LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
September 7, 2021
Heather Cox Richardson
Early in the wake of Trump’s presidency, Republican Party lawmakers facing upcoming elections appear to have made the calculation that radicalized Trump voters were vital to their political futures. They seemed to worry that they needed to protect themselves against primary candidates from the right, since primaries are famous for bringing out the strongest partisans. If they could win their primaries, though, they could rely on tradition, gerrymandering, and voter suppression to keep them in office.
So Republicans tried to bury the January 6 insurrection and former president Trump’s role in it. Although both Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called attention to Trump’s responsibility for the attack immediately after it happened, they voted to acquit him of the charge of “incitement of insurrection” placed by the House of Representatives, and either to echo or not to oppose the accusation that the 2020 election was fraudulent.
Republican governors like Greg Abbott in Texas and Ron DeSantis in Florida, both of whom appear to have presidential ambitions, along with Kristi Noem in South Dakota, took strong stands against immigrants who they insisted were invading the country, masks that they claimed were stifling children, and now, in Texas (but soon to spread), against abortion. At the same time, Republican-dominated states dramatically restricted the right to vote.
This calculation is hardly a secret. In Washington state, two Trump-type candidates have recently challenged the popular Republican incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler, who voted for the former president’s impeachment. Trump has endorsed one of them, and Florida Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, a Trump loyalist, traveled there this weekend to boost that candidate's campaign.
Republicans in Texas have swung hard right to rally their white base in a state that is now majority minority. The governor recently directed state police to arrest immigrants believed to have come to America illegally. The Republican legislature has passed, and the Republican governor has signed, a draconian abortion law empowering neighbors to collect $10,000 if they win a lawsuit against anyone who “abets” an abortion after six weeks, before most people know they’re pregnant; a strong voter suppression bill; and a law that permits people to carry guns without a permit.
Democratic state Representative Ron Reynolds, vice chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, told the AP’s Will Weissert and Paul J. Weber: “They have to entertain and they have to appease because these are the people that are excited about voting in Republican primaries.”
But the Republicans' move right was always a political gamble. The fact that politics is getting so frantic suggests it is a gamble they are afraid they are losing.
Far from disappearing, the events of January 6 loom larger every day. On September 4, Jacob Chansley, who then called himself “QAnon Shaman” and was seen in the Senate Chamber on January 6, shirtless, painted, wearing a horned helmet, and carrying a flagpole topped with a spear, pleaded guilty to a felony. He could face 41 to 51 months in prison. He is one of 600 charged so far in the insurrection. Like others, he claimed he believed Trump had called him to the Capitol that day.
Some Republican lawmakers might be looking at Chansley’s four or so years in prison and getting nervous as they might face their own day of reckoning.
Senate Republicans filibustered the creation of a bipartisan commission to investigate the events of January 6, so the House created a select committee instead. McCarthy tried to sabotage the select committee by adding to it two representatives who had already declared their opposition to it; then, when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi rejected them, McCarthy withdrew all the Republicans from the committee and refused to participate in it, clearly hoping to discredit its work as a partisan hit job. But Pelosi invited anti-Trump Republican representatives Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) to participate in the committee, and they agreed. As of September 2, Cheney is now the committee’s vice-chair.
The committee has asked a wide variety of sources for a wide variety of records, prompting what certainly looks like concern from lawmakers who worked closely with the former president. When the select committee asked telecommunications companies to preserve the phone records of certain members of Congress, as well as the former president and members of his family, the lawmakers in question strongly opposed the committee’s request.
McCarthy claimed that any company turning over private information was “in violation of federal law and subject to losing their ability to operate in the United States,” although experts say there is no law that stops companies from complying with a subpoena (and, of course, Republicans demanded—and received—Hillary Clinton’s private data in 2016). McCarthy seemed to issue a threat when he said: “If companies still choose to violate federal law, a Republican majority will not forget and will stand with Americans to hold them fully accountable under the law.”
Eleven House Republicans wrote a letter to Yahoo (mistakenly addressing it to a CEO who left the company in 2017) warning that “the undersigned do not consent to the release of confidential call records or data,” claiming that “your company has a legal obligation to protect the data of your subscribers and customers,” and threatening that “[i]f you fail to comply with these obligations, we will pursue all legal remedies.”
