabbles, thirsts, or simply day dream What Could Be with the characters they love and promise to put dream to paper one day. My favourite MFMM fic of all time is The God Abandons Antony by counterfog - it's 16k of Porn With Philosophy, flush with literary references and one of the finest character portraits of Jack and Phryne I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I'm going to leave my favourite paragraph from this fic here:

It was wrong, too, come to think of it, to believe any person was less than a casing for an invisible city—peopled by riddles, inconsistencies, and whims, selves lost and selves found—a city governed by habit and in all things rich with secret ways and means. He thought of the city he was and the city he had met in her. He thought, too, of that other city they had got to in the night. He didn’t know that it could be reached again, not for certain. But he knew where it was now—and that it was—and he thought he might find his way again when he needed to, if he asked her, if she remembered.

Every Day's Most Quiet Need by tiltedsyllogism

A really underrated Mac/Phryne/Jack triangle that evolves into a polycule - this author has such an unerring ear for the language of the era, plus I deeply appreciate the Mac & Jack friendship here and how they come to share their adoration/exasperation for Phryne.

Lavender-Multiverse - Vol 1 - Previous Post | Home | Next Post

Lavender Clouds was the first story I ever finished, and it took four years. It was built on the basic premise that I thought Hinata was underutilized and thought it would be interesting if she ran away from her oppressive home life and was picked up by the Akatsuki. Writing her sweet personality in contrast to all these colorful criminals is what I live for, and because she had so many friendships with so many characters in this story, it is the main culprit for my Hinata-multi-ship world and list of Akatsuki x Hinata WIPs waiting for me. (>.> coming soon)

For those who read it in the old days, Lavender Clouds used to be 144 chapters and over 260k words. (Now 69 chapters and 135k) It underwent a severe rework in early 2023 because my early work had a lot of repeating an entire thought process in multiple chapters and having characters think paragraphs right before having conversations about the same damn thing (and also, the cringe first chapter had been haunting me for years). Updating the chapters on ff.net was a nightmare, and I never want to do it again, but knowing me, I will~.

Lavender Clouds was actually meant to be longer because I don’t know when to stop, but after 4 years, I was tired and just wrote the happy ending.

Does anyone remember when Hinata used to stutter in every line? You don’t want to know how long that took me to take out of 144 chapters back in the day when I decided it was cringe.

In 2016, I was afraid to make it the pairing I initially wanted. If I had done it today, it would have a Sasori x Hinata, not a Sasuke x Hinata, because of the pure SasoHina chemistry, but don’t worry, one of those is coming soon.

good morning, y’all. today i present some fic recs to celebrate a few of my fave authors & their work. you may notice i basically took all the prompts from this post for last year and just snagged a fic for as many as i could because i was too lazy to come up with prompts of my own.

a huge huge thank you to each one of these writers. i know your work often goes under appreciated or unnoticed, but i hope this is a reminder that it is truly loved and some of us do recognize the hard work you put in to what you do. <3

all recs below the cut for length. i’ve linked to the author’s tumblr when available, but a few of these come straight from AO3. i also tried to include ratings and major warnings for each entry, but pls be mindful to check the author’s tags in case i missed anything.

otp - listen. aside from me/kakashi, i don’t have much of an otp to offer you. so i’m going to cheat a little and recommend all the lovers’ gifts by @depressedhatakekakashi. taryn wrote a really cute little fic here that showers kakashi with all the love he deserves from a number of different folks. a perfect example of “dis cute i like it.” (kakashi-centric, kakashimulti, rated G)

angst - @kakashiswilloffire takes the angst crown again and this time i am here to recommend their series dysthymia, which deals with a number of heavy topics surrounding kakashi’s ongoing struggles with depression. there’s a variety of tws for this series, but ari is diligent about including them for every entry. each chapter can certainly be read as a stand-alone, so don’t be afraid to skip any that might be too much for you. i think this is a wonderful character study of my fave & i’m so glad ari has decided to share it with us. <3 (kakashi-centric, rated M, angst, depression, self-harm)

slice of life - i’m never really sure what counts as “slice of life” and what doesn’t, but i’m here to rec a kakagai fic that i believe i read after i saw it spoken about on taryn’s page, tho i’m not 100% sure about that. unsent letters is sort of a slice of life in that it shows slices of kakashi’s life throughout the years in the form of letters he wrote to gai in case of his death. it’s a swift gut punch with a happy ending, 11/10. the author is on tumblr under @/listles but i’ve never interacted with them so gonna chicken out of a tag. (kakagai, rated G, tw death mention)

gen - gonna hop out on a bit of a limb and rec broken things by @/mallml on ao3. this artist makes some of (imo) the most provocative kakashi-centric art i’ve ever seen, and to get a glimpse behind the curtain to some of the thought process that goes into it is really fascinating. these are ideas that never made it into comic form and they vary in tone, so be mindful. it also includes the records clerk, which is a really nice little two-chapter reader-insert. (kakashi-centric, rated G but tw for blood, death, and some other dark stuff, so mind the chapter tags & warnings)

domestic - a flame in the night by ryelined on ao3 is a cute little fluffy one-shot that put a big smile on my face when i really needed it. (there is a tumblr with this username, but it hasn’t been active in about three years, so i’m not going to tag it; they do have a twitter under the same, name, though, if you have a twitter!) kakashi comes home to his partner to celebrate their birthday. there is teasing & snuggling. sometimes that’s all you need. (kakashi/gn!reader, rated G)

