Eleanor: "Mom, c'mere. How are you feeling?"

Abby: "Oh you know...could be better, could be worse."

Eleanor: "I can't believe Snaggles is gone. She was the sweetest kitty."

Abby: "She was, and I miss her."

Eleanor: "At least you have Sunny to keep you company! And Louis, of course, and me! I'm always just one phonecall away, you know that."

Abby appreciated her daughter's attempts to make her feel better. She wasn't exactly a hermit; she had a high-powered, public-facing job, but that didn't mean she wasn't lonely.

Perhaps that was why she hadn't tried too hard to get Louis to move out.

It was Louis who had suggested throwing a casual house party for family and friends.

An opportunity to catch up with people they might otherwise not see very much of, given everyone's busy lives.

Louis: "I've been thinking about buying a guitar. What d'you think? You could be looking at a future rock god!"

Evelyn: "Yeah...I've heard you sing. I don't think it's happening, Lou."

Louis: "Playing an instrument is not the same as singing!"

Evelyn: "Do you have any idea how much work learning to play an instrument is?"

Fiona: "So. You're the good little witchling my brother is dating. It's a beautiful night. Shouldn't you be out frolicking in the moonlight, communing with your goddess?"

Hannah: "Shouldn't you be skulking in a swamp, sacrificing babies to the dark gods or something?"

Fiona: "Oh, I don't do that. Virgin sacrifices are more my thing."

Hannah: "Good luck finding one of those. Now, are we playing or what?"

Hah! She was feisty, Fiona had to give her that. Maybe Rowan didn't have such terrible taste in romantic partners after all.

LUCY & THE CRIMINALS

Lucy’s Encounters with the Criminal Underworld ~ Part 1

To add drama and an element of danger to her sitcoms, Lucy would often encounter burglars, thieves, robbers, and other criminals.  Here’s a look at some of those on the ‘other side of the law’ in early Lucycoms. 

“The Burglar” (1947) ~ Lucille Ball guest stars on the radio show “The Smiths of Hollywood” starring Arthur Treacher and Brenda Marshall. At Lucille Ball’s home, a burglar and a concerned neighbor break in!  

BILL: “By the time he finishes off that Scotch, you’ll wish the real burglar had gotten in!”  BURGLAR: “I am in.”  LUCY (screams): “They’re coming through the woodwork!”

“The Fur Coat” (1951) ~ To get an expensive fur back from Lucy, Ricky enlists Fred to paly a burglar to steal it back. Naturally a real burglar (Ben Weldon) shows up on the same night! 

“New Neighbors” (1952) ~ Lucy believes the actors who move in to the building are actually dangerous spies intent on blowing up the capitol. This leads to a shoot-out with the police. Hayden Rorke and K.T. Stevens play the couple. 

“The Kleptomaniac” (1952) ~ When Lucy is caught collecting household items for the club’s tag sale, Ricky and Fred believe she is a kleptomaniac, a theif who steals uncontrolably. Lucy finds out about their misapprehension and decides to teach them a lesson by pretending to be real theives - robbing a bank and stealing a baby elephant from the circus. 

“The Publicity Agent” (1952) ~ To get Ricky’s name in the papers, Lucy at first thinks that she should stage a robbery, but after a quick inventory her jewels are only worth $43. 

LUCY: “You know how those Hollywood stars get their name in the paper when their jewels are stolen.” 

This actually happened to Lucille Ball when on tour with Desi in 1950. Their Chicago hotel room was robbed and nearly all Lucy’s jewelry was stolen.

“Ricky and Fred Are TV Fans” (1953) ~ Lucy and Ethel are arrested attempting to cut the wires on the roof of their apartment building. At the station, the desk sergeant (Frank Nelson) assumes they are wanted female felons “Pickpocket Pearl and Sticky Fingers Sal”. Later, Sergeant Nelson apologies when he finds out that the criminals are already in prison. 

“Too Many Crooks” (1953) ~ The entire neighborhood is on alert over a prowler nicknamed Madame X.  Ethel thinks it may be Lucy and Lucy thinks it may be Ethel!  Then the real Madame X (Alice Wills) shows up!  The original script had Madame X get away at the end, taking both Ricky and Fred's suits along with her! In the filmed ending, justice is served!  

