Sun

Isaac Hawke

Honestly, this ended up being the only motif left after assigning moon and star to my Inquisitor and Warden, but it fits a cheerful extrovert with red hair. Besides being a musician, I’ve pictured Isaac as someone who gardens--I don’t know if I’ve discussed this headcanon anywhere before or not, but I want to think that he and Merrill actually restore the gardens at the Amell estate--and the idea of sunlight as restorative and nurturing seems relevant for that. There’s also a connection with Varric’s tarot card representation (the Sun), so I think this suits Isaac rather well.

Moon

Solomon Trevelyan

Solomon has the color scheme for this, with albinism making him unusually pale and white-haired, but thinking of the moon as a representation of mystery, cycles, and emotion, I think this fits him as well. He’s a necromancer whose magic taps into life energy itself and deals with spirits that could easily be considered demons, and his life has been marked by phases that ultimately end in a “return”: growing up in the Alienage, being adopted into his father’s family after his mother’s death, being sent to the Circle where he gradually goes from rebellious apprentice with multiple escape attempts to Senior Enchanter and person who keeps the Ostwick branch of the Libertarians afloat after news of Kinloch Hold’s near-downfall causes a decline in membership, the Circle falling just for him to end up as part of the delegation of mages at the Conclave, being Inquisitor, and finally shedding that title by disbanding the Inquisition as well as his “human” name in favor of reclaiming “Sulevin,” his birth name that he had no choice but to give up when recognized by his father, Bann Trevelyan. He’s gradually had to learn to bottle up his emotions and get better at picking his own battles just to survive, but I still picture him as someone who feels a lot, deeply, and this, combined with “dark forces aren’t necessarily evil” and “it’s never too late to reconnect,” make me think a moon motif suits him.

Star

Ephraim Surana

This one came to mind immediately, because I’ve had “Ephraim studied astronomy in the Circle and is fascinated by the stars” as a headcanon for long time. Thinking about stars as crucial to navigation and as ways of understanding the world, considering all of the myths and history associated with constellations both in our world and Thedas, I think this motif suits Ephraim, who I also associate with stories and history. I feel like I’ve talked about the headcanon that he loves romance novels and has written fanfic for his favorite ones a lot, but one I haven’t focused on as much is “he translated and made copies of the Eluvian manuscript that’s crucial to the plot of Witch Hunt, so there’s no stealing of the text from Ariane’s clan by Morrigan, who’d have her own copy that Ephraim shared with her during the Blight.” I want to think there was an entire “ring” of mages dedicated to ensuring access to their people’s knowledge that the Chantry tried to claim and to preserving what they might have brought with them from outside the Circle, like songs, recipes, etc. It’s not an original idea by any means (thank you Kari/October-Rosehip for having things like this in Macsen’a backstory if you see this), but the sheer concept of an “underground elven library in Kinloch Hold” compels me. To bring this back around to stars, thinking of them as omens makes me think of Ephraim as well—he’s my oldest Dragon Age OC and has been through so many changes. I’ll probably mess with his story more if I ever get to replay the series again. But one theme I want to think has been consistent with him, and one I want to keep, is “no matter what one has done, one can always decide and try to be a better person.” When I think of omens, I think of symbols, mysterious and powerful, and I think that suits the Hero of Ferelden.

For the three things meme, if you’re still taking them: 1. Ephraim Surana named his mabari “Aldenon,” after a mage of Fereldan legend. Alistair shortens it to “Nonny.” 2. He keeps a journal during the Blight; one of the first things he does after returning from Orzammar and the Deep Roads is going over records of what he observed there with Morrigan, who was absent from that journey. 3. His favorite color is blue.

Nonny is on friendly terms with Alistair and that annoys Ephraim to no end. Ephraim doesn’t like it when Aldenon is being called Nonny. By anyone. But *especially* by Alistair.Morrigan and Ephraim enjoy "mind chess”. But they’ve expanded upon the original game, adding moves and rules inspired by magic and war magic strategy. (Ephraim is rather shocked when Zevran learns enough of the rules just by listening to *almost* beat him at his own game once.)

