END OF THE YEAR BOOK TAG 2023
It's the end of the year again! I've been doing this tag since 2020 and I love looking at the stats every year. Although my 5 star reads keep getting lesser every year or I'm just getting more strict with my ratings, who knows? Some answers might be a continuation of my Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag so I don't repeat books again. Here are the questions:
1. How many books did you read this year?
I read 166 books this year (including 4 rereads)
2. What genres did you read?
62 romance books
59 mystery/thrillers
15 fantasy books
11 contemporaries
6 graphic novel/manga
6 anthologies
3 non-fiction books
3 historical fiction
1 poetry
3. What age ranges did you read?
130 adult books
16 young adult books
13 new adult books
7 middle grade books
4. How many books got each rating?
23 five star books (including 4 rereads)
69 four star books
58 three star books
16 two star books
5. Best book you've read this year?
I think Babel by R. F. Kuang is still my number one of the year, nothing was able to top that reading experience for me. I've made a post with all my 5 star reads of the year if you need more recs!
6. Have you completed any series this year?
It was my reading goal to complete more series and i definitely did that.
Dance of Thieves duology by Mary E. Pearson
Lovestruck series by Mimi Grace
Tattered and Torn series by Catherine Cowles
Spirit Hunters by Ellen Oh
Dirty Air Series by Lauren Asher
Queen's Cove series by Stephanie Archer

9. Underrated gems (for the second half of the year)
Tumblr media
10. Beautiful book covers (for the second half of the year)
Tumblr media
11. New favorite authors you discovered
Romance authors: Catherine Cowles, Mimi Grace, Stephanie Archer, Juliana Smith, Kristina Forest, Catherine Walsh
Mystery/thriller authors: Freida McFadden, Mary Kubica, Catherine Ryan Howard, A. R. Torre, Lucinda Berry, Keigo Higashino
12. Favorite new releases of the year
Tumblr media
13. Books that lived up to the hype
Tumblr media
14. Books that did not live up to the hype
Tumblr media
15. Longest and shortest book you read this year
Longest book: Final Offer by Lauren Asher (583 books)
Shortest book: Not Your Valentine by Jackie Lau (136 pages)
16. Did you accomplish your reading goals
I did complete 5 series so that's done. I read more than 100 books but i didn't manage to finish The Count of Monte Cristo because i gave up halfway because I had started slumping. I will try to pick it up again next year!
17. Reading plans for next year
I want to slow down on my reading and try to put quality over quantity because this reading year was so average.

end of the year book tag 2023
I did this tag last year more or less at this time. This book tag was created by Ariel Bissett over on youtube, and I recently heard her talking about it again in her podcast, which is how I got the inspiration of doing it again this year. As I think I have also mentioned last year when doing this, I tend to be a mood reader so planning my next reads never really works, but it's fun to sit down and reflect a bit on what is coming next into my reading life before the year is over.
Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
As I am writing this I have three main books I am in the middle of: Hell Followed With us by Andrew Joseph White, Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson and Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker. I have technically also started reading Walden by Thoreau a while back, but I don't have a plan to finish it quickly, it's more one of those books I read a little bit every once in a while when I feel like it, because I want to grasp as much as I can and while I am also taking classes and studying for exams I always struggle a bit with enjoying non-fic on my own.
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
I am once again doing this tag in the middle of autumn, so idk how much it counts, but I don't think I have a proper autumnal book on my tbr/wishlist. I am still waiting to get the sixth volume of Something Is Killing The Children, which is an horror graphic novel so that might count as a spooky season book. But I don't really wait spooky season to read horror books.
Is there a new release you're still waiting for?
As I mentioned the sixth volume of Something Is Killing The Children has very recently came out here in Italy and I am desperately waiting to find a copy of it. I am also waiting to get Bookstores And Bonedust by Travis Baldree which is coming out at the beginning of November. There are a couple of other 2023 releases I still haven't got my hands on but I don't know yet if I'll get them before the year ends (mainly He Who Drowned The World by Shelly Parker Chan, and The Land Of Lost Things by John Connolly). I am also waiting for the release of the final book in the locked tomb series but I don't think a release date has been set yet? (and regarding that I have yet to decide what I want to do because I would like to get physical copies of the English editions, but it will be a future me problem to solve).
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
One of my goals for 2023 is the read all the books I have bought this year, or at least as many as I can. I must say I have been very good with this goal, but I do have a couple of books that have been sitting on my shelf for a while. I don't know if I'll get into the right mood to read them before the year ends but I will add a couple of those to this list. The first one is Nel Buio Della Casa by Fiore Manni and Michele Monteleone. It's an horror novel of the hauted house genre which is one of my favourites but for some reason I haven't picked it up yet. Next is a book I cannot wait to pick up The Ballad Of The Reading Gaol by Oscar Wilde, I love this author and after reading De Profundis earlier this year I have been really intrigued by this poem. Finally I bought a prose edition of The Odyssey and I might end up picking it up before the year ends.
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?
Not really? I expect to love a lot of the books I'd like to read before the end of the year but there's a couple of books I read this year that I doubt can be topped (Gideon The Ninth being at the top of that list alongside The Priory Of The Orange Tree).
Have you already started making reading plans for next year?
I actually have, weirdly enough. I was thinking about goals for next year and I think I will definitely keep the goal of trying to read all/ most of the books I buy during the year. I certainly need to find a way to read more of the books that have been on my shelves for years, so I will have to think of a more structured plan to reach that goal. I am also considering to create a goal to finally complete my Neil Gaiman collection since this year I have read all of the books by him I own. That could be a fun goal I think. Lastly I'd like to try and get as many books as I can second hand. It's not really super easy for me to do, because where I live there are no second hand book stores, and generally what I look for is quite difficult to find in regular shops, but there's a few exceptions, like classics for example are easier to thrift. Again these are more brain dump thoughts than an actual plan, but it's more than what I had last year at this time.