“Equal Rights” (1953) ~ Over the telephone, Lucy and Ethel pretend to be held up at gunpoint by robbers to get Ricky and Fred to rescue them from washing dishes. But when the boys discover that they were faking, they pretend to be burglars to teach them a lesson. When the police arrive, it is Ricky and Fred who are arrested. 

“Lucy Cries Wolf” (1954) ~ Lucy is overly-worried about her safety during a local crime spree, demanding Ricky demonstrate her love by protecting her against made-up thieves. Whe real burglars break in and kidnap her, Ricky and the Mertzes think Lucy is just ‘yelling tiger’ - Ricky’s version of ‘crying wolf’!  The same two actors who played the policeman in “Equal Rights” (Fred Aldrich and Louis Nicoletti) turn to the darkside here as the burglars. 

“The Great Train Robbery” (1955) ~ A jewel thief (Harry Bartel) is aboard the train and Lucy is tricked into telling him that there is a jewelry salesman in the next compartment. 

“Paris at Last” (1956) ~ Lucy gets a taste of the dark side of the City of Light. First she encounters a counterfeitter (Lawrence Dobkin)...

Followed immediately by a forger (Shepard Menken), who passes off a mass-produced painting as an original. 

“Off to Florida” (1956) ~ During a rideshare to Florida, Lucy and Ethel hear a radio report about Evelyn Holmby, a hatchet murderess driving south and believe it to be their driver, Edna Grundy, who matches the description. While Lucy and Ethel take a cat nap, Mrs. Grundy hears a report that the hatchet murderess is traveling with a red-haired companion and believes it to be Lucy. Finding a hatchett in the car’s trunk convinces Lucy her hunch is correct. 

“Lucy Wants To Move to the Country” (1957) ~ To convince the Spauldings  that they are undesireables and give Ricky his deposit back, Lucy and the Mertzes pretend to be Runyonesque gangsters and Ricky their mob boss!  Believing them, the Spauldings (Eleanor Audley and Frank Wilcox) hold them at gunpoint! 

“K.O. Kitty” (1958) ~ An episode of “The Westinghouse-Desilu Playhouse” in which Lucille Ball played a dance teacher who inherits a prize fighter. Two mobsters (Jesse White and Sid Melton) hold Kitty at gunpoint, pressuring her to fix the fight. In the end, the criminals reveal that they are not real mobsters and their guns are nothing but cigarette lighters!

“Sunday Showcase: The Lucy-Desi Milton Berle Special” (1959) ~ Lucy and Desi play the Ricardos on a Milton Berle special on NBC. In the story set in Las Vegas, Lucy gets an expensive ring intended for Mrs. Berle stuck on her finger.   Two jewel thieves (George Macready and Mike Mazurki) approach Lucy and tell her they are jewelry wholesalers. When the ring won’t come off, the thieves pursue Lucy and Berle all around the hotel.

I've got an idea for an AU, but I wanted to dip my toes in the fanfiction water. Here it is, my first ever piece of fanfiction.

The smell of fresh coffee greeted the galley of the Normandy, wafting through the recycled air. Sitting at the table already was Kaiden Alenko, two cups of steaming coffee in front of him. He watches the hall intently. As if on cue, a sluggish, slumbering mass of blankets emerges from the captain’s quarters. Eleanor Shepard, the first human Spectre, nearly crawls out of her room. Her faded pink locks were tucked into a messy bun, strands of hair haphazardly jutting out from the top of her head. Kaiden gives her an amused smile as he takes a long sip of coffee.

“Rough night?”

She rolls her violet eyes and takes a 

seat beside him, neglecting to leave behind the standard issue sheets that covered her bed. 

“I made you some coffee.”

Eleanor eyes it, then picks up the mug, giving it a taste. Kaiden watches, leaning back in his seat. “How’d I do?”

The absolute mess of a commander laughs a bit as she takes a bigger gulp, then sets down the mug.

“Just how I like it. How’d you know?”

“I pay attention. You look like hell.”

Eleanor sighs and opens a maintenance hatch on the wall nearby, exposing the fire extinguisher. Kaiden raises an eyebrow, awaiting an explanation. Instead of responding immediately, Shepard shoves her hand past the red cylinder, and pulls out a fuzzy stuffed star just big enough to hug.

“You…put them in the walls. Adams isn’t going to like that.”

“Adams can bite me. It’s not hurting anything.” She slumps over, hugging the stuffed star close to her chest with a sigh.

“Come on, Shepard. Talk to me. What’s wrong?”

