I've started making a little memory box from my PhD. It's not finished yet - I need to fasten things correctly and add in some structure - but so far it includes a postcard from the Inuit Studies Conference, a beautifully carved piece of caribou antler that I bought from an Igloolik artist, and a seal skull. . The seal material used in the experiments that were mentioned in Tuesday's poem all came from an animal that had died of natural causes. I had contacted the Pieterburen seal sanctuary to the north of Groningen to ask if they had any recently deceased seals, and received an affirmative. As they are a sanctuary, they receive a lot of sick or injured seals, and while many of them are able to be released back into the wild, there are unfortunately those who don't survive. I was therefore invited to attend the autopsy of two such individuals, and could then take whatever material I needed for my experiments. (I should say that this was only allowed because I had signed a scientific research declaration - they don't just allow anyone to come and get bits of dead seal...) . I therefore got the skins from two seals to use in my sewing experiments (the poem for that one will be shared next week) as well as the bones from one to use as the raw material for the different kinds of tools I needed for my PhD experiments. I did not need the skull for my experiments, but the vets very kindly let me take it, as they would have just thrown it out anyway, and so now it sits on my shelf as a memory to the creature without who I would not have been able to complete my PhD. . A bit of an odd post today, but I wanted to acknowledge that experimental archaeology is often a messy business. What's important is to approach the acquisition of raw materials from an ethical perspective, and respect the animals who donated them. . #ExperimentalArchaeology #ArchaeologyLife #ArchaeologyLovers #ArchaeologistsOfInstagram #archaeology #archaeologist #PhD #PhdLife #skull #ArcticArchaeology https://www.instagram.com/p/CqZsCghqhKo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Our latest project: Tracing the Potter's Wheel
The Tracing the Potter's Wheel exhibit is our first blended exhibit - you can visit at the Allard Pierson in Amsterdam at their ArcheoHotspot (until 6 November!!), and you can play complementary games on our itch.io page - everything's in Dutch and English, (presto in italiano)!
We're really proud of these little games, they gave us opportunities that aren't possible in a museum exhibit. I've talked about the relationship between the displays and the games in the blog post linked above. It's an exhibit curated by archaeologists to share how we do research, so if that's up your alley then it's worth a peek.
If you're in Amsterdam during museumnacht (November 5!) come by and chat - I'll be there along with the other archaeologists who put the exhibit together! We'd love to chat with you between the cocktails and the live music ;)

It's September 14th. 🇷🇺 On this day in 1812, the Great Fire of Moscow began. The Russians evacuated the city and set it ablaze in order to reduce its capture by the approaching French Emperor Napoléon Bonaparte and his Grande Armée from what was to be a glorious victory to a hollow one. The fire burned for five days and reduced 3/4 of Moscow's buildings to ashes.
Earlier in the year, Napoléon launched his invasion of Russia with 400,000 to 450,000 men. He used scorched-earth tactics to frighten the Russians into submission, but the Russians weren't intimidated. Battles and skirmishes had whittled the Grande Armée down to 108,000 men by the time they entered Moscow on this day. The French cavalry had been nearly wiped out.
Napoléon waited in Moscow for a peace offer from Tsar Alexander I. After five weeks, Napoléon and his Grande Armée finally left Moscow – with no peace offer, no food, little ammunition, and few weapons and supplies. The French military position collapsed as the Grande Armée struggled on toward further disaster. With horses exhausted or dead, commanders redirected cavalrymen into infantry units, leaving French forces helpless against Cossack fighters. The Russians were able to easily force the Grande Armée to retreat along the same route they had earlier scorched. The French were forced to eat their remaining horses to survive. Napoléon himself made it back to France, but little of his Grande Armée did. Napoléon's final defeat came three years later at Waterloo. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Repost @chris.daes ... Reenactment is the best hobby for families. Why? Well, it's very simple really, you get tons of exercice and fresh air and you learn so much about human history. No TV, no Internet nothing to stress about. Only good friends having a good time. Plus, kids look so darn cute in medieval attire 😁 . What are your thoughts on this matter? . #reenactor #reenactorsofinstagram #reenactorlife #livinghistory #history #historicalclothing #vikingclothing #historicalreenactment #ironage #experimentalarchaeology #oldnorse #vikingage #mittelalter #hobby #nordmann #mittelalterreenactment #norsereenactment #norse #wikinger #snow #funwithhistory #selbstgenäht #handmade #algizrune #familytime #qualitytime #medievalmarket #vikingmarket #wearefamily #throwbackthursday https://www.instagram.com/p/CNaexwLHFXo/?igshid=156az1ejg21k0