The eleven lawmakers signing the letter were those most closely associated with Trump: Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Scott Perry (R-PA), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Jodie Hice (R-GA), Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Madison Cawthorn (R-NC), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Jim Banks (R-IN), who seems to have aims for higher office.
Greene warned that any company complying with the committee’s request would be “shut down.”
McCarthy also claimed that the Department of Justice had said Trump did not cause, incite, or provoke the violence on January 6. This prompted select committee chair Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Vice-Chair Cheney to issue a statement “on McCarthy’s January 6th misinformation campaign,” calling “reports of such a conclusion… baseless.”
The anti-government anti-mask movement also probably seemed like a better idea before the Delta variant hit. Governors like Abbott and DeSantis have doubled down on opposing mask mandates: DeSantis has gone so far as to use the government to prevent private businesses from requiring masks and to block local officials from requiring masks in schools.
But mask mandates are widely popular, and as hospitalizations and deaths spike among the unvaccinated, popular opinion is turning against anti-maskers. The area around Miami, Florida, has seen the deaths of at least 13 school staff from Covid-19; hospitalizations of children are rising; and north Idaho has begun to ration medical care; Covid hospitalizations on Labor Day 2021 were 61,000 higher than they were a year ago (99,000 versus 38,000), and health care workers are exhausted. Doctors are beginning to push back against the anti-maskers, while school boards in Florida are defying DeSantis’s ban and Texas schools are challenging Abbott’s rule in court.
While Trump-reflecting lawmakers are demanding Americans put their lives, and their children’s lives, on the line for “freedom,” news broke tonight that Trump and his son Don, Jr., will spend the night of September 11, 2021, the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, commenting on a "gamecast" of a boxing match between former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (who stepped in when Oscar De La Hoya tested positive for Covid) and Vitor Belfort at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida. "I love great fighters and great fights," Trump said. "You won't want to miss this special event..."—which can be purchased for $49.99.

WELCOME AMY, YOU’VE BEEN ACCEPTED FOR THE ROLE OF DAHLIA GREENGRASS
Admins Note: Perhaps one of the hardest decisions of the night seeing as so many talented and wonderful applicants vied for Dahlia’s role! I’ve struggled between two in particular! But what I found so entrancing within your application was the subtle nuances of Dahlia’s quiet rebellion, the struggles she faces with her siblings flaws as well as her own. Her cowardice being subtly woven under layers while still striving to escape the chains she’s been shackled in. It is these things that ticking beneath the surface waiting to explode that really painted a portrait of who Dahlia, left me intrigued and wondering, I can’t wait to see what she shall become. Your faceclaim request to use Zoe Barnard has been approved. Congratulations on your acceptance again, please make sure to head your way to the checklist and submit your account within the next 24 hours!
OUT OF CHARACTER
Name / Alias: amy Pronouns: she/her Age: 20 Timezone: pst
IN CHARACTER APPLICATION
Full Name: Dahlia Maeve Greengrass—and they called her Dahl for short, her family did. Was it by sheer coincidence that it sounded like Darl, short for Darling, their little angel, their little captive? Sexuality: Dahlia had never been a wallflower when it came to matters of the heart. Her family prohibited her from committing the ultimate crime—relations with a Muggleborn—but aside from that Dahlia was always enamoured with people and prizes of every make and design. As such, I’d describe Dahlia as pansexual, panromantic. Gender/Pronouns: cisfemale, she/her. Hogwarts House: The Sorting Hat was always fond of saying things with the utmost vagueness, such as ‘lots of potential here, my dear’, or ‘you could do great things in any House, you know’. But for Dahlia Greengrass, the Hat would be decisive. She was much too cowardly for Gryffindor (her family was proof of that), much too silly for Ravenclaw (her temperance was proof of that) and she would not have known Hufflepuff’s humility if it had marched up and bit her on the nose. And, to be quite fair, Slytherin was not altogether a bad house. Dahlia’s whole family had gone there, bar a Ravenclaw relative or two, and there was nothing more comforting (particularly to an eleven year old) than the familiarity in following old footsteps down a well-worn path. The Hat shouted SLYTHERIN! a mere thirty seconds after the brim touched her hair, and little Dahlia Greengrass went off (quite happily, I might add) to a hollering table, with the distinct knowledge that her family would be very pleased with her.