For the OC gift meme (if you’re still accepting these): A rectangular paper-covered parcel, strings of twine crossing over it, arrives for Damita one day, its sender unspecified. Untying the string and unfurling the package’s wrappings reveals a journal, leather-bound and of quality make. “For your research” reads the neatly folded note which falls out of it. Though his signature isn’t present, the writing is unmistakably Ephraim Surana’s.

Sorry this took so long! I meant to answer this sooner and then, well…I got a little carried away! (I have gotten very invested in this AU)

Damita lets the note fall onto her desk, flipping through the black pages, the scent of leather mixing with the smells of herbs and plants that fill her work space. 

It is a thoughtful gift, but one that leaves her feeling conflicted. 

Conflicted describes how she feels about Ephraim precisely. She can appreciate what he accomplished, the fact that he ended the Blight and yet…her thoughts turn to Alistair, to Wynne, and to Leli…what might have been…

She shook her head, banishing the old memories. It does no good to dwell on past things. And Zevran had told her that Leli was alive, somehow and working with the Divine…

Damita sighed and set the gift aside, slipping the note inside. Pulling out a piece of paper, she wrote a reply. 

Dear Ephraim, 

Your gift was received and appreciated. 

She pauses, consider the weight of her next words. Does she tell him of what she had discovered? Would it just instill unfounded hope? 

While it was true that she focused on poisons and medicines, the courts of Antiva eager and clamoring for both, her own research into the Blight and what it was, more mutagenic disease then holy curse, she had found, means that she had much to share with the wardens…if she chose to. 

Sighing, she set aside the letter and moved back to her lab. 

She would have to think harder on this before she decided. 

3 Months Later

Wrapping the journal in waterproof hides, she tucked her note into the folds. Damita had decided it was time to share what she learned, what she had uncovered. 

Taking the gifted journal, she had filled it with research notes, diagrams of the darkspawn that she had dissected and painstakingly copied in complete detail, references to texts she had found in the royal libraries, everything she had found. 

She had been hesitant to share this with him, but then Morrigan’s last letter had changed her mind. 

Damita didn’t know if this would help, but she was reaching the end of what she could do without an actual warden to test her theories. The Blight, the taint, it had been a puzzle that she had to try to solve. But, it was time to move on.

Zevran swooped in behind her, his familiar presence comforting. 

“My friend, is it ready?” 

“Yes, here.” She handed him the package. “Thank you for taking it. I did not wish to chance it getting lost in transit.” 

“Of course.” He took it, sliding it into his pack. “I will send your regards to Morrigan and Ephraim.” 

Damita nodded. She had her own pack ready. 

Zevran reached his hand to her face, turning it towards him. “Will you be alright?” The worry lines were clear, even behind his teasing gaze.

“I will be.” She said, but the conviction was lacking. “I need to see her.” She straightened her shoulders. 

Zevran nodded, stroking her cheek. “I will meet you in Orlais.” He placed a feather light kiss on her forehead. Before he could step away, she had wrapped him in a hug, pulling him tight. 

“Be careful, Zev.” 

“You too, Dami.” 

“Give Kieran a hug from me.” 

He chuckled. “Of course.” 

And then he was gone. 

Damita secured her own pack and gave her lab one final look. She didn’t know if she would be returning, but she was determined to find answers, find closure. She didn’t know if Leliana wanted to see her, but she was going to go anyways. 

Sighing, she left the room, closing the door on a chapter of her life. 

Perhaps she would visit Morrigan and Kieran after this…maybe even Ephraim. Get closure on that as well... 

Shaking her head, she walked down the hall, her staff in hand, towards what she hoped was answers.

He considers the question, glancing down at the rosewood ring on his left hand as his fingers, their nails covered with polish the color of raven’s wings, idly flex. “This is a pointless question,” he finally says, looking back up with a glare. “I cannot travel back in time. Wanting to change things does me about as much good as wishing the sun wouldn’t rise or that rain wouldn’t fall. It changes nothing. My life has turned out like it has—I have become who I am now—because of my decisions, good and bad. I would not change anything even if I could. The pain has taught me as much as the joy. I am happy with Morrigan and Kieran exactly as I am now. I am loved for who I am, mistakes and all. I have no idea where or who I would be if I’d done things differently, and even if I knew that uncertainty would somehow turn out ‘better’ than my current circumstances, I would do nothing to change them. This reality is the one with my family, and I am never giving them up, not for all the world.”