Eleanor takes another long gulp of coffee and closes her eyes, thinking about what she intended to say.

“It’s just… The crew. There’s a lot of new faces, and I’m just… I already said some pretty dumb things to Wrex. I’ve never worked with…with anyone that wasn’t human before.”

“Shot nerves? That’s not like you, Shepard. You say stupid things all the time and it’s never bothered you before.”

Eleanor grumbles and rolls her eyes.

“Seriously Elly. What’s bothering you about this?”

“It’s…a lot of things. Like I said, new faces, new problems. I mean, what do dextros even eat?”

Kaiden takes a pause to drink down the last of his coffee, pondering the question.

“Tali would probably know. She seems knowledgeable enough to figure out how to prep some food. Hell, maybe we can add her to the cooking rotation so she and Garrus can eat something that isn’t pre-packaged.”

“It’s not Tali that I’m worried about…”

Kaiden’s eyebrow raises, and he looks over Shepard. The hero of the Skylian Blitz, the first human Spectre, was staring down into her coffee, lost in thought, almost flinching at the name.

“You were thinking about Garrus again, weren’t you?”

Eleanor nearly drops her coffee as she recoils, looking up at Kaiden with wide eyes and a soft blush across her cheeks.

“I…I wasn’t! I just… I worry about him, you know? The guy’s got a bad relationship with his father, a-and with his investigation going poorly… I guess I just worry about his capabilities. There’s nothing more to it.”

“Shepard, you don’t have to lie to me. It’s pretty clear where you stand on the matter.”

Eleanor nearly slams the coffee mug down onto the table, looking away with an indigent expression.

“I don’t know what you mean, Kaiden. I outrank you. Don’t forget that.”

Kaiden puts his hands up, giving an amused smile.

“Fine, fine, pull rank if you’ve gotta. You’ve only ever done it when I’ve struck a nerve.”

Eleanor stares him down, face red, burying herself beneath her blanket.

“You like him, Shepard. You don’t want to admit it, but you do. It’s pretty obvious to everyone that’s known you for more than five minutes.”

“I don’t…I mean… I… Is it really that obvious? He’s a turian! I can’t-”

Her words get cut off by the sound of the elevator door opening. A familiar voice clears his throat, and Garrus walks out to greet the duo. “Good morning, Commander, Lieutenant. Am I interrupting something?”

Kaiden gives a friendly smile as Shepard sinks deeper into her blankets.

“No, you’re fine. I was just leaving anyway.”

Kaiden finishes his coffee and stands to leave, giving Eleanor one last amused chuckle before shaking his head and walking off, leaving Eleanor to sulk in her blanket fortress.

Abby: "Darling! How are you? How's Rose? Oliver?"

Eleanor: "We're all doing just fine. Come on in!"

Louis looked on enviously. They were so alike, his mom and sister: both driven, accomplished, certain of their place in the world. He wished he could say the same.

At times like this he missed his dad. Maybe he would've had some insight; after all, he'd lived with his own inner demons for so long.

Rose: "Grandma!"

Abby: "That's right, grandma's come to visit. How's my little Rose?"

Eleanor: "Little Rose is due for a nap, but is insisting to watch another episode of Captain Hero first."

Abby: "Well, she can watch one more episode, can't she? I'll sit with her and put her to bed afterwards. I promise."

Rose: "Yayy!"

Eleanor *chuckles*: "You're spoiling her, mom."

Abby: "Ah, what are grandmothers for?"

The Silmarillion - Maedhros/Thingol

This is just where my brain is at right now. Firmly believe they could either fix each other or have the worst break-up in Middle-earth history. They are either working through it and healing to become their best selves, or Thingol's loathing for Maedhros is bottomless and Maedhros' guilt knows no end. Also, the sex is bomb.

Succession - Gerri/Roman

The second we got hints at an older woman/younger man ship I was foaming at the mouth. I have long been a connoisseur of age gap ships but it's always always with the man as the older one. I mean 99.99% of the time. GET IT, Gerri. I love that the show allowed Roman to be genuinely and deeply attracted to Gerri. I was worried they were going to have him move on to a younger woman, but his final scene in the entire show is him sipping Gerri's favorite drink and smiling to himself!! Yeah he fucked it all up but he still loved her and that mattered to him!