Head canons:
“I KISSED EACH BULLET, SIMPLY BECAUSE I LOVED THE PERSON THAT WAS HOLDING THE GUN.” — Donte Collins
Klaus Graves was, in a very certain and predictable manner, dearly beloved in the Greengrass household. How pleased Dahlia’s parents were when they learned of the matter, always inviting him over for tea and banquets. Father liked his reputable wealth and status; Mother adored the way he brought dahlias over on every house visit, like clockwork, like it wasn’t a symbol (freshly watered and placed in an ornate vase) that he owned her daughter’s heart. Velda thought he was very handsome and even Ernest had little to say about the whole affair, as he was often wont to do. And, while all of this was inexplicably true, none of these qualities would much have mattered if he wasn’t of a suitable blood status. As it was, he was welcomed into the Greengrass family and encouraged into Dahlia’s heart, and, in the eyes of Dahlia’s family, that would be that. The end all of everything. A resolution for their pretty little girl, tied up with a handsome bow. But there was something about Klaus that made Dahlia a little bit drunk when she was with him, something that couldn’t make her see straight. With him, Dahlia felt impossibly, awfully small in her love—although she would not come to realise this until later, when craving Evander left her light on her feet; left her feeling like she could do anything, everything, the impossible. That, of course, was a dangerous feeling. But Evander Lupin was another matter entirely, and besides the point. For when Klaus left, her family mourned. Dahlia mourned drinks at the club and dancing until morning. She did not miss him, she was quick to say. She was afraid to convince herself otherwise. She was frightened at what might happen if he deigned to return (which he would), and if she let him (which she would).
“WHERE IS YOUR HEART, GIRL? YOU WERE THROWN TO THE WOLVES, AND NOW YOU ARE ONE.” — Unknown
Ernest and Velda Greengrass were Dahlia’s guardian angels, and nobody ever dared to suggest otherwise. Dahlia was the littlest, which translated—in Greengrass terms at least—to the weakest, the most delicate. Something to be protected. Admired, certainly, but at a respectable distance. Ernest excelled, as far as elder brothers go. He held her hand in large crowds, and sat with her on the Hogwarts Express until she grew old enough to be embarrassed of him. Velda played older, silly sister equally brilliantly. She dolled Dahlia up and took her out dancing; she indulged her in petty gossip and brought her the latest robes for her birthday. They were good at playing protectors. But late at night, when the manor was all asleep, Dahlia would hear them talking over whiskey. We mustn’t tell Dahlia this, and We’ll write to him on her behalf. It was in the little things, like how Velda told her which suitors to like, and how Ernest never let her smoke (although that never stopped her). When, exactly, had her guardian angels become prison guards? And when, exactly, had she committed a crime worth imprisonment?
“GOD, IS THIS ALL IT IS, THE RICOCHETING DOWN THE CORRIDOR OF LAUGHTER AND TEARS? OF SELF WORSHIP AND SELF LOATHING? OF GLORY AND DISGUST?”  — Sylvia Plath
America was all the latest fashion. The Abbott brothers had gone over last summer, and Dahlia’s aunts had come back gushing about the dancing, and the accents, and the fashion. The Prophet had posted an article declaring New York City as “A Must-See For Any Socialite”. Dahlia, who grew tired of the faded greys of England, of watching her every word and following Ernest’s detailed expectations, went out and dusted off the leather suitcase under the bed. Ernest and Father worried so, but Mother was all aflutter at the handsome prospects abroad - and Mother was awful persuasive when she wanted to be. Naively, Dahlia thought America would be different. New York City was the city of dreams - and it was also where hopes went to die. Blood supremacy was the same everywhere, it seemed. Cruelty was a universal language, founded in the arms of the Pride Society. Still, there was a certain liberty Dahlia had never really afforded before. Out here, her jail seemed brighter, wider, the locks a little looser, her diamond handcuffs jingling a little quieter. Just another pretty, petty face in the crowd. And, one day, New York would be the hearth that kept her embers glowing and stoked the flame. She was quite sure of it, if only she could find a lighter.
