The last time I saw the sun, it stung my eyes and cast a glare over my perception.
I now know the sun to feel like a warm hug, similar to embracing your closest friend. The feeling growing more and more comforting the longer you go without it. The taste of a fresh orange lingers in my mouth each time I feel the sun, like a sweet, sweet, summer day. The sun is sweet, tangy, and brilliant, just like a freshly peeled orange. Have you ever heard the song “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac? If you have, then you know the sun. The way it makes you want to dance and cheer and be just a little bit kinder. There are many ways to know a sight, just like the sun, and not all of them are with your eyes.
"Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had" (Fleetwod Mac, Dreams)
The last time I saw the ocean, I admired the way the waves capped with foam on a stormy day, and how small fish sometimes danced in the shallow shores.
I now know the ocean more intimately. I know the ocean to taste how most people would describe an ice cream cone; sweet, salty, and varying in texture. The ocean can be known and understood in many ways. Sometimes, the ocean sounds like silk if silk was known to make a distinct noise. The soft curves of tiny waves lapping politely at the sand. On these days, the ocean tastes like a sweet, smooth chocolate soft serve. Other days, the ocean sounds like a pounding orchestra, beautiful and beastly. There are days when the spray will slap your skin, gently painting you like a canvas. On these days, the ocean tastes more like mint chip, a flavour known to cause arguments and chaos, loved by some, and hated by others. This is how I know the ocean.
The last time I saw the snow, I sat by the window and watched as snowflakes fell from the sky, ultimately blanketing the ground in a white so bright it overwhelmed my vision.
Instead of appreciating the millions of uniquely crafted flakes falling from the sky, I now appreciate the way the world goes silent. Snow is no longer a gleaming white sight, but instead a protective layer which quiets the noise. In the silence, the scent of freshly burning firewood looms, and I can taste hot cocoa almost always. My skin feels cold, but my heart feels warm, this is how snow feels.
The last time I saw anything was two years ago, just before I went blind. But to see is not the only way to know. I've come to realize that the sights of my past exist in nostalgic echoes, feelings, tastes, and smells, taking on forms and meanings different than I once knew.