Dragon Age - Lavellan/Solas

Yeah yeah call me plebeian or whatever but there's a reason this ship is so popular. It's because it fucks so incredibly hard. Local re-awoken god falls for some rando because of her sincere kindness and interest in understanding the world. Played himself by trying to get close to the inquisitor. This ship is what grabbed me by the throat and pulled me bodily into the DA fandom for two years.

Mass Effect - Shepard/Thane Krios

Thaaaaaane. Thaaaaaaaane. I love him. My philosophical lizard killer man. He wants to be good. He thinks he's beyond redemption. He can't imagine his son wants him in his life. He dropped the ball of fatherhood so hard it went into the core of the planet. He doesn't know how to be a person without his wife. He has a second chance at love! 🥺 Shepard loves him even knowing they're destined to lose him. Shepard makes him want to live again. Screaming crying throwing up etc.

Beastars - Cosmo/Ibuki

Yeah this freak-ass rarepair ship is something a buddy got me into and then I couldn't stop thinking about it. Cosmo lives for danger; what's more dangerous than Ibuki? Ibuki is so very very dedicated to what he does, and very focused on his goals--but then there's Cosmo. I actually think they complement each other very well, even though their story is virtually guaranteed to end in tragedy.

Black Sails - Anne/Max

I'm not actually done with the show but I want so so bad for these two to have a happy ending of SOME kind TT_TT Max has been fucked over so many times (ELEANOR) and I just want her to get to spend the rest of her life with someone who genuinely loves her and wants the best for her and isn't going to put their business interests above her!!! Really, I just want good things for Max. And Max seems to open up a part of Anne that even Anne didn't know was there, so I think they can be good for each other <3 Jack can be there too if he wants.

Right, so...I have a lot of OC's. Holy crap, did this get long. I'll go by fandom to keep them organized, and listed here are just the main player types, not background characters. And if you want to know more about any of them, they can all be found here.

Fallout 4

Nora Howard (Junkyard 'Verse series): My first SoSu. Nora is the default name and I struggled for a long time to come up with a last name for her. At the time, I thought it would be funny for her to share a name with Todd Howard, and then it stuck.

Valara Thorsgaard (Set to Repeat, Subject to Change): Lamb the Younger gave me the first name and I liked it. Val, for short. The Scandinavian last name was just...I dunno, it felt right?

Honoria Wilcox (No One Knows): 'Honoria' is a version of Nora. Her maiden name was Beaufort, because it was slightly pretentious and so was Honoria's mother. Wilcox was her late husband's name and she was glad to take it.

Eleanor (Nights series): Another Nora variant, no last name.

Joan Whitfield (The Bargain): I wanted something different for this OC since she ends up with Kellogg. (All my Nora variants end up with Hancock.) The first name comes from my extended family, and the last name sounds lawyerish. 😆

Tien Xu (Unexpected): Ahh, the SoSu from my first real AU. She's a Chinese prisoner of war who ended up in the Vault. No real reason for her given name, but 'Tien' was my favorite chemistry professor's last name back when I was in college.

Alice Monroe (Amends to the Dead): My most recent SoSu. From the get go I wanted her to be a badass, because let's face it, you get pretty OP'd with some of those skills in-game. 'Alice' is a nod to Resident Evil. 'Monroe' is just because it sounded good.

Mass Effect Trilogy

Jayne Shepard (Soldier, Spectre, Savior series): It's the default FemShep name, but I changed the spelling. That's really it.

Jehanne Shepard (Some Kind of Resolution): Henna, for short. Jehanne is a phonetic variant of Jane.

The Wayhaven Chronicles

Aya Batra (Little Things): Batra is one of the surnames you can choose when making your Detective, but Aya was my own invention. It's a variation of an old D&D character (Aeo, who in turn is a variation on Io). Someday I want to write more for her.

Dragon Age

(oh boy, here we go)

Da'Fen Carlisle Mayers Lavellan (Until It Squeaks series): Carly, to her friends. My first MGIT. When I created her I wanted her to be a 'just some person' kind of character, so she needed a name that didn't stand out much. Tbh, I don't even like it. I think I was halfway through writing Twist when I decided it was short for Carlisle, which eased my meh a little. Then as time went on in the story, she earned the rest. Abelas was the first to call her 'Da'Fen' because she was the Consort of Fen'Harel, and she was formally adopted into Clan Lavellan after the events of the main game.