“BELIEVE YOUR HEART, YOUR MIND, AND YOUR DELUDED MORALS.“ — Song of Achillies
Dahlia Greengrass was a woman of many talents - but there were very few she came by honestly. As a little girl, the Greengrasses indulged in all sort of tutoring, just like they always had and always would. Ballroom dancing, perfect table etiquette. A little bit of painting, piano lessons, memorising trustworthy pureblood families. Fluent French and a touch of Latin on the side. The Greengrasses covered every superficial art under the sun (or at least, they tried to). Dahlia was good with languages, dancing, telling real jewels from fake. But she was mediocre at the piano, awful at the flute, she always picked up the dessert fork first and she always thought the (rumoured to be) disowned members of pureblood families looked the most interesting to talk to. But anything could be learned in time - and as the owners of Dahlia’s stopwatch, the Greengrasses could dedicate all the time in the world to mending her flaws. But for all they smoothed over her jagged edges, they forgot to fill in the fundamental cracks; deep-rooted, unshakable. They locked her flaws (or what they perceived as flaws, anyway) in a gilded cage and did away with the key - her cowardice, her willingness to ask questions. Quiet rebellion, a need to look twice. But they could never drown the hope. And as long as she had that, she could have anything. As long as she had that, she would never be the perfect daughter, and no amount of tutoring could prove otherwise.
In Character Paragraph:
Mother liked to throw the ritziest of all parties. There was always ludicrous amounts of smuggled liquor, raucous music enchanted from the record spinner, lust so thick and tangible one might even be able to taste it if they dared open their mouth. Greengrass parties had always been a luxurious affair, and August 12th was certainly no exception. It was, like all the parties before it, and all the ones that were to come, what the Pride Society would have called an affair to remember.
But for Dahlia Greengrass, who had been afforded these parties for as long as she could remember (and possibly a great deal before that), the parties had kept that ritz, but lost the thrill of something new.
She nursed a wide-brimmed champagne glass between her slender fingers, observing the scene with quiet trepidation. Anyone who knew her—really knew her, beyond the glittering dresses and priceless head pieces, beyond the bubble of innocence her family had cultivated for her—could have seen it. Heloise could have seen it, Dahlia thought, and Evander too. But her own brother sidled up with a glass of his very own, and saw only boredom.
“It’ll be over soon, Dahl,” he assured her. His gaze fell on her other hand, which cradled a cigarette, rim smudged red with smeared lipstick, and his expression took on something that was not quite a frown, but a look she was very familiar with nonetheless. “You aren’t smoking, are you?”
“Should it matter if I was?” she replied absently. Out dancing, she could see the people she’d known her whole life, bathed in new light. Sweet old Mrs. Krasinski from across the road, who liked to regale the Greengrass girls with stories of her youth. She’d been involved in the mysterious disappearance of her nephew’s squib daughter. And handsome Mr. Baudelaire, who was always perfectly charming and extraordinarily nice, was speculated to have caused that Muggle automobile accident not too far back. The Abbott family, with their sweet little twins and their pretty estate garden. Their meddling fingers in politics had made the Daily Prophet the other day. They were not any different people than they’d always been. In fact, they were exactly the same. Consistency was not their flaw, but blindness was Dahlia’s, and under a new truth, nothing quite seemed the same anymore, nor would it ever again.
“Dahlia,” said Ernest, this time with a bite of impatience. “Don’t work yourself into a tizzy. Mother would faint if she saw you with that.” His finger twitched, and Dahlia realised, all in that instant, that he expected her to hand over the cigarette. There was no hesitance in his mind. No universe in which Dahlia would not give up the cigar. He might as well have reached over and snatched the smoke himself.
Dahlia’s hand twitched too, moving infinitesimally up, towards her lips. The problem was, she thought, nobody was devoid of flaws. Velda was brainwashed. Ernest had delusions of grandeur, everyone partook in the mistreatment of house elves, and Dahlia was a coward. A blind coward. Only, blindness could be cured, if only you stuck with the right sort of people, and she could see the truth as well as anyone else now.
