So I was analyzing Madi and Woodes’s scene in 4x09 and more specifically the clicks that came from Hallucination Eleanor.

So one thing I noticed was that it seemed to mirror the scene in 2x09 (??) with Miranda’s death with the ticking of the clock.

But what I also noticed was that it could be a symbol for fighting as the clicks sound similar to the clashes of the swords when the meet. I know a lot of people were wondering why she was knitting and one theory was that it was a symbol of the role that Woodes forced her into as a docile housewife so my thoughts kinda went with that. Like the knitting needles were the closest thing that Eleanor/ most women would get to a sword so maybe it was a symbol of her fighting Woodes with the role that she was given.

Even just the placing of the clicks throughout the scene. They were always present since the time where we start realizing that Woodes is hallucinating her but there is some specific times where the clicks are prominent such as when Woodes says “don’t make the same mistake that I did” the clicks are very loud and prominent and more echoey more like a sword signaling Eleanor’s anger over Woodes’s actions. But also when Madi says “their war” there is a loud click afterwards and the same with “flints war, and my war” emphasizing her point.

But what especially caught my attention was when Madi said “but it was neither I, nor Flint, nor the Spanish raider who killed your wife, that, you did”was after she called Woodes out for killing Eleanor, the clicks stop. Personally I read this is as Eleanor even Hallucination Eleanor being pleased that someone had finally recognized Woodes’s part in her death and calling him out for it. Like a part of her was laid to rest because someone knew what he had done to her and told him so.

It’s just so wonderful as well to play those scenes with Toby because I think about those scenes in Season 1 when they’re in the office and they’re talking about Odysseus and the oar and walking inland until it’s a shovel I think that as an image really captivated Eleanor and it drove her through the seasons to say “No, I’m going to make this place a sustainable republic. It’s going to be ours, it’s going to be prosperous. We’re not going to live under brutality.” Those are the things that drove her in the first few seasons. To then die in the arms of the man who gave her that vision, in a way, is incredibly beautiful, I think.