End of the Year Book Tag
I saw this set of questions on Emily Fox's channel on booktube, and thought it would be fun to fill out and share here. This is a set of 6 questions geared towards November- December & wrapping up 2023.
1.Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
Nope. I don't tend to start a book and then put it down for later. I usually either read it or dnf.
2.Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
I'm hoping to start a reread of A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows soon. This was a favorite from last year and is a great fantasy romance that should be a good autumn --> winter book.
3.Is there a new release you're still waiting for?
All The Hidden Paths by Foz Meadows! This comes out Dec 5th, and I'm hoping to start it as soon as I'm done with my reread of book 1.
4.What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
The Damar books by Robin McKinley
A Winter's Promise by Christelle Dabos (about time I start this series!)
Blade Breaker by Victoria Aveyard
5.Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite?
I don't think there are any books that could currently top my #1, but I'm hoping to get some 5 star books before the end of the year.
6.Have you already started making reading plans for 2024?
Oh yeah. There are so many new releases I'm excited for in Jan/Feb/March, and I'm hoping to get to as many as I possibly can. I'm also hoping to continue to read some series that I started at the end of this year.
If you're reading this, consider yourself tagged, and feel free to copy/paste these questions and fill them out!

End of the Year Book Tag
@theinquisitxor shared these questions geared towards Nov/Dec 2023, and I am considering myself tagged (as invited) because it's nice to have some prompts to remind me to post about books!
1. Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
I don't have specific time goals, so if there's anything I'm currently reading now, I won't mind if it carries over into next year; also, I read fairly quickly so if I pick something up now I'll probably finish it before the next month is up! That all being said, I guess I am still technically reading the nonfiction book Flush by Bryn Nelson (in short shifts between reading other things) and I'd like to finish it someday.
2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
No, but I will probably read something Christmassy (e.g. The Box of Delights) as Christmas itself approaches.
3. Is there a new release you're still waiting for?
I don't keep track of new releases, except occasionally when I see an author I like has something coming out, so the next release I'm excited for (and the only one, right now) isn't until January!
4. What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
Aside from Flush, I'm currently reading (more quickly) Obelists at Sea by C. Daley King, and A Shepherd's Life by James Rebanks. I'd like to finish those up. Also expecting Wet Grave by Barbara Hambly as a library hold, and hopefully that arrives and I can reread it before the year is up!
5. Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite?
Hmm, if I'm expecting it is it really a shock? Anyway, I am always looking for books I think I'll like, and I never know if they'll be favorites until I read them! I did recently read Tam Lin by Pamela Dean and I liked it a lot (I thought I might like it, it was nice that it turned out to be by a lot!), so if anyone has any recs based on enjoying that retelling specifically, let me know!
6. Have you already started making reading plans for 2024?
The new release! (The Nubian's Curse, by Barbara Hambly.) Aside from that, I will do as I always do and just keep up a steady stream of whatever I feel like reading!
Feel free to consider yourself tagged! I will also tag @therefugeofbooks and @wearethekat in a non-obligatory way, if you all would like to answer some reading questions.