But the cowardice. Cowardice ran deep. It always does. Almost always incurable, and most definitely, precisely fatal. Dahlia Greengrass was, perhaps, nobler than those she kept in company with, and that inspired a certain kind of hope. But cowardice was the sort of thing that doomed a girl. Cowardice was the sort of thing that stuck around.
“Dahlia,” warned Ernest. Cowardice, thought Dahlia. And she did not take a drag of smoke.
Instead, she handed over the cigarette, and said, “Don’t tell Mother.”
Extras: My inspiration for this interpretation of Dahlia came from a few known characters. She reminds me of Andromeda Black, except perhaps not as shrewd or brave, not quite so end-all for love. I was also inspired by Susan Pevensie (Narnia), who is the most sensible of her siblings, and is perceived as silly for caring about boys and lipsticks and nylons, and as punishment has her whole family taken from her for following her own beliefs. Other honourable mentions include Wendy Darling (growing up and out of fairytales), Nina Zenik, and Blair Waldorf (spoiled daughter, vindictive and protected). You can also find her Pinterest here.

OCTAVIA ROWLE ♦︎ GRYFFINDOR ALUMNA ♦︎ NEUTRAL ♦︎ FC: STELLA MAEVE ♦︎ TAKEN
B I O G R A P H Y :
Octavia Rhinnaon Rowle, born December 2nd 1956, came into this world unexpectedly. In every sense of the idea her timing had just been wrong. She had been born six weeks early to Damocles Rowle and his wife, Eliza. Their son, Nikolai, was already seven. The couple was had been satisfied in the family they had. Neither parent was particularly interested in parenting, so having a son first felt like a blessing. Suddenly, there was a rather energetic and obnoxious addition into their family unit. Octavia came into the world with a vibrancy she inherited from no one. Damocles held a nature true to his namesake. A power-hungry brute with an arrogantly sophisticated mask. Eliza was not so violent as her husband, more interested in appearances of the family than actually participating in the family. Nikolai had been a rather quiet boy, and always had been. Octavia’s birth had disrupted the peace of the whole family. With the bulk of her parent’s focus on Nikolai, Octavia’s early years were spent mostly on her own. She spent more of her time causing mayhem for the house elves and avoiding her parent’s lessons. A task that proved fairly simple, especially when her mother had gotten tired of chasing her around the manor. She had more interest in a dress up doll than a daughter. When Octavia proved difficult, Eliza had no interest in mothering her.
The only person who proved to bring Octavia any joy was Nikolai. He certainly couldn’t keep up with her but he entertained her antics. He was never an affectionate older brother, even from a young age when affection seemed to be all Octavia craved. Despite that, the two had a quiet understanding and bond that no one around them could quite explain. It wasn’t love, not really, but a mutual understanding of one another. Plus, they each found the other amusing, at the very least. Nikolai spent his time training, learning, and becoming the heir he was expected to be. Spending time with Octavia was like a stress relief. Plus, she often found a way to either injure herself or someone else in her antics, and that always proved interesting. In return, Octavia had someone to perform for. From a young age, she always craved attention and feed off other people’s reactions. Typically, that meant eye rolling and huffs of laughter as she managed to make a fool of herself.
When Octavia ran out of energy for the day, she read. A habit she picked up from Nikolai. Immersing herself in book after book, she learned to create her own world. An escape from the lifeless household she had grown up. Knowledge, however, did not always turn out to be power. The more she learned, the more she became aware of the world around her.  Her outbursts got less childish, and more dangerous as she questioned the morals of purity that had been a cornerstone of her family’s values. These outbursts earned her a little more attention than she had realized and suddenly her father paid a little more attention. Her brother urged her at all points to watch her mouth, often chastising her before their parents could. A wedge started to drive between the two as she raised more questions.