Only one week to go until the first in an exciting new series that I’ve been helping to organise by Kulturo Media (who amongst other things, run the wonderful @archpodnet who produce my podcast "Tea-break Time Travel”): Kulturo Share. . In this first instalment of Kulturo Share, we’ll be talking all about experimental archaeology. To introduce us to the diversity of this topic, we have three fabulous guest speakers: . Thomas Keyes (@thomaskeyesartist ) is an Scotland-based artist who specialises in the reconstruction of insular manuscripts and their material components. He'll be talking about his current kickstarter project "Making the Book of Kells", in which he aims to recreate one of the iconic pages from the Book of Kells, starting completely from scratch and using only authentic materials and methods. . Aaron Deter-Wolf (@archaeologyink ) is the Prehistoric Archaeologist for the Tennessee Division of Archaeology in Nashville. He'll be talking about his work and experience in ancient tattooing, in particular a recent project undertaken alongside professional tattoo artists to compare the physical characteristics of tattoos using different pre-modern tools and methods. . Dr Anita Radini (@anitaradini ) is the archaeological science and engagement officer at the Centre for Experimental Archaeology and Material Culture (CEAMC) at UCD (@ucd_experimental_archaeology ). She'll be talking about her projects and the work currently being done at the CEAMC. . This event is free if you attend live (make sure to register through the link in my stories, or look up "Kulturo Media" on the web). If you miss it, members of the Archaeology Podcast Network can re-watch whenever they want (to become a member, check out @archpodnet ). . #archaeology #ArchaeologyLovers #ExperimentalArchaeology #ArchaeologistsOfInstagram #tattooing #AncientTattooing #BookOfKells #liveevent #onlineevent https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck5PnuxKsUL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today we’re sharing a sneak peek at the Trace Explorer, a part of the Tracing the Potter’s Wheel exhibition at the @allardpierson! For this mini game, we’re inviting you to step into the shoes of the archaeologist. Can you identify what traces are on each of the pots? Image details: 1 - The main menu of the game. Here you’ll find yourself in an archaeological lab, surrounded by sherd-filled crates. Your task is to study each of the pots on the table and record the traces you see on them. It seems pretty intimidating, but in the game you’ll find the tools you need to succeed. 2 - The Glossary, where the traces are explained in detail. You can see detail images there of what traces look like, highlighted to make identification easier. The description covers the shape of the trace as well as what might have caused it. 3 – Inspecting a pot. After selecting a pot from the table, you can study it by rotating it and switching between normal light and UV light to give some helpful hints! When you see traces, select them from the console to compile your report. This will be reviewed and scored by your digital supervisor! This mini game, along with the others, will be released on 1 October at the Allard Pierson’s ArcheoHotSpot and online. If you’re in Amsterdam in October, come have a look! If you’re not, we’ll be sharing links so you can play along in the digital exhibition. #immersiveheritage #playthepast #goingdigital #allardpierson #temporaryexhibition #interactivedisplay #museumathome #gamedev #minigame #devlog #heritageexplained #archaeologyexplained #experimentalarchaeology #madewithgodot #godot #b3d #wip (at Amsterdam, Netherlands) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiNi1Y6qUJ5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Repost @chris.daes ... This is take 3281. Or at least it feels like it. 😅 . Having your photograph taken where you have to look serious isn't easy. At all. And it doesn't help when your wife keeps telling you "Keep a straight face!" "Do not laugh!" "Why the heck are you smiling!" and then she starts giggling herself...🙈 . Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that being in full fighting attire makes me somewhat excited....almost like a dog when you flash a ball 😂 . Do you know that feeling? . #reenactor #reenactorsofinstagram #reenactorlife #livinghistory #history #historicalclothing #vikingclothing #historicalreenactment #ironage #experimentalarchaeology #oldnorse #vikingage #mittelalter #hobby #nordmann #mittelalterreenactment #norsereenactment #norse #wikinger #helmet #helm #funwithhistory #selbstgenäht #handmade #ubosdreki #readyforbattle #wikingerhelm #shield #sword #schwert https://www.instagram.com/p/CTm95JytOXW/?utm_medium=tumblr

My Viking garment patterns so far for guidance on how to make them: on my top right are the Hedeby/Haithabu/Kievan Rus’ pants (waistband; lower legs [both short and long]; front and back crotch gussets; and baggy upper legs) and the Viborg shirt (folded top [including for lining]; front and back aprons; square sleeve gussets; and sleeves). As for the Viborg shirt, it was initially difficult to measure the pattern; but I got it down eventually through cms. The Hedeby/Rus’ pants were easier to draft, though. #vikings #vikingreenactment #viborgshirt #vikingcosplay #experimentalarchaeology #vikinggarments #hedebypants #NordicIronAge #livinghistory #vikingpants #vikingtid #vikingage https://www.instagram.com/p/B_DBaVHFncT/?igshid=w61lzutf02wl