Ahh, the passing of time.
This year according to Goodreads I have read 437 books, at this point which feels wrong to leave it at but also I don't want to destroy my mental health before 2024, so I'm going to let it be.
Statistically, I think it's mostly novels, but also a mix of graphic novels, manga, poetry and children's books (because the art, don't skip on picture books!).
I will share my goodread stats soon, however this is my end of the year book tag, and if you have any questions feel free to ask, if you want recommendations, feel free too!
ARE THERE ANY BOOKS YOU STARTED THIS YEAR THAT YOU NEED TO FINISH?
I always finish books I like generally, but I wish I had finished 'The Cherry Robbers' by Sarai Walker. I liked it while reading it but I think I got to a lull in the book and it felt like work but I hear it's a great book so I want to go back to that, maybe listen to it instead.
DO YOU HAVE AN AUTUMNAL BOOK TO TRANSITION INTO THE END OF THE YEAR?
I think all books to me are transitional books to me, I wish I could read by season and mood but I just see a book and I read it. The books I have from the library are the ones I want to read for the rest of the year and into the new one. I am getting a few books for Christmas, so I might read them too, 'The Theory Of Everything Else' by Dan Schreiber, I know is on my wishlist for example.
IS THERE A NEW RELEASE YOU’RE STILL WAITING FOR?
I am waiting for Silverborn for Jessica Townsend, An Education In Malice by S.T. Gibson and The Mystery Guest by Nita Prose but I think they are all coming out next year and I have ARC's for two of these so I'm my own worst enemy really.
WHAT ARE THREE BOOKS YOU WANT TO READ BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR?
I have 'The Hurricane Wars' next to me and I've heard some good things, 'Aces Wild' which is a book about a group of asexuals planning a heist and I am here for that and I mentioned 'The Theory Of Everything Else' which will be an interesting read.
IS THERE A BOOK YOU THINK COULD STILL SHOCK YOU AND BECOME YOUR FAVORITE BOOK OF THE YEAR?
I know I'm reading a five star right now (Lost In The Moment And Found by Seanan Maguire) however the author always gives me a five star book so I'm not exactly shocked. I don't know, I want to be surprised by how good a book will be!
HAVE YOU ALREADY STARTED MAKING READING PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR?
I am going to try and be more careful in my selections when reading. I know my reading taste now so much better and I would just pick things because others liked them or honestly, I am sometimes a cover buyer and so this time I'm going to read blurbs and find out if I would actually like it, and not someone I know would.
Also I would like to make a 'if I hate it, donate it' promise to myself.
What are your plans for the new year and reading? Let me know!
Vee xo

Hey 7 :)
Thanks for the ask ☺️
7: What was your average Goodreads rating? Does it seem accurate?
3.9 ⭐
OMG noooo! That is the lowest I've ever seen it to be 😭 I usually am pretty good at finding books I'll love (aka everything fantasy), but this year I expanded a bit due to book club. I'm going to blame The Secret History and The Incarnations for this 🫥 They both sucked!
The fantasy reads were all lovely, the contemporaries make me have regrets.

1,3, and 10!!
Lane, you precious gem, thank you <3 Did you read anything interesting this year, what would be your top five? ~
[1] How many books did you read this year?
57, if you include the current! That is quite a leap from, eh, six last year.
[3] What were your favorite top five books this year?
in no particular order :
Kindred (masterpiece)
The House in the Cerulean Sea (blatant heart catering, would def cry again about a gnome girl wanting to brain people with a shovel)
The City Beautiful (such a vibe)
Drowned Country (such a vibe 2)
Gideon the Ninth (as well as Harrow the Ninth and Nona the Ninth, I cannot pick one, though Harrow does have a leg up for featuring the world's funniest hateful polycule aka god's duplicitous sluts)
[10] What was your favorite release of the year?
Given the speed of lightning with which I devoured it, most likely Nona the Ninth, but Juniper & Thorn was quite interesting, too (in that I had very mixed reaction and then was like "you know what...")