Hogwarts provided her with relief she never thought possible. The doors opened wide for her to explore herself. While being placed among the lions caused more drama at home, included a very stern letter from her father the Gryffindor tower became her escape. Her father had no power here and Nikolai, the only link to their home, was far off in the Slytherin dorms. Octavia fit in surprisingly well with her classmates. The worry of the first day of school paled in comparison to the things she already worried about and she thrived under the lack of pressure. Her vivacious nature made her a hit of the common room even at eleven. She shared a dorm, a common room, and classes with a diverse group of kids. Muggleborns and halfbloods among them, Octavia’s quiet whispers of doubt turned into true doubts. Ones that started to keep her up at night as she learned they weren’t so different than her.
School became simple. She had never made it the top the class but she knew exactly how much work she had to do to get by without causing any trouble. That freedom allowed her time to explore herself. Octavia became noted among her house as the life of the party. Smuggling firewhiskey to any occasion, she never let silly things like exams or classes stop her from having a good time. Or at least, entertaining the entire common room. She started drinking early, her fourth year, and learned quickly that it dulled the doubts that had formed at home. Partying had become a coping mechanism for her. No one asked if she had been struggling at home when she always seemed so happy.  Plus, she found she quite enjoyed being the center of attention. Everyone looked at her with either admiration, or annoyance. Either way, it meant she had made an effect on them and she enjoyed leaving an impression that made people second glance when she walked by. Life had started to settle and the anxieties of her home life started to pale in comparison to the opportunities that awaited her at Hogwarts.
Unfortunately, that bubble of opportunity burst. Halfway through her fourth year, Nikolai had gotten into a nasty duel and lost his life. No one ever truly explained to Octavia what he had been dueling for but she had her suspicions. There was very little doubt in her mind that her brother hadn’t walked in her father’s footsteps. Before Octavia could truly even process or start to grieve, a newfound set of responsibilities had landed in her lap. Suddenly the Rowle family name rested on her shoulder. Nikolai had always carried the burden of maintaining the Rowle reputation. Octavia wasn’t prepared for this task and it sent her into a spiral. She never had a moment to truly recognize the lost she had faced as her world turned upside down. Her father started to use every moment she spent back home to make up for lost time. Tutors, duel masters, and suitors started to become a prominent part of her life. Luckily at school, the party reputation she had cultivated served as the perfect cover to drink herself into oblivion.
Graduation day loomed over her throughout her seventh year. She dived more and more into herself, putting on a brave show for her friends while she dreaded the moment she lost her sanctuary of Hogwarts. The Gryffindor Tower had been the only thing keeping her from being fully thrown into the middle of the war. Breaks had been difficult enough, trying to stomach her parents discourse while training with her father. Moving back into the Manor felt like a nightmare come to life. The first year after graduation did not go well. Octavia showed up at home too many times, a little too inebriated to train with her father. The Rowle Manor had become a place she couldn’t live. Octavia started to lash out against her parents at an unacceptable level. After a year, it was time for her to move out or she would have lost her mind. She’d snap soon if she didn’t get some distance from her parents. She’d always had a knack for spell building, making little charms from a young age to play pranks and to sneak out of more compromising situations. So, she turned her hobby into a career. Posting herself out of Borgin and Burke’s shop, where she could spend a bulk of her time surrounded by Flora and Rosalyn, who had become more like family over the years than her own.
Moving into the townhouse only delayed the inevitable. Her work started to attract a darker genre of client. Word had spread and Octavia keeps herself out of the fighting by providing a valuable service. For the past few years, she has been able to keep the burden of her name from consuming her. She managed to provide free services for those who worked close to her father and entertained the afternoon tea date or two with eligible bachelors, which satisfied her parents enough to keep them off her back. As the war spirals into a tipping point, the time is coming when she’ll have to prove herself. Either as a loyal solider or a loyal pureblood wife. Neither option is very appealing to her and she’s still searching for a third one.

PANDORA CROSS ♦︎ RAVENCLAW ALUMNA ♦︎ NEUTRAL ♦︎ FC: MELISSA BENOIST ♦︎ TAKEN
B I O G R A P H Y :
A sunny day in March is rare in England, and yet Pandora Cross was born on such a day, to a Muggle father and a witch mother. The warm golden rays seemed to soak into the newborn’s personality, as she grew up to be a bubbly, sweet girl. Even before she could speak, Pandora was engaged in the world around her, eyes wide open and taking everything in, tiny hands grasping at anything within reach. Curious and energetic, the little girl toddled through life with a smile on her face. Not much changed as she grew older. If anything, the more of the world that Pandora saw, the more enchanted she became with the wonders around her. She saw the best in everyone, found silver linings that no one else could see, and if anyone ever needed a shoulder to lean on, Pandora would happily offer one.