pre-canon - what is funny about anjelle’s paper skin is i actually don’t remember how i found it. i just went into my history one day and there it was and i had no recollection of ever running across it before. but i started reading and i’m only a couple chapters in but i’m hooked. it is heart-wrenching, gut-punching thus far. y’all, this is the sakumo redemption/dad fic we all deserve in our lives. (sakumo-centric, rated T, body modification, body sharing)

crossover - sorry y’all i don’t really read crossover fics so i’ve got nothing

fluff - this one is a little more bittersweet than straight fluff, but i am a sucker for kakashi & sakumo fics, so we are gonna roll with it anyway. per noi due soli by loserboys on ao3 is a lovely little one-shot about an afternoon when kakashi plays the one role he never really seemed to take to very well; vulnerable child. i love this and the melancholic tone of kakashi looking back upon this seemingly innocuous day that, upon reflection, is actually so very important. (kid!kashi, rated T)

missing scene - sorry y’all i couldn’t think of one for this and i’m too tired to keep trying. better luck next year (or better yet, rec me one if you have it).

au - the forest cat cafe by @historicfailure. now, listen, you’ve probably heard me sing the praises of build a close connection before and YEAH I AM STILL BEHIND on fcc, but did you know they exist within the same universe? and did you know there is going to eventually be a third part that involves kakashi? yeah well i’m very excited about it, in case you can’t tell and also just in awe of this author’s ability to create so much consistently incredible content. this fic is long, but from what i’ve seen of it thus far, well worth your while. (yamato/fem!reader, rated E, modern/coffe shop au)

hurt/comfort - hanahaki is absolutely a guilty pleasure of mine and i snatch up most of the fics i find related to it. today i bring you one by @whatshernameis. hanahaki doesn’t always have a happy ending but thankfully for both mc and obito, this time it does. that doesn’t mean you’re not gonna go through hell first and hela does a great job of making the stakes painfully clear right from the start. (obito/fem!reader, rated G but tw for mentions of self-harm and blood)

holidays - happy birthday, yamato! (if yam’s bday isn’t considered a holiday already, it certainly should be.) @wind-becomes-lightning knocked it out of the park with this first birthday for everyone’s favorite tree man. tenzo. 10.8 is everything yamato deserves & then some; i legit cried when i read this because it’s so sweet. (pre-relationship kakayama, rated G)

under appreciated - right back to my girl nisi to recommend hymn for the missing. i was very late to this fic, but it was on my to-read list for a long long time because i knew nisi was especially proud of it and i wanted to check it out. i have to say, she has every reason to love this piece as much as she does and i think you will, too, if you give it a try. (kakashi-centric, rated G but tw for death and suicide mention)

post-canon - i will once more be suggesting you all read primaveral by @chemmerson here. this fic is ongoing (and slow going while em focuses on school and irl stuff, so be patient pls!) and is such a beautiful study of the shinobi system from the perspective of a medical professional trying to help reform healthcare post-war. (and yeah i’m calling this post-canon because i don’t read or watch boruto so there, lol.) (kakashi/fem!reader, rated T)

death - pain. that’s all this one is, honestly. just pain. @depressedhatakekakashi writes some of the best kakashi fanfiction in existence but what i sort of love about this one is it’s more from obito’s perspective, which is something we don’t see nearly as often. the crash was written for team minato week and it splinters our beloved trio just as brutally as canon does, if not more so. well worth the read if you’ve got a good tolerance for having your heart ripped out. (obito-centric, rated M, modern au, major character death)

prompted - from kakairu month last year and the very shinobi-appropriate prompt “laundry,” i’d like to recommend this very adorable little fic laundry day by @/dilly-oh. i’m sorry but kakashi washing his ninken’s vests with such precision and attention, plus iruka’s booty yoga shorts? this is just an adorable little one shot to make you laugh on a hot summer day. (kakairu, rated T)

found family - unfortunately, i don’t think cinfulwriter32 has a tumblr or anything else, so i can’t link to any of their socials directly. i can, however, link to their fic found in translation in which a reader from our world finds her bathroom door magically connected with kakashi’s apartment. it’s actually a premise i usually skip right over, but i’m glad i listened to the recommendations i received and gave this one a try. it’s a soulmate au, an adventure in asl, and isekai all wrapped into one big found family love fest. according to the author, there are only two chapters left as i write this (on 8/18), so you might as well catch up while you can. (kakashi/fem!reader, rated E, 18+ only, smut and tw for past sexual assault but as the story goes on it grows well beyond that)

travel - team seven and the terrible, horrible, no good very bad road trip by @/bougiebutchbitch. if you’ve only seen bbb’s art and missed this fic, you’re in for a treat. all the same humor and observation that goes into bougie’s comics and fanart can be found here and man does sakura get the badass makeover she deserves. team 7 as loving/dysfunctionl family is always a good time, and this one especially. (team 7 as fam, sakura-centric, rated T, warnings offered by chapter but early ones include some gore and references to torure)

free space - going to go wildly off-brand here to recommend spoken words by solas_oiche on ao3. tbh, this is the kind of shit that makes me want to quit writing for good because it’s just so beautifully written. like, i couldn’t pick a favorite line if i fucking tired (and i did try when i left a comment, lmao), there are so many beautiful pieces to it. this was rec’d by nisi to an anon (i think?) and i read it and have -700 regrets, it’s lovely. if gaalee is your thing, then i highly suggest you check it out. (gaalee, rated E, 18+ only, mutual pining, one rough sex scene, idiots in love)