End of the Year Book Tag
Thank you @selkiestudies for tagging me! I love these haha
Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish? No! I dnf'ed one book early in the year and don't plan on returning to it at this time lol.
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year? Yes! It started with The Picture of Dorian Gray and I think If We Were Villains really solidified the autumn vibes. For winter, I'm going to read The Counte of Monte Cristo
Is there a new release you're still waiting for? No because I suck at keeping up with book releases.
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year? Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, The Molecule of More, Atlas Six
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite book of the year? I think Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow has that potential but my book of the year right now is gonna be hard to dethrone.
Have you already started making reading plans for next year? It's a loose plan but all the books I have purchased since moving here in June 2022... I need to finish before I move again in (probably) June 2023. I'll have a separate post discussing my reading goals for 2023! For example, I'm gonna try to read The Lord of the Rings series before spring break.
Idk who to tag so anyone who wants to do this, please do it!

The End of the Year Book Tag
This book tag was created by Ariel Bissett over on youtube, and since I have recently seen other videos of people doing it I felt like it could be a nice to do in order to plan a bit my tbr before the end of the year. I am a mood reader but once in a while I like to sit down and brainstorm my next reads, and why not do it one here and have fun seeing what other people are planning to read themselves?
Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
As I am writing this I am in the middle of reading Wyrd And Other Derelictions by Adam Nevill. There's also a few books I started earlier this year and I put on hold like Van Gogh's letters to his brother Theo and The Secret Life Of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. Both these books I started and put on hold because I was so busy with working on my thesis I couldn't bring myself to read non fiction. I am not sure I'll finish them by the end of the year. I will finish them someday cause I was really liking both, but I need to be in the right mindset to enjoy non fiction.
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
We're in the middle of autumn but whatever. As I mentioned in the introduction I am mostly a mood reader so I never do much planning. I really like cozy books with autumnal vibes, but to be honest this year I didn't really read anything that fits this box. I was considering picking up Wildwood by Colin Meloy, which has been on my shelves for litteral ages since it was a gift I receved when I started high school. I feel like the vibes could fit perfectly, but I heard online that it's a really slow book which is not really helping with motivation. (If you read this book please let me know what you thought of it and if it's worth it).
Is there a new release you're still waiting for?
In October the lates book by Jonathan Sims came out and I still have to get it, and I cannot wait. I was waiting till november because the internet tells me that Legends And Lattes by Travis Baldree will come out next week and I'd like to get that as well. I have seen this last book online already so I have no idea why I didn't manage to get it earlier, but it's fine I'll get this couple of books as a treat after graduating. The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake also recently came out, and although I'd like to get it sometime it's not in my priorities at the moment.
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
After I'll get them both Family Business by Jonny Sims and Legends and Lattes. As for what I already on my shelves I'd like to read at least one non fiction book before the year ends. My top pick at the moment is Bisexuality In The Ancient World by Eva Cantarella, but I also have a book on Celtic Mythology I'd really like to get to by T.W. Rolleston. I'd also like to read the next book in The Witcher series by Andzej Sapkowski, I think the next one in the series for me should be Baptism Of Fire. It's a cool series but I need to be focus as it's set in a very complicated world, but for some reason I always get in the mood for the series around winter time.
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?
I have very high hopes for Family Business by Jonny Sims. He is the author of The Magnus Archives which is by far the best horror piece of entertainment I have ever experienced. I love his writing style, and his type of horror really fits what I like, so there's a high chance this book will be in my top books of the year.
Have you already started making reading plans for next year?
Absolutely not. As I said I am a mood reader, so I don't really plan far ahead. I hope I'll get to read as much as this year even though I'll be going to class and studying for exams, I really have zero reading plans for 2023.
I am curious to know what other people plan on reading before the year ends so if you decide to do this yourself tag me!! I tag @bulletnotestudies, @peregrination-studiesnation-studies, @contre-qui, @oneanxiousstudybuddy, @lau-and-history, @thatstudyblrontea, and as I was saying anyone who wants to have fun and do this!

Thanks for the ask 😘
6: Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?
Oh God, yes so many! The Priory of the Orange Tree, Empire of the Vampire (have both bricks, didn't find the courage to read them). And Emma 🥲
14: What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
The Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher (audiobook). Not gonna say Vincent van Gogh because I haven't read it at all and it seems like a pipe dream now.
22: What's the longest book you read?
*through gritted teeth* The Secret History 🔪 (as paperback). The longest audiobook would be The Shadow of What was Lost by James Islington (25h 28m) 🎉