Her mother would entertain little Pandora with simple spells, and Pandora was amazed. It wasn’t so much the feats of magic themselves that astounded her, but that there was something in the air around her, in the trees and the earth and the sky – drifting through the world like music on the breeze – that could be harnessed by anyone lucky enough to hear the song. When her mother told her that someday she, Pandora, could possibly do such things, the child hoped and prayed that Mrs. Cross was right. At five years old, her dreams came true. Seeing a pretty sweater of her mother’s, Pandora shrank it until it was small enough to fit her. It made both of her parents laugh, and Mrs. Cross merely duplicated the sweater so Pandora could have one of her own. For her part, Pandora was thrilled that she was a part of something so special, so beautiful, a part of something that connected her to life itself like the roots of a tree digging into the earth.
At Hogwarts, Pandora found herself making friends with everyone she could – fellow Ravenclaws, students from other houses, residents and employees of Hogsmeade, even a few of the house elves. Not everyone was fond of her, with some people finding her gung-ho nature to be too much for them, or assuming she was putting them on. But those who realized that every inch of Pandora’s ebullient personality was real discovered a friend who was deeply loyal and patient, who often had a better read on them than they did on themselves. She had a talent for seeing through subterfuge and reaching into the heart of the matter. Her friends knew that they could come to her with anything, and she would do anything to help. Sometimes her solutions were rather unrealistic, a day dreamer’s idea of how to fix a problem (like when a fellow Ravenclaw lost their contact lense, and Pandora suggested shrinking themselves down like Alice In Wonderland to find it). But she also had unique, creative problem-solving ideas that made her an ideal Ravenclaw (like magicking a basket with muffins, cookies and other goodies to float around the common room during exam time, both as a stress reliever and to make sure students ate).
In terms of academics, Pandora was a good student when she could focus, but truth be told, that wasn’t often. Her papers were meandering and vague, with her thought process starting out strong before petering out. It was clear that she was a bright girl, with an inventive mind, but she sometimes struggled to express herself in writing. Even when she was speaking aloud, her mind often latched onto different tangents, which made talking with her both entertaining and a bit of a rollercoaster ride. All the same, she was a bright, pleasant presence in the classroom, and for the most part, professors liked her. Her best classes were Charms and Transfiguration, as they focused the most on spellwork, which was where she found her talent.
Almost as soon as she arrived at school, Pandora had begun to invent spells of her own. She had begun only has a hobby, tinkering with existing spells. It took her a few years to begin to share them, and even then, she just showed them to her friends. And then they began to use them, and friends of her friends began to use them, and eventually the teachers got wind of them. It was clear to the professors, as scatter-brained and dreamy as the girl may be, that she had a talent for this. She had never considered doing spellwork professionally, but her professors encouraged her to do so. Pandora hadn’t given much thought to what she would do after Hogwarts, but being able to work in a field she was passionate about seemed to be the best avenue she could take. With the help of her teachers, she was able to establish connections within the magical community that could allow her spellwork to get noticed.
Her school years were only marred by one thing, a bruise that continued to ache and spread even as she left school. The idea that there were some people who truly believed  that others were inferior, that they didn’t deserve to practice magic because of their parentage, was at first confusing but ultimately not alarming. Surely this was just a type of bullying that these students would grow out of.  It just didn’t make any sense to her how people could really treat others so cruelly, especially for something they couldn’t help. As she left school and realized that these ideals weren’t left behind in the classroom, Pandora felt a creeping sense of fear that even she couldn’t push back. She watched as innocent people were harmed for virtue of their birth, without ever considering the fact that she, as a half-blood, could also be considered a target.