Imogen McLean (Wicked Things series): My ex wouldn't let me name Lamb the Younger Imogen when she was born, so I decided I would save it for a character someday. And so I did. 'McLean' because she's of Irish descent, and I knew a girl by that family name when I was a kid.

Eliana Hawke (Wicked Things series): I tend to give my F!Hawkes unique names, I guess. But this one was for the purpose of Imogen getting to call her Elly and Elly getting to call her Genny. It was a deliberate 'the names you use denote intimacy level' kind of thing.

Terisin Mahariel (Wicked Things series): It means 'Flint-like'. I wanted something hefty for the HoF, something that would give the impression of gravity and determination. And then everyone in the fic shortens it to 'Ter'. 🤣

Mira Foret (Driftwood series): This is actually a nickname, her full name is Almira. Her family name on Earth was 'Wood', and upon being transported to Thedas, she changed it to 'Foret', which is the Orlesian version of the word. There is actually a reason she has these names in particular, but that gets into level 40 IRL stuff, so I shan't say.

Carmilla Hawke (Maker Damned Fools): Cara, for short, and only if you have her permission. Back when I first wrote MDF, I had a notion that Leandra wanted to give all her children names beginning with the same letter. "How'd Bethany happen?" Varric asked. Because they didn't know they were having twins and had to come up with a name on the fly and Malcolm had a twisted sense of humor. It makes more sense in the fic. Anyway, she hates the name, and thus goes mostly by Hawke.

Hera Trevelyan (No More My Heart Beats Without You): I just liked it. Didn't even know it was the default name of F!Adaar. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ellisora Lavellan (Flowers For Fen'Harel series): Everyone uses Ellana. It's the default. I don't like defaults (usually) and will twist them around any which way until I find something I do like.

Sa'vir Lavellan (No Strings): It means 'the First Path' or, more precisely for her character, 'the Only Way'. It was both to give some backstory to her and was a nod to her being inspired by The Unending Wake's Vir.

Lahalaan Lavellan (My Blood On Your Hands, Your Teeth In My Skin): Ahh, my poor Laani. She kicked around as an OC for a long time before I finally was able to write something for her. She was always meant to have a longfic, but it never happened. It means 'Like the Foxes', and it suits her as a redhead and a rogue class.

La'Vise Lavellan (Just Like Fire): The title of the fic is the definition of the name. She is my one canon story. I am utterly unsurprised at myself for not finishing it.

Lark Cadash (All the Earth and Air series): Again, default is bleh. Malika > Lika > Lark. Then I leaned into the bird symbolism.

Shae Cadash (Destiny Is Just In the Timing): This is apparently a popular name for a Cadash, lol. In order to set her apart (both in fandom and in my head), it's actually a nickname. Her full name is Shaelgat, meaning 'Unto Shale', and it has Lore(tm). A daughter of every generation is named this, and will be until they find the golem they're named after.

Banal'ras Nydha, the Twice-Born (Hope Is a Fragile Thing): She's actually a MGIT, who was given the name 'the Shadow of Night' by Solas in the Fade before she became corporeal in Thedas. She has a shtick that goes with it, the ability to use Fade cloak even though she isn't a mage otherwise. Ya know, like Cole. Her story and name are part and parcel with each other and mostly because I wanted to make an OC who was Deeply Mysterious(tm) without ever explaining it. The legend-mark comes from the Avvar, among whom she lives at the start of her fic.

Virlas Lavellan (I'll tell you my sins (and you can sharpen your knife)): Default, bleh. Symbolically fitting name, yay. It means 'the Way That is Given' or something like that. This was a giftfic turned treat for the Solavellan Hell Exchange, and I didn't think too hard about the name other than something that would fit for a post-canon Lavellan.

Rinna Cadash (What Lies Beneath): Another giftfic OC. Dwarven names tend towards being short and this one just felt right.

Eshali'nan Lavellan (A Wolf Named Vengeance): This fic is a modern AU collab with my beloved Angel, and someday we'll finish it, lol. Esha, for short, was another OC that kicked around for a long time like Laani. She has quite a backstory that will likely never get told because frankly, I'm tired of writing DA retellings. Originally she was a Sentinel in Arlathan, who spent most of the intervening years in uthenera like Solas, but woke a generation ago. She lived with the Lavellan clan and was chosen to go to the Conclave. The name means 'Daughter of Vengeance' and was chosen for her at her elevation to Sentinel status.