Now working as a spell inventor and living in Ottery St. Catchpole with her friend Xenophilius Lovegood, Pandora loves her life. She enjoys her job, adores her friends, and she doesn’t want anything to change (well, truth be told, she would like something with Xeno to change…but she hasn’t told anyone about that yet). As she watches the war grow to a fever pitch around her, Pandora tries to cling to the hope that everything will be okay. She works on defensive and protective spells for her friends and family, for anyone who may ask, and hopes that they will be enough to keep those she loves safe. She doesn’t know if she could stand it if anything happened to them.

EUROPA FAWLEY ♦︎ GRYFFINDOR ALUMNUM ♦︎ ORDER MEMBER ♦︎ FC: FREEMA AGYEMAN ♦︎ TAKEN
B I O G R A P H Y :
Europa Polonius Fawley was born into a family with expectations. The eldest and only child of former Minister Hector Fawley and his wife Cecily, Europa had the weight of the family name placed squarely upon their shoulders. Not that they minded, of course. Europa was always quick to rise to the challenge, and this was no different. Their parents wanted a respectable and steadfast heir? Europa could be that. Their parents wanted someone responsible? They could do that. By the time their parents had them, Hector and Cecily were abnormally old, even by wizarding standards. Hector had been in office as Minister for Magic from 1925 to 1939. He’d been a young man then, too young to be in office. Everyone had been relieved when he’d stepped down, and he and his wife had finally gotten the chance to start thinking about having a family. It took them eighteen years, but they finally managed to have Europa.
Growing up, Europa always knew that they were different. They kept it quiet, but they knew, and part of them sensed that maybe their parents did too. But they were old, and Europa didn’t want to upset them, or make them feel like they had to change their perfect plan for their perfect child. So they kept quiet, and moved through it. Wore what Cecily wanted, behaved like Hector expected, played the part of obedient daughter when it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Hogwarts was a relief, and a chance for Europa to grow. Their cousin Kingsley– their best friend and confidant– knew how they felt, and was supportive of them in a way that made Europa feel like they could be whoever they wanted while they were at school. They kept quiet at first, flew under the radar. They were the child of a former Minister, after all, and that came with a certain level of expectation that they had to live up to. Sorted into Gryffindor, the house of the brave and bold, Europa was determined to become just that someday.
But it was not that day, not for six years. Europa grew and grew, and then just like that, everything changed. The death of Cecily Fawley opened up a door that Europa had never expected. Europa had never had a difficult relationship with their mother, and hadn’t expected things to change much after she died. But their father stepped back, and as a result, Europa stepped up. Marriage was the most logical option, and Europa tolerated their father desperately searching for matches until a few months before their eighteenth birthday, he passed too. Left alone with the family fortune, Europa took their future into their own hands.
The original plan had been to follow in their father’s footsteps and join up with the Ministry, become a member of the Wizengamot or something similar. And Europa stuck to that plan, working as a secretary for a long time in the department, but it wasn’t enough. They wanted to do something more, something that allowed them within the courtrooms, not just sitting at a desk outside. They moved to the Magical Law Enforcement Squad, got the training that they needed, worked hard, and passed whatever examinations they needed to be useful. Maybe they weren’t an Auror like Kingsley, or in the running for Minister like their father had been, but it didn’t matter. They were doing something.
When the war really started picking up, though, Europa knew that they didn’t want to just stand by and let the wizarding world go to hell, so they convinced Kingsley to help them approach Dumbledore about the Order. It was not the conventional way of doing things, but Europa had never been conventional. They joined the Order with determination, but with no small amount of caution. Their father’s legacy had always been neutral, and Europa didn’t want to sacrifice that just to join in a war that no one was sure how it would end. So they kept their head down, went back to work, and started to be as useful for the Order as they could be. Whether it was information, new technology, or anything else, Europa did their best to provide it.
In 1976, Europa asked to be transferred back to the Wizengamot, but not as a secretary. With the proper training in hand, Europa became a security guard for the courtrooms. Finally, they were able to listen in, find out what was happening behind closed doors. Information was easy to come by there, and pass on to the Order. Maybe they weren’t a fighter like Kingsley. But they learned quickly that wars weren’t won by fighters. They were won by those wise enough to listen, and smart enough to act.
